Data Definitions

# Term Definition

1 Age

Describes how old a person is. It is calculated based on date of birth in the student information system. For census reporting, age is as of the 20th day of classes during the specified term. NDUS reporting truncates student age to whole year classification.

2 APO AE/AP A military post office address.

3 Beginning Freshmen (FYR)

A full-time or part-time student attending for the first time as a freshman. This is a calculated value in Report D of the census enrollment reporting. For the Fall semester, this value does include the students who started in the summer. Because part-time students are included, this number is not the same as the IPEDS first-time full-time count.

4 Collaborative Student (COLL)

A fully admitted student in good academic standing at the home institution who is taking an approved course with a provider institution, according to NDUS Procedure 404.0

5 Degree Credit (DC) Instructional activities which result in the award of college credit that can be applied toward a college degree.

6 Developmental Course (DEV)

A basic academic skills course designed to prepare students to complete regular academic degree-credit courses. All NDUS courses numbered less than 100 are developmental courses. Developmental courses may count toward a student's full-time course load but do not count as degree credit coursework.

7 Distance Education (DE)

An academic program or institutional-approved credit course that uses one or more technologies to deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and to support regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor synchronously or asynchronously. Distance education delivery modes includes the following (parentheses indicate coding of these courses in the NDUS student information system):

a. Online synchronous (IA)b. Online asynchronous (IS)c. Interactive Video (V2)d. Independent Study (CR)

8 Duplicated

An enrollment count in which an individual student may be counted more than once because they are enrolled in more than one course delivery method or on more than one campus.

9 E-Learn/E-LearningInstruction in an electronic format via the internet. Includes online asynchronous, online synchronous, and interactive video.

10 Enrollments

A single enrollment constitutes a single student enrolled in one course or institution. One student may carry more than one enrollment per term.

11 Full Time (FT)

Undergraduate students enrolled in 12 or more credit hours or graduate and professional students enrolled in 9 or more credit hours. For summer session, full time is 9 or more credits for

21

Page 22: North Dakota University System 2020 Fall Enrollment Report

undergraduate and 6 or more credits for graduate and professional (SBHE policy 440.1)

12 Full Time Equivalent (FTE)

On a semester basis means undergraduate total credit hours divided by 15; graduate total credit hours divided by 12. Full-time equivalency on an annual basis means undergraduate total credit hours divided by 30; graduate total credit hours divided by 24. Every professional student is counted as one FTE student.

13 Graduate (GR) A student who holds a bachelor's or first professional degree or equivalent and is taking courses at the post-baccalaureate level.

14 Headcount Enrollment (HC)

The number of individual students enrolled in credit courses, regardless of credit load.

15

High School Students Enrolled in College Courses (ERE)

A student who has not yet graduated from high school but is enrolled in a college class. Includes both dual credit and early entry categories.

16 Hybrid/Blended (CO)

A form of instruction that includes students from different locations and/or environments (face-to-face, online, IVN, etc.) for synchronous and/or asynchronous instruction. Most “Hyflex” courses established during the 2020 pandemic are categorized as hybrid/blended.

17 Independent Study (CR)

Instruction provided in a self-study, self-paced format where the instructor and student mutually establish method(s) of communication.

18 Interactive Video (IVN)

A video and audio communications session between two or more remote sites with live, animated image transmission and display. This connection allows for both the faculty and students to be seen and heard by each other.

19 Midwest Higher Ed (MHEC)

Tuition reduction program offered to states participating in the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC). States currently participating with North Dakota include Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. In order to receive this residency coding and corresponding tuition rate, the student must meet guidelines. Not all graduate programs participate. Please refer to the website for a current listing of participating programs: http://www.mhec.org/MidwestStudentExchangeProgram.

20 Non-Resident Alien A non-U.S. citizen or resident alien.

21 Not Specified Student did not identify within a category listed.

22 Off Campus Face-to-face (FF)

Describes the traditional classroom setting where the instructor and students are physically located in the same place in an off-campus location and may incorporate the use of multiple supportive technologies as appropriate.

23 Online Asynchronous (IA) Online instruction occurring independent of time or location.

24 Online Synchronous (IS) Online instruction occurring independent of location, but at the same time (real time).

25 Part Time (PT) All students enrolled in courses for credit but less than full-time.

26 Professional (PROF) Medicine, law and pharmacy students.

22

Page 23: North Dakota University System 2020 Fall Enrollment Report

27 Race Group or groups with which a person identifies or having origins as identified as valid values for IPEDs reporting.

28 Scheduled Credit Hours (SCH) The sum of all course credit hours in which students are enrolled.

29 Transfer (TR)

Undergraduate students who have earned college credit at another postsecondary institution following high school graduation (SBHE Policy 440).

30 Unduplicated

The enrollment count that removes duplicate enrollments of students across institutions or categories, so they are only counted only once. For instance, a student who is enrolled in two institutions at the same time would count as one unduplicated enrollment.

31 Western Exchange (WICHE)

Tuition reduction program offered to states participating in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) and the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP). States participating in the program along with North Dakota include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Not all programs at all institutions are eligible for the tuition reduction. Please see http://wue.wiche.edu/search1.jsp for more information regarding eligible programs/campuses.
