North Dakota State University

This past year has been an exceptional year for the AGC student chapter at NDSU. Ourmember numbers have almost doubled, we now have 50 registered members. Ourmonthly meetings have been full and member activities have increased. Listed below aredescriptions of the activities our members participated in during 2001. We are veryexcited to be able to submit an application for a national award.

ASC Region IV Competition – FebruaryNDSU had two teams compete in the ASC region IV competition, Design/Build andCommercial. Each team consisted of six members. During the preparation for the eventall of the team members gathered information from local and non-local contractors. Afterthe competition each of the teams presented their proposals to the entire student chapter.It was a great experience. Our design/build team placed second.

Ingrid Scarski Scholarship Awards - MarchLast year our chapter officers helped organize the Ingrid Scarski Scholarship Awardnight. Our officers distributed flyers, reserved the auditorium and collected nominations.The Ingrid Scarski Scholarship is an award in honor of the best construction secretaryever, our very own, “Ingrid Scarski”. She’s the backbone of our program. The recipientof this award is chosen by the students and is picked as the “most helpful student.” Lastyear the recipient was our chapter President, Mike Pierson.

Paintball – AprilPaintball was a little rough last year, it snowed 4 inches the night before we had plannedto play, APRIL 20TH! That’s North Dakota weather for you. The game had been set upfor outdoors, but because of the snow we ended up playing at an indoor facility. Sixmembers participate in this event.

Coal Mine and Power Plant, Field Trip – AprilEleven of our members drove 4 hours to Bulla, ND to tour both the open pit coal miningoperation and the two-unit coal burning power plant. This trip was amazing! All whoparticipated gathered some great photos and interesting facts. After the field trip MikePierson presented a slide show on the trip in our Equipment 301 class.

Highway Clean-up – April and OctoberEach year our chapter cleans a one-mile section of road just south of Moorhead, MN. Weclean this section twice a year, and as needed. Last year we cleaned in April and October.Approximately six members participated in each clean up. After the clean up, we alwaysgrill burgers at a near by members house. Senior Dinner – MayLast year our chapter underclassmen hosted the annual Construction Senior Dinner. Theevent was held at a local banquet room. All graduating construction seniors and theirspouses were invited. Active AGC members ate free at this event. Door prizes werecollected from local businesses and given away at the dinner. All construction facultywere also present. It was a fun night for everyone!

Web Page – MayLast year our AGC student chapter website was born. It was created by Mike Pierson.The site took approximately 40 hours to complete and is updated as much as possible. Itis a great way to get information to our current members and other NDSU students whoare interested in joining. We have received numerous e-mail from local industry andalumni praising the site. Please check it out!

NDSU Organization Fair – SeptemberThe NDSU Organization Fair was an opportunity for us to provide information to NDSUstudents about our student chapter. Six members ran an information booth at the fair.They handed out flyers and answered questions about chapter activities and membership. Guest Speaker, Joel Hanson, NDSU Career Center – SeptemberJoel Hanson was our first guest speaker of the new school year. Joel spoke to our chapterabout the NDSU career center and how it can work for us. He also talked about preparingresumes and getting ready for interviews. All of our members were encouraged to takeadvantage of the career center, and from what we can tell most of them have.

NDSU Green House – September39 members put in a total of over 400 hours into the construction of this greenhouse.

Construction Advisory Board Meeting – April and SeptemberThe construction advisory board meets twice a year. The officers of our chapter gave a15-20 minute presentation about what is happening in our chapter. After the presentationthey answer questions. In September our officers actually spent a couple of hours talkingwith the advisory members about the future of our construction program at NDSU.

Engineering & Architecture Expo – SeptemberOver 60 construction related companies attend the E&A Expo in September. All of ourmembers attend this event, many of them ended up having interviews with thesecompanies soon after.

Guest Speaker, Nancy Slotten, Border State Paving – OctoberNancy spoke with our members about the paving industry. She covered the biddingprocesses Border State Paving Co. goes through when bidding a job. She also talkedabout the bonding process. Over 30 members attended this presentation

AGC Region IV Conference – OctoberEleven of our members attended the Region IV Conference last year. The conference washeld in Omaha, NE. While at the conference our members toured two construction sites,the new First National Bank and the new Bio-Dome exhibit at the Omaha Zoo. Aconstruction job fair was also attended. The trip was a great opportunity to meet industryprofessional and also AGC members from other construction schools.

Homecoming Float – OctoberThis year 10 members helped organize our homecoming float. The float was a largeflatbed truck pulling a bobcat on a trailer. Our homecoming opponents were the SDSUJackrabbits so the bobcat was positioned to look as though it had just buried a jackrabbit.A sound system was attached to the truck and we played a Metalica version of ElmerFud’s, “kill the rabbit”. We received many cheers from the homecoming crowd. OurAGC banner was placed on the front of the truck. Our members stood on the flat bed andhanded out candy to parade watchers.

Homecoming Tailgating Party – OctoberEvery year our chapter holds a tailgating party for members, alumni, and local industry.We had a really good turn out this year. Three members donated their grills and cookingskills for the event. We went through 80 Burgers, 5 gallons of potato salad, and 5 boxesof chips. It was a fun pre-game party and our NDSU Bison ran over the SDSUJackrabbits with no trouble at all! Could have served jackrabbit burgers after the game! AGC/NAHB Picnic – OctoberIn October our chapter teamed up with the NAHB student chapter to hold a fall picnic forall CME and CE students. Our members were in charge of organizing the games andgetting the word out to students about the picnic. All construction faculty attended.

Guest Speaker, Mark Dougherty, ND AGC - NovemberMark Dougherty is the Membership Services Director of ND AGC. He spoke to us aboutwhat his job entails, who he recruits, and who he likes to see at the local/annual AGCconvention every year. He also gave us information about the services the local andnational AGC organizations provide for companies in the construction industry.

Furniture Building – NovemberApproximately 10 of our members donated one full day to build outdoor furniture to raisefunds for future chapter activities. One folding picnic table, two adirondack chairs andtwo folding benches were constructed. The furniture was auctioned off at the ND AGCConvention. Our chapter gives a special thanks to Stenerson Lumber Company fordonating all of the redwood for the projects.

ND AGC Convention – DecemberEvery year members from our chapter attend the ND AGC Convention. This year we had10 members participate in the event. During the event our chapter hosts games and sellsNDSU-AGC can coolers and golf tees. Our outdoor furniture was also raffled during thisevent. Over 100 ND AGC members were present at the convention. Our members haddinner and socialized with them the entire night.
