January began with our first edition of theCounty Leader being delivered on 20th of themonth. The year produced many interestingevents which were to have a profound impacton residents of the North County.

The first event of impor-tance of the new year waswhen InternationalAirlines Group (IAG),made another bid to buythe national airline, AerLingus. However, withRyanair owning 29.8 percent of Aer Lingus, thetakeover was not as

smooth as it could havebeen. On the positive side,news that aviationanalysts predicted thatAer Lingus would be wiseto take up IAG’s offerA Swords man, LorcanFarrelly released a newsong, which managed toraise €1,600 for the Fr Peter McVerry Trust. Also

in January, little MollyMcNally, the six year oldBalbriggan girl, who wasin the process ofpreparing for her bonemarrow transplant.attended her school inBalscadden, where a partywas held in her honour.Molly went for her trans-plant to the Bone MarrowTransplant Unit at OurLady’s Children’s Hospital,

Crumlin. Meanwhile,fundraising projectscontinued all over theNorth County for thecharming little Balbriggangirl.Students, parents andteachers from

Portmarnock CommunitySchool were once againpreparing for their charitymission to Lesotho inAfrica. The CountyCouncil’s staff charity,Helping Hand Fund allo-cated over €150,000 tolocal, national and inter-national charities since2006 and Action IrelandTrust was nominated theOverseas Charity 2014and is the recipient of an €8,000 allocation of funding. The town of Skerries wasrecognised for its innova-tive and creative effortsfor making the area a

great place to grow old.At a special ceremony,Skerries was one of sevento win an Age FriendlyEnvironment Award fortheir Age Friendly TownInitiative, set up last year.The County Council, inassociation with theAgeing Well Network,selected Skerries as thetown in which to pilot theAge Friendly Townprocess in the NorthCounty. Confirmation was receivedfrom the Department ofEducation and Skills thatconstruction will begin ontwo new primary schoolsin Rush and Balbrigganthis year.Work will begin on theconstruction of GaelscoilRos Eo in Rush and ScoilChormaic CNS inBalbriggan. In addition tothis, St. Finian’sCommunity College inSwords and Lusk NationalSchool, are both to beextended in the New Year.The Department ofEducation and Skills alsoconfirmed that work willcontinue on the newschools for St. OliverPlunkett’s in Malahideand St. Catherine’sNational School in Rush,while the extension forArdgillan CommunityCollege will also becompleted in 2015.

February began with the sale of Aer Lingusdominating the national airwaves and it wasclear that there was some resistance to theGovernment selling it’s 25 per cent share in thecompany. Local TDs, including Labour’sBrendan Ryan and Fine Gael’s Alan Farrell,thought the sale of the Government’s share wasa red line issue, and one that had the potentialto leave negative implications at the doorsteps,come general election time. The clear consensus was that this was not adeal which found favour with people in theNorth County, with all of the respondentshaving grave reservations about the future ofemployees at the company. February also saw Malahide Castle and Gardenswinning a top award atthe CIE ToursInternational Awards ofExcellence. MalahideCastle was one of thewinners of a presti-gious award, whichwas presented by BrianW Stack, ManagingDirector, CIE ToursInternational at DublinCastle. Meanwhile, not to beoutdone, Swords Castlewas also in the news asplans were unveiled forthe first ever SwordsSummer Festival, thatwas set to take placelater in the year duringthe month of July.

Swords Castle and the main street would playhost to the three-day event, which would give awelcome boost to local traders and businesses,as well as being fun for all the family and localsalike.

It was an exciting time for two local entrepre-neurs from the North County when theycompeted for the title of 2015 David ManleyEmerging Entrepreneur Award. First was local woman, Sarah Davis-Goff, from

Donabate, and herbusiness partner LisaCoen were shortlistedfor their businessTramp Press - an inde-pendent publisher setup to change the land-scape of what Irishpublishing is capableof accomplishing.Next up for the awardwas the uniquewebsite wheelchair-taxi.ie that was set upby Stephen Cluskeyfrom Swords - a wheel-chair user himself. Thesite is a ‘one-stopshop’ for sourcing allforms of wheelchairaccessible transportacross Ireland.

Valentine’s Day was a very special day for the pupils of Old Boro National School in Swords, when they held a fundraiserin aid of the school. Each child had to bring in a treat for themselves, using any kind of sweets, chocolate or lollipops.They donated €2 when they brought in the goodies, and they were allowed to have them as a Valentine's Treat. turned out toremember him, and awreath was laid at themonument byChristopher McCann,grandson of RoverMcCann and twopoems written byanother grandson, DrJack McCann were readby him. Balbriggan CommunityCollege’s schoolcommunity cametogether in April todemonstrate about thelack of sporting, recre-ational and PE facilitiesprovided by theDepartment ofEducation/DDLETB forthe school over thepast number of years.Other schools in thetown have seen PEfacilities built orinstalled over theinterim period and thishas placed the college,one of the oldest andlongest established inthe town, at a seriousdisadvantage.Ryan Corneille (age 15)from SkerriesCommunity College wona major prize at theStudent EnterpriseAwards National Finalswhich took place atCroke Park in April,claiming second place inthe IntermediateCategory. Ryanimpressed the judgeswith his business: ‘BookSnaps’, a book andorganisational copy tool,which bounds books andcopies together. There was great excite-ment as every school inNorth County Dublin waspresented with a copy ofthe Proclamation and anational flag bymembers of the DefenceForces during April,which continuedthroughout the year.

March began with the news that planning permissionhad been granted for the construction of a new LidlSupermarket, located on Dublin Road in Swords,beside the Pinnock Hill roundabout. This included theconstruction of a two storey, licensed discount foodstore with ancillary off-license sales, a single storeycafé and two storey medical centre.Brave little Molly McNally, the six-year-oldBalbriggan girl, who had a vital bone marrow trans-plant operation at Crumlin Childrens Hospital wentback home with her family in Balbriggan duringMarch. Her parents, Emma and Gerry were delightedto have their little girl back home at last. Brave Molly

underwent very tough chemotherapy prior to heroperation. In political news, March saw Sinn Feinchoose a candidate from outside the constituency tostand for the party in the next general election.Louise O’Reilly, who hails from Crumlin, was selectedat the party selection conference at the CarnegieCourt Hotel in Swords. She is a full-time Siptu activistfor the past 10 years. St Patricks Day was celebrated across the NorthCounty with colourful parades in many of the townsand villages in the area. The fine weather added tothe large gatherings with families turning out in forceto enjoy the great festivites. This schemeis aimed to improve anumber of schoolbuildings across theNorth Dublin area. Theschool is particularlyclose to Minister forChildren, Dr JamesReilly, who paid them asurprise visit. Donabate man, PaulGorman and his son,Sam Baker Gorman(14) returned from ahiking expedition toNepal, where they hada narrow escape fromserious injury. Theyreturned days beforethe beautifulHimalayan country wasdevastated by anearthquake, which leftover 7,000 peopledead.The sale of 100 year-old Swords pub, ‘TheStar’ was one of themain stories in May.One of the most readilyidentifiable businessesin Swords, M.R.Taylors, better knownas ‘The Star’ onSwords Main Streetwent up for sale on theinstructions of theTaylor family, whohave traded success-fully from the premisesfor over 100 years.People from Swordsand afar have fondmemories of timesspent socialising withfriends and family inthis iconic pub.Talented Balbriggangirl Hannah Hawkshawgave a starry perfor-mance at the GibraltarInternational SongFestival competition,coming in third place. Hannah spent monthspreparing for this

event, and it was herfirst time entering acompetition for song-writers.There was great newsfor parents and school-goers in Malahide,with the news that asite had been selectedfor Malahide/Portmarnock EducateTogether primaryschool. Local TD, AlanFarrell (FG) confirmedexclusively to theCounty Leader that itwas his understandingthat the site of the OldRugby Club on theBack Road, Malahide islikely to be the futurehome of the Malahide/Portmarnock EducateTogether primaryschool.A story broke in Mayabout concerns overthe HPV vaccine, whichwas given to teenagegirls to counter cervicalcancer. A number offamilies in the NorthCounty claim that theirdaughters have experi-enced life changingeffects since beinginjected with thevaccine in their firstyear at secondaryschool. A support groupwas been set up byparents of teenagegirls, who are claimedto have have developedserious health prob-lems since enteringsecondary school.

The Rotary Club of Dublin Fingal and Indie Spice, Swords have came together to raise funds for the Nepal earthquakedisaster, which has claimed about 8,000 lives. A massive tourism boost for the North Countywas announced, when news broke that a majormusical event is to be held in the North Countynext year. Local senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF),confirmed that the world renowned Irish PipeBand championships will be held in MalahideCastle in July 2016, with 80 bands from acrossIreland, Scotland, Canada, the US and Australiadue to travel to the event. News came that Swords Castle was open to thepublic. At a ceremony held there, County Mayor,Cllr David O’Connor cut the ribbon to officiallyopen the Castle, which held the Swords Festival,from 17th to 19th July, with the SwordsArchaeofest on Saturday 18th July. Two young Swords lads headed off to LosAngeles to compete in the Special Olympics.While this was a great distinction for the boys,the fact that both of them come from the sameestate, Hawthorn Park in Swords is truly remark-able. Emmet Daly (19) and Billy Kane (15) repre-sented their country with pride. Emmet was akey member of the 5-a-side football team, whileBilly returned as one of the stars of the entireevent, with two gold, three silver and one bronzemedal in gymnastics.

Balbriggan and Skerries got in on the act ofproducing top class sportsmen, when two lads from either town took home impressiveWorld Champion titles at a martial arts eventcalled the World Breaking AssociationChampionships (WBA) in Orlando, Florida.Balbriggan man, Keith Fanning, competed at therevered competition, with his friend and studentFerdia “Macker” McMahon from Skerries. Keithwas announced as the Heavyweight Power FootChampion and Macker was the LightweightPower Elbow Champion. The much anticipated Rush Harbour Festivalkicked off on Friday, 31st July and, as usual, wasjam packed with lots of activities for all ages. Theofficial opening featured St Maur’s Pipe Band,followed by an energetic display of drummingfrom the Japanese drummers.

ChildcareFianna Fáil will introduce a secondfree pre-school year for childrenaged 2-3, and give parents a€2,000 tax credit to cover child-care costs. As well as that we willintroduce a 30-week maternityleave. We are committed tomaking additional childcaresupports accessible to families ofunder-3s, including early educa-tion and development support.

EducationFor the first time we will develop anintegrated future plan for all newschools in Fingal in a properlyphased manner. Fingal has theyoungest and most diverse school-going population of any county inIreland. We wil l bring back theGuidance Counsellors who were ahuge loss to second-level students.Fianna Fáil will maintain the studentgrant at third-level.

PyritePyrite is a sad reality for many home-owners in North Dublin. It has been along hard struggle working with somany of them to vindicate their rights.I am committed to bringing in a newPyrite Remediation Scheme becausethis Government’s scheme is not fitfor purpose and has let so manypeople down.No homeowners, whose insurer willnot pay, will be left behind in myproposed scheme. We will place alevy by way of contribution on thoseresponsible.

AirportPensionsI will continue to campaign for andwith the hundreds of families inFingal who have been sold out bythis government, which reducedtheir Airport pension benefits by upto 60%. My commitment to theretired, deferred and activemembers of the Airport PensionScheme is total.

CrimeIt was obvious that crime was goingto greatly increase when thenumber of Gardaí in Dublin Northwas cut by 152. What a disastrousdecision that was. I am totallyopposed to any more closure ofGarda Stations. It’s a priority, Ibelieve, to restore Garda numbersin Fingal, to restore the 24/7 Gardaservice to Malahide, to re-openRush station, and open a newsatellite station for Donabate andPortrane.

HealthBeaumont A & E needs to bedoubled in size to cater for allthe demands on it, and we fullyback that. We will bring back theTreatment Purchase Fund toguarantee hospital treatment forchildren waiting for 3 monthsand for adults waiting for 6months. We will appoint 500 newtherapists and approve 5,000new Home Care Packages.

The organ-isers of the Bray AirShow brought a miniversion to Rush. Thefestival concluded with

the Mayor’s AfternoonTea Dance on BankHoliday Monday.August also broughtgood news for SwordsGAA Club, Fingalians,who marked the startof a new era for theclub. G.A.A. President,Aogán Ó Fearghail,visited the club toopen their resurfacedall-weather pitch attheir facility in LawlessMemorial Park. Thereopening was alsoattended be localrepresentatives andcouncillors.A team of volunteersled by communitya r c h a e o l o g i s t ,Christine Baker begana month long commu-nity excavation at

Swords Castle inAugust. SwordsCastle: DiggingHistory, was theCounty Council’s first Community

Archaeology project.An exhibition called‘My Castle’ also tookplace in Swords Castlethat explored what theCastle means to thepeople of Swords.Musical history wasmade when 22 year oldLauryn Gaffney fromMalahide made wavesin the musical theatreworld, thanks to thehuge success of heroriginal production,‘Big Shot.’ Lauryn andher talented cast andcrew receivedoutstanding criticalacclaim after the USApremiere of her Irishmusical at the year’sSan DiegoInternational FringeFestival.

Meanwhile, inPortrane, it would beanother young girl whowas set to make head-lines. Eleven-year-oldKate Smart landed theLucy Crosbie Shield atthe MalahideHorticultural Show inthe Under 12 sectionfor the sixth year in arow in the Children’sCraft section of theshow. The LucyCrosbie Shield ispresented forChildren’s Arts andCrafts and is open tochildren of all ages.What was truly remark-able about Kate’sachievement, was thatthis is the sixth year insuccession that shehas won this prize.

The Autumn brought an end to a disappointingSummer weatherwise, but one person who wasfar from disappointed was Linda Foley fromDonabate. She was chosen as one of three final-ists in the Canon Ireland photography contest.The competition was open to amateur photogra-phers around Ireland and aimed at helpingbudding photographers to take their work to thenext level. Linda focused on the scenic views andnature of her local area in Donabate.Another young girl who was brought joy inSeptember was little Molly McNally. The sevenyear old Balbriggan girl who was suffering fromStage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancerfinally went into remission after a long struggle

fighting the disease. Transplant Team Ireland arrived home from theWorld Transplant Games in Argentina to Dublinairport during September. The four person teambrought with them a haul of 13 medals, includingseven gold, four silver and two bronze. PeterHeffernan, from Skerries was one of the standout performers on the Irish team. Peter receiveda kidney transplant in 2011 and is a keenswimmer. He won two gold medals, in the 50mbackstroke, and 100m backstroke, as well as abronze medal for the 100m freestyle event in his50-59 year old age category.It was good news all round for Donabate man,Christy McCann, when he was elected ChiefScout of Scouting Ireland at an general meetingof Scouting Ireland in the RDS. The results of the Tidy Towns competition werereleased on 28th of the month and once again,our towns excelled. Skerries was top of the pilein the new Midland and East region andincreased its total to 321 points, a mere twopoints behind overall winners Letterkenny.Malahide also secured its gold medal andspecial mention must be given to Lusk, whichachieved its 1st bronze medal in the competition. The month ended on a charitable note, with afundraiser being held at the Yacht Bar,Loughshinny for well known local man, TonySpencer. Tony suffered horrific injuries in a freakaccident earlier in the year. This has resulted inTony being paralysed from the neck down.

The purpose ofthe Green Flag AwardScheme is to recog-nise and reward thebest green spaces inthe country. FingalCounty Councilapplied for and wasawarded Green Flagsfor two of i ts mosticonic parks,Mil lennium Park,Blanchardstown andMalahide Demesne.October saw theFingal Enterprise weekrun from 5th to 9thand it was the mostsuccessful andbiggest one to date. Itwas packed withopportunit ies foraspiring local entre-preneurs to networkand boost their busi-nesses. Local busi-nesses and start upsfrom across the regionmade their way tonumerous events.More than 1,600e n t r e p r e n e u r sattended 30 dynamicbusiness events,workshops and

networking opportuni-t ies, along withmentoring clinics. At the annualOccupational SafetyAwards, which wereheld in Galway on the

2nd October, FingalCounty Council’s HRteam achieved the‘Local Authority/Council Award’ in theBusiness CategoryAwards. The County Leaderspoke with two localHome Help workers,Patricia Greene andMary Hughes, whodescribed the strugglethey are facing to getjustice in the form ofpayments, which werepromised to them bythe HSE. The end of Octobersaw the inauguralOktoberfest atSwords Castle, whichshowed up the castleto the public. The

venue was a marquee,with locals enjoyingthe excel lent beerfest ival . TheOktoberfest ran from30th October until 1st

November. Octoberended in spectacularfashion when theCounty Council put ontheir Festival of Fire,which was held inSwords Town Park onthe evening ofHalloween. This spec-tacular f i reworksdisplay thrilled thou-sands of locals whogathered to see whatmany believed to beone of the best f i reworks displaysseen anywhere.

awarded to towns inrecognition for theirnight time economy,which demonstratedthat Swords, the firsttown in North CountyDublin to received the

flag, is a desirable andsafe place to socialiseat night time. Theannual Fingal DublinChamber BusinessExcellence andC o r p o r a t eResponsibility Awardstook place Crowne

Plaza Northwood Hotelin Santry. The awardssaw many local busi-nesses being recog-nised for theireconomic and socialcontribution to the

area. They were thelargest awards night todate, with the high-light being the presen-tation of the JC SavageAward for BusinessPerson of the Year toTom Keogh, of KeoghCrisps. As usual, the

event was comperedby Marty Whelan andmarked ChamberPresident, SiobhanKinsella’s last awardsceremony. Novemberwould also see the

launch of aprogramme of specialevents, includingthose planned for theNorth County, as partof Ireland 2016 tomark the 100thanniversary of theEaster Rising.It was not all goodnews though, whenthere was widespreadlocal outrage at thenews that local man,Graham Lowndes(50), was to be suedby the burglar whohad broken into his 82year old father,Richard’s home atKilsallaghan in 2012.The burglar, MatthewFahey, had decided tosue Lowndes forinjuries caused afterhe broke into hisfather’s home.Graham Lowndesfound the thief in theprocess of ransackinghis father’s home andshot him in the arm.The news came at atime when rural crimeand intimidation offamilies was at it ’sheight. and also camehot on the heels of

‘Operation Thor’which was launchedto try to combat ruralcrime. Ballyboughaltook a top prize in theannual IPB Co-opera-tion Ireland Pride ofPlace Awards, at aglittering gala event inEnnis, Co. Clare. Morethan 800 people fromacross the island filledthe venue to hear thewinners. Ballyboughaltook runner up placein the main competition in thecategory for neigh-bourhoods with popu-lations of between300 and 1000 people.

The CountyLeader exclusivelyconfirmed thatconstruction of theproject would defi-nitely go ahead, witha definite start dateconfirmed of 2021. Swords resident, MattCullen was selectedas Volunteer of theYear at the VolunteerIreland Awards. Mattemerged victoriousfrom over 31 excep-tional volunteers,including three candi-dates from Dublin.The awards werepresented at a special

ceremony in City Hall,Dublin. For 10 years,Matt Cullen has beenan invaluable memberof the Tidy Townsteam in Swords, whichculminated in himwinning Volunteer ofthe Year. Two remarkablestudents from LoretoSecondary School in

Balbriggan jointly wona public speakingcompetition, whichentitled them to repre-sent Dublin in anational publicspeaking competition.Manny Choudhry andMia Doran, are bothTransition Yearstudents at Loreto. Further accomplish-ments of the youth ofthe North County werenoted when Localise,a youth and commu-nity developmentorganisation visited St

Colmcil le’s GirlsNational School.Thirty f ive school-children from Localisehanded over 60 giftparcels to the local StVincent de Paul, aspart of their Christmasproject. They alsovisited the Holy FamilySNS, River Valleywhere there was hugeexcitement whenpupils handed over,what can only bedescribed as a moun-tain of food. The eventwas also organised byLocalise, whose

members includedpupils from HolyFamily school.

at Donabate al lweather pitch toremember local lad,Shetemi Ayetigbo.Shetemi was a thirdyear student atDonabate PortraneCommunity College,who tragically lost hisl i fe last May, whileplaying a match forhis club, Belvedere FC.Students, teachers,past pupils andmembers of theDonabate communitybraved the harshwinds and pouringrain of StormDesmond, to turn upto remember theirmuch loved fr iend,Shetemi through whathe loved doing themost, playing football.

Extension OfRural HospitalBus LinkNeededLocal senator, Darragh O’Brien (FF)has called on the Minister forTransport and the NationalTransport Authority (NTA) toprovide funding for the expansionof the Nifti rural transportprogramme. This programmebrings patients from the NorthCounty area to Beaumont Hospitalfor treatment. “Patients going for treatment inBeaumont Hospital have to take atleast two bus trips at the moment,”O’Brien said. “If this service is

extended to Rush, Skerries and therest of the North County, it willmake life so much easier for them.”Being funded by the Dept ofTransport through the RuralTransport Programme, Nifti provideservices in the North County forpeople who live off the main trans-port routes and who have noaccess to public transport. “Thecost of the expansion of the servicewill be minimal and it will meangreater access for patients fromrural villages to BeaumontHospital,” O’Brien continued. Followed by an assessment oftransport needs, the extension ofthe scheme is carried out by theCounty Council and is one of foursuggested new routes. “Niftialready has the buses, so all it willcost is the fuel and wages fordrivers,” the Senator concluded.

The awardwas presented at a special cere-mony held in Farmleigh House.The awards saw primary schoolstudents from around the countryarrive at Farmleigh House as partof a national essay competitionhosted by the Department ofJustice and Equality, to promotepositive attitudes towardsdisability in primary schools. The competition was entitled‘Someone Like Me’. The studentsin attendance were shortlisted fortheir entries, which saw a mix ofwritten and video essays, withmany showcasing their own

disabilities or those of theirfriends and families, all with acommon theme of celebration.Minister O’Ríordáin commented,“The primary schools competitionis an excellent opportunity for theyoungest members of society tohave a carefully thought outconversation around disabilitiesagainst the backdrop of the class-room.” “Amelia is a thoroughly inspiringwinner and her entry was excel-lent,” said the Minister.The judging panel for the competi-tion included Brent Pope, rugbyanalyst and author of many chil-dren’s books including Woody theWhale, The Wheezing Wolf, Bones,Arnold The Anteater and TheAdventures of Herbie.“I was really blown away by thestandard of the essays and thestory many of them were telling. Iabsolutely loved Amelia’s entry,”he said.Amelia’s brother Noah, aged 8,was the inspiration for her story.Noah was diagnosed with autismat the age of three. Amelia loveshow happy and smiley Noah is andwouldn’t change her brother forthe world. Noah also attendsDonabate/Portrane ETNS. Acting County Mayor, Cllr Anthony Lavin, made apresentation to four Malahide volunteers fromMalahide Citizens Information Centre, who collectivelyhave given 144 years of service to the centre andcommunity. The awards presentation took place in theBracken Court Hotel, Balbriggan on Wednesday 9thDecember.Cllr Lavin and Bill Craig, Chairman of the Fingal CitizensInformation Service, presented awards to LizRubbathan, a founding member with 40 years, SheilaHayes (37 years), LouiseDunleavy (34 years) andEithne Murphy (33 years).The presentation of theawards coincides with the40th anniversary of theopening of the MalahideCitizens InformationCentre. Special mention was alsomade to Terry Kavanagh,who has completed 25year’s service with theMalahide centre, and inaddition completed over10 years in the Corkservice also.Certificates were alsomade to students whosuccessfully completed a 14 week in houseIntroductory Information Providers Course. This courseprovides students with the information and knowledgeacross a broad spectrum of topics and the ability toprovide information to the public. In addition studentswho completed the course are further required to

successfully complete a practical assessment beforebeing approved to give information to the public. TheFingal Citizens Information Service has developed androlled out this course to ensure the provision of aquality and consistent service to the public via its fourcentres in Swords, Balbriggan, Malahide and Skerries.Andrew McCann, Development Manager, FingalCitizens Information Service said, “I would like to thankeveryone in the whole organisation, over our fourcentres, especially the volunteers who give their time
