Dear Colleagues,

Right now the economy is a big issue on all Americans’ minds, and massage therapists are no exception. Soaring food and energy prices have everyone concerned, and people are conserving funds by cutting back on unnecessary expenses. Before we let that panicky feeling derived from our own belief that massage may be on the list of discontinued spending when the belt gets tightened drag us down into negative thinking, let’s explore a few options.

Among the massage therapists I speak with, there are only a few that work even part-time in doctor’s offi ces, physical therapy offi ces, or clinics, or that accept health insurance in lieu of direct payment from clients. Perhaps this is a time when we need to be fi nding ways to work more harmoniously with the health care system. This could place us in a good position to be part of changes in the current healthcare system that, due to necessity, will be coming in the next decade. Right now, doctors don’t refer clients to us because we don’t ask them to, they don’t know enough about our work, and we don’t accept health insurance payments- all reasons easily remedied.

I have also observed that sometimes we really don’t hear our clients fully when they tell us how much we have helped them with the physical problems they have faced. When clients tell you how much they value your work, remember that we spend money on those things we value the most.

Looking at the Spa industry, we have an opportunity to capitalize on aging baby boomers, who are just about now waking up to the fact that looking good requires an investment in either massage and spa services, or big-bucks elective surgery. With a little good PR, we should be able to help them make that choice in our favor. The decision between buying yet another fashionable outfi t or a visit to the spa could be an easy choice when you look in the mirror, and realize your face and body are worn with every outfi t in your closet.

As entrepreneurs, we are in the enviable position of never being laid off or fi red (except of course by our clients!) Even if we are employed in a spa, the fact is the clients are ours, and should we be asked to leave, a certain percentage of clients will fi nd us and continue to pay for our services. An appreciation of this advantage and a genuine enjoyment of the measure of freedom it provides us is also, perhaps, one reason why massage has not found an established place in the medical arena- we are wary of losing our freedom.

As entrepreneurs, we are also responsible for our own success or failure. Finding ways to stay positive about the fi nancial status of your massage practice is imperative. Worry, cynicism, and negative thinking will only spiral down into poverty consciousness. What does poverty consciousness create? More poverty! Prosperity consciousness is based on the belief that abundance is the most natural state in the world. What you have an abundance of is dependent on your focus. To create new levels of success in your business, utilize the three components of physical manifestation: desire, imagination, and expectation. Imagine the standard of living you desire, build that dream, and expect it to come to you. Let go of the worries, and face the challenge of being open to imaginative ways of achieving that dream. Trust the fl ow of the universe to support you by presenting you with an abundance of ideas and opportunities that will lead to your success in your career.
