Entertainment OptionsAs the days get shorter and the
evenings longer, sitting in front of atelevision or computer screen everynight can become monotonous.Whether you live alone or share yourhome with family members orroommates, there are a multitude ofactivities to keep you entertained.
Do a puzzle. Piecing together ajigsaw puzzle can be a relaxingsolitary pursuit. If you work on thepuzzle with someone else, interestingconversation usually ensues. Put the
puzzle on a large board or tray so youcan slide it under the sofa or bedwhen you’re not working on it.
Color. Coloring books for adultscan be found at drugstores, craftstores and online. Use markers, colored pencils or traditional crayonsto create a masterpiece.
Make a meal. Try that new recipeyou’ve been thinking about, orrummage through the refrigerator andcupboards to gather randomingredients and then challenge yourhousemates to a cook-off.
Be crafty. Learn origami; teachyourself to knit; or go green byrepurposing old socks or T-shirts intosomething useful. If you have photosthat need sorting, start a scrapbook orphoto album.
Build a fort. Gather a few sheets, clothespins and pillows and constructa cozy getaway. Yes, it’s OK foradults, too.
A Grand GrainSeptember is National Rice Month,
the perfect time to celebrate thisversatile and popular food.
Rice is classified by the size of itsgrain, with long, medium and shortvarieties. Long-grain rice is fluffy, while the shorter varieties have asticky or creamy texture. Thesecharacteristics influence how the riceis used in recipes.
White rice has been processed toremove not only the outer hull, butalso the bran layers. Brown riceretains the nutrient-rich bran, whichgives it a chewy texture andnutty flavor.
Jasmine and basmati rice areknown for their distinctive aromas andtastes. Originally produced inThailand, jasmine rice has a floralfragrance. Basmati, a long-grain ricegrown in India and Pakistan, has amore spicy scent and flavor. Basmati
often goes through an aging processafter harvest.
Arborio, an Italian short-grainrice that has a white dot in the center,is often used for risotto because it canabsorb a lot of liquid and flavor duringlong, slow cooking.
Although the crop is cultivated inmany countries, the majority of riceconsumed in the United States isgrown in Arkansas, California,Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouriand Texas.
