Norochcholai work set to fire offThe biggest development pro-
gramme under the MahindaChinthanaya, the NorochcholaiCoalPower Project, will getunderway this week, Minister ofPower and EnergyW.D.J.Seneviratne declared at afunction in Norochcholai recent-ly, where the villagers, likely topbe affected by the project, werebriefed on the quantum of com-pensation and other develop-ment oriented benefits theywould accrue. Seventy four fam-ilies would directly benefit, theMinister said.
Only 37 per cent of power isbeing generated through hydro
related projects while the restdepends on thermal generationwhich become increasinglycostly in view of the escalatingworld fuel prices. Seneviratneadmitted that Sri Lankan's elec-tricity bills were quite costlywhen compared to other coun-tries.
"If we continue to depend onthermal power our developmentwould definitely crumble. No for-eign investor would like to dumpvast sums of money on electrici-ty bills when it is available atcheaper rates in other coun-tries," the minister explained.
At least after the recent trip
to China, where the people ofNorocholai saw for themselvesthat there weren't any adverseaffects to the environment dueto coal power projects, the peo-ple would not believe in the falsepropaganda of vested interestswho attempted to dissuade thevillagers from agreeing to thecoal power project.
The Minister finally said thatdespite the country's annualrequirement is 150 MW since1994 only 80 MW has been addedto the national grid through theKukuleganga project which iswoefully inadequate to meet theever increasing demand.
