By Harischandra Gunaratna A conman who had duped a num- ber of unsuspecting women on the pretext of marrying them, was arrest- ed by Fort police yesterday. The sus- pect who had been operating with impunity for a long time had been having many alliances with women promising to marry them and relieved them of their jewellery and money amounting to several lacks, police said. After he was arrested he has had in his possession Rs 500,000 worth of gold jewellery taken from unsuspect- ing women. When a team of police officers went to arrest him, he resisted them and tried to assault them, but police were able to overpower him and take him in to custody, police said. According to police among his vic- tims have been teachers, nurses, facto- ry girls, government servants etc. by Sanjeevi Jayasuriya Save the Children in Sri Lanka expressed its sadness over the events of the past few days. It convey its condolences to those families directly affected and raises concern about the increased levels and intensity of violence demon- strated by the suicide attack on the Army Commander and the air strikes and shelling in the Trincomalee area. “As a humanitarian and child focused agency, we are concerned with the levels of displacement these recent events have created, with hav- ing fled their homes in Trincomalee district. We are receiving reports of smaller displacements in some areas of Batticaloa district”, spokesman for the Save the Children said. The organisa- tion has a presence on the ground and is making rapid assessments and arrangements to cater to the some of the needs of children and families who have been displaced during the recent population movement in Trincomalee. “We are now mobilizing to provide packs for 2,000 fami- lies. These include plastic ground sheets, blankets, water containers and water purifica- tion tablets, mosquito nets, cooking utensils and children’s clothes”, he said. Save the Children is pre- pared to take a leading role on any child protection measures required, including if there should be any separated chil- dren. We are also planning to send an assessment team to the affected area to look in to longer term needs such as ongoing education for children. However, it is our fervent hope that this sudden escalation of violence will decrease, allow- ing innocent civilians to return quickly to their homes, he added. by Jayantha de Silva The Government Medical Officers Association yesterday(2) called for the speedy implementation of the Salary Circular 6.2006 as agreed by President Mahinda Rajapakse and setting up a Resources Personnel Committee. The GMOA warned that fail- ure to do so by May 25 will com- pel the 12,000 strong union to resort to trade union action. At a press briefing, the General Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Uditha Herath said that in March, trade unions representing various profes- sions had a discussion with the President. Agreement was reached on five points, which included the setting up of a Resources Personnel Committee (RPC). However bureau- cratic inaction has stalled the imple- mentation of the RPC considered the panacea for existing salary anomalies affecting all island service grades. The core function of the RPC was to submit proposals to the new Salary Commission Co Chaired by Lionel Fernando and Saliya Matthew. In addi- tion, the GMOA calls for the establish- ment of an occupational classification for professions. In a rare departure from the stance traditionally adopted by the GMOA which resorts to frequent strikes to win their demands, the General Secretary admitted that the doctors had been on strike for more than 200 days of any given year. Norochcholai work set to fire off The biggest development pro- gramme under the Mahinda Chinthanaya, the Norochcholai CoalPower Project, will get underway this week, Minister of Power and Energy W.D.J.Seneviratne declared at a function in Norochcholai recent- ly, where the villagers, likely top be affected by the project, were briefed on the quantum of com- pensation and other develop- ment oriented benefits they would accrue. Seventy four fam- ilies would directly benefit, the Minister said. Only 37 per cent of power is being generated through hydro related projects while the rest depends on thermal generation which become increasingly costly in view of the escalating world fuel prices. Seneviratne admitted that Sri Lankan's elec- tricity bills were quite costly when compared to other coun- tries. "If we continue to depend on thermal power our development would definitely crumble. No for- eign investor would like to dump vast sums of money on electrici- ty bills when it is available at cheaper rates in other coun- tries," the minister explained. At least after the recent trip to China, where the people of Norocholai saw for themselves that there weren't any adverse affects to the environment due to coal power projects, the peo- ple would not believe in the false propaganda of vested interests who attempted to dissuade the villagers from agreeing to the coal power project.
