El Camino Real (1984) Alfred Reed“A Latin Fantasy” 1921-2005

El Camino Real (literally “The Royal Road” or “The King’sHighway”) was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the 581st AirForce Band (AFRES) and its Commander, Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler.

The music is based on a series of chord progressions common tocountless generations of Spanish flamenco (and other) guitarists, whose fiery style and brilliant playing have captivated millions ofmusic lovers throughout the world. These progressions and theresulting key relationships have become practically synonymouswith what we feel to be the true Spanish idiom.

The first section of the music is based upon the dance form knownas the Jota, while the second, contrasting section is derived fromthe Fandango, but here altered considerably in both time andtempo from its usual form.

Clair de Lune from “Suite Bergamasque” for solo piano (1905) Claude DebussyArranged by Tom Wallace 1862-1918

The third and most famous movement of Suite Bergamasque is "Clair de lune," meaning moonlight in French. Its name comesfrom Paul Verlaine's poem of the same name.

Clair de Lune MoonlightVotre âme est un paysage choisi Your soul is a select landscapeQue vont charmant masques et bergamasques Where charming masqueraders and bergamaskers goJouant du luth et dansant et quasi Playing the lute and dancing and almostTristes sous leurs déguisements fantasques. Sad beneath their fantastic disguises.

Tout en chantant sur le mode mineur All sing in a minor keyL’amour vainqueur et la vie opportune, Of victorious love and the opportune life,Ils n’ont pas l’air de croire à leur bonheur They do not seem to believe in their happinessEt leur chanson se mêle au clair de lune, And their song mingles with the moonlight,

Au calme clair de lune triste et beau, With the still moonlight, sad and beautiful,Qui fait rêver les oiseaux dans les arbres That sets the birds dreaming in the treesEt sangloter d’extase les jets d’eau, And the fountains sobbing in ecstasy,Les grands jets d’eau svelte parmi les marbres. The tall slender fountains among marble statues.

Paul Verlane, 1869

I hold another revolutionary belief that one ofthe real thrills in attending a live concert is tosee whether or not it’s going to go really well atall. Whether the horns are gonna make thehigh E-flat in Don Juan, whether the stringsare going to be able to manage those impossiblepassages in Wagner and Strauss. That’s part ofthe thrill! You don’t know! But you do knowone thing, that when you’re sitting in OrchestraHall or at any other concert, it’s happeningthere in front of you, and you are a part ofwhat I call the real re-creation of the musicinside the listener! –Alfred Reed

“Music is the silence between the notes”–Claude Debussy

Program NotesShepherd’s Hey (scored for wind band 1918) Percy Aldridge GraingerArranged by Loras J. Schissel 1882-1961

Shepherd’s Hey was originally written forpiano and later scored for wind band in1918. The word ‘Hey’ denotes a particularfigure in Morris Dancing. Morris Dancesare still danced by teams of ‘Morris Men’decked out with bells and quaint ornamentsto the music of the fiddle or ‘the pipe andtabor’ (a sort of drum and fife) in severalagricultural districts in England. The ‘hey’involves the interweaving of generally twolines of dancers, which may be symbolizedby the use of Grainger of two parallel linesof music at the opening of the composition.

Angels in the Architecture (2008) Frank Tichelib. 1958

Angels in the Architecture was commissioned Kingsway International, and received its premiere performance at the SydneyOpera House on July 6, 2008 by a massed band of young musicians from Australia and the United States, conducted byMatthew George. The work unfolds as a dramatic conflict between the two extremes of human existence – one divine, theother evil. The work’s title is inspired by the Sydney Opera House itself, with its halo-shaped acoustical ornaments hangingdirectly above the stage.

Angels in the Architecture begins with a single voice singing a 19th-century Shaker song:I am an angel of LightI have soared from aboveI am cloth’d with Mother’s love.I have come, I have come,To protect my chosen bandAnd lead them to the promised land.

This “angel” – represented by the singer – frames the work, surrounding it with aprotective all of light and establishing the divine. Other representations of light – played by instruments rather than sung –include a traditional Hebrew song of peace (“Hevenu Shalom Aleichem”) and the well-known 16th century Genevan Psalter,“Old Hundredth.” These three borrowed songs, despite their varied religious origins, are meant to transcend any onereligion, representing the more universal human ideals of peace, hope, and love. An original chorale, appearing twice in thework, represents my own personal expression of these aspirations.

In opposition, turbulent, fast-paced music appears as a symbol of darkness, death and spiritual doubt. Twice during themusical drama, these shadows sneak in almost unnoticeably, slowly obscuring, and eventually obliterating the lightaltogether. The darkness prevails for long stretches of time, but the light always returns, inextinguishable, more powerfulthan before. The alternation of these opposing forces creates, in effect, a kind of five-part rondo form (light-darkness-light-darkness-light).

Just as Charles Ives did more than a century ago, Angels in the Architecture poses the unanswered question of existence. It endsas it began: the angel reappears singing the same comforting words. But deep below, a final shadow reappears—distantly, ominously.

“It is obvious that all music lovers (except a few ‘cranks’) loathegenuine folksong and shun it like the plague. No genuine folksongever becomes popular—in any civilised land. Yet these same music-lover entertain a maudlin affection for the word ‘folksong’ (coined bymy dear friend Mrs. Edmund Woodhouse to translate German‘volkslied’) and the ideas it conjures up. So they are delighted whenthey chance upon half-breed tunes like Country Gardens andShepherd’s Hey (on the borderline between folksong and unfolkish‘popular song’) that they can sentimentalise over (as being folksongs),yet can listen to without suffering the intense boredom aroused in themby genuine folksongs.” –Percy Grainger

“I believe that music hasthe power to take us to aplace that words alonecannot.” –Frank Ticheli
