Norlington Bulletin #6 Week beginning: 29/6/2020 Message from the Principal Dear Parents, carers and students As always, I hope you and yours are doing well. There has been a flurry of government announcements and updates with a clear ambition for a full return in September. We will, as always, be reviewing this guidance to ensure any return is managed correctly. Until then student should continue to follow work provided by the school. This includes new projects for Years 7 to 9 which can be found on the school portal. We have been especially pleased with the Year 10 and Year 12 students who have attended onsite school sessions (Onsite sessions are limited to Year 10 & Year 12 as directed by the DFE). We have a lot of catching up to do if we are to be ready for the 2021 GCSE and A-level exams and these are the first steps. Complicating our return is the current building work taking place. We are liaising with the project managers, architects, and builders to ensure as much is completed prior to any return to minimise any disturbance to learning. There are key 4 sections that form our building project. The original aim was to have 3 (Sections 1,3 & 4) completed by the time students return after the summer break. At this time at least one of these will be delayed. Section 1: New sports hall and outdoor sports area/social space. The new gym and outdoor sports area will transform the experience of all students at the school. Completion has been delayed by a further 2 weeks to the end of September due to sourcing issues related to COVID. We should have access to the new facilities by the start of October. Section 2: Demolition of current sports hall and creation of new block (6 classrooms and a new LRC). I am pleased to confirm that the demolition of the current sports hall has begun early (last week). This will minimise disruption and disturbance when students return in September and may even speed up final completion which is currently targeted as March 2021. Section 3: Internal works including canteen expansion, new changing room, new toilets, improvements to G4 (new art/DT room) and G5 (New ICT room) These are all on track for completion by end of August and will be ready for our return. Section 4: Arches - The conversion of 2 arches into weights gym and a cardio/multiuse space. We are hoping work will start within the next 2 weeks. This has been delayed due to permissions from Network Rail linked to COVID. We are aiming for completion at the end of August. This is tight, however, and we may not have usage until mid-September. There are timetabling and rooming implications to these delays and we will be developing plans over the next few weeks. While these improvements have been driven by the school’s expansion to 150 students per year group starting with 2020 year 7, these improvements will be transformative impact on all students. As always I would like to thank all members of the Norlington Family for their ongoing support. These remain interesting times, however, hopefully we are on our way back to more normal times J Hernandez

Norlington Bulletin #6 Week beginning: 29/6/2020

Message from the Principal Dear Parents, carers and students

As always, I hope you and yours are doing well.

Curriculum

Departments are setting work either directly on the school portal or through online learning platforms as they

see best. The information below outlines the main learning resource websites that certain departments are

using and has been updated since the last Bulletin. If a department is not listed it means they are setting work

directly through the portal. There is a government backed website www.thenational.academy and also the

www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize sites which can be used to support the learning already being set by departments.

Please note for most of the learning platforms you will require Google Chrome as Internet Explorer will not

support all the functions.

Celebrating women in engineering! Engineering is a key part

of the water industry - through engineering we can innovate

and help shape our world. Women in engineering roles in

Thames Water vary from on-site technicians to design

engineers working on developing new projects. Today we will

meet three Thames Water colleagues along with UTC

Reading’s Careers Lead and one of her engineering students

to discuss how we can support a more diverse workforce,

challenge stereotypes and provide greater opportunities for

women and girls in engineering.

Please note, this event will be moderated and managed by

Thames Water.

Physical Challenge:

Mr Farnolle has set another Physical Challenge this week.

Flexibility is the range of movement possible at a joint. It is an important component of fitness for all

athletes. Having good flexibility will help decrease the chances of injury, greater strength and improved

physical performance. Stretching is one of the best ways to improve flexibility. The PE challenge for this

week will be a yoga challenge.

1. Select 5 of the yoga poses to perform each day.

2. Hold each pose for 30 or 60 seconds.

Safety tips

1. Ensure you warm up by performing a pulse raiser (jogging on the spot or star jumps) before performing

the yoga poses.

2. Don’t bounce

3. Breathe normally when performing the poses

We’d really love to see some photos of you doing these. Send them to [email protected]

I spoke in a previous email about using this unusual time to do something completely different. Learn a new skill, make a lifestyle change, doing something to improve the environment. Following on from Ms McDonaugh showing us her fantastic nails more staff have shared their lock-down achievements: Mr Lealman-Strutt has been busy growing fruit and vegetables. He has also been showing off his carpentry skills by building vegetable growing boxes.

Dr Saadoune was inspired to write a story based around flash backs and her experiences. The story is written in Arabic and has been published (see below)

Like a lot of the people, many staff have been taking to 2 wheels during the lockdown Mr J Ali (Science) is taking it one stage further. He will be taking part in the London to Dover bike ride to raise money for a school in Ethiopia through Muntada Aid.
