Nowadays with any extra hard copies of business and/or personal information that you have, you will want to make sure you destroy it so it does not fall into the wrong hands. According to shredit.com “A survey by the McMaster eBusiness Research Centre (MeRC) showed that 6.5% of Canadian adults – almost 1.7 million people – were the victim of some form of identity fraud in the last year. By Dave ScottOne of the great advantages of our country is our health care system. We are praised the world over for taking care of our own. We often take it for granted, and perhaps someday that will be our downfall… failing to recognize the repercussion of not planning for the future.As a kid growing up with two sisters and a brother, it seemed we spent our share of time at the old Medical Centre in Port Dover… as a kid you just assumed doctors would always be there, someone would always help. Even as I grew older, I just assumed there would always be a doctor there to take care of me. It never even occurred to me what would happen when well, there were no doctors. I, like the rest of us just assumed another doctor would move here and make this their home and open their practice… huh, pretty naive on my part. I guess the day it finally sunk in, was when I read the letter from my family doctor, Dr. Beaver, saying she was kinda retiring. There was another doctor coming, so her patients would be taken care of. That Dr. Beaver found another so that her clients had a seamless transition however is the exception to the rule.Dr. Beaver, who by the way is an absolutely wonderful doctor (never too late to kiss up), always treated my family, for all our illnesses and took the time to get to know us over the years. Her medical advice to us was always top notch, ‘Thanks Doc!’But onto the big picture… What happens when Dr. Hall and Dr. Wong retire? Who will be there for Dover? If and when this happens, we will be left with two doctors for 6,000 people. And these doctors will, in all likelihood, not be able to take on as patients all the people that Dr. Hall and Dr. Wong currently see in their practices. Without a family doctor, we will be forced to use the emergency room for

medical concerns. How can you get an appointment with a doctor when you don’t have one? … not what we want for any of us, but particularly our children or our seniors. Doctors are people too, they cannot work 24/7 nor should they. Folks let’s face the facts, the days of the old time doctor working 80 hours a week, stopping by your house, squeezing you in for an appointment at the end of the day, are a thing of the past. Doctors who built Dover, like Thompson, Hall, Hynscht Senior and Wong did so because this is, and was, their community but the system has changed… we have changed… and now our process in Dover needs to be redefined, as it has been in communities all over Ontario. Our hope for the future rests on a new Medical Centre in Dover for new doctors, whose vision for a facility is very different from the old-school model we have to offer. New doctors want a turn-key operation where they can practice medicine in a team environment without having to manage their own practices as personal businesses. That’s the model that other communities are building in order to attract doctors. We need to step up or we’re going to lose out. My grandmother for years had Dr. Thompson as her doctor. She loved the man and I know she probably drove him crazy, but he believed in his community and was always there for her. It is time for us to step up as a community and help the leaders of the past connect with leaders of the present and the future…Time is not on our side. A new medical facility is needed in Dover – sooner, rather than later. Until this happens we won’t be able to attract new, young physicians and their families to our wonderful town, who are willing to invest their time and talents in building a new future and vision for medical care in Port Dover.

Sunday mornings are usually spent at the pool swimming but this past weekend I was able to swap my swim trunks for my camera as I took in the Aqua 7 Swim Meet at the ACAC (Annaleise Carr Aquatic Centre) in Simcoe.It was great to see so many kids participating,

with teams from Wilmot and Ingersoll coming down to challenge our very own Norfolk Hammerheads who had 55 swimmers hitting the water.The Norfolk team did not disappoint with Spencer Greenfield swimming the 50 meter Breast Stroke in 46.81 seconds in the boys 10 and under division. With that time Spencer

broke the Hammerheads team record. Congrats Spencer!As for the rest of the team, kudos as well! We thought you might enjoy seeing the rest of the results from this amazing team who will be sending 15 swimmers to the Regional championships this coming weekend in Brantford.

By MARG WERDEN A wetland by any othername is equally important!Pond, marsh, bog, fen, swamp. No matter what name one uses to describe damp, wet, or watery areas, they are all wetlands and extremely important to the health of our environment, as well as our own health. Saturday, February 2 is World Wetlands Day, a day that marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The "Ramsar Convention" is an intergovernmental treaty that embodies the commitments of its member countries to maintain the ecological character of their Wetlands of International Importance and to plan for the "wise use", or sustainable use, of all of the wetlands in their territories. The theme for this year’s World Wetlands Day is “Wetlands and Water Management,” and the objective this year is to raise awareness of the interdependence between wetlands and water, helping people to understand that without wetlands there will be no fresh water.One of the keystones of the Ramsar Convention is the development and

maintenance of an international network of wetlands that are “important for the conservation of global biological diversity and for sustaining human life through the maintenance of their ecosystem components, processes and benefits/services.”Since the Convention on Wetlands came into effect in 1975, over 2,000 sites worldwide have been designated and added to the list of Wetlands of International Importance. These sites have a total surface area of almost 200 million hectares (almost 500 million acres). The Convention did not come into force in Canada until the spring of 1981, but since then 37 sites have been designated as Wetlands of International Importance, with a surface area of 13,086,771 hectares (more than 32 million acres). One of those 37 wetlands is located right here in Norfolk. Long Point World Biosphere Reserve, with an area of 13,730 hectares (almost 34,000 acres), includes a wide variety of habitats including marshes, wet meadows, wooded swamps, beaches and dunes. The microclimate there has resulted in a number of plants occurring there at the extreme northern limit of their ranges, including three endemic and 42 rare species in Ontario. This wetland is a major resting and feeding area for migratory birds, bats and Monarch butterflies. As well, 26 species of reptiles and amphibians live in the

area, including several threatened species. Two other Wetlands of International Importance are located in southern Ontario: Point Pelee National Park and the St. Clair National Wildlife Area.The word “wetland” is an all encompassing term that describes a low-lying area that is saturated with moisture. Within that broad description, however, there are terms used to describe different types of wetlands:Pond: smaller and shallower than a lake, a pond is an inland body of standing water, usually formed in depressions so shallow that plants can grow across the entire area. Sunlight encourages the growth of rooted vegetation, with some plants visible on the surface, while others remain submerged.Marsh: a wetland characterized by grassy vegetation and shallow water, often forming a transition between water and land. Often located at the shallow end of a pond or a lake, a marsh consists of dense plant clusters that provide habitat for many animals. It has less water than a pond and more depth than a bog.Bog: a poorly drained, highly acidic and sensitive wetland habitat dominated by sphagnum moss and dwarf shrubs growing on peat deposits. The nutrient-deprived ground under a bog is not solid; it is a thick mat of decayed plant material known as peat. Bogs take centuries to develop and minutes to destroy.

Fen: a nutrient-rich wetland characterized by diverse vegetation and a high water table with slow drainage from ground and surface water. Slow water drainage aerates a fen’s peat-rich ground, resulting in a greater variety of plant species. The ground tends to be less acidic and richer in nutrients than that in a bog.Swamp: a seasonally or continually flooded wetland consisting of woody plants and trees, located along a river’s flood plain. With little or no peat deposits in the ground, a swamp has more woody plants than a marsh and better drainage than a bog.The importance of wetlands is undeniable: they are home to countless plant and animal species; they filter the water as it passes through; they control flooding during heavy rain; they prevent soil erosion; and, they have been shown to slow the progression of global warming.

YOUNG ASPIRING PORT DOVER SCREENWRITER, KATIE HEMMING, IS ONE OF TOP THREE FINALISTS IN GLOBAL TV’S SIMPSONS COUCH GAG CONTEST. VOTE FOR KATIE TO WIN!

Yes, one of our own residents, entered a contest to come up with a different ideafor the popular animated show ‘The Simpsons’. The producers were looking for an idea for the opening of the show, when the Simpson’s family enters the house and sits on their living room couch. Something unusual and surprising always happens. They received over 3,000 entries. ! ! ! ! ! Katie Hemming entered the contest just before Christmas and didn’t think much about it. Katie, a Doverwood student who went on to graduate from Holy Trinity specializing in Communications has always loved animation. She discovered she was a pretty good writer in grade 4 when her teacher was quite shocked and pleasantly surprised with a story this shy and reserved young girl wrote about a dancing bear.

Katie’s dream is to write for Disney’s Pixar and has seen every movie they produced (more than once).

The winner of the contest wins a 3 day round trip and accommodation for two to Burbank California, sit in on a ‘Simpsons’ script reading with the voice actors, the treatment will be illustrated, animated and may be used in a future episode of the Simpsons with a credit of the winner, and $500.00 spending money.
