There are few things more romantic than walking hand-in-hand with the one you love in winter, all bundled up, stealing a very warm kiss. However, while winter here is magical, spring has always been known as a time of beginnings and renewal. And its here! I think it is evident that the spring has finally arrived – longer & just slightly warmer days, sunshine and birds chirping away in the morning. Cant wait to get the warm sunny days just in time for the new, wedding season 2014!

In this issue you will find advice about staying active, healthy and how to care for your skin when exercising from our local trusted experts Jon Taylor and Louise Thomas-Minnis. We have also added a lovely bridal make up look from Emily Turnbull which is perfect for the fresh and glowing bridal look for Spring/Summer wedding.

One of our most exciting posts in this issue is a real camper van themed wedding with plenty of bright colours, wellies and bunting for that festival feel; and if course, we have 60s inspired styled shoot, that has been put together by some of the most talented Norfolk suppliers.

We had number of great submissions from our lovely wedding suppliers and articles about wedding planning and tips on finding that perfect wedding cake should be of interest to most!

We would love to hear your feedback and thoughts – perhaps you may like to drop us a line?

By the way, we will not have a summer issue – there’s a surprise in store for you – and you will just have to wait and see what it is!

Enjoy,

Hannah & SimonHannah Lucy Stubbs, 28 & Simon Dennis Holbrook, 34 from Sheringham, Norfolk tied the knot back in the 13th September 2013 (Friday!) at the beautiful West Runton Church followed by

their wedding reception at the Wiveton Farm Café.

The couple runs Retro Campers Norfolk (campervan hire for holidays and wedddigs) and they wanted the day to reflect their love for travelling, freedom and adventure so of course the

campervans played a big part at their big day.

THE PROPOSAL After the rental season, we head off to Australia to import more vw campers to the UK, so we are always away at Christmas. 3 years ago we planned an Aussie xmas in August, so a bbq with all the family and got all the xmas decorations out. Simon asked my father for my great grandma’s engagement ring, and he hid it in my Christmas cracker! Everyone wondered what was going on when I started crying when I opened my cracker!

TIME TO PLAN We booked the venue and church before we left for a 6 month trip, then I gave myself 6 months when I got back to do the finer details.

WEDDING THEMEVW campervans of course! We really wanted an outdoor festival style wedding with a country casual theme. The invites went out with the dress code country casual, wellies and straw hats welcome. We had some guests who went all out and dressed up like country bumpkins and even had straw stuffed in their clothes.

COLOUR SCHEME

I didn’t really have a colour theme as such as I love all prints and patterns and love the mismatch look. My sister had always wanted a blue bridesmaid dress so I based the colour theme, around that and the flower girl dresses which were yellow dresses with blue hydrangeas by joules. Anything colourful, fun and floral was the key. The guys went for tweed jackets, floral ties, braces and coloured chinos. Being a skateboarder and surfer Simon wanted to wear a pair of Vans for the big day.

FIRST DANCE

Paolo Nuntini-Candy. Its a song that reminds us of our travels in California. BEST MOMENT

The highlights are driving our campervan convoy along the North Norfolk coast followed by Simons family who had arranged a stunt plane to arrive whilst we were all having our pre-dinner drinks. It was really great to have a surprise on the day. And dancing around with everyone in their evening wellies finished of the perfect day.

WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY?

No loved it as it was. Make the time go slower on the perhaps?

ADVICE & TIPS

Choose a reception venue that put everything together for you and clean up for less stress. The staff at wiveton cafe were great, i gave them a rough idea of what i wanted and left them to it, so it was a great surprise on the day. The most stressful part is probably feeling like your trying to please everyone. You never will so don’t worry about it too much. Look at the big picture, some of the smaller details really don’t matter at the end of the day, its about enjoying yourself with family and friends. Go with the flow it will only happen once hopefully so just enjoy it whatever the weather!

Why You NeedA Map To GetIn Shape ForYour WeddingYou know exactly where you are starting from and exactly where you want to end up.

Health and Fitness

Page 19: Norfolk Brides Magazine Spring Summer 2014

So my sister calls me up last week - she’s lost. She bought something off e-bay and the seller was local-ish so she decided to go and collect it. The place was in the middle of nowhere and even worse no 3G signal so her iPhone navigation system crashed and burned on her! When she called she said she had a “rough idea of where she was going.” Infact she was miles out. Don’t get me wrong, sat nav, google maps, 3G is great but it can make us lazy. Too reliant on something outsideour control to get us to where w want to be. It’s why I love MAPs (geek I know!)

You know exactly where you are starting from and exactly where you want to end up. AND - this is the biggie - a STEP BY STEP plan for getting there. Your chances of succeeding go through the roof all because you know 3 VITAL things. 1) Where you’re at RIGHT now2) Where you want to GET to3) The ACTIONS you need to take to get there. Then you just got to get in the car and drive. Simple. Getting into shape for your big day is exactly the same.. You need a MAP.

Most people skip this bit. (New year resolutions is a classic) They just rely on having a basic idea of how to get there and hope that somehow they do.

A random approach equals random results. Then guess what happens? Correct, they get lost. Caught in no-man’s land with only a 12-month gym membership and low calorie shake for company! Worse, they have no idea what to do next so just do a quick 10 minutes on the stepper, a few of those things on the swiss ball and then hop off for a sauna. “Phew.. I hope no one noticed that I didn’t really know what the hell I was doing!” Been there? I get it. People tell me this time and time again.

Try this instead. Create your own MAP. 1) Where are you at RIGHT now? How do you feel about your body? Do you feel stuck? Frustrated? Why do you want to change it? 2) Where do you want to get to? Visualise the dream you on your big day. Feels good right? Make that image strong and powerful. How would owere there now? 3) What actions do you need to take? This bit’s simple - ASK FOR DIRECTIONS! Get someone to show you rather than working it out yourself. How to eat, how to train, how to get motivated and inspired. Don’t be scared to ask for directions. Doing it yourself usually results in you getting lost - back to where you started at best so you can try again. And get lost...again...

It’s exactly why we run structured, 12-week transformation programmes. Designed to get you to EXACTLY where you want to be with a MAP of the entire trip - start to finish. The places our clients end up on this progarmme is something else. Not just leaner, lighter fitter and stronger but feeling awesome - like new people. Plus you’ll have your own coach, who knows the route sat in the passenger seat the whole way with you to help you make that dream wedding body a reality.

With the prospect of Spring making it easier to get outdoors and pick up some exercise, you might be considering getting in shape to feel your best on your Wedding day.If you followed my recent YouTube challenge #projectclearskin, then you’ll know that exercise is an important part of improving your skin health too. What can we do to ensure that our skin stays in top condition whilst we’re working out? Here are my answers to some related questions...

Q. HOW SHOULD I PREPARE MY SKIN FOR EXERCISING? SHOULD I NOT WEAR MAKEUP?

A. Prior to working out, ideally you should wash your skin with a mild, non-drying cleanser and apply a lightweight oil-free lotion. It’s important that you have the skin clean free of foundation makeup prior to working out since the skin, when warmed, will act like a sponge sucking in dirt, grime, make up and chemicals (Eye makeup and lipstick are fine to wear.) Should you really feel the need to wear foundation, try mineral-based powders as they are sweat-resistant and won’t clog the pores. We love the CoffeeBerry perfecting minerals.

Q. WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO WEAR MOISTURISER?

A. When you exercise, you lose so much water and salts (by evaporation) out of the skin, leaving the skin ‘dehydrated’. ‘Dehydrated’ skin increases surface lines and causes skin cells to die prematurely, leading to premature ageing. Dead skin cells will build up causing the pores to clog. By using a lightweight moisturiser you will help to retain the water in the skin. If you are exercising outdoors don’t forget you must ensure you use a sunscreen. I love Elena Rubins Carpe Diem.

Q. SHOULD YOU AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE DURING A WORKOUT?

A. Absolutely! Use a soft, clean towel to mop your brow. Also the equipment at the gym breed bacteria, so it’s best to keep your hands off your skin as you don’t want to introduce bacteria to the skin which can result in new break outs, or the spreading of existing break outs. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before hitting the showers and applying your cleanser to your face.

Q. HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO DRINK LOTS OF WATER BEFORE AND AFTER A WORKOUT? & WHAT ARE THE ‘SKIN HEALTH’ REASONS?

A. Since you lose so much water from perspiration, it’s crucial that you replace it by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after workouts. This can also help keep the skin dehydrated. I like to add some Cucumber slices to my water bottle as the electrolytes help to retain more hydration and will sometimes treat myself to a Coconut water as a post workout drink or a big mug f green tea.

Q. HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY SKIN AFTER I WORKOUT?

A. Gently cleanse the skin with a wash. I love the Vitage revitalising facial cleanser which is effective at removing any traces of make up, sweat and dead cells. Follow up with a moisturiser which contains ingredients to help to calm and constrict the delicate capillaries which would have been busy during your work out. Camomile, acerola cherry and green tea will all give the skin this support.

CONGRATULATIONS!This story has made us cry so we decided that it must me a competition winner -Congratulations Nicky & Andy - you won a £25 voucher to spend at Debenhams!

“My partner Andy and I were on holiday in Cuba, just a week ago. We were there for the second time as we just fell in love with the place. We both work so hard, day in and day out and cram in so many hours we never seem to get enough quality time together, so holidays for us are super important. We had gone with my parents which was fantastic as they are just like friends to us and we are both very close to them. It was only the second day in when after a lovely evening meal we all decided to head of to the bar, Andy then said he really fancied a walk on the beach just the two of us, so of we went. While walking down to the beach he began to talk of how he loved our time away together and how important it was and how he loved our little adventures we had and the fun. I then accused him of being drunk, hahaha, he just laughed and said no and on we walked. It was a beautifully clear evening and all the stars were out, it was gorgeous. We were just strolling hand in hand when he started to talk about us again, then as he bent down to his knee he began to say “there has been a reason I have been so skint these last few months” and out from his pocket he pulled the box. He opened the box to a sparkling ring. The next part was all of a blur really, I was in complete shock and so excited and happy all at the same time. He asked me to be his wife, I do remember that bit, and with all that was going on I hadn’t even said yes! After then accepting his proposal he placed the ring on, it fit perfectly. He had had the ring specially made, he had designed it all himself. He has even kept all his drawings and rough copies he had made of it before choosing the final design. It is beautiful. I have always loved butterfly’s ever since I was a little girl, I just love them. Was the best thing ever, such a personal touch. We then went to the bar, grabbed a bottle of bubbly, headed straight back to the beach, and celebrated just the two of us

while laying back and watching the stars. So in one word...PERFECT!!”

For a while now I’ve been mad for the teal blue and burnt orange colours synonymous with the ’60s. Mid century furniture, beehives, whisky in hand and a cigeratte dangling from the lips of a handsome man. It’s all Mad Men inspired, of course. It didn’t take me long to find the team for making this vision a wedding-themed reality. Photographer Joe Black and I met, discussing our ideas – I knew that his sharp, dynamic images would be perfect for this look.

Make-up artist Flamingo Amy should be known as the beehive woman, so she was a must. And we had the charming cat-eye creator in make-up artist Kathrine Sayer.

The results of this shoot were beautiful and I have to thank everyone involved, including the models – Cat, Lovette and Jake – and my friend and stylist for the day, Lauren Garwood. The pictures are so hard to choose

They had to be vintage, so Lauren and I spent days scouring Ebay, vintage shops and even charity shops for the perfect dresses. We found the short dress online, and hemmed it up. The hooded dress we found in Norwich’s Big C charity shop, which has a bridal area upstairs (opposite John Lewis) and the pink bridesmaids dress was from the little vintage shop at the bottom of Earlham Road – it’s a great little shop, definitely worth a visit.

The Dresses:

Page 27: Norfolk Brides Magazine Spring Summer 2014

We’ve written about floral designer extrodaire Jo Flowers before but initially, we weren’t going to approach her – it’s not really her style. However, when we mentioned we were doing this shoot she enthusiastically suggested a possible creation and volunteered her work. It’s a testament to her creative vision – she can turn her hand to many styles. The bouquet that she created added such value. The colouring – very pale almost ‘antique’ pink roses sat alongside the centres of flowers that she’d dried (the perfect burnt orange hue I’d had in mind). We managed to match the colour to our groom’s tie. And the also put a streamer hanging from the handle of the bouquet. It reminded me of the kind you had on your handlebars as a child…

The Flowers:

Page 28: Norfolk Brides Magazine Spring Summer 2014

A location, however, wasn’t easy. Where can you find the perfect mid-century setting outside of NY or London’s East End? In Norwich, apparently. Jerry Dye of Ark Mid Century (a furniture website that will have you drooling) was kind enough to let my small possey invade his family’s home. If I’d have to design and build a set myself, no matter what the budget, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Everyone was very envious of his and his wife’s style.

The Location:

Page 29: Norfolk Brides Magazine Spring Summer 2014

A 1959 Cadillac car for wedding hire – one with the largest fins every released onto the roads – later, and we were in dream land. ALL in Norwich, I tell you. What are the chances? It’s available for hire and if you’re looking for the wow factor, this is the car. The windows of the car – its curves and chrome were a photographer’s dream. Faces framed in the doorway, the lines of the car leading off into the corner of the frames… it makes me think that we must do a styled shoot purely around a car soon. It’s based in Norwich but the owner will go anywhere in the country, although you do have to pick up the fuel bill!

This bridal makeup look is perfect for spring / summer and for anyone who wants a modern take on classic vintage inspired eyeliner flicks teamed with strong lips. Perfect for both fair and olive skin tones, shades of violet and plum paired with soft neutrals are great for those who aren’t afraid to make a statement with their bridal look. This beautiful bouquet and flower crown introduce gentle, pastel colours which help to keep the look soft and feminine. This look would also work perfectly for any bride wishing to channel the 1920’s style for her wedding – team with marcel waves in the hair for a decadent, fashionable Gatsby inspired look.

Page 33: Norfolk Brides Magazine Spring Summer 2014

Get The Look

1 - Picture perfect skin needs a great foundation. Illamasqua skin base (£25, Illamasqua.com) gives a great buildable coverage, and comes in a huge range of shades to suit everyone, from the very fairest skins to the very deepest. For this look I used shades #6 with a little #2 on the high points of the face to brighten and highlight.

2 - Use matte, neutral shades on the eyes to balance the pop of colour from the purple liner. Urban Decay Naked Basics palette (£20, Debenhams) has great lighter and darker shades of cream and brown which can be used for both brows and for natural definition across the lids.

3 - This beautiful plum eyeliner is a gel, which is easy to apply and super long lasting. Tones of plum are perfectly suited to most eye colours, but will really make green eyes “pop”. For this look I used Mac Fluidline in Macroviolet (£15, maccosmetics.co.uk). I added strip lashes in a natural, fluffy style to help to really frame the eyes and add definition – Ardell lashes are great as they are natural hair and light and easy to wear (boots.com).

4 - A soft pink shimmery blusher will add a healthy flush of colour and give a fresh, radiant feel to the skin – I love Giddy Pink Blusher from Bare Minerals (£19, Debenhams).

5 - A lip liner to ensure a perfectly defined lip with plenty of staying power, and this lip is kept matte to give a more retro inspired finish to the look. This lip liner is Currant by Mac (£12, maccosmetics.co.uk) teamed with Bare Minerals Lead The Way Lipstick (£16, Debenhams)

Expert Advice

Don’t leave it too late… to look for a cake designer, dates do get booked up quickly, especially in the summer months. It is not unusual to book an appointment 6 months to a year in advance of your wedding. You may already have a firm idea of what your wedding cake will look like, but if you don’t, take a little time to browse different cakes on Pinterest or Google Images. This will help you to identify your likes as well as your dislikes.

What style?…Tiered cakes, mini cakes and cupcakes; you will find plenty of designs for inspiration. Different shaped tiers, some with pillars or separators, cupcakes on vintage style cake stands or cupcake trees with a top tier for cutting. For a more unusual choice you might consider a Croquembouche, high tiers of decorated profiteroles assembled with toffee. Those of you who don’t have a sweet tooth might opt for cakes made with whole cheeses and decorated with fruits or flowers and served with savoury crackers. Think about the look you are trying to achieve for your wedding day.

Cake choices…treat your guests to one or more flavours. Madeira sponge comes in a choice of flavours such as vanilla or citrus. For richer cakes and chocolate lovers choose Chocolate Fudge or Red Velvet Cake with complementary buttercream fillings. A flavoursome fruit cake follows tradition or you could choose a lighter, fruity Carrot cake with zesty cream cheese filling. Ask to sample some cake flavours that you think you would like. Your cake designer will also advise which cake choices are the most suitable for your chosen style.

Decoration…this will depend on the style of your wedding, your theme, your colour choices and your budget. This is where taking a look at some images prior to meeting with your designer can help. Your options are vast and varied…fresh flowers, sugar flowers, a personalised cake topper, royal iced scrolls or moulded lace…your cake designer will listen to your thoughts for your day and ask questions to help with the design of your cake. For example, are you following a theme? Do you like simple and classical or whimsical, contemporary designs? Your venue, your dress detail and chosen colours may also be taken into consideration.

Budget…do share this with your cake maker. Your cake designer will be able to advise you what can be done to stay within your price range. The decoration is the most costly part of your cake – the more elaborate the design, the more hours it will take to complete. Delivery and set up…your cake designer will want to provide this service for you, as they want your cake to be perfect in every way on the day. Let them take responsibility for its safe delivery and set up, it will save you or another family member unnecessary worry. Don’t try to save cost here…it could cost you your cake!

Here I have chosen a white twill base fabric for the shirt body, have teamed this with a half cut away collar and straight cufflink cuffs. To add some style details to this I have chosen navy buttons with white button hole and button stitching as well as contrasting inside collar and cuff fabric in a thick navy pinstripe. This would be the perfect shirt to accompany a navy suit for a spring wedding.

On this option I have chosen a light purple / pink herringbone for the main shirt fabric which has a texture to it, in etiquette standards making it slightly more casual. The collar is a classed as a cut away collar meaning it has a wide space between the collar points, again leading itself to a more casual environment. The cuffs are a two button mitred option coupled with white buttons and purple thread. On the inside front placket I have gone for a white oxford fabric, this again is a textured fabric that will offer a contrast if worn with an open neck i.e. no tie. This is a great option for a more casual wedding, perhaps with a tan linen suit in the height of summer?

Although I have given you some suggestions and shown options available, there are plenty more and there is no right and wrong, it’s whatever suits you and fits in with your scheme that’s the true beauty of bespoke!

I have decided to go for a grey twill fabric, more of a formal look with a slight diagonal texture to the cloth. I have teamed this with a strong kent three button collar with matching three button straight cuffs, often seen on a Vivienne Westwood tailored shirt offering a strong long both with and without a tie. The buttons are in charcoal with matching colour threads, I have also used the same thread for the monogram stitching on the left hand cuff a really fabulous must have detail!

Expert Advice

The Role ofan IndependentWedding Planner

They say that the average wedding takes around 200 hours to plan. Having been there and done it, I can safely say I think it could be more like 300. Now that’s a lot of planning. Especially if you have a job, children, or both!

So there is definitely a need for hiring a wedding planner but many couples are still unsure of what it involves and at what detriment to their budget.

What is an ‘independent’ wedding planner?

An independent wedding planner does not work exclusively with just one venue or supplier, meaningthey have enormous flexibility to create a bespoke and tailor-made day for you

What’s the difference between a wedding planner, wedding coordinator and wedding consultant?

Nothing really! They all do the same thing - help couples create and plan their dream day - but just opt to call it something else.

But our booked venue already has a wedding coordinator - why would we need anyone else?

Venue coordinators are great at what they do and will ensure that the aspects of the wedding they are responsible for run according to plan and are kept under control. But this is usually limited to venue-related matters and they’re not responsible for making sure yourphotographer gets paid on time or your table decorations are collected from the hire shop, for example. They may also have limited supplier contacts and for larger venues, your coordinator may be responsible for more than one wedding on the day. A professional independent planner will work in harmony with your chosen venue, on-sitecoordinator and all the staff to ensure that nothing is forgotten or overlooked.

What services can an independent wedding planner provide?

Each planner will have their own ‘menu’ of services. I personally offer anything from a simple, one-off brainstorming consultation to help you streamline your ideas, all the way up to Complete Coordination - being there in the early days of your engagement, continuingwith you on your wedding planning journey, right up to the day after the wedding when I help you clear up!I’m really intent on being a DIY bride and I’ve got some good ideas.

Will a wedding planner just want to do things their way?

Any good wedding planner will encourage you to be a DIY couple. After all, that’s what makes your wedding day extra personal and about YOU! They certainly won’t ‘take over’ your day or force their own ideas upon you, but simply be there to alleviate some of the more stressful aspects of

Wedding Planner

planning, like managing your budget or RSVP’s - leaving you with some extra time to make your table plan!

But isn’t it really expensive? Our budget just won’t allow it.

You don’t have to have unlimited funds to afford a wedding planner. In fact, they can actually help you save money by managing your budget realistically and keeping a reign on it! The right planner will be invaluable when you think of how much time, effort and stress they will save you during your engagement period. They’ll also keep on top of payment deadlines and a timeline of your day, reducing the chances of having to pay overtime fees for your suppliers. Maybe you could compromise on some one-off services, rather than a complete planningpackage, if your budget is stretched.

What should we look for when hiring a wedding planner?

The most important thing is to arrange a consultation or interview with any potential wedding planner, even if this is just over the telephone initially. You have to determine that you can work with someone and that you can trust them handling this very important life event before you sign. You should know instantly if you’re on the same wavelength and feel a ‘connection’ with them. A good wedding planner doesn’t necessarily have to have a formal qualification, however, you should definitely ask for testimonials from previous clients and check these out toensure they are legitimate, and make sure they have the correct insurances in place, too.

What other tips can you give us?

If you have booked a venue that doesn’t have a designated wedding coordinator - for example, a marquee site or hired property - I would highly recommend hiring an independent wedding planner for at least ‘on-the-day’ coordination to make sure things runsmoothly. After all, your bridal party should be celebrating the day with you, not doing meet-and-greets with suppliers. Timelines, timelines, timelines! - it is all well and good trying to ‘wing it’ but your planning (and the wedding day) could come unstuck without some real structure. A good wedding planner will be all about drawing up a timeline for the day........a great one will be drawing up a timeline for your whole engagement period and sending you calendar alerts!
