A STEP BACK IN HISTORY! by John James On April 26th, over thirty OPR/PCA members assembled at Mickey D's in Gig Harbor to tour out to the LeMay Family Museum in Spanaway, WA. In 2014, we toured the Lemay--America's Car Museum in downtown Tacoma, but this year, we decided to travel to the home of the LeMay's to view the origin of what once was the largest automotive collection in the world.

Located in two locations, one in Spanaway and the other two miles away in Parkland, and run by Harold's widow Nancy and their son, Doug, both locations are jam-packed with not just cars and trucks, but fabulous memorabilia. From a full blown 50's soda fountain display, complete with mannequins, early T-birds and early Fords, to a salt shaker collection with 2,200 salt and pepper shakers. We were told by our guides, Mike and Doug, that one of the old cars Harold bought contained over a thousand salt and pepper shakers in the trunk, starting yet another collection!! 6

Our first stop was at the family home in Parkland which was the original collection site and houses hundreds of vehicles including a Packard collection, a Stutz fire truck, early brass era vehicles, Chrysler 300 letter series vehicles and several exotic 30's million dollar collectables. Want to visit what a 1930's general store looked like? Well, the Lemay's have one ready for viewing. Our next stop was to Godfather's Pizza where the food was great and so was the service with plenty of parking for our Porsches.

Last stop was to the LeMay's second location,

Marymount. Formerly a Catholic Military School run by

the Sisters of ST. Dominic.---HONEST---The LeMays have used every square foot of this 88 acre property to grow the collection and save a Spanaway Landmark.

Page 7: NOR’WESTER2014/07/08  · 25th – 10A Tech Session at Griot’s Garage – Interiors February 2014 1st – 5P – Movie Night at Brownsville Yacht Club – JR & Tina Leaman 12th

The boy’s gym is now used for large gatherings such as weddings, car shows & collector car auctions, but still has 30's Chevrolets lining the upper seating areas! Even the boy’s showers contain vehicles!

The range of vehicles is expansive from an Indy car to a huge selection of 40's and 50's vehicles and another group of 20's and 30's classics, plus the obligatory gift shop. Did I mention the collection of US Military vehicles outside and the LeMay's next project? A 1930's railroad dining car!

If you have not been to visit the LeMay Family Collection, a trip to Spanaway and Parkland should be on your list of ten things to do before 2013 comes to a close. A special thanks goes to Trudy Coughchin, of the Museum staff for organizing OPR's visit to this, a fabulous treasure. My special thanks to all who attended. John James

Bremerton Armed Forces Day Parade 2014 by Maryann Elwell

I found out an interesting fact this year, did you know

that the Bremerton Armed Forces Day parade is our

nation's largest and longest-running Armed Forces

Day parade? On May 17th our club participated in the

66th annual parade through the streets of downtown

Bremerton. The parade is a tribute to our service

men and woman that put their lives on the line for us

every day and whose families make sacrifices, as well.

This year we had good weather, so we didn’t have to

worry about rain. We started at MAXRPM with coffee

and bagels with cream cheese. After everyone

finished eating and cleaning up their cars, it was time

to head over to Olympic College for staging. This year

we had about 8 Porsches in the parade, including one

car from PNWR driven by Veteran, Chris Wierman.

Other participants included Neil Green, Alex Raphael,

Brett Burroughs, Kip Sparber, Tony Adamaski, and

the Isars. Thanks for Neil Green for providing us with

patriotic bows and military and US flags to decorate

our cars.

Shortly after we arrived at the Olympic College

parking lot, we were told we needed to stage on Park

Ave. It took a while, but eventually everyone found

their way over and got parked across the street from

the Park where all the bands and equestrian units

were practicing and getting in line as their turn came

up to march. Since our OPR banner matched my car,

it was decided that I would display the banner and

lead our cars through the parade route.

This year we were in the last group, so had a longer

wait until it was time to join the parade. It gave

everyone time to talk and catch up while we waited

as well as hit the head.

Eventually, it was our time to depart and we made

our way through the parade route. The parade began

at 11th Street, proceeded down Park Ave. to Fourth

Street and turned left into the heart of downtown.

The long straight stretch spread out the crowd and

offered better sight lines for the spectators. It was

great to see the whole community lining the streets

in support of our Service Members and waving back

at us as we drove by. After we passed the judges and

VIP stands, it was back to MAXRPM.

We arrived back at the parking lot to find fellow

member Darwin Geary, who drove down from Port

Angeles, waiting for us to begin the BBQ. A few

minutes later, Debbie showed up with several bags of

food and Brett picked up some beverages to get the

party started. As the rest of us socialized, Brett and

Alex got the grill fired up and started cooking lunch.

We had a nice BBQ lunch thanks to Alex and Debbie

Raphael for hosting us at the shop and Brett

Burroughs for his assistance as well. I also want to

thank all of our members who participated in the

parade. I checked the Bremerton Chamber of

Commerce website, but we didn’t end up winning any

awards this year. Maybe next year.

In the Zone by Tim Hagner

It’s that time of year: Porsche Drive time. In all our

Regions the snows have melted, the roads are clean

and the Porsches are being driven. Starting in May

the events start coming at us every weekend and they

don’t slow down till October. I know that some of our

regions can drive all year. I’m jealous. Those regions

not along the Pacific Ocean aren’t as fortunate and

live with “Driving Seasons”; it’s better than

Christmas, so let the driving season begin. Oh, don’t

forget to apply for your insurance and sign the

waiver.

Lots of Zone 6 activities and news - First Big News,

Living Skies Prairie is now our 16th Region. There

was a Launch Party in Saskatoon on May 31st that I

was happy to attend. They have 41 charter members

and will grow rapidly thanks to an enthusiastic group

of Porsche People and the support of their local

Dealer, who was there in force to support the event. I

look forward to a return visit, flight, not drive; it’s

over 2,000 miles one way from my home in Bend!

We are a BIG Region!

Zone 6 at Parade in Monterey went very well. Thanks

to all of you that made it to the reception. To my old

eyes we had close to 300 Zone 6’ers out of the 360

that registered for Parade. I tried to say “Hi” to as

many as I could. Hope that you enjoyed it. Zone 6

took lots of awards and prizes home, too many to list

here, but one Zone 6 couple took home a new Targa.

Mark Titterton of Vancouver Island Region won the

PCA raffle this year and was presented the new

Porsche Targa at the Victory Banquet. He had no clue

until the end. A new Targa to go with the Targa he’s

been driving for the last 30 years! How cool is that?

Oh, he only bought one ticket. Guess I’ll start buying

them.

Here’s a “Shout out” to the Club Racers in our Zone

who are earning points in the West Coast PCA Club

Racing Series:

Phil Rochelle, Class C, currently in first place

and Chris Chamberlain, Class GTA, in second place.

Canada West and Pacific Northwest are hosting the

Whistler Weekend, August 22 – 24. This will be a

great Porsche event and get-a-way. I’m looking

forward to being there and seeing you there also!

The Zone 6 logo contest is still going on from now till

September 1st. There are lots of talented people in

our zone and I’m sure there will be no lack of great

ideas. I know this because I’ve received 11 logos

already! The winning logo will be announced on

September 15th. Send your logo submission to your

regional President and they’ll past it on to me. The

Zone 6 website has all your entries and can be

viewed at www.zone6-pca.org. Hope to see you soon

and don’t forget: it really is about the people.

Tim

Porsche Parade 2014 by Maryann & Bill Elwell

We can’t believe that the last day of Porsche Parade

2014 is already here. The week flew by with a

multitude of events for all tastes. We’re sitting in our

room after tonight’s Victory Banquet, the closing

event for this year’s Parade, knocking out this article

so that Brian can include it in the newsletter. But

let’s start from the beginning …

First, if you’ve never heard of the Porsche Parade,

shame on you! The Parade is an annual gathering of

Porsche club members from the US and Canada.

Activities include tours, Concours, autocross, rallies,

tech quizzes, and much, much more. This year

Parade was held in Monterey, CA from June 15th

through the 21st. There were 1200 attendees, the

biggest Parade ever. Estimates say that there were

over 500 Porsches at the event. While some flew in

and rented cars, others drove from as far away as

Alaska and Newfoundland. Now that you know what

it is, here’s a little about our experience this week.

Friday morning Maryann left Shelton, WA with three

other Porsches for the first day of the drive down to

Parade. Our destination on the first day was Gold

Beach, OR. Our group included Jon and Linda Wyman

in their black 911 Turbo, Alex Raphael in his white

911 Twin Turbo, Brett Burroughs in his Super-

charged silver 911 and Maryann in our speed yellow

911 C4. We headed out on Hwy 101 south. We took

a detour through Raymond where we met up with

PNWR member, Jim Sheppard, in his seal grey 911.

From there we got back onto Hwy. 101 south to

continue the rest of the way through Washington

State.

Before we knew it we were crossing the bridge into

Astoria. I didn’t realize how ornate all the bridges in

Oregon are. The Oregon bridges all had elaborate and

ornate stone carvings. After several hours of

invigorating driving through the twists and turns, we

finally made it to our lunch stop at the Joe’s Crab

Shack. The crab cocktail and crab burger were off the

hook delicious. We headed back onto the road for

Gold Beach and made really good time after our

11

coffee break in the cute little ocean side town of

Bandon, OR. We arrived at the Pacific Reef Resort by

around 6:30P. The Ocean View room Maryann had

was really nice with sliding glass doors out to a small

patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean. That night we

had dinner at a local place called Spinner's Seafood,

Steak & Chophouse. I think we all ordered seafood

and everyone raved about their dinners.

After a good night’s sleep, we had a quick breakfast at

the hotel’s restaurant and then split up. Jon, Linda,

Jim and Maryann continued our drive down to

Monterey for the parade, while Alex and Brett headed

back to Portland for the Rose Cup races. Maryann

was supposed to pick up Bill at the San Jose Airport at

around 3P. After going through several towns with

speed limits down to 25 miles per hour it became

apparent that she was running behind schedule.

Unfortunately, time was not on her side and she

didn’t reach the airport to get Bill until around 5:30P.

At least he had his laptop and was able to catch up on

e-mail while he waited. After leaving the San Jose

airport we reached our destination, the Hofsas House

Hotel in Carmel, CA, around 7P on Saturday night.

We arrived just in time to join John and Linda for

dinner downtown, on the outdoor patio of the Hog’s

Breath restaurant.

The big task on Sunday was to complete registration

for the week long Parade Event. Registration

included standing in lots of lines to collect up all the

bits and pieces we needed for the week. A big part of

Parade is volunteering to help out with the hundreds

and hundreds to tasks necessary to make the event a

success. Sunday afternoon, Bill helped the Concours

team setup the golf course for the Concours the

following day. Setup included placing roughly 240

flags, one for each car, at 15’ intervals along the 18th

fairway. While Bill volunteered, Mare washed two

days to road grime off the 911 at the wash rack.

Sunday night was supposed to be concluded with a

wonderful outdoor dinner in downtown Monterey.

Dinner happened as scheduled, but the wonderful

part is up for debate. Temperatures were rather

Page 12: NOR’WESTER2014/07/08  · 25th – 10A Tech Session at Griot’s Garage – Interiors February 2014 1st – 5P – Movie Night at Brownsville Yacht Club – JR & Tina Leaman 12th

chilly, in the mid 50’s, with a pretty good breeze.

Before the buffet lines opened we talked it over with

Jon and Linda and decided to find a warmer place to

eat. A local British pub called the Crown and Anchor

served us a great dinner and, most importantly, we

were very warm.

Monday started with Bill working a volunteer shift at

the car wash station and Maryann helping park cars

at the remote parking site. After lunch we walked

through the cars on display for the Concours

competition. When you combine the cars in the

competition (nearly 240) with the cars that were on

display, there were over 300 of the most amazing

Porsches you’re ever likely to see.

That night there was a reception for anyone

attending Parade from one of the Zone 6 regions.

Yes, the Olympic Peninsula Region is part of Zone 6.

Following that was a Presidents banquet where Jon

and Linda represented our region.

Tuesday and Wednesday were light days for us.

12

We took in an ice cream social event. We had dinner

each night in Carmel, Tuesday at Grasing’s and

Wednesday at Cantinetta Luca. Carmel has an

amazing collection of great restaurants.

Things picked up again on Thursday with the

Gimmick Rally. In a Gimmick Rally you follow a set of

driving directions and answer questions about things

you saw during the drive. The driver/navigator team

with the most correct answers wins. We didn’t win a

trophy, but at least our score was in the middle of the

pack of entrants. Thursday’s dinner was at Bistro

Giovanni, another fine example of fine dining in

Carmel.

Friday was a long day for us. Our schedule included a

tour to the Hearst Castle. Driving to the Hearst Castle

from the Parade site takes about 2.5 hours each way.

Combine that with the time for the castle tour and

time to eat lunch and you can see why the driver’s

meeting was held at 6:30am. It is a fascinating place

to visit. If you didn’t know, the Hearst Castle was the

home of William Randolph Hearst, most known for

his newspaper publishing empire. For some it may

be difficult to comprehend living in a house with

nearly 70,000 sq. ft. of space and 38 bedrooms (not

including guest houses). Regardless, the design and

architecture is remarkable. Our favorite room was

the dining room. Anyone that has seen a Harry Potter

dining room as the inspiration for the dining hall at

Hogwarts Castle. Our trip included a stop at a beach

near the Castle where elephant seals spend their

days. We managed to get back to our hotel room by

about 4:30pm which gave us just enough time to get

washed up and head out to dinner at Casanova’s, also

in Carmel. Casanova’s was, by far, our favorite dinner

of the week. If you’re ever near Carmel, you might

want to check them out.

This brings us to Saturday, the last day of the Parade.

At 7:30am we had a driver’s meeting for a tour to

Scotts Valley to visit the Canapa facilities. Bruce

Canapa is the founder and CEO of Canapa Designs,

Canapa Motorsports, and Concept Transporters. The

Scotts Valley facility houses all three companies plus

the Canapa Motorsports Museum.

We were given tours of three facilities there in Scotts

Valley. The Motorsports is a full service automotive

restoration and fabrication company. We saw

projects in progress including Porsche 356’s, a

Porsche 959, Ferrari Daytonas, Lamborghinis, and

race cars of all types. From there we moved to the

showroom to see the cars for sale. There were more

Porsche’s on the showroom floor than any other

marque. Yes, there was a 959 for sale. Most of these

cars had received hundreds of hours of restoration.

The final stop in our tour was the Motorsports

Museum. Here we saw a collection of race cars and

motorcycles that ranged from notable race cars from

the 60’s through to a Porsche RS Spyder, LeMans

Prototype (class 2). We could spend a few pages just

to scratch the surface of the Canapa tour. A

paragraph hardly does it justice. After leaving there,

our group was given a special treat. We drove to

Laguna Seca Raceway where we were given parade

laps of the track. What more can we say? What a

day!

The Victory Banquet was the closing event. After a

great meal, awards were given for the tech quiz event

and the 5k Run. Awards were given to regions with

significant community service activities. Door prizes

were awarded and the 2015 Parade location of

French Lick, Indiana, was announced. The volunteers

that put this massive event were recognized. And

with a closing prayer, it was all over. The week went

by so quickly. We will simply close by saying that all

the people we met were absolutely wonderful and if

you have the opportunity to attend a future Porsche

Parade, by all means, do it. It’s a wonderful

experience.

Technology on the Road – Actuators, Solenoids, Wax Motors

and Shape Memory Alloy – Bill Elwell

When I learned about the use of a shape memory

alloy (SMA) material in an actuator on the new C7 Corvette, I thought it was a really cool use of technology that I had to write about. Hopefully you think it’s as cool as I do, though I guess you have to be a bit of a nerd to think this sort of thing is cool. So be it.

Before I talk about SMA materials and their applications, it’s appropriate to talk about actuators in general. An actuator is a type of motor that controls or moves some sort of mechanical device. When we talk about actuators in cars we typically think about devices that open and close flaps in the heat/cooling system, or that electrically lock the doors, or that electrically release the trunk or hood lid. But there are many other applications. The thermostats in our cooling systems are actuators. Mechanically retracting headlights like you find on a 944 or 928 are driven by actuators. Finally, I have to warn you that the following discussion really should have illustrations to make it easier to visualize. Space and time didn’t allow me to include pictures, so you’ll have to visualize it all in your head or do some Google searches to see pictures online.

A type of actuator found in the heating systems of

older cars is a vacuum actuator. They are simple devices that use a diaphragm, a spring, and the vacuum from the engine intake to move little doors and flappers. When there is no vacuum present, a spring holds a plunger in its resting position. When vacuum is applied, a pressure differential is created across a rubber diaphragm which, depending on the design, either extends or retracts the plunger. Typically we’re talking about plunger motion of an inch or less. While these devices are simple, the diaphragms can crack with age. Vacuum hoses crack with age. Engine repairs or modifications can compromise the vacuum system. Any one of these issues can render all the vacuum actuators in a car inoperative.

Another type of actuator frequently found in cars

is the linear solenoid. In its simplest form, a solenoid is a coil of wire with a steel or iron shaft that can move in and out of the center of the coil. A spring holds the plunger in its resting position. When electric current is applied to the coil, a magnetic field

18

is created that, depending on the design, pulls in or pushes out the steel shaft. Almost every one of us has at least one car with a hatch that can be electrically released. You press a button on the dash or on your key fob and you hear a click and the hatch, hood, or trunk lid pops open. That’s a linear solenoid in action. Engineers use these all over our cars today. They are simple and reliable. The downside to linear solenoids is that they are heavier than some other design options, they make an audible click when they operate, and their size and shape limits where you can place them.

If you have a newer 911 with electric releases for

the trunk and engine compartments, you could experience one of the downsides to solenoids. There is no easily accessible manual hatch release. If the battery dies, you can’t open the trunk or engine compartment to jump start the car. Do you know how to open the trunk or engine compartments if the battery is dead? I wrote an article about this issue a few years back. Your owner’s manual will tell you how to do it if you didn’t read my article.

One question that must be on your mind is, “what

in the heck is a wax motor?” It’s actually pretty simple. A wax motor is a linear actuator that is driven by the expansion and contraction of a wax slug as it is heated and cooled. Various types of waxes will expand in volume from 5% to 20% when heated to their liquid form. The operation principle should be pretty familiar by this point. Start with a wax slug in a container with a movable plunger at one end. A spring holds the plunger in its resting state. If heat is applied and the wax melts, the plunger will, depending on the design, extend or retract. Remove the heat and the spring will return the motor to its resting state as the wax solidifies. If you have a front load washing machine, there’s a good chance that a wax motor (that uses electricity to melt the wax) operates the door lock mechanism. If you drive a vehicle with a water cooled engine, the thermostat that regulates the flow of coolant in the engines is a clever application of a wax motor. As the engine heats up, the wax in the thermostat melts and opens the thermostat to allow coolant to flow. As the engine cools, the wax will start to harden and shrink closing the thermostat. Waxes with various melting temperatures are used to create thermostats that

Page 19: NOR’WESTER2014/07/08  · 25th – 10A Tech Session at Griot’s Garage – Interiors February 2014 1st – 5P – Movie Night at Brownsville Yacht Club – JR & Tina Leaman 12th

operate at different temperatures. Wax motors operate very slowly so their application is pretty limited.

Now we can finally talk about SMA’s. An SMA is a

metal that has “memory”. Let’s use an example to illustrate how SMAs work. Imagine a wire made of SMA material is formed or “trained” into the shape of a tightly coiled spring. At room temperature we can twist, stretch, and contort the spring very easily and it will retain the new shape. Now we apply heat to the wire. Once the wire reaches its transition temperature it will return to its original shape of a tightly coiled spring.

Let’s talk about an actual application. Let’s say

that we want move a lever to open and close a flapper that regulates airflow. To open and close the flapper, we need to move the lever arm about an inch. We’ll use a spring, a piece of SMA trained into the shape of a tightly coiled spring about an inch long, and an electronic controller that applies an electric current across the SMA to heat it up. Just like all the other actuators, the spring will be used to hold the lever arm in its resting position which, in our example holds the flapper closed. The SMA coil will be installed to oppose the force of the spring holding the

flapper closed. In its resting state, the spring holds the flapper closed and stretches the SMA coil so it is now two inches long. When we want to open the flapper, the electronic controller applies an electric current to the wire, heating it up. This triggers the SMA to “remember” its original shape which is a one inch long tightly coiled spring. SMA contracts, pulling the lever arm and opening the flapper. When the electric current is removed, the SMA cools and begins to stretch, allowing the spring to close the flapper again. It’s a simple and elegant design.

Compared to an electric solenoid, an SMA

actuator is very light and it can designed fit into spaces where an electric actuator won’t fit. And where an electric solenoid makes an audible click, the SMA actuator is silent. An SMA actuator doesn’t move nearly as quickly as a solenoid and it can’t apply as much force compared to a similarly sized electric solenoid. So SMA devices can only be used in specific applications.

Social Chair: Pete Fischer: Pete provided a summary of upcoming events for May and June 2014. May 24th is the Sunday drive

starting in Port Orchard. 11 RSVPs so far for the May 30th dinner at the Boatshed in Bremerton. The Bremerton Armed Forces

Parade is scheduled for May 17, 2014 and we have about 6 cars so far, but would like to have more. The Pacific NW Historic

Races will be held from July 4 – 6th and payment for car corral and tickets must be received by 5/31/14, since we need to order

them as a group in early June. Debbie Raphael will book the June 11th Dinner/Meeting at the Club House Restaurant at

McCormick Woods. The Dinner/Meeting for July will 12th be in Port Townsend, then Brian’s Sunday drive will be July 20th. Pete

is planning a drive to the social dinner at the Selah Inn on Aug 9th. We are looking to have all 4 rooms booked (2 so far) plus 10

couples for dinner to get the BYOB deal. Please see our website, www.opr-pca.org for more details.

Technical/Speed: Alex Raphael: He just finished working on a 2014 Turbo S in the shop bringing to over 600 horsepower, if

anyone wants to stop by MAXRPM and see it. The Rose Cup in Portland is June 13th-15th: On Friday June 13th some members

are driving down with the parade group to the overnight stop in Gold Beach, OR. Then on Saturday they are stopping at the

Rose Cup races in Portland on the way home. If interested contact Alex Raphael or Brett Burroughs for more information.

OLD BUSINESS: Maryann inquired about reserving a location for this years’ upcoming Christmas party. Maryann researched

the Inn at Gig Harbor and they are available only on Sat. Dec 6th. Debbie researched the Oxford Suites and Beach Hotel in

Silverdale and both have our date of Dec 13th available. Members also requested we consider going back to the Manresa

Castle, and the catering person told Maryann they would hold Dec. 13th date for us tentatively. Alex Raphael asked if we

should consider the Alderbrook again, now that those who had a problem with the cost are no longer OPR members. Pete

Fischer and Susan Smith mentioned as the winter season approaches they usually drop their rates and offer specials closer to

dates they are not full. Not sure what they give us up from as a group rate ahead of time if we had our Party there. Discussion

at the meeting led to taking the Oxford Suties and Beach Hotel in Silverdale off the prospective list. Debbie Raphael will

research availability and meal and room pricing for Alderbrook, so we can vote at the June meeting in order to book the place

and provide our deposit to hold the date for us.

Goody Store: Neil Green. Neil thanked John James for wonderful tour at LeMay family museum. Neil recommended we may

want to just keep the existing club logo for some items, especially those we already have made. He still thinks we could use a

new logo for clothing and other things. Cost of about $100 to have the digitized program set up. We might even want to do one

for men and women. We need to decide if we want to go with something new and set up a committee. Neil presented several

drafted options for the club to think about at the meeting. Recommended that we show at future meetings to get more input,

before making a final decision.

NEW BUSINESS: Debbie talked to a person at McCormick Woods and they will allow us to come try it out next month to see

how we like it. We’ll be on the other side of the main restaurant. They would like us to have 20 people. She could book for us

for June 11th. Maryann motioned to try it for the June 11th meeting. Jon Wyman seconded, and all were in favor.

Meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m. with a motion made by Maryann Elwell, with Brett seconding the motion and all in favor.

Respectfully submitted:

Maryann Elwell for Amy Bonfrisco, Secretary

The next board meeting and member dinner will be on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Club House Restaurant at McCormick

Woods with dinner at 6:00 p.m. followed by the meeting at 7:00 p.m.

Social Chair: Pete Fischer: Pete provided a summary of upcoming events for June and July 2014. June 29th

is the Sunday Drive starting at the McDonalds in Shelton. The Pacific NW Races will be held from July 4-6th and tickets can be

purchased at the event. To date 10 cars have signed up for the event. The next board and member meeting will be held on July

12th in Port Townsend and Pete will be exploring a venue to hold the event. Pete is also planning a drive and social dinner at

the Selah Inn on August 9th and presently three members have reserved a room, and one room remains. 16 people have signed

up for the event and four more people will need to RSVP to meet the quota for a minimum of 20 attendees. Additionally, Pete

announced several upcoming car shows, including: the Gig Harbor Wings and Wheels car show, which will be held by the Gig

Harbor Cruiser Auto Club on August 3rd; the Taste of Hood Canal in Belfair on August 9th, and the Werks Reunion, which is

being sponsored by PCA in Monterey, California on August 15th.

Technical/Speed: Alex Raphael: Announced that members can now purchase the new HRE wheels at Max-

RPM. These wheels are 5.4 lbs lighter than standard wheels and were on demo at the technical event his

shop sponsored in March 2014.

OLD BUSINESS:

Holiday Party: Maryann and Debbie reported on the venues they researched for the 2014 Christmas party. Debbie

announced that the Alderbrook’s pricing ranged from $125 to $250 per person, and included a room, dinner, and breakfast,

but did not include any alcohol or beverages at the event, and therefore would run at a minimum of $500 per couple. The

Silverdale Beach Hotel, would provide a catered event with a choice of three entrees with a dessert for approximately $45 per

person. Rooms ranged from $89 to $99 per night and there is availability to schedule the event in the ballroom for Saturday,

December 6, 2014. Maryann announced that the Inn at Gig Harbor, would offer a sit down dinner, with meals ranging from $25

to $31 per person. There may be a $50 bartender fee, but depending on the size of our group such fee may be waived. The

room rates would run approximately $105 per night. Maryann moved that the membership vote on the three options. There

were 0 votes for Alderbrook; 14 votes for Silverdale. 4 for Inn at Gig Harbor and 2 members abstained from voting. Maryann

will work on getting a deposit to the Silverdale Beach Hotel to hold our date of December 13, 2014.

Goody Store: Neil Green. Neil reminded members that he had been working on a new logo for Zone 6, and previously

submitted our club’s logo to the Zone 6 representative. However, because no other clubs submitted a request, he resubmitted

the logo but has not received any response on next steps to date. Maryann offered to follow up with the Zone 6 representative.

Neil also announced that he is working on a secondary logo for our club with Debbie and Alex Raphael and will have demos

available at our next board and member meeting. Andrew Isar inquired if there was an online good store and Neil reported

that there is no such online store but that he could work directly with Andrew or any other club member who was interested

in submitting an order.

NEW BUSINESS: Several members inquired about making business cards to distribute to prospective members. Based on this

recommendation Maryann made a motion to order 500 business cards containing pertinent club information. Andrew and

Brett seconded the motion. All were in favor.

Meeting adjourned at 8:02 p.m. with a motion made by Barb Hanford, with Brett seconding the motion.

Respectfully submitted:

Amy Bonfrisco, Secretary

The next board meeting and member dinner will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Silverwater Cafe, located at 237

Taylor Street in Port Townsend with dinner at 5:00 p.m. followed by the meeting at 6:00 p.m.

SOVERN Strikes Again by Brian Forde

The 26TH Annual Pacific Northwest vintage car races were held at Pacific Raceways over the Fourth of July

weekend. The Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts, known as SOVERN, is the organization that makes this annual

summertime treat possible. The cars and the people are amazing and I love how participants and spectators have a

chance to share in the experience of vintage racing.

Our own OPR members were out in force adding our own Porsche flavor to the car corral and enjoying the thrill of

parade laps during the mid-day break. This year was the 50th year of the Mustang and legendary Parnelli Jones was

on hand to sign autographs and greet fans. This event is a spectacle of colors, sights and sounds and should be

marked on your calendar every year to be shared by kids of all ages.

From the President by Jon Wyman

Linda and I have just returned from Porsche Parade in Monetrey, CA, which was held June 15th - 21st. This

was our first Parade and we certainly picked a good one to attend! This Parade had the highest attendance

of any Parade PCA has ever had. There were approximately 1200 cars registered, and 2400 people in

attendance. We drove down with Alex Raphael, Brett Burroughs, Maryann Elwell and Jim Shepard from

PNWR. Brett and Alex drove down half way with us and then returned to Washington, stopping in Portland

to attend the Rose Cup Races. The second day Maryann, Jim, and Linda and I drove on the rest of the way.

While at Parade we participated in several events, including the opening reception in downtown Monterey,

the Concours Awards Banquet, the Presidents' Reception, a tour to Hearst Castle, and the Gimmick

Rally. All were fun events. The Concours D'Elegance, held on Monday, June 16th, was an amazing array of

Porsches from early to current models. There was a special display of race and specialty Porsches that are

part of the legend of Porsche, including a 917, a 917-30, a 962C, a GT1, a 1951 Pre-A Coupe, and a 959. This

really highlighted for me how racing has shaped Porsche's image and development as a brand. I have to say

"Congratulations" to Dan Kalinski for winning his class in the preservation category at the Concous. If

you ever want to participate in a concours Dan would be an excellent person to ask!

The tour to Hearst Castle was well run and included some spectacular scenery. We first went down the

central valley then transited over to the coast. On the way back to Monterey we drove on Highway 1. That

is some of the most spectacular scenery and fun roads on earth. I had always wanted to drive on Highway 1

in a Porsche and I can now check that off my bucket list.

The Gimmick Rally was also a fun event and included two loops. One was a coastal route that included the

famous 17 Mile Drive and Pebble Beach Golf Course. The other was through the rich farm land of the

Salinas Valley and Castroville. We actually did that rally with Bill and Maryann Elwell. Our scoring on the

rally landed us in the middle of the pack--not too bad for our first rally.

The receptions were fun, and, the only noteworthy thing that happened was that I shook hands with Hans

Peter Porsche, who was attending as a representative of the Porsche family.

All-in-all it was really fun to attend our first Porsche Parade. We met some great people along the way and

we now have a better understanding of the PCA tag line: It's not just the cars, it's the people.
