NOR RUB B E R E L A S TOM E RIC B E A RING P A DS Nor Rubber Elastomeric Bearing Pads and strips are manufactured with CHLOROPRENE (Neoprene®). The compound is accordingly with the international standards. All bearings are calculated through the CEN prEN 1337, and we manufactured according international standards, DIN 4114 or BS 5400 Part 9.
W h y L a m i n a t e d N e o p r e n e E l a s t o m e r i c B r i d g e B e a r i n g s ? All reinforced concrete metallic structures are subject to certain movements such as those caused by temperature changes, wind, traffic, external action or even by their own movement. This causes the need for support elements which absorb or transmit the load trough to the structures foundation.
The Bearings allow the translational and rotation displacements and the absorption of sort duration horizontal loads, as well as vertical loads. They are also holders of high resistance levels to the deterioration caused by the weather conditions.
These pads have no moveable parts and thermal expansion and contraction are absorbed by the pad’s ability to give and take in shear. There is no sliding motion between pad and beam or between pad and abutment.
A d v a n t a g e s o f N e o p r e n e E l a s t o m e r i c B e a r i n g s Elastomeric Bearings are designed and manufactured in order to receive translational and rotation displacements by elastic deformation. They consist of individual layers of rubber with steel plates inserted between them. The steel plates and rubber are vulcanized together giving a bond on their connection faces.
The formulation of the rubber (bases on polychloroprene synthetic rubber) assures a very long life and a very high resistance to oils, solvents, ozone and chemical products contained in the concrete.
Elastomeric Bearings are suitable for application within a range of temperature of -22 F (-30ºC) up to +122 F (50ºC), and until 158 F (70ºC) for short periods.
Also Nor Rubber can provide the bearings with a layer of PTFE and a stainless steel sliding plate.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The low rubber deformity module, both at compressions effects at tangential efforts, make the rubber as the better material to manufacture bearing pads which requires big loads and small turns and movements.
They should operate correctly under normal weather conditions, as long as their maintenance is respected during their useful life. Additional precautions should be taken if they are operating under specific weather conditions.
VERTICAL LOADS In the following tables is showed the maximum working loads. At these loads it could be expected a deflection of up to 15% of the original height. The holes or cuts could have an important effect by reducing the load capacity and increasing the deflection. The compression load should not be higher than 100-150 Kg/cm2.
SHEAR DEFLECTION The allowable shear deflection is about 30-50% of the compressed bearing pad thickness. Shear deflection of up to 65% may be considered, but careful consideration should be also considered, or with other systems, such as Sliding Bearings (with a layer of Teflon, PTFE). Bearings should not be used under constant and heavy shear forces, although they are designed to support shear displacements. The minimum vertical load to avoid sliding in the structure should not less than 30 Kg/cm2; If not, an anchored bearing should be used.
ROTATION When big turn occurs, important height will be required, but the total effective height of the rubber should be lower than 1/5 of the smaller horizontal dimension. Under certain conditions this limit can be 1/3,33. It is important that no gap occurs between the structure and the bearing pad. The rotational capacity is included in the tables.
INSTALLATION The mating surfaces should be flat, parallel and free from cavities or protrusions. A professional installation is needed for optimum use and service life. It is preferable for the structures surfaces to have rough texture without lubrication, oils and hydrocarbons. A gap (minimum of 12mm) around all slides of the pad must be provided.

LAMINATED BEARING PADS (Rectangular & Round)
It is the most common due to bigger tolerance during their installation. The bearings are fully covered with elastomer. It could have holes. Usually the plates are all with the same dimensions and equidistant. They allow translational displacements in any direction, and rotation displacements, on any axis, by elastic deformation, in a way they may convey the projected forces from one structural component to another.

BEARING PADS WITH METALLIC WEDGE (Rectangular & Round)
The plate placed in the higher position is replaced by a metallic wedge. This allows the bearing to get adapted to not parallel surfaces, as longitudinal slope. When installation takes place, bearing position should be that metallic wedge is placed in the higher side of the bearing. Not advised with slopes over 5%.

EMBOSSED (GOFFER) BEARING PADS (Rectangular & Round) One way to anchor is with profiled outer steel plates. In these cases movements are not transmitted. Goffer bearings are mainly used for static loads.

ANCHORED BEARING PADS (Rectangular & Round) In case the compression minimum load is under 20 kg/cm2 for bearings with less than 400cm2 or under 30 kg/cm2 and over 1200cm2, the bearing should be anchored to the structure to avoid its movement. This type is special useful where traction and high horizontal forces are to be transmitted. It can transmit small movements (about 10% of the total admissible compression) when the anchor is made with welding or screwed bolts. Anchored bearing should be designed considering the possibility to be removed and replaced.

SLIDING BEARING PADS (Rectangular & Round) There is the facility to allow for larger movements by adding a sliding system: a PTFE sliding bearing (slim PTFE layer bonded to a laminated bearing pad) in combination with Stainless Steel mirror finished surface.
