‘Tak kenal maka tak cinta’ (you will never fall in love with someone until you get to know him).

Some might associate this in the context of love towards human being, but for me it is more than

that. This popular Malay saying is enough to portray what I am going to story; the beauty of

Islam as the religion of all time, anywhere, through all means.

On the 18th October 2012, I was one of the luckiest

students who were involved in Student Exchange

Toronto IIT-IIUM. At first, I thought this would be a

great gateway for me to escape from this student life

which somehow bored me up to an extent. Spending

mid semester holiday with friends and celebrating

Eidul Adha away from family sounded awesome at

that time (blame the rebellion genes). We started off

our journey to the southern side of the world to

explore and gain knowledge for the sake of Allah.

Frankly speaking, I never expected more than just

having fun, literally.

During the meeting with the officers in IIUM before our departure, as what has been understood

earlier we had been informed that there might be slightest difficulties in terms of observing our

prayers there as well as performing our religious duties because of the fact that we are visiting a

NON-Muslim country. One of my friends even informed me that her parents would not allow her

to bring black Abaya and Hijab; afraid that we will be targeted as the extremists. However,

soonest we arrived in Canada; we totally changed our perception towards people there. The

bond among the Muslims there is as good as the bond between Muslims and Non-Muslims

themselves. How can I even say that? Here’s why.

During the 4th day of the visit, we were in the middle of visiting Museum of Civilisation located

in Ottawa, where not many of Muslims live there. As we were wondering around appreciating

Page 2: nor Katrina anis “ ““ “ Tak kenal maka tak cinta”” ” –” ––– Malay ... · ‘Tak kenal maka tak cinta’ (you will never fall in love with someone until you

histories, it was time for Zuhr prayer. As expected, obviously there was no Musolla or mosque

around that area like what we can find in KLCC or MidValley so we tried to find solutions in

order to ease our journey but at the same time not neglecting our obligatory prayers. One of the

Museum staff approached us and asked if there was any difficulties. After explaining to him, he

went to see his supervisor and 5 minutes later, he came and said “You know what, you can pray

here. We will open a conference room for you to perform your prayer. Just lock the door once

you’re done.”. Upon shocked, we thanked him for the hospitality provided. Yes, it was a

conference room, far better than what we had expected.

The adventure did not end there. During our visit to Niagara Falls (YES! Niagara Falls!),

we had quite similar difficulties which was in respect of performing prayers. After looking

around for suitable place to perform, we came across a spot in the middle of a park. We started

to form our saf in the middle of the park where people kissing and making out here and there.

(May Allah forgive us). Without any hesitant, we spend 15 minutes of our time there despite

people looking at us in awe. See, da’wa can be done in so many ways!

After spending 9 days in Canada, on the 10th day we went out to buy stuff for our

beloved families back home ( talking about homesick, huh?! ). During the journey, we heard a

call of prayer from the volunteer’s cellphone and immediately she parked the car facing kiblat

and started performing her prayer. After 30 seconds of amazement, we followed her act. See, no

one can be excused from delaying solat. Despite having fun shopping for the families, they never

use that reason as an excuse to delay or even not performing prayers.

Some might say that people who observe their Islamic teachings will never be a

successful person here in this world. They are trying to set our minds that in order to success in

Hereafter, we have to sacrifice our position in this world. No, it shouldn’t be that way. The foster

father of the male participants is a successful specialised engineer which has 7 hi-tech

workshops with incomes of 2000 Canadian Dollar PER HOUR for ONE WORKSHOP. Yet, his

children are huffaz (memorise Quran) and can recite Azan and al-Quran in very melodious and

soothing rhythm. They always get CGPA 4.0 throughout their studies and obey their parents

very well. Enough said.

These make me realized that we are taking things for granted as we are living in this

comfort zone. Being in this circle of comfort and blindness make us not realize that we’re losing

something very precious; our imaan and identity. And for me, nothing beats this experience that

I will reminisce and share to all.

The days I have spent in Toronto, Canada was

definitely the best days of my entire life. To even

own the opportunity to be there was even more

than I had ever imagined. I have to say, I was

nervous at first -- the fact that it was my first time

traveling on my own accompanied with eight other

students who I am yet to get to know better, but the

trip turned out pretty much memorable which I will

cherish for the rest of my life.

The warmth that the people I met during my stay in

Toronto, Ottawa and almost everywhere I went to is

the warmth that I had never experienced here in my own country. The people are so nice, so

cheerful and the positive energy that I had received makes it hard for me to leave Canada. The

relationship, the ukhuwwah that had been built among the people I met is something for me to

keep it as a gift and they shall be in my prayers, always.

In addition, the most memorable piece of memory I shall treasure is the fact that I get to learn

Islam, see Islam and feel Islam in the place where no one would ever think to ever have received

such experience. Praise be to Allah, to gain such experience is wonderful and I am glad Allah had

chosen me to be there. I was chosen for a reason and the best thing I would like to do is to share

my experiences with my friends in Malaysia and be grateful to Allah for such blessings. I would

love to give back to the ummah, spread Islam and embrace Islam in the best way I can.

Thank you, IIT. This trip had been an amazing, wonderful and eye-opening. Canada is

beautiful and the people I have met are as beautiful as the country itself. Thank you Mr Farhad

for organizing an awesome trip! I would love to come here again! I am missing all of my families

back in Toronto already! Thank youuuu! *teary eyes*

My trip to Canada that co-organized by IIT and IIUM, is a trip that I will remember forever. A

journey with other University mates, and all the volunteers, members and directors of IIT makes

the journey beneficial to my friends and I.

Firstly, through this trip, it enables me to learn about Canadian culture, especially, the culture of

Muslim community in Canada. Canadians especially Muslim, consist of many races and cultures,

because most of the Muslim people emigrate from their countries, for instance Pakistan, India

and Guyana. Even though there are many different races; in perspective of mazhab and culture,

the people, seem to be adapted well together. Canadian Muslim community showed me how

beauty of Islam is, by helping each other, even though they come from different backgrounds.

Secondly, what I learnt from this trip, is how to develop a true muslim family. Staying with

muslim family is one of the advantages of this trip, that enables me to learn deeper of how

muslim families in Canada work and operate. The family that I stayed with, showed me that, the

family members doesn’t need to be strict about the appearance. Muslim boy can still can wear

jeans, and not wearing Islamic cap (kopiah), but still show how beauty of Islam is. I learnt that, it

is more important to have internal values, compare to external values. Internal values like, the

pure simple understanding of Islam, seriously mesmerize and broaden my view about how

beauty Islam is.

Thirdly, what I learnt from this trip is, how beauty and workable, the relations between muslim

and non-muslim in Canada. From the explanation of the scholars I met, they mutually agreed

that, it is proper and good to have mutual connection with non-muslim, even though Jews as a

dakwah. This beauty of relations impressed me, how can in non-muslim countries, the muslim

can live peacefully, having good relations with other religious community, how government

respect and entertain all the difference among citizens , and how free and beauty is the Islamic

practice , can be done , in Canada .

I sincerely hope that, I can be back in Canada, in future insyallah.

The trip to Canada makes me realise

something; we, the Muslims in Malaysia are

pampered and sometimes because of this we

always take things for granted.

From my trip, I learnt that sometimes the lives

of Muslims in the non-Muslims country are

more Islamic than Muslims in the Muslims

country. The Muslims there have to fight for

their right while us our government has provide

every facilities and utilities needed for us, the

Muslims.

During my trip, I am grateful and lucky to have the opportunity to meet well-known and great

people in Canada. They are Shaikh Abdullah Hakim Quick, Shaikh Ahmad Kutty, and Imam Zijad Delic,

Br. Abdalla Idris Ali (ISNA), Brother Taha Gyayyur (DawaNet), Lina Rahman (DawaNet), Arif Zia

(DawaNet), Omar Zia (UIA), Br. Ashraf Baddar (Sayeda Khadija Centre) and many more.

The trip to Toronto also enables me to meet most of the Main Board of Muslim Student Association

(MSA) in University of Toronto (Scarborough campus and St George Downtown). Meetings with

them help me to understand more what MSA is all about, what are their functions in the university

level and what kind of activities they usually held. MSA not only make collaboration with other

Muslims Organization but also with the non-Muslim Organization which is quite impressive.

Page 7: nor Katrina anis “ ““ “ Tak kenal maka tak cinta”” ” –” ––– Malay ... · ‘Tak kenal maka tak cinta’ (you will never fall in love with someone until you

When we were at the St. George Campus, we had the opportunity to meet several Malaysian

students and got the chance to exchange knowledge and experience with them.

Visit to Canada also had opened my eyes how great Islam and Muslims are. Even the Muslims in

Canada are the minority, but they were able to open up quite a number of mosque and knowledge

centre. Not only that the non-Muslims there also nice and friendly. Once when I was in the subway,

an aunty approached me. She was very nice and the never once when we having conversation she

had a negative thought towards Muslims. It is so true that Canada is a free religion country and the

government always supported the Muslims directly or indirectly.

Canada also has many interesting places to visit. My favourite place would be the fascinating Niagara

Falls. Subhanallah, the view is so beautiful. I can say that the view of the fall is the most beautiful

one that I had ever seen on Earth! No words to describe how beautiful Niagara Falls is. You have to

see them yourselves. Another place is the Eaton Centre. The atmosphere inside was very much alive

and crowded with people. I really enjoy myself with the live performance and shopping there.

Last but not least, my lovely host family. My host family consists of a single mother with a 7 years old

son; ‘mom’ Bibi Nazeela Rashid and Zain. Both of them are very nice to me. Mom treats me as if I’m

her daughter and little Zain is happy to have me as his elder sister. They also politely ask me to live in

their house as if it is my own house. All this make me feel grateful and thankful to them. I am very

lucky to have them as my host family. On the last day of my stay, we went to a Malaysian Restaurant

as they noticed I already missing Malaysian food. Not only that, they always pack food for me to

bring out because they know how packed my schedule was every day. They were very thoughtful.

Only Allah can repay their kindness to me during my stay there.

Besides that, there are so much experience that I gain and so many new friends that I make and all

this happen because of this trip. I really hope that I can join this kind of programme in the future.

Masyallah, the knowledge and experience that I gained from this trip is priceless.

“ Experience Canada’s beauty, diversity “ Experience Canada’s beauty, diversity “ Experience Canada’s beauty, diversity “ Experience Canada’s beauty, diversity

and hospitality”and hospitality”and hospitality”and hospitality”

From the 18th of October until 27th of October 2012, I was given the once in a life time

opportunity to visit a country that I had only dream of going, The Great White North of Canada.

It was a student exchange program organized by my university.

To be honest, I did not know what to expect when I went there. I know very little about

Canada. Yet my journey was amazing. From the very first day we departed, I felt as if I had

landed in heaven. I had learned new things, I discovered new discovery, and I gained new

experiences. Canada was far better from what I had imagined.

Yet, the best thing about Canada to me was the hospitality. When the day to fly finally

came, my heart was pumping, my feeling was full of nervousness and my mind was full of

curiosity yet at the same time, the feeling of joy and excitement filled me. After 22 hours of flight

and a transit at Abu Dhabi, we finally reached Toronto and were greeted by Mr Farhad Khadim,

the President of the Islamic Institute of Toronto and our host families.

Page 9: nor Katrina anis “ ““ “ Tak kenal maka tak cinta”” ” –” ––– Malay ... · ‘Tak kenal maka tak cinta’ (you will never fall in love with someone until you

Wallahi, they had been amazing hosts. I had never imagined such hospitality. They treated

us as if we are visiting Kings and Queens. No, maybe even better. They treated us as if we are

their own flesh and blood. Every single day in Canada, I felt as if I am at home. I felt as if I had

never left Malaysia and Canada had forever been my home. I felt in debt with their kindness. It is

not easy treating a guess that you had never known before and accepted them as your own

child. I too take them as my family. All of them were like my mother and father, my brothers and

sisters. For the very first time in my life, I can really imagine what ‘Islamic Brotherhood’ is all

about. I can imagine how the brotherhood was like during the time of the Prophet. I never

thought I would actually discover the true Islamic Hospitality in Canada.

Canada is not just famous for their beauty of the Niagara Falls and the chilly and cold weather

but also for their people. Everyone that you meet will ensure that you will feel welcome in

Canada, even from non-Muslims. The best example was when we were in Ottawa visiting the

Museum of Civilization. We wanted to find a place to pray and we asked the staff if there is any

place to do so. They told us that they will open up a conference room and set it up for us so that

we can pray comfortably. MasyaALLAH. I cannot believe such generosity and hospitality. It is

something that amazed me that they will go up to that level in taking care of their tourists. I

really have a high respect on their attitude in respecting others. They will ensure you that

everyone is welcome in Canada regardless of your race or religion.

Today, I might be half across the world. Yet, I NEVER felt Canada was far from me. As from

that day, Canada is very close to my heart and soul. If I were given another chance to visit

Canada for just ONE DAY and to go through a long hours of journey hustle and bustle, I would

definitely do it. This is because ‘my family’ is there and forever, they will be a part of my life.

A chance to spend 10 days in Canada (spent

most of the time in Toronto; – Ottawa -

Quebec) as part of IIUM - IIT Student

Exchange Programme was dreams come

true for me. I have to admit I had no idea

how much my cross-cultural trip to Canada

would broaden my perspective before I

went there. O Canada! This vast land has

gorgeous landscapes, thriving wildlife,

colourful Native Canadian cultures, and

modern cosmopolitan cities - not to

mention a language selection of English and

French.

In conclusion, The Greater Toronto Area has one of the most ethnically diverse Muslim

communities in the World!

I thoroughly enjoyed this experience especially spending time with my lovely host family.

Staying with a host family is an opportunity for cultural exchange. I must admit I have seldom

felt more at peace while travelling away from home. I was placed alongside with Qurratu ‘Aini,

to stay in the house of ‘dad’ Kareem and ‘mom’ Safoora Hamid. They have 2 daughters about our

age, Atiya and Mobeena. I felt so welcome whereby these people are friendly, very polite,

educated and have a sense of joie de vivre. My host family provided me with breakfast, packed

lunch (for traveling), dinner, and some snacks throughout our stay. When stayed in their home, I

Page 11: nor Katrina anis “ ““ “ Tak kenal maka tak cinta”” ” –” ––– Malay ... · ‘Tak kenal maka tak cinta’ (you will never fall in love with someone until you

was able to speak to my host every day. My host is there to assist in answering any questions I

might have and help me address any concerns that may arise. Homestay lets me enjoyed the

comfort of a normal home. Homestay provides an opportunity for people from different cultures

to live and learn together. My host family learn about Malaysia and its cultures and help me

adjust to living in Canada. One has to adapt, embrace the diversity and enjoy experiences that

are sometimes alien and strange. The experiences I encountered will be ones that I never forget.

In Islamic Institute of Toronto, we attended classes taught by Canadian prominent Islamic

scholars. The richness came from the very knowledgeable facilitators, an atmosphere that

encouraged us to further our learning by being open about ideas and to engage in open

discussion… also, a terrific week in gorgeous locations; definitely will be the most 'memorable'

seminar or class I have been to.

The things to do and see in Canada are as vast as the country itself. For me, the best time to view

the fall foliage will undoubtedly to have my camera ready to see the leaves change into

spectacular reds, oranges and yellows. Canada's skyline glowed like embers when the sun rises

and sets and the surrounding leaves boasted the stunning kaleidoscopic colours. For instance,

my friends and I went to Rideau Hall in Ottawa and took a short stroll along trails in the park; it

appeared to me like some sort of small forest that ablaze with rich colours.

Of course talking about Canada, maple syrup is a wonderful souvenir to bring back for my loved

ones. Especially, syrup in the decorative maple leaf shaped bottle. I absolutely brought home a

bunch, reminiscing having Canadian breakfast every day in Malaysia! As a natural wonder,

Niagara Falls is also one of the places I have been to. One’s destination is never a new place, but

a new way of seeing things. As visitors stand on the either side, in Canada or the United States,

people can see the amazing picture of the falls. For this to be created by man would seem to me

to be impossible. According to the meaning of a Prophetic Tradition, "Be in the world as if you

are a traveller or a Wayfarer...”. All I have seen - teaches me to trust the Creator for all that I have

not seen.

In short, I was overwhelmed by the hospitality shown by all the people I met. I will forever be

grateful for those conversations across the table, across cultural differences, and across

language barriers. Alhamdulillah... I am grateful. I would love to return to Canada, definitely

want to go back to this place and spend more days in this beautiful land.

When I was informed that I was selected to

join the trip to the Canada, I was pretty excited

because I had always wanted to go overseas

especially with IIUM students. But I didn’t

expect to be selected for this trip because of

the expenses to go there was pretty much

expensive. Alhamdulillah, I managed to solve

the financial problem. Besides that, I didn’t

know anybody in the trip even though we are

studying in the same university (only met a

couple of times at the office to settle some

administration matters) so I felt quiet

insecure. However, after the final meeting, I

can feel that this trip was going to be so much

fun and interesting.

Based on my daily observations, I noticed that Canada is a very clean city whereby rubbish is hardly

to be found. It is either the system used to be very good or Canadians just focus on cleanliness in

their daily life. Besides that, what I am so impress with Canadians that when we were crossing the

road, the driver will stop and let us cross the road. It really contrast with the Malaysians where we

as the pedestrians have to use the power of hand to let us crossing the road. Moreover, public

transport in Canada is very convenient and efficient. That is why most of the citizen choose to use

public transport as their main transportation. This is good as it reduces traffic. I also noticed that

the drivers in Canada are being tolerant and patient thus is makes the city looks calm and less busy.

Page 13: nor Katrina anis “ ““ “ Tak kenal maka tak cinta”” ” –” ––– Malay ... · ‘Tak kenal maka tak cinta’ (you will never fall in love with someone until you

I also noticed that the teenagers do not hang around street pointlessly. It is good thing to showing

that they do not waste their time on unnecessary things.

I found that this trip is a good way for the students to increase their knowledge and open up their

mind by learning from other people from different part of the world. Usually, students are busy

with their studies and programmes in university without having time to observe what is happening

around them. So, by having this trip it gives me the chance to explore the world and see the world in

different perspectives and dimensionds. The trip is quiet relax and based on the beautiful places

that we have visited, there are something to be ponder and make us realizes that there is Allah, The

Great Creator behind those great creations. There are lots of things that we can learn from the

nature. Besides, the trip reminds us to always be grateful to Allah.

In addition, Canadians are very punctual. They value their time very much in daily life. They will do

everything on time. Malaysians should apply this in their daily life and stop delaying thing so that

everyone will benefit from it and lead to the success of the nation as a whole. Besides that, I also

found that Canadians even though they live as minority in their country but they have the ability

and capability to make the Islam alive and it makes me feel overwhelmed with the beauty of Islam.

Furthermore, Canadian Muslims underlined the importannce of prayer when the time comes. Thus,

it is clear that it is not an excuse for us to delay the performance of our prayer no matter where we

are.

I also found that Canadians really tolerate and respect others’ beliefs. When we were at the Museum

of Civilization, Ottawa, we wanted to pray, and the stuff permitted us to use the conference room for

us to perform our prayer.

To conclude, Alhamdulillah all praises to Allah for giving me the opportunity to join this trip. It was

such an eye opener for me. I had an amazing experience in Canada, with the beautiful places, great

food and new friends. This trip will definitely be one of the most memorable things in my life. I hope

that such programme will continue in future to give chance to the others to gain the same

experience as I had.

Till then we meet again. InshAllah :)

“ A Moment to Remember”“ A Moment to Remember”“ A Moment to Remember”“ A Moment to Remember”

It was a very beneficial experience for me. Having a great time in Canada for more than one

week really open up my mind about this world. Living with a Canadian family, discussing with

Canadian scholars, enjoying the views and having different types of Canadian meals teach me

how beautiful Allah has created this world.

As a musafir, I’ve been treated like family by the Muslim community in Toronto. They provide

me foods, shelter and transportation even they do not have to do so. The discussions with the

scholars taught me about the challenges of living as minority Muslims in a western country.

Living in the western country requires them to really careful when growing up their children.

My foster mother shared with me how she manages to take care in growing up her children so

that they have a good basic understanding about Islam. Her daughter is the only student in her

school that wear hijab and she is so proud of it. The best part is that all my foster sister’s

classmates respect her and love to be friend with her. Another two sons are very good in

reciting Quran. She mentioned that, the children need to be taught about Islam since they are

Page 15: nor Katrina anis “ ““ “ Tak kenal maka tak cinta”” ” –” ––– Malay ... · ‘Tak kenal maka tak cinta’ (you will never fall in love with someone until you

small. She quit her job just because she want to make sure that her children were well taught

about Islam and got a good care from her. After they all reach puberty, then she decided to

continue her job. This is a very good example for us to follow.

If we see nowadays, a lot of children being affected by western culture because they don’t get

enough guidance from their parents. Therefore, guidance from the beginning of their life is

really important to make sure they can be good Muslims. The journey had really open up my

mind about the value of being a better Muslim.

We also went to many beautiful places such as Parliament House of Canada, Canadian Museum

of Civilisation in Quebec, Rideau Hall, University of Toronto, Chinatown, Toronto’s Downtown

and Niagara Falls (feel like screaming). At Niagara Falls, I could see how beautiful Allah created

the big falls that is flowing without stop (even during winter). To me, the weather was very cold

approximately abpout 8oC – 14 oC. However, I enjoyed the cold weather because I would not get

that in Malaysia. The maples leaves make me feel like screaming as they are so beautiful. Many

leaves were falling and it makes me feel so peace and calm. I really hope that I can be there for

the second time... perhaps bring my wife and kids in the future hehe ☺!

of time around 10 days as compared to the time waiting for several months preparing to go for it.

have met was highly beneficial. The wisdom shared by the shuyookh, meetings with community

leaders from various Canadian muslims organizations, interactions with people around me, staying

with Canadian host family… is an inspirational journey of self-discovery to be a better muslim in the

future, insyallah.

In addition, Islamic values and traditions are embraced and celebrated in Canada. For examples,

providing excellent hospitality to guests, giving away sadaqa jariah, giving salam and greeting each

other. What I am so sure is that almost all Canadians are very hardworking people and very focused

in their job. They work from morning until evening without taking granted for any benefits or

incentives that the government gives to them. They also emphasise punctuality and are committed

to keeping public places clean, tidy and free from litter. Hopefully, we all can emulate their act in

being istiqamah (steadfast) not only in our belief but also in observing our manners.

Morever, Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said: “Wisdom is one’s own property which a believer

appropriates from any source.” Imam Shafie also said travelling is an excellent educational

experience that sharpens the intellect and broaden the mind. The invigorating experience certainly

has enriched me intellectually and spiritually. It has opened my eyes to the world outside my ‘comfy

bubble’. In Canada, I have the first hand experiencing the way the muslims adhere to Islamic

practices and establish Islam in their lands. May Allah reward them immensely for their efforts. I

sincerely wish other muslims would have the chance to visit Canada and muslims in Canada on the

other hand; to visit my beloved country, Malaysia. Thank you to IIT and all people in Canada that

helped us a lot during our stay in Canada. Only Allah can repay for your kindness.

Jazakallahukhairan. Wassalam.

Assalamualaikum wbt.,

Bismillahirahmanirahim.

I make du’a that this letter reaches you while you are in the best of Iman and health by the Grace of

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

Alhamdullillah, through your relentless effort, IIUM managed to send 9 students to experience

precious experiences at your institute. After almost 1 month returned from the visit, they still can’t

stop talking about what they have learnt there in Toronto.

I do hope, this programme will be one of our University’s annual activity on students mobility

programme.

Our utmost gratitude to Islamic Institute of Toronto and the committee for the willingness to

accept our students and share experiences with these young men & ladies.

Please forgive us for any shortcoming and also any glitches made by the students.

Many thanks again and in sha Allah we will see you again next year in Kuala Lumpur.

Wassalam.
