ACTIONJAC™ CYLINDERS
ActionJac™ Electric Cylinders areruggedly designed and producedin standard models with thrustcapacities from 500 lbs. to 40,000lbs. Electric Cylinders are intendedfor use in industrial environmentsand feature ground and hardchrome plated actuator tubes withindustrial enamel paint on exteriorsurfaces. Epoxy paint available onrequest. Electric Cylinders can besupplied for outdoor applications.
These cylinders may be usedindividually or in multiplearrangements. Each ActionJac™Electric Cylinder is built to specification.
DD WORM GEAR ELECTRIC CYLINDERSDD or “Direct Drive” worm geardriven Electric Cylindersincorporate an alloy steel wormwhich drives a high strength bronzeworm gear (drive sleeve). The wormshaft is supported on anti-frictiontapered roller bearings with external
seals provided to prevent loss oflubrication (sealed radial ballbearings on the Series 5 and Series10 units). The drive sleeve issupported on anti-friction taperedroller or ball thrust bearings. Thejack housing is made of ductile ironand proportioned to support therated capacity of the unit.
In operation, the drive sleeverotates the lift shaft causing theactuator tube to extend and retractfrom the housing tube. Actuatortube must be secured to preventrotation.
Motors can be mounted to DDElectric Cylinders by usingavailable standard motor mounts. For use in multiple cylinderarrangements, DD ElectricCylinders can be supplied withoutmotor mounts.
The DD Electric Cylinders areavailable in Acme Screw or BallScrew versions and have a varietyof worm gear ratios resulting in awide range of speeds and thrustcapacities. (SEE FIG. 1)
RAD WORM GEAR ELECTRIC CYLINDERSRAD worm gear driven ElectricCylinders incorporate the featuresof the DD with a second stage ofgear reduction. This secondaryworm gear reduction of the RADElectric Cylinders provides higherthrust at lower speeds. The reducerand motor can be mounted in eightpossible positions for maximum flexibility.
RAD Electric Cylinders are availablein Acme Screw or Ball Screwversions. (SEE FIG. 1)
ILA ELECTRIC CYLINDERThe ILA ActionJac™ In-Line ElectricCylinders are designed to have amotor or gear reducer directlycoupled to the lift shaft. Thisprovides for fast, precise operationand/or higher duty cycles.
ILA Electric Cylinders featurestandard trunnion pin mounting andare easily adapted for use withservo motors and planetary gearreducers. (SEE FIG. 1)

GLOSSARY & TERMS
BACKLASHBacklash (lash) is the relative axialmovement between a screw andnut without rotation of the screw ornut. Backlash in cylinders occurswherever reversible load conditionsexist. Backlash is less than .015" forall but the largest cylinder models.
Ball Screw Cylinders can be factoryadjusted to reduce backlash at thelift shaft by selecting bearing ballsize in the ball nut. This selective fittechnique can be used to achieve a minimal lash between the ball nutand ball screw of .003" to .005".Precision ball screws with preloaded nuts can be suppliedwhen less than .003" backlash is required.
REACTION TORQUEWhen an electric cylinder is used tomove a load, the actuator tube mustbe secured to prevent rotation. Thereaction torque required to preventrotation is a function of the screwlead and the load applied on thecylinder. See product specificationsheets for rod reaction torque.
Prior to installation, the actuatortube can rotate freely in or out ofthe cylinder without movement ofthe input worm. This ability to rotate
aids installation but prevents theoptional rotary limit switch frombeing factory preset for end oftravel positions.
Rod-Type Limit Switches preventtube from freely rotating but are not intended to absorb rod reactiontorque.
TRAVEL LENGTHElectric Cylinders are not pre-assembled or stocked with standard length screws. Eachcylinder is made to order based on travel length.
Cylinders can be built with non-standard lead screws tochange the cylinder operatingspeed or with ground or preloaded screws if required by the application. Contact NookIndustries for availability of special units.

LEAD ACCURACYLead accuracy is the differencebetween the actual distancetraveled versus the theoreticaldistance traveled based on lead. For example: Consider a lift shaftwith a .5" lead and +/- .004"/ footlead accuracy. If the shaft is rotated24 times, the distance the nutmoves is 11.996 to 12.004 inches.
The rolled thread screws, asemployed in ActionJac™ products, are held within +/-.004" per footlead error.
INPUT TORQUEThe input torque is the rotary forcerequired at the input of the cylinderto generate an output force at theactuator tube. The torque necessaryto raise one pound is shown incharts on pages 384-385. Thisnumber multiplied by the load is therequired input torque.
Due to static friction, starting or“breakaway” torque can be asmuch as two to three times runningtorque. If the load is movedhorizontally, the force required tomove the load will be lessened inproportion to the coefficient offriction of the surface along whichthe load is moved. In addition, theforce needed to start, stop and holdthe load (inertia loading) is providedby the cylinder. Cylinder sizingshould consider all these forces.
If an application calls for severalcylinders to be driven together inseries, input torque values shouldbe limited to three times the ratedvalue of the first cylinder. Formultiple high lead (HL, SL) ballscrew cylinders contact NookIndustries for allowable input torquevalues. Multiple cylinders driven ina series may require operation at reduced load.
INPUT SPEEDDD and RAD ActionJac™ ElectricCylinder models are rated at 1725
rpm input. If provided without amotor, cylinders may be operatedup to 3000 rpm providedhorsepower and temperatureratings are not exceeded. ContactNook Industries engineers if higherspeeds are required.
When using variable speed motors, use the Input Turns Per Inch OfTravel information from the ElectricCylinder Design Data table todetermine actual travel speed. Inputspeed (rpm) divided by input turnsper inch of travel produces thetravel speed in inches per minute.NOTE: That maximum horsepowervalues should not be exceeded.
DUTY CYCLEDuty cycle is the ratio of run time to total cycle time. Some of theelectrical energy input to an electriccylinder is converted into heat. Theduty cycle is limited by the ability ofthe electric cylinder to dissipate thisheat. An increase in temperaturecan affect the properties of somecomponents resulting inaccelerated wear, damage andpossible unexpected failure.
Ratings for DD and RAD ElectricCylinders are based on intermittentoperation. The approximateallowable duty cycles for DD andRAD worm gear cylinders are:
Ball Screw versions = 35%
Acme Screw versions = 25%
Housing temperature should bemonitored and kept below 200°Fmaximum. Continuous or heavy-duty operation is possible by de-rating the cylinder capacity, external cooling of the unit orthrough the use of a recirculatinglubrication system.
ILA and ILAK cylinders are directdrives with no internal gears. Dutycycle for these cylinders is afunction of the motor or add-ongear box.
SELF-LOCKING AND BRAKESSelf-locking occurs when systemefficiencies are low enough that theforce on the actuator lifting tubecannot cause the drive system toreverse direction. Actionjac ElectricCylinders that utilize acme screwsand have ratios of 20:1 or greaterare self-locking and, in the absenceof vibration, will hold loads withoutbackdriving. All other modelsrequire a motor brake to prevent backdriving.
Holding torque is the amount ofinput torque required to restrain theload once stopped. The standardbrake torque shown in the productspecification sheets for DD andRAD Cylinders will stop low inertialoads within the stopping distancesshown. Larger brakes may berequired to stop high inertial loadsor stop travel in shorter distances.Contact Nook Industries, forrecommendations.
TEMPERATUREAll Actionjac™ Electric Cylindersare suitable for operation within thespecified limits, provided that thehousing temperature is not lowerthan -20°F or higher than +200°F.Factory supplied grease instandard units will operate in thisrange. For higher or lower operatingtemperature ranges contact NookIndustries, for recommendations.
END-OF-TRAVEL STOPSTravel stops are not standard. Alimit switch and a brake should beused to stop the motor. Mechanicalstops can cause damage to thecylinders because most electricmotors will deliver stall torquesmuch higher than their ratedtorques and motor inertia cancause severe shock loads. Forhand operation, mechanical stopscan be provided.

ELECTRIC CYLINDERS DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
BALL SCREW VS. ACME SCREW CYLINDERThe decision to use a Ball Screw oran Acme Screw Cylinder is basedon the application. For manyapplications, a ball screw model isthe best choice. Ball screwcylinders are more efficient andtherefore require less power than anacme screw cylinder in the sameapplication.
For low duty cycle applications, forhand-operated applications, or ifbackdriving is not acceptableconsider an acme screw cylinder.
Ball Screw Cylinders are preferred for:
• Long, predictable life
• High duty cycles
• Oscillating motion
Acme cylinder is preferred for:
• Resistance to backdriving
• Vibration environments
• High static loads
LOAD CAPACITYAll anticipated loads should bewithin the rated capacity of thecylinder. Loads on the cylinder inmost applications include: staticloads, dynamic or moving loads, cutting forces or other reactionforces and acceleration/deceleration loads.
For shock loads, the peak loadmust not exceed the rated capacityof the cylinder, and an appropriatedesign factor should be appliedcommensurate with the severity ofthe shock.
For accidental overloads notanticipated in the design of thesystem, cylinders can sustainwithout damage the following
overload conditions: 10% fordynamic loads, 30% for static loads.
For multiple cylinder systems, loaddistribution should be considered.System stiffness, center of gravity, drive shaft windup and leadvariation in the lift shafts may resultin unequal load distribution.
HORSEPOWER RATINGSStandard DD and RAD ElectricCylinder Models are supplied withelectric brake-motors sized for theload and speed rating of thecylinder.
The allowable duty cycles for DDand RAD worm gear cylindersbeing used at full rated load are:
Ball Screw Cylinders = 35%
Acme Screw Cylinders = 25%
If an Electric Cylinder is applied atless than rated capacity, higherduty cycles may be possible. Thebest way to determine allowableduty cycle is to measure thecylinder gear housing temperature. The temperature of the housingnear the worm must not exceed200°F.
For Electric Cylinders suppliedwithout brakemotors, use theinformation in the “Electric CylinderDesign Data” chart for motor sizing.
The horsepower is calculated byusing the following formula:
The “Torque to raise one pound”value is particular to each cylinderand can be obtained from the“Electric Cylinder Design Data”chart on pages 384-385.
Maximum horsepower ratings arebased on intermittent operation.
To determine whether performanceis within horsepower and duty cyclelimits, measure the cylindertemperature. The temperature of thehousing near the worm (or at thethrust bearing mounting block forILA cylinders) must not exceed 200°F.
Do not exceed the maximumallowable input horsepower for a cylinder.
COLUMN STRENGTHElectric Cylinder capacity may belimited by its column strength.Column strength is the ability of thecylinder to hold compressive loadswithout buckling. With longer screwlengths, column strength can besubstantially lower than nominalcylinder capacity. When the liftscrew is in tension only, stroke islimited by available screw and/ortube material or by screw criticalspeed. If there is any possibility forthe cylinder to go into compression, the application should be checkedfor sufficient column strength.
The charts on each cylinderspecification page are used todetermine the cylinder size inapplications where the lift screw isloaded in compression.
The charts assume proper cylinderalignment with no bending loadspresent. Effects from side loadingare not included in this chart. Also, cylinders operating horizontally withlong lift screws can have significantbending from the weight of thescrew and tubes. Consult NookIndustries, if side loads areanticipated.

CYLINDER SIZING DATACylinders are limited by twoconstraints: load capacity andhorsepower. The load capacity ofthe cylinder is limited by thephysical constraints of itscomponents (drive sleeve, lift shaft, bearings, etc.). The horsepowerlimit of the cylinder is a result of theability to dissipate the heatgenerated from the inefficiencies ofits components.
In order to test for these constraints, application information must becollected. The data required to sizea cylinder includes:
1) Total Load – The total loadincludes static loads, dynamicloads and inertia loads fromacceleration and deceleration. Alsoconsider reaction forces receivedfrom the load such as drilling orcutting forces when using a cylinderto move a machine tool.
2) Number of Cylinders – The numberof cylinders used depends onphysical size and design of theequipment. Stiffness of theequipment structure and guidesystem will determine theappropriate number of cylindersrequired. Fewer cylinders are easierto drive, align and synchronize. For multiple-cylinder arrangements,do not assume equal loading.Calculations should be based upon“worst case” unequal loading.
3) Travel Rate – Establishing a travel rate allows for a quick cylinder selection and will be used to evaluate critical speed and horsepower limits. The desired rate should include time for acceleration/deceleration.
4) Travel – Travel is the total distance the cylinder extends. This is the number that is used to calculate maximum compressiveload. For cylinders with non-standard retracted lengths include
the additional length in the compressive load evaluation.
5) Duty Cycle – The duty cycle is theratio of run time to the total cycle time.
6) Type of Guidance – Every linearmotion system needs something tomove the load and something toguide the load. The degree ofguidance (stiffness, accuracy, etc.)is based on application requirements.
CYLINDER SELECTIONOnce the cylinder sizing infor-mation is collected, a preliminarycylinder selection can be made and verified.
1) Select a standard cylinder –Use the DD and RAD Model QuickReference Chart page 374 to find a unit which matches the desiredforce and speed. Choose betweena ball screw or acme screw modelbased on duty cycle (model suffixes which begin with “A” are acme models).
2) Travel Length – When a unit ischosen, go to the productspecification page for that model.Check that the desired travel lengthdoes not exceed column strengthand maximum travel limits. A largercapacity cylinder may be requiredin order to stay within these limits.
3) Reference Number – Use theinformation on page 389 to specifya complete Electric CylinderReference Number.
If the cylinder is to be used with amotor other than those listed in thecatalog, if multiple cylinders areused or if the cylinder is manuallyoperated, go to the ElectricCylinder Design Data on pages 384-385.
1) Select a cylinder – Choose amodel whose basic capacitymatches or exceeds the expected
load. Make certain the dynamic andstatic loads do not exceed thecylinder capacity. In multiplecylinder applications, check thedistribution of the load for potentialuneven loading on the cylinders.
2) Speed – Use the “turns for oneinch of travel” from the chart todetermine the input speed required. If travel rate and motor speed areknown, divide the motor speed(rpm) by the travel rate (inches perminute) to determine the “turns forone inch of travel.”
3) Motor Horsepower – Calculate the horsepower required from theload, speed and “torque to raiseone pound value” from the chart.Use the horsepower calculation onpage 369.
If using the cylinders in multiplecylinder systems, check the totalhorsepower. Remember thatadditional gearboxes and couplingsused to distribute power to thecylinders are not 100% efficient.
If the horsepower required exceedsthe maximum value for the cylinderselected, several solutions are possible.
• Use a larger cylinder model toincrease the maximum allowable horsepower
• Use a Ball Screw Cylinder to reduce the power required to do the same work
• Operate at a lower input speed
• Use a RAD cylinder to bring the power requirement within acceptable limits
Upon selecting a motor and brake, verify that the brake has sufficienttorque to both hold the load andstop the load.
CAUTION: Cylinders with high leadball screws (HL and SL) may

require larger brakes to stop theload. An appropriately sized brakewill insure against excessive “drift”.
4) Column Strength – If it is possiblefor the cylinder to be loaded incompression, check for columnstrength. Consider cases where aunit normally loaded in tension canbe compressively loaded if it runsinto an obstruction. Also checkhorizontal applications forcompressive loading due toacceleration or deceleration.
5) Cycle Time – If using a worm gearstyle Electric Cylinder, make surecycle time does not exceed theallowable duty cycles.
6) Life – For Ball Screw Cylinders, check life expectancy against thelife charts.
7) Reference Number – Use theinformation on page 389 to specifya complete Electric CylinderReference Number.
INSTALLATIONThe alignment of the cylindersdirectly affects their service life.Cylinders must be properly alignedin all planes so the actuator tubecan move in and out withoutevidence of binding.
Since the majority of cylinderapplications use the cylinders withclevis or trunnion mounts, simplyalign the clevises and install the cylinder.
Set limit switches before operating.Allow for drift when setting theposition. The actuator tube canmove (rotate) until the unit isinstalled. Turn the actuator tube inor out to get the cylinder to a knownposition before installation toprevent over-travel.
MAINTENANCEActionJac™ Electric Cylindersrequire minimum maintenance. Inaddition to maintaining lubrication
levels in the gearbox and tubes, thefollowing items should be checked:
• The actuator tube should be kept free of dirt. If possible, the actuator should be returned to the retracted position when not in use.
• For acme cylinders, lash betweenthe lift shaft and travel nut greaterthan 1/4 the screw pitch indicatesthe need for replacement of the cylinder lift shaft components. Refer to the acme section for the specifications on the nut used.
• For machine screw or ball screw worm gear Electric Cylinders, check for excessive backlash between the worm and worm gear. Lash in excess of 30° for ratios 5:1 to 8:1 and 60° for ratios 20:1 and 24:1 indicates the need to replace the worm and worm gear.
LUBRICATIONActionjac™ Electric Cylindersrequire lubrication to operateefficiently and with maximum life.Standard lubrication is NLGI #1grease. If operating conditionsexceed -20° F to 200° F, contactNook Industries, for alternativelubricants.
The cylinder gear boxes areshipped pre-greased unlessotherwise specified. Beforeoperating any unit, check thelubricant level. All cylinder housingsare furnished with a grease fitting. Most have a pipe plug opposite thegrease fitting. When adding greaseto the housing, remove the pipeplug and fill the unit until greaseexits the pipe plug opening.Overfilling the cylinder may result ingrease leakage from the seals.
In normal operation, cylinderlubricant levels should be checkedonce per month. Applicationconditions may dictate a more or
less frequent lubrication cycle. In extreme conditions, automaticlubrication may be desired.
Lubricants containing additivessuch as molydisulfide or graphiteshould not be used.
The lift shafts (ball and acmescrews) inside the Electric Cylinderactuator tube receive lubricationthrough the fittings on the outside of the housing tube. Lubricationadded to the housing tube canpass to the screw regardless ofactuator tube position, but there is a guide at the bottom outside of theactuator tube which runs along theinside of the housing tube. The best way to lubricate this section of the cylinder is to add somelubricant when the cylinder is fully retracted and additionallubricant when the cylinder isextended beyond where the guideis past the lube port (see cylindercutaway view on page 367).

Application #1 – HVAC DUCT VALVE
An HVAC 6' x 6' duct valve is located 30 feet above amanufacturing process facility floor. The baffle needs to be adjusted periodically to maintain proper airflowthrough the building. The loads, duty cycle and otheroperation details have been identified. The concern is with the amount of dust and particulate that will accumulate on the actuator due to the fact that it islocated directly above foam manufacturing equipment.
SPECIFICATIONS:
• Maximum force to open and close the valve
under maximum airflow is 2,000 lbs.
• Cylinder will be in compression
• Maximum speed is 32 inches per minute
• Actuation cycle: 2 times per day; 365 days per year
• Desired design life is twenty years
• Mechanism must be mounted overhead
• Limit Switches needed
• Maximum stroke is 18 inches
ANALYSIS:
There is a specific life requirement so a ball screwactuator is needed. As shown on the Series DD-25product reference page 366, using the DD-2512-HDwith a 1/2 hp brake motor will provide a travel rate of36"/min and give 4.1 million inches of life at 2000lbs.Additionally, the charts show that this application iswithin the column load strength of the DD-2512-HD. The door swings through an arc so a double clevis stylewill be needed. Due to the environment concerns anenclosed Rotary Limit Switch should be used instead ofa Rod type Limit Switch.
SELECTION:
DD-2512-HD / 05BT –1 / 2CA – 4E / CC / 18 / S
Application #2 – DISTRIBUTION CONVEYOR
A warehouse conveyor system distributes filler materialacross a 48 inch wide packaging line. One end of theconveyor is hinged to a loading station, the other endmust move across the conveyor.
SPECIFICATIONS:
• The maximum load from the conveyor with material
is 1,100 pounds
• A servo drive will be used to control the actuator
• The conveyor will move 480 times an hour, 16 hours
a day, 350 days per year
• Life expectancy is 5 years
• Stroke length is 24 inches maximum
• Minimum Travel Rate is 24 inches in 3 seconds
ANALYSIS:
An In-Line cylinder will be used because of the frequentcycle requirement. With a travel rate of 480 inches permin ((24 inches / 3 seconds) * 60 seconds) and a lifeexpectancy of 15 million inches, an ILA-10-HL isselected. The application would require a servomotorthat can produce 96.8 inch-lbs of torque (0.088 inch-lbs* 1,100 lbs) at 960 rpm (480 inches per min / .500 Lead).

HOW TO ORDER AN IN-LINE ENCODER:
For position sensing at the input shaft, the ActionJac™ in-lineencoder option may be factory installed between the motor andmotor adapter or Right-Angle Reducer. This low-cost optionrequires minimal space. When used with worm gear type cylinders, it leaves the extension shaft side of the cylinder free for clearance, for a rotary limit switch, or for coupling toanother cylinder .
The In-line encoder’s quadrature output design allows detection of both speed and direction of shaft rotation.
The ActionJac™ in-line encoder option mounts to a motor andtherefore requires an optional motor mount or right-angle reducer.
Sensing speed range: 0 -10,000 rpmPulse Output: 60 pulses/revolutionSupply voltage: +12 Volts DC +/-5%Supply current: 60 mA typical, 115 mA maximumOutput drive capability: 250 mA per channel continuousMaximum load: 50 ohms per channel
Encoder is face mounted between the motor and motor mountand will offset the length of the motor .61 inches for NEMA 56 and140 frames and .88 inches for NEMA 180 and 210 frames.

Examples of rotary limit switch designations:2CA-4 = Rotary Limit Switch, 2-circuit, SPDT, position 44CE-1 = Rotary Limit Switch, 4-circuit, DPDT, position 1PTA-8 = Rotary Limit Switch with potentiometer, 2 SPDT’s, position 8
“dash” number designates mounting position (see following page)
IMPORTANT: These designation numbers are not complete part numbers. These assemblies contain gearreducers with ratios that vary according to the model and travel of the cylinder. If you are ordering a replacementswitch assembly, complete information on the cylinder is required.
Every motorized Electric Cylindermust be controlled so that power to the motor is turned off and thebrake engaged before the limits of mechanical travel are reached.
The ActionJac™ rotary limit switchsenses extension shaft rotation andprovides switch contact closuresthat can be used to control motors.
This sturdy, durable assembly isavailable with two or four circuits or two circuits and a potentiometer. Each circuit has a separate rotatingcam that actuates a high qualityswitch. The switch actuation may be individually and infinitely adjusted anywhere within the travelof the cylinder.
These assemblies contain gearreducers with ratios that varyaccording to the model and travel of the jack. Nook selects ratios thatresult in maximum cam rotation for best accuracy, repeatability andminimum hysteresis. In most cases, with full travel of the actuator, thecam will rotate 3/8 to 7/8 of arevolution to actuate a switch. In the event that the cam continues to rotate, the switch returns to itsoriginal state after approximately
25° of rotation, withno damage to thelimit switchassembly.
A 2-circuit switchassembly is usefulfor limiting themaximum andminimum extension.A 4-circuit assemblygives the possibilityof additional signalsfor other userpurposes. Thepotentiometer version is used toprovide an analog signal for sensing cylinder position.
Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT)switches are standard and DoublePole Double Throw (DPDT) switchesare optional. These assemblies aredust protected and meet NEMA 4and 5 standards for oil and water tightness.
An ActionJac™ Rotary Limit Switchassembly is mounted to theextension shaft side of theActionJac™ Worm Gear ScrewCylinder opposite the motor.
A rotary limit switch is available forActionJac™ Electric Cylinder SeriesDD-25 and RAD-25 and larger. Most cylinder models have closeand extended mounts for theswitches to provide clearancearound the switch housing. See thecharts below for dimensions.
Switches are factory installed toassure proper assembly in thecorrect orientation for the specifiedmounting position. CAUTION: Limitswitches are not adjusted at the factory. Switches should be set after installation.

ROD-TYPE LIMIT SWITCH ASSEMBLIES
HOW TO ORDER A ROD-TYPE LIMIT SWITCH:
The Rod-Type Limit Switch provides two SPDTswitches used to limit the maximum and minimumcylinder extension. The switch assembly mounts tothe cylinder tubes for convenient access and leavesthe extension shaft free for other purposes. Thesimple design permits easy installation andmaintenance. Independent adjustment allows forquick and easy fine tuning of the travel limits.
Every ActionJac™ Electric Cylinder should beinstalled so that electrical power to the motor isturned off and the brake engaged before the travellimits are reached, or damage to the cylinder can result.
Minimum travel is 6" and maximum travel is 72" forall ACTIONJAC™ ELECTRIC CYLINDERS equippedwith rod-type limit switches.
Specify the Electric Cylinder reference number, using the system described on page 389.
