Title: Intro Noodle Tools Subject/Course: English Language Arts

Topic: Noodle Tools, Note taking Grade: 5th-6th Designer: Emily Johnson

Stage 1 – Desired ResultsEstablished Goals:Students will be able to demonstrate the use of Noodle Tools to create online notecards and bibliographies.Students will be able to locate and demonstrate the use of a curated list of resourcesStudents will use an online encyclopedia (World Book) to find pertinent information about their topic (Yellowstone National Park)Students will be able to briefly describe the need for a bibliography and how to use a digital notecard

Understandings:Students will understand that…Bibliographies are used to give credit where credit is due, as well as to help the writer keep track of their resources, and a way to assist readers in finding more information. They will also understand that online note-taking and citation tools are a helpful tool to help them keep track of the information gathered.

Essential Questions:

How are online note-taking and citation tools, such as Noodle Tools, helpful when we are doing a research paper? What is a bibliography and why is it important to include a bibliography when we are writing a research paper?

Students will know….

That part of the research process includes taking notes to keep track of our information gathered and including a bibliography so that we can correctly identify where the information came from.

Students will be able to….

Create a new project in Noodle ToolsCreate an online notecardCreate a new bibliographyCreate a new citationFind and use a curated list of resources Cite one resource they used in their bibliography.

Stage 2 – Assessment EvidencePerformance Task: Goal(s):This is the first lesson in a month-long research report project. Students select one National Park (the entire class selected Yellowstone National Park), to research and report on. Role:Students must identify an important or interesting aspect of National park management or a specific problem that Yellowstone national park is facing.Audience:The teacher and the other studentsSituation:The students will be working individually, but will collaborate as a group (they have all selected the same topic)Performance:The student will use their netbook to access and use the digital tools they need to complete this project. The students will work collaboratively with the class to understand the task set before them.Standards:The student will use Noodle Tools to create a project (which will be used during the course of the project), a bibliography with at least one citation, and one digital notecard.Key Criteria: Students will use Noodle Tools to create a new project. Within the new project, they will create one virtual notecard, as well as creating a bibliography with at least one citation. Students will also reflect on why having a bibliography is important, and will be able to explain their reasoning.

Other EvidenceThe final evaluation of this will come when the research paper is completed and the students have a properly cited research paper.

Stage 3 – Learning PlanLearning Activities

Discuss with students the assignment before them. o They have already selected a discussion about Yellowstone, but how many really know what a

national park is? o How many students have been to a national park?o Ask the students where Yellowstone national park is and why it was created.o Suggest that we can go online to find this information. In fact, we have a curated list of resources

where we can find this information. At this point, the teacher will write the process followed on the board. See “Resources” section for a list of the process we are following (this is just a suggested list, the actual list should use student wording, for better understanding)

Write the national park on the board, to remind students of what we are looking for.o Using the projector and computer, show students how to access the curated list of resources.o Use World Book (or another online encyclopedia) to find the answer we are looking for. o Discuss with students what they think we should do with this information (we want to illicit the

response that we need to write it down and keep track of it) Discuss with students that we have online tools that help us keep notes and keep track of the resources we

use. o Why should we keep track of our resources?o Why should we take notes?

Log in to Noodle Toolso Create a new project titled “Yellowstone Research Report”o Within the project, create a digital notecard.o Return to the World Book entry, when was Yellowstone founded?o Summarize the answer within the note card.o Discuss with students what we should do now (hoping to illicit the response of citation!)o Create a bibliographic entry and cite the resource.

Discuss with students the process that we just went through.o Why do we need to cite our resources?o Where is the information coming from?o Why do we use a list of curated resourceso Discuss with students a question that they have about Yellowstone National Park

Have students open their netbooks and access the Internet.o Students will follow the same process that we just went through to find a resource that can answer

their question.o Students should work independently or in pairs (according to their needs) and find a resource to

answer their question.o Once they have found the answer, we will move (as a class), to the Noodle Tools process.

Have students create a project within Noodle Toolso Create a digital notecard that summarizes the answer they just found.o Create a bibliography that cites the resource they used.

Reflectiono Students report back on the answers they found and the resources they used.
