SPECIAL INTEREST

Genealogy Club Interviewing: Before It’s Too Late is the topic for our monthly genealogy club meeting Tuesday, June 18, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the Senior Center. As children, we don’t often get to know our older relatives. But they provide a key view of those who have gone before. They can provide first-hand information about our ancestors, having

lived through the times they did and often with the ances-tor. But we need to make an effort to inter-view our rela-

tives before it’s too late. Ed Lucky, director of the Sacramento Family History Center, will guide us through the preparation and interview process. Ed and his wife Linda Lucky have been di-rectors in Sacramento for several years. He has traced his family back nine generations and taken “cemetery” trips to England, Scotland, the Louisi-ana swamps, Utah and Idaho. He’s a retired senior executive and golf professional and has done fami-ly history for nearly 30 years. Our genealogy library remains open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers are available during these hours to help with questions. To learn more about the Davis Genealogy Club and Library, visit our website at www.davisgenealogy.org or call Lisa Henderson at 530-753-8943.

Senior Commission Meets Offsite The City of Davis Senior Citizen Commission will meet at Olympic Cottages Thursday, June 13, at 2:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend these monthly meetings and voice their concerns and/or suggestions relating to matters affecting Davis seniors. Call 530-757-5696 for details.

Current Events Discussion Group Everyone is welcome to join the discussion in this lively, yet civil group. Historical and timely events of interest are featured. The discussion group will meet on Fridays, June 7 & 21, at 2:00 p.m.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

Hem & Haw

Hem & Haw meets on Wednesdays, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Anyone who loves to knit, crochet or stitch is welcome to join our friendly group.

Watercolor Painting With June comes the concluding month of watercolor instruction for this cycle. Chris Shackle will, as usual, bring her radiant smile and mischie-vous challenges to the Friday morning painting ses-sions. We set up in the Valente Room by 9:20 a.m. on Fridays with instruction beginning at 9:30. Class ends about 11:00 a.m. During July and August, we have open stu-dio painting without formal leadership. (Remember to enter the Yolo County Fair.) In September we will start classes again. This year we will be introducing Lucy Sargeant in the role of instructor. Kris Bell will do another por-trait class in October.

Project Linus of Yolo County

Happiness is a warm blanket made with love! Come to our gathering on Wednesday, June 12, 1:30-3:30. You will be welcomed if you enjoy quilting, knitting or sewing. Volunteers in our group

create and provide blankets for children in our community who are seriously ill, traumatized, or in need of love and a feeling of secu-rity. We also share ideas, patterns and lots of good conversation.

For more information, please contact Diane McGee at [email protected] or 530-753-3436.

Open Art Studio

The center’s Valente Room is open to all art enthusiasts, including painters and basket weavers on Monday mornings beginning at 9:00 a.m. If you’d like to learn pine needle basket making, con-tact Alisa Fisher at 530-757-5696, and she can tell you what you need to get started.

Hot Cat! - How to Make Art by Heat

Embossing Local Davis artist Lois Richter will hold a free work-shop on heat embossing - a technique that melts special powders to create a raised sur-

face on paper or canvas. Response to her 2009 class, “Heat Emboss a Volcano - How to Melt Your Way to Art”, was enthusiastic and she has agreed to do a sim-ilar class with cats as the subject. Space is limited, so registration is required by calling 530-757-5696. Beginners are welcome. Materi-als will be provided; but if you don't want to draw a cat in class, bring a favorite drawing to trace (no big-ger than 8x10, to fit nicely on a 9x12 paper). Meet at the center Wednesday, June 12 at 10:00 a.m. For more information, call Lois at 530-758-5058.

Display Cabinet

This month’s display cabi-net by Susan Steinbach is a cultural display of some of the schools, projects, and tourist sites in Myan-mar (also known as Burma). Calling all cat lovers! Our display in July will feature cat artwork. Do you have some cat artwork you’d like to display? Call Alisa 530-757-5696 to arrange a time to drop off your piece.

She is one of the leaders of the Slow Food Yolo Convivium, and regularly writes about food and agricultural. Please sign up at the front desk for this presentation by calling 530-757-5696.

We’re Under Construction As we go to press, we are working with city facilities staff and building contractors about making repairs to the women’s restroom at the east end of the Senior Center and to the exterior

of the building near the 7th Street entrance. We do not yet have a schedule for the repairs, but we are committed to minimizing any impact on participants and programs at the center. Whenever

possible, construction work will be scheduled during non-program hours. The large women’s restroom at the east end of the center has been closed until further notice for repairs. As a result, we expect heavy use of the smaller women’s restroom near the A Street entrance. Thanks for your understanding as we complete these repairs.
