Piano Spheres at Zipper HallOver the course of its twenty-year history, Piano Spheres, renowned for the performance of contemporary works for piano, has presented 80 premieres – including 54 world premieres, 628 works by 206 composers, and has commissioned 20 piano works through the Leonard Stein Memorial Fund. Piano Spheres’ outstanding artists begin our third decade on October 28 with Vicki Ray and her love letter to CalArts, Exquisite Corps(e). Mark Robson, Susan Svrcek, and Gloria Cheng follow with performances throughout the season at Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School of Music. Piano Spheres has hosted such celebrated guest artists as Thomas Adés, Christopher O’Riley, Kathleen Supové, Ursula Oppens, Joanne Pearce Martin, Eric Huebner, and Liam Viney. This year, four young pianists who have splashed their way across the LA new music scene will be our guest artists in their own PS Satellite Series (see next page). If you haven’t joined us before, plan to this season, and discover the many spheres of piano music!

Piano Spheres at REDCAT(Satellite Series)Piano Spheres is pleased to announce a unique addition to the season. The Satellite Series, co-presented by REDCAT, presents performances by four emerging Los Angeles pianists. This ear-opening set of recitals features pianists Richard Valitutto, Nic Gerpe,

Steven Vanhauwaert, and Aron Kallay, and is made possible through an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Mentored by the four founding Piano Spheres artists, the Satellite artists express their own time and place, each program including a world premiere commissioned by Piano Spheres. Leonard Stein’s original mission was to showcase pianists from Los Angeles …we want

to pass on the legacy to the next generation.

21st Season Satellite Series Guest Artists And, thanks.

Nic Gerpe, a Los Angeles native, has been hailed as “dashing” (Christian Herzog, sandiego.com) and “appropriately spacey and far-out” (Matthew Guerrieri). A dedicated proponent of new music, Nic has worked with composers including Steve Reich, Gernot Wolfgang, Michael Gordon and Don Crockett, recorded for Erica Muhl and given numerous premieres in the United States and abroad. As a concerto soloist, Nic’s most recent performances have included composer Thomas Demenga’s Relations, a double concerto for two cellos,

percussion and prepared piano, premiered at the 2012 Piatigorsky International CelloFest, and composer Dale Trumbore’s piano concerto with the USC Thornton Symphony. Nic has performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall as part of the Green Umbrella Series, played for Microfest, L.A.’s festival dedicated to microtonal music, and performed with the LA-based ensembleGREEN and Midnight Winds.

Aron Kallay’s playing has been called “exquisite…every sound sounded considered, alive, worthy of our wonder” (LA Times) and “explosive and awe-inspiring” (UnTwelve). Aron is an award-winning solo and chamber musician who has performed throughout the United States and abroad. As a champion of contemporary composers, microtonal music, and music that combines electronics with acoustic instruments, he is dedicated to expanding the repertoire by commissioning new works that challenge the idea of what it means to be

a pianist in the 21st century. Aron is also the co-director and co-founder of People Inside Electronics (PiE), a concert series that features new and classic electro-acoustic music, and the managing-director of MicroFest. He is on the faculty of the USC, Chapman University, and Pomona College where he teaches piano, electro-acoustic media, and music technology.

Richard Valitutto, described by the Los Angeles Times as a “vivid soloist” and “vigorously virtuosic,” is active in Los Angeles as a piano soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, teacher, composer/arranger, and music writer. A strong proponent of new music, he has worked with composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Steve Reich, Chinary Ung, Clarence Barlow, and Marc Sabat. His recorded playing was recently featured on the Grammy-nomi-nated Harry Partch: Bitter Music, a Bridge Records release. Richard is a founding member

of two chamber ensembles, gnarwhallaby and The Joshua Trio, in addition to his continuous work with the critically-acclaimed wild Up Modern Music Collective. He holds degrees from CalArts (MFA) and University of Cincinnati (BM).

Steven Vanhauwaert has received many awards including Grand Prize at the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, which enabled him to tour through the US and Hungary. Mr. Vanhauwaert has appeared with orchestras such as the Pacific Symphony, the Flemish Symphony, the Oak Ridge Symphony, the USC Symphony, Collegium Instrumentale, and the Concord Jazz Ensemble. An avid champion of lesser-known repertoire, Mr. Vanhauwaert has given local or US premieres of Messiaen’s

Fantaisie for violin and piano, Tanguy’s Piano Trio, and Swarwenka’s Piano Quintet, among others. He performs frequently through Europe, Asia and the US, as a recitalist and in chamber music ensembles.

Piano Spheres’ programs are made possible in part by a grant from the City ofLos Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs and by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Programs are also made possible, in part, by grants from the Colburn Foundation; Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation; New Music USA; The Aaron Copland Fund for Music and the National Endowment for the Arts. The NEA’s Art Works grant supports the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence: public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancing the livability of communities through the arts. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is an independent federal agency that funds and promotes artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities. Piano Spheres is a nonprofit organization. Donations are tax-deductible. Your contribution will ensure the continuation of this unique series of performances and aid in the commissioning of new works for the piano. For further information regarding tax-deductible contributions to either the Performance or Commission Funds, contact Piano Spheres at 323-935-0729 or visit pianospheres.org.

Piano Spheres is grateful to Sylvi Brown of SCBrown PR Consulting, Carol Newsom of Newsom Design, our grant writer Mark Stambler, Mary Hannon for concert programs, Mark Murphy and Edgar Miramontes of REDCAT, our volunteers, and the Piano Spheres Board of Directors. Thank you all.
