NONCOLORED FILLING MATERIALS

Non colored (tooth colored) restoration material have been used to replace missing tooth structure and to modify tooth of decayed of previously filled tooth color and thus enhancing tooth facial esthetic

Patients use white fillings because they want their teeth to look natural when they laugh, talk and smile.

Silicate Based Filling Material

Silicates were the earliest of the direct tooth colored filling materials. It was used extensively to replace carious teeth for the anterior

region It has a good appearance ,and available in a variety of tooth-like

shade that help in close matching with surrounding tooth substance

Composition

It was supplied as powder and liquid system

Powder: Sodium alumino - silicate glass with 20% calcium fluoride.Liquid: 50% phosphoric acid, H20, Buffering agent

Properties 1-The setting reaction is rather slow and protracted

2-During the early stages of setting the material is very sensitive to moisture

3-Silicates are good thermal insulators and expand and contract at about the same rate as tooth substance

4-Silicates are very brittle materials

5-The silicates show no adhesion to tooth substance

Advantage1-Anticariogenic: fluoride release lead to less chance for

caries development

3-Coefficient of thermal expansion near to that of tooth structure

Disadvantages1 -Pulpal irritation due to low pH (5-3.5).

2 -Brittle and has weak mechanical properties.3 -Shrinkage on setting.

4 -Discoloration.5 -High solubility and disintegration.

Acrylic Resin The self cure acrylic resin for anterior restoration was developed to over come the problems associated with silicate cement

Composition : 1 -Powder: polymer ( poly methylmethacrylate beads )

2 -liquid :Monomer (methyl methacrylate)

Advantage1 -Less soluble than silicate over a wide range of pH.

2 -Less irritant to the dental pulp than silicate but it has residual methyl methacrylate which is irritant to the pulp.

3 -Less brittle than silicate.4 -Has the ability to match the color of the tooth.

5 -Some products which contain fluoride (anticariogenic)

Disadvantages

1-Temperature rise during setting caused by highly exothermic

polymerization reaction necessitate the use of protective cavity base material

which is calcium hydroxide.Products containing Eugenol should be avoided.

2 -Undergo a considerable setting contraction which the fluids can penetrate

Composite Fillings Composte filling (white filling) are the most common type of

fillings and very popular because of tooth colored appearance that can be matched to the shade of existing teeth

They are esthetically add superior to amalgam filling

Composition A composite filling is made of dimethacrylates

and assorted filler-particles such as fine-grained

glass, ceramic, quartz powder and silicate.

5 -Have no good bonding with tooth substance (chemical and mechanical means of retention)

6. -Composite fillings carry a risk of causing pain and/or heat sensitivity after fitting. These

are common problems which usually subside with time, and can only be avoided by

having a cavity liner put in place before the composite filling is inserted

Advantages of adding fillers

1 -Polymerization shrinkage is reduced, as compared with unfilled due to less

resin is present in a composite. Although shrinkage is varies from one product

to another.2 -Water sorption and CTE are significantly reduced.

3 -Mechanical properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength,abrasive resistance and modulus of elasticity are improved.

4 -Optical properties (color match ) are improved

Chemical cured:

also called self cured or two component system .

These resins are supplied as two pastes system with one paste containing tertiary amines as activator and other containing benzyl peroxidase as initiator .

When the two systems are mixed together the polymerization is initiated .

A-ultra violet light cure :

An alternative way to chemical cured was introduced that use the ultraviolet light to initiate

polymerization .

advantages : 1- it can run or rechargeable battery power 2-bulb life of the light is at least 10 times longer

than that of visible light 3-produce less heat as compared to that of visible

Type I: Macro filled composite resin

This type is also known as conventional or traditional. Because of the relatively large particle size

this group exhibits a pattern of unacceptable wear both of itself and of the opposing tooth

Type II: Micro filled composite resin:

The fillers in this material are amorphous silica particles of 0.04mm average diameter. With such small filler particles

they are translucent and highly aesthetic but high filler loading is difficult to achieve.

The wear resistance is low and they cannot sustain a high filler loading.

Type III: Hybrid composite resin:

These are also known as small particle composites. They contain a combination of macrofiller paricles with a proportion of microfiller particles

are probably the most common used composite resins. The main variation is in the proportion and distribution of the various particle sizes because this will control the ability to fill the resin and increase the percentage loading.
