f Community/global impact f Innovation f Personal integrity/influence

Definition of an entrepreneurEntrepreneurs include both founders of companies and those who organize, manage, and assume the “educated” risks of a business or enterprise in the companies’ life or development and are active in the leadership of the company. Traditionally, the entrepreneur is the CEO/original founder of an organization.

Entrepreneurs can also be those CEOs who come on board to join an existing business and create institutional change. In doing so, these CEO/entrepreneurs assume a different kind of risk, but a risk nonetheless. In select cases, the CEO/President of a subsidiary may also qualify as an entrepreneur. There are many situations, such as an acquired business, where the subsidiary or divisional CEO/President has a separate P&L and substantial vision and authority over strategy and execution of the grand plan for that business and, as a result, can be considered an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs can also be multi‑generational (i.e. business passed from generation to generation). The new leadership should exhibit their own form of risk and also “make their mark” on the family business.

Whether the original founder or a non-founding CEO/entrepreneur, these individuals find creative, venturesome ways to acquire the capital resources, build their team and innovate to achieve their goals and to build and grow their business. They create value for themselves, their employees, their customers and their communities.

Why should I participate? You will receive many benefits from participating in the program, including favorable publicity, networking opportunities and increased corporate visibility. As the CEO, you represent the company and can accept this recognition on behalf of all the employees who contribute in strategic, innovative and entrepreneurial ways. Participating in this program is a great way to recognize your mentors and your employees for their efforts in helping you create a successful business.

I am the leader of a large, established public company. I don’t consider myself a classic entrepreneur. The Entrepreneur Of The Year Program recognizes the entrepreneurial vision of leaders who lead high‑growth, successful companies of all sizes. Leaders of public and private companies qualify for consideration. Directing a high‑growth organization on a consistent basis requires innovation, strategic direction and entrepreneurial spirit. Entrepreneur Of The Year judges understand and recognize the challenges and contributions of an entrepreneurial leader who maintains growth and innovation in a large, public organization.

My company is privately held. Is it necessary to report my company’s financial information? The Entrepreneur Of The Year Program is designed to honor business success. Therefore, measurable criteria are used to demonstrate quantitative success. The limited financial information requested on the application form is confidential and the judging process is objective. Financial information will be used to compute growth ratios, returns on investment and other measures. Each portion of the application form must be completed entirely to be considered in the program.

Will my company’s financial information be kept confidential?Yes! EY is the undisputed leader in guiding Russell 2000® companies and Forbes’ large private enterprises, so confidentiality is our business. We protect all private information required on the Entrepreneur Of The Year application form with a high level of confidentiality. Your private company information is viewed only by the EY principals involved in the program and members of our independent panel of judges. The independent judges sign confidentiality agreements prior to receiving this information.

Page 7: Nominee guide 2017 - EY€¦ · Nominee guide 2017 Greater Los Angeles. Program ... Jayshree Ullal, Arista Networks 2014 David Hung, MD, Medivation 2013 Hamid Moghadam, Prologis 2012

My company has been in business for more than 20 years and I am not the original founder. Do I qualify as an entrepreneur?Entrepreneurs include both founders and those who manage and assume the risks of an organization. The intent of this program is to honor the creativity, drive and success of strategic leaders. If you are not the original founder, the judges will evaluate your leadership since joining the company.

More than one entrepreneur built the business — is that an issue? Most often, the award recognizes one individual. However, the nomination can be for more than one individual. Information for all nominees must be included in the nomination application.

What is the time commitment to complete an application? The application process is simple and requires a minimal investment of your time. Your marketing team can complete the majority of the application. Your input is important to address your leadership and the innovation and growth path of your company. However, the four‑part essay should be concise and no longer than two pages. If you are selected as a finalist, it can mean significant returns for you and your company for a minimal time investment.

What are the judges looking for?Entrepreneurs who drive high growth and innovation in their industries impress the judges. Although the judges review financial results, they do not focus their discussion on any one measure of financial performance. The judges are also interested in the leadership and management of the organization, the degree of difficulty and originality that are required to grow the company within the industry, the people philosophy of the organization and the corporate and personal philanthropic involvement.

What if I believe this is not the best year to apply? The judges look at the overall performance of the company and understand a specific, current‑year issue. However, it is important that you are comfortable submitting an application. If you do not feel this is the year to apply, you are welcome to participate in the future.

What if I don’t win?The judges are independent and the results are not predictable. Each year is different, with a different set of candidates. Focus on the benefits of participating in the program. It can take two to three years to win, but having the judges see the strength of your company from year‑to‑year is an asset.

Can I nominate myself?Self‑nominations are accepted — and encouraged. No one knows your business narrative better than you. Your business associates, such as your banker or lawyer, your public relations firm, your advertising agency or your marketing director, may also nominate you.

How do I submit an application?Visit the Greater Los Angeles website www.ey.com/us/eoy/greaterla and click on the link to nominate an entrepreneur or submit an application.

Is there a fee to nominate someone or submit an application? No fee is charged.
