10 years on the central region board, 6 years on the national board. 12 years as unit president. 13 years on the Picton emergency operations trust as a trustee. I have been involved in two significant fundraising projects to fund & construct a new rescue centre for St John & Coastguard & to fund and construct a purpose‐built high speed marine ambulance for the Marlborough community.

Tell us a little about your professional career and background.

Commercial master since 1996, I have operated my own maritime water taxi operation in Queen Charlotte sound and operated as fleet Master for a variety of vessel operations. 17 years employed by NZ Police including 8 years on the Diplomatic Protection Squad. I have a sound knowledge of the maritime industry & the complexities of operating commercial vessels & the emergency services environment.

Why do you want to be a member of the Coastguard New Zealand Board?

I have come from the grass roots level of Coastguard as a crew & vessel Master & progressed through to the regional & national board and feel I have a good understanding of all levels of the organization. I am passionate about Coastguard NZ & feel I have much more to contribute. I look forward to seeing us move forward as a united organization. As we look forward to a new future, I believe we should also draw on the positive aspects of past experience & learning. Project Horizon has been a positive step forward for Coastguard and is the beginning of a new future. I would like to see our training process streamlined & a pathway provided for those with commercial qualifications to have them recognized within our organization. I would like to help those who volunteer their time to Coastguard progress in a timely manner to the level they wish to achieve.

I am a motivated self starter. I am now a widower & live on my yacht in the Picton marina. I have a strong connection with my local community & obtain great satisfaction from helping those in need. I have plenty of free time & enjoy sailing and passing my knowledge on to the next generation of Mariners.

Co‐Founder of one of New Zealand’s first web development companies, Clearview Communications, we developed web sites for the Royal NZ Navy, The National Business Review, The NZ Herald amongst many others.

I have worked in Information and Communications Technology starting as a computer operator and advancing to managing substantial projects such as implementing Air New Zealand’s new reservations system. Other employers include companies such as British Airways, Union Carbide (Eveready batteries) and The Heylen Research Centre.


I firmly believe in the value of Coastguard NZ’s work and would love to have the opportunity to contribute to such a world class organisation.


I have been involved with boats all my life, initially with sailing dinghies and the Ocean Youth Club in the UK. More recently I regularly go fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. I am also a private pilot and have been a display pilot at the last two “Warbirds over Wanaka” air shows.

Brought up on a Dairy Farm; did an Electrical Apprenticeship; then Dairy Farming with my wife for 12 Years 50/50; back to Electrical Trade and formed my own Industrial Electrical Business in 2010; currently employ staff of 22; contracting mainly to Fonterra & Oil & Gas Industries; hold a Functional Safety TUV Qualification in Machinery.


With 2 Years on the CNZ Board l would like to carry on with the Vision we have all set through Project Horizon, with the focus now on reviewing the Training Matrix and also getting Support on the ground into Units to help with their Compliance Requirements.


I am married to Rose and have 3 adult daughters, 4 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. Have lived all my life in South Taranaki and have a passion for giving back to the community. I have held Executive General Management, General Management and Executive Management positions in large NZ corporations ‐predominantly telecommunications (Post Office, Telecom, Transfield Services, Spark & Visionstream), but have also consulted to the air industry (Airways), power industry (Contact Energy, TransAlta, Mighty River Power), postal industry (NZ Post, Siemens), emergency services (Ambulance NZ) and the health industry (Siemens). I have been the director of a ‘not for profit’ (Kaipatiki Environmental Inc)







The senior positions held in various NZ corporations (listed above) were all in low margin businesses or initially poor performing businesses where my role was to improve performance both operationally and, in particular, financially. Success came through coaching and motivating large groups of individuals to perform, as well as process improvement. The revenues generated ranged from $100 M to $270 M p.a.


This role would provide a balance between being an operational crew member (with aspirations to become a Skipper) and my experience in management to bring a voice from the units to the board as well as a genuine understanding of governance from the board to the units.


I enjoy outside activities including exercise and boating. I am also a ‘lay member’ of one of the NZ Law Society Standards Committees and a branch committee member of the BOP Institute of Directors. I have completed a basic Te Reo Māori course to better understand my own culture.

I am a professional director and advisor specialising in governance, strategy and technology led transformation. Over a thirty‐year career I have worked with many organisations in the public, private and charitable sectors. Through those experiences I have developed strong skills in:

deploying technology as a critical enabler for change, transformation and competitive advantage

generating fresh thinking as organisations face disruption to legacy business models and people’s expectations

balancing risk against stretch in order to achieve new levels of performance and value

combining strategy, execution and good governance to create enduring economic and social wellbeing

empowering diverse high‐performance teams and co‐creation with customers, partners and colleagues


There is huge potential and necessity to advance, modernise and enhance the performance / experience of Coastguard NZ to ensure that the organisation continues to achieve its life‐saving purpose. Project Horizon and the commitment to improve the volunteer experience are the right first steps. However, we are now only at the start line. I want to join an effective and diverse Board that can help guide and empower

our executive, staff and volunteers to ensure that we “seize the day”.


Jodi and I are “empty nesters” with 3 adult children between 28‐31. We share our love of boating, having a 65’ Salthouse Passage Maker (heavy displacement launch) which we have taken on a “figure 8” circumnavigation of NZ (2017/18) and to Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia (2019). Both on and off the boat we love socialising with friends and family over good food and wine (perhaps too much). And we try to keep fit (currently training for half iron man) despite that!

I am a Chartered Accountant and Director at Rodgers & Co Chartered Accountants and hold a certificate of Public Practice. I am also a member of the NZ Institute of Management. I have held a commercial role operating in a finance and operation function.


After spending the past 2 years with Coastguard North Canterbury and the people that are involved and the passion they bring I view this as an opportunity to provide my skill set to a national body that has a significant purpose and also provides excellent opportunities for all volunteers involved in regards to training and experience.


Outside of Coastguard I am an active person, get out on my mountain bike, play golf and in recent years have taken up running with the aim to complete a full marathon in November this year.

I have had my own business as a financial advisor since 2000, with a Diploma in Business Studies and Financial Planning. I manage top end clients investing substantial sums.

I previously worked for the Dept. of Social Welfare for 16 years investigating benefit fraud and managed their buildings throughout Canterbury. Additionally, I set up a Call Centre pilot to analyse if this was an appropriate method to deliver services to Social Welfare clients. This involved managing 60 staff, project planning, analysis and recommendations to the Government Minister.



Project Horizon provides an amazing opportunity to move Coastguard forward, to enhance the brand and increase the support for volunteers and units. We need to focus our efforts on volunteer support to encourage and enable volunteers to achieve their training goals and take away some of the administration overload. I believe that we need to focus on retaining and valuing our current volunteers, so that we increase the average time a volunteer is part of the Coastguard family.

I want to represent the voice of the unit crew members as well as bring my business skills to the governance of Coastguard. I have a passion for the welfare of volunteers and service to our community.


I am a Tongan and I love researching my ancestry.

Since 2016 I have also volunteered with Victim Support, specialising in homicide, suicide and family harm. This gives me an insight into the needs of our volunteers when faced with trauma, death or body recovery. I am regularly called on by other units and the regional office to assist in supporting crew members.

My work with the Ryder‐Cheshire Foundation NZ provides me with experiences and understanding of a wide variety of ethnicities and socio‐economic backgrounds.

A Registered Civil Engineer specialised in construction, property management and disaster relief. Other roles included training and development of strategy. 1999‐2002: Southland Polytechnic as Manager Christchurch Campus responsible for all aspects including marketing & HR. Grew campus by 400% in 3 years. 2002‐2011: CEO Telford Rural Polytechnic: initially period of huge growth which involved major change in staff and culture. As a result of Government Policy ended by merging with Lincoln University. Throughout gained extensive experience in adult education, working with government agencies and change management.

2012 – Retired with more recently part time tutoring for Tai Poutini Polytechnic in CIMS and Marine Search and Rescue.


I have completed 2 years on the Coastguard New Zealand (national) Board seeing Project Horizon to this stage and would like the opportunity to see the Volunteer Strategy/Training Review through to completion.

Have received training in all areas. Helped develop industry training programmes to NZQA levels and presented to students at university and schools.

After being made redundant, I started a couple of online businesses and to help pay the mortgage, I now also work part time, managing a storage facility.

I also manage the Browns Bay Market, which is a key funder of the unit.



I have dealt with school leavers to high profile industry and business leaders, often on the same day. I learnt that the school leaver is tomorrow's leader, so listen to them; they may have some new ideas that may work. The common factor with the two groups is that they are both hungry for often the same knowledge.

industry for the last 33 years. The last 20 of which have been in

Executive roles. Well versed in organisational change, talent

management and governance, Mike brings strong technical,

commercial and strategic experience.

Mike and 5 other shareholders sold their business in July 2015 to Vodafone NZ Ltd after

successfully operating in the New Zealand market for over 17 years. Mike has professional

senior executive experience and is a highly capable relationship and people manager. He has

held Senior positions for multinationals along with large New Zealand Corporates such as New

Zealand Post and Telecom before becoming a shareholder in WXC Ltd, employing 70 people in

the NZ Telecommunications Industry.

Prior to this Mike worked for Reuters Ltd in offshore positions in South Africa, London and

Australia with responsibilities for the East Asia markets.

Outside of work Mike is extensively involved in Coastguard volunteering holding a Masters CoC,

Maritime NZ SRL. A Past President of Auckland Coastguard, Mike currently holds the elected

position of President of Coastguard New Zealand. Additional interests are aviation, which sees

Mike holding a Private Helicopter Pilot’s License, and motorsport.

Well organised and not accepting of mediocrity, Mike has a proven track record of driving

projects and positive change. Mike has a philosophy of collaboration to achieve results and is a

strong communicator. His involvement with both large Corporate work and volunteer based

organisations provides him broad experience in applying this approach for results.
