1 Introduction to Nokia A036 Wireless LANAccess Point
1.1 Nokia A036 technical overview
Nokia A036 Wireless LAN Access Point serves as a wireless hub that coordinatesand controls a wireless LAN. Portable devices equipped with IEEE802.11(b)compatible adapters can communicate with a wired LAN or with each otherthrough the Nokia A036. Awireless LAN can be implemented as an extension toGSM, GPRS and UMTS networks or to an existing wired LAN. Nokia A036 isWi-Fi certified.
Access Point management
Nokia A036 Wireless LAN Access Point has a web based management interfacewhich is designed to work with Internet Explorer. In addition, Nokia A036 can bemanaged via command line interface and new configuration data can bedownloaded via TFTP. Other management options include SNMP (SimpleNetwork Management Protocol), SSH (Secure Shell) and SCP (Secure CP).
Security
Nokia A036 supports three types of authentication specified in the IEEE802.11band IEEE802.11i standards; Open system authentication (Open Mode), WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy) key authentication and IEEE802.1x. In the OpenMode, authentication and the transfer of user data is not encrypted. In terms ofWEP, Nokia A036 supports encryption with the 40-bit option or extended 104-bithigh-level security.The IEEE802.1x is supported as part of the IEEE802.11isecurity framework.
In addition, the design of Nokia A036 provides physical security fromunauthorised access. All connectors are hidden inside the casing and there are noscrews to open, preventing unauthorised opening. Only trained personnel knowhow to open the casing.

Power Over Ethernet
Nokia A036 has a built-in Power Over Ethernet client, compliant withIEEE802.3af standard. The client allows both PoE installation and conventionalpower supply.
Antennas
Nokia A036 is equipped with fully balanced and high quality internal antennasresulting in an optimal RF performance. The antennas have been designed tooptimise coverage and reception when Nokia A036 is wall mounted.
Nokia A036 also allows the installation of external antennas. External antennasmay be needed if the access point needs to be hidden or, if for example omni-directional coverage is required. Three different types of external antennas areavailable by order.
Wi-Fi 802.11b functionality
Nokia A036 Wireless LAN Access Point conforms to the Wi-Fi recommendationfor default settings. Therefore, Nokia A036 needs no reconfiguration to achieveWi-Fi compatibility.

Note
Please read these safety guidelines and the instructions in the User Manual beforeinstalling and commissioning Nokia A036.
Electromagnetic fields and RF power
" Nokia recommends a safety distance of 4 cm (1.6 inches), based oninternational RF safety requirements. Please consider this when positioningNokia A036.
" Do not install Nokia A036 or its antennas in areas where there is a potentialrisk for interference with inadequately shielded medical equipment, such aslife supporting devices, pace makers, hearing aids or other electrically ormagnetically sensitive devices.
Handling of Nokia A036
" During storage and transportation, Nokia A036 must remain in its originalpackage in order to avoid mechanical damage.
" Handle Nokia A036 with care. Do not drop it or the package containing it.
" Keep Nokia A036 and all its parts and accessories out of small children'sreach.
" Nokia A036 must not be stored in areas where the temperature is below 0or above 60 degrees Celsius.
" Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaning solvents when cleaning NokiaA036. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth.

Operating environment
" Do not install Nokia A036 near sources of heat or direct sunlight, in dustyand dirty areas, or in a place where water may drop on the device.
" Do not install Nokia A036 in any potentially explosive area, e.g. where theair contains chemicals or particles. Sparks in such areas could causeexplosion or fire.
" Use only Nokia-specified external antennas and accessories. Unauthorisedantennas, modifications and accessories could damage Nokia A036 orcause it function against specifications and possibly even againstregulations, making its use illegal. Using unauthorised accessories willvoid the Nokia A036 warranty.
Power supply to Nokia A036
" Use only the specified power adapter or Power over Ethernet host system.The use of any other power supply could be unsafe and cause damage toNokia A036. Using an unauthorised power supply will void the NokiaA036 warranty.
" Disconnect the power before relocating the unit.
Note
Only qualified service personnel are allowed to repair Nokia A036 equipment.

2 Install
2.1 Fixing the mounting clamp
Nokia A036 is installed using a mounting clamp. You can either fix the clamp tothe wall with screws or fasten it with tie wraps. Note that you can use either onetie wrap or alternatively link two tie wraps together if the installation requires alonger attachment. See (3) in figure Mounting clamp for holes for tie wraps.
Before you start
Note
" Nokia recommends a safety distance of 4 cm (1.6 inches), based onprEN50383-50385. Please consider this when positioning Nokia A036.
To fix the mounting clamp to the wall with screws:
Steps
1. Place the mounting clamp against the wall and mark fixing points
See (1) and (2) in for marking fixing points. It is recommended you use thehorizontal holes (1) as they are stronger than the vertical holes (4).

2.2 Opening the casing
The Nokia A036 casing needs to be opened before placing onto the mountingclamp.

Depending on how you feed the cable, remove the appropriate cable inlet coverby pressing it gently (see figure Cable inlets). To avoid injury to your hands, usea tool for removing the inlet cover.

3 Commission
3.1 Commissioning Nokia A036
When the installation of Nokia A036 has been completed, commissioning canbegin.
The commissioning of Nokia A036 includes four main phases:
1. Connecting to Nokia A036
You can establish connection to the Access Point either via web or via commandline interface. For instructions, see Connecting to Nokia A036 via web andConnecting to Nokia A036 via command line interface.
2. Setting Access Point identity information
Identity information includes:
1. name of the Access Point
2. physical location of the device
3. person responsible for the device
4. hostname of the Access Point.
For instructions, see Setting Access Point identity information.
3. Configuring IP settings
IP settings include:
1. IP address of the Access Point
2. subnet mask for network
3. default gateway for packets not on the local subnet.

Wireless settings include:

Nokia A036 can be managed using the web user interface, Nokia A036Configuration Tool, or command line interface. For more information, see UsingNokia A036 Configuration Tool and Using command line interface.
3.2 Connecting to Nokia A036 via web
You can establish connection to Nokia A036 via web by running theAPConnection.vbs script in the Nokia A036 System Utilities CD-ROM. It isrecommeded you use Windows 2000 and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Alternatively, you can run the script from command line. For instructions, seeConnecting to Nokia A036 via command line interface.
Before you start
Check the MAC address of Nokia A036 from the label in the back cover of thedevice or from the side of the Access Point delivery package. You will need thelast four hex characters of the MAC address as you run the script.
Also make sure that your computer is in the same subnet as Nokia A036, which is169.254.xx.yy and that the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0.
Alternatively the computer may be DHCP enabled, in which case the DHCPserver will provide the IP address. DHCP is turned on by default.

Steps
1. Start the Nokia A036 System Utilities CD-ROM
2. Select Connect to A036 from the left hand menu
3. Click Connect via web
4. In the prompt, enter the last two octets (four hex characters) of theMAC address of Nokia A036 and click OK
A logon prompt appears.
5. Enter password and click OK
Expected outcome
The home page of the Nokia A036 Configuration Tool appears.
Further information
You can also use the Connect via CLI option in the CD-ROM to save theAPConnection.vbs script on your computer. After saving the script, you canexecute the file.

3.3 Connecting to Nokia A036 via command lineinterface
To establish connection to Nokia A036, run the APConnection.vbs script in theNokia A036 System Utilities CD-ROM. After saving the file on your computer,you can run the script from command line. It is recommended +you use Windows2000. The script is recommended mostly for local connections, experienced usersmay use Telnet to connect to Nokia A036. Using SSH to connect to Nokia A036is also possible, but this is not supported by the APConnection.vbs script.
Alternatively, you can run the script using a web browser. For instructions, seeConnecting to Nokia A036 via web.

Commission
Before you start

Expected outcome
Telnet window opens and a connection to the Access Point is established.

You can use the web user interface, Nokia A036 Configuration Tool, to modifythe following settings:

The web user interface also provides:
" Firmware upgrade function
" Nokia A036 statistics
" Soft reboot function
You can access the Nokia A036 Configuration Tool using Internet Explorer. Ifyou use the web to connect to Nokia A036, you are directed to the home page ofthe Nokia A036 Configuration Tool. For instructions, see Connecting to NokiaA036 via web.
You can also access the web user interface by following this procedure:

1. Open the web browser
2. Enter the IP address of Nokia A036 and press Enter

You can use command line interface to configure Nokia A036. If you use CLI toconnect to Nokia A036, a Telnet session opens automatically as soon asconnection to the Access Point is established. For instructions, see Connecting toNokia A036 via command line interface.
Note
A036 supports secured management connection by means of SSH. Transmitteddata is encrypted using RSA or DSA keys. By default, only an RSA key isavailable. In case a DSA key is needed, it must be generated by running '/etc/init.d/genkeys dsa'.
You can also open a Telnet session by following these instructions (Windowsmachine):
Steps
1. On the workstation, click Start -> Run
2. Type "telnet" and the IP address of Nokia A036 and press OK
Telnet window opens with a logon prompt.
3. Type username and password
Default username: root
Default password: private
It is highly recommended you change the default password as soon aspossible.

You can change the password needed for management access and the password (i.e. community string) required to make changes to Nokia A036 via SNMP, usingthe web based Nokia A036 Configuration Tool or via command line interface.

4.1.3 Preventing eavesdropping
You can change the security settings to prevent eavesdropping on the connectionto Nokia A036.
Nokia A036 supports WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) key authentication. NokiaA036 supports encryption with the 40-bit option or extended 104-bit high-levelsecurity:
40 bits The key is 10 hex characters long.
104 bits The key is 26 hex characters long.

4.2.3 Configuring access zone settings
You can configure the Access Zone using the Nokia A036 Configuration Tool orcommand line interface.
Nokia A036 Wireless LAN Access Point has a unique feature that secures sharedfiles: the Zone Privacy feature. When Zone Privacy is enabled, Nokia A036 filtersdata traffic at a low level to ensure that wireless users are protected frommalicious protocol attacks. The feature also protects the wireless user from otherusers viewing or accessing files on shared directories on their laptop hard diskdrives.
You can enable the Zone Privacy feature using the web based Nokia A036Configuration Tool or command line interface.

Subnet screening netmask The subnet mask for Nokia A036. Access Point denies access to thesubnet indicated by this netmask and Access Controller IP address.
Enable get Enables SNMP get operation. Disabled by default.
Enable set Enables SNMP set operation. Disabled by default. This also enables TFTPoperations.

4.2.4 Uploading configuration file via TFTP
Use TFTP client software and command line interface to upload configurationfile. After a successful upload, Nokia A036 will first check the validity ofparameters and then change the settings according to the configuration file.
Steps
1. Run your TFTP software and input the following information:
<HOST>: IP address of Nokia A036
<Port>: 69 (port number for TFTP)
<Configurefile>: name of the configuration file you
want to upload (the file name must be config.txt)
<RemoteFileName>: config.txt and the SNMP password
(default: config.txt#private)
2. On the workstation, click Start -> Run to open a command window
3. In the command window, type the following command:
tftp-i <IPAddress> put <Configurefile> <RemoteFileName>

Nokia A036 can be reset remotely via web (Service -> Reboot), using the restartcommand on CLI, or using the reset button (1).
When the power is on and Nokia A036 is functioning normally, the power LED(2) and network LED (3) are on, and the radio LED (4) is blinking.

There are three types of resets:
Normal reset
If you face problems with Nokia A036, one solution is to restart the unit:
1. Press the reset button for one second
2. The radio LED (4) stops blinking, and the unit will restart
Factory reset
Note
After factory reset Nokia A036 will use default settings. Therefore you will needto configure the unit again.
If you face major problems with Nokia A036, perform the factory reset:
1. Press the reset button for >5 seconds
When you press the reset button, the radio LED (4) will stop blinking.
2. Stop pressing the button when the radio LED goes off.
The unit will now restart with default values.
Default password: private
Auto IP address: 169.254.x.y (x. y = the last two octects of the MAC address)
Rescue system
Note
Nokia A036 will use special rescue settings when it restarts in the rescue mode(SSID = "rescue"). You will need to download software and configure the unitagain. Please verify that you have valid software.

If the factory reset did not solve the problems with Nokia A036, use the rescuesystem:
1. Disconnect power supply
2. Press the reset button and at the same time connect power supply
The unit starts in the rescue mode, which can be seen in the network LED (3)blinking at one second intervals.
The rescue system requires new software download. The download can beperformed via TFTP (plain images, no zipped files in rescue mode).

5 Upgrade
5.1 Upgrading via TFTP
Use TFTP client software and command line interface to upgrade Nokia A036.The uploaded file can be a plain image file (system, rescue or MVC), or if the fileis tarred and compressed, more images can be uploaded in a single uploadsession.
Caution
The preferred method is to upload all files within one .tgz package to avoidincompatibility problems. Do not uncompress the package.
Steps
1. Run your TFTP software and input the following information:
<HOST>: IP address of Nokia A036
<Port>: 69 (port number for TFTP)
<LocalFirmwareFile>: the name of the new firmware file
you want to upgrade
<RemoteFileName>: SNMP password

8.1 config.txt
The configuration file is a text file containing all configurable parameters ofNokia A036. You can modify the parameters in the configuration file and thenupload the file to Nokia A036 using TFTP. After a successful upload, NokiaA036 will first check the validity of the parameters and then change the settingsaccording to the configuration file.
Please note that it is also possible to send a partial file with only some of thesettings to change only some specifics of the configuration. All parameters arenot required.
Editing the file
The configuration file must be edited and saved using a text editor that does notinsert carriage returns at each linefeed (Windows does this by default). Hence, aUnix type editor is recommended.
Please be advised that it may be good practice to insert 'sleep 1' in between eachline so that the script processor will wait one second before moving on to the nextinstruction. When changing several similar parameters in a row, a value higherthan 1 may be more suitable.

A.1.1 External antennas for Nokia A036
Nokia A036 Wireless LAN Access Point is equipped with internal antennas toprovide optimal RF performance. However, if special shape coverage is requiredor if the Nokia A036, despite its special design, needs to be hidden for anyreason, external antennas can be installed along with the access point. Please donote that the internal antennas cannot be used simultaneously with the externalantennas; they are mutually exclusive solutions.
Nokia provides three different external antenna types, catering to different needs:

These antennas are only for indoor use and should only be used with Nokia A036Access Point.
In order to obtain maximum coverage it is preferred to connect two antennassimultaneously to the Nokia A036 Access Point in case of Omnidirectional andBidirectional antennas.
Two antennas provide space diversity which reduces and deletes holes created bysignal reflections and makes the signal more reliable and balanced. Only the sameantenna types can be used together.
A single Dual Slant antenna provides cross polarisation.
The antennas are easy to mount, small and tamper proof. Due to the uniquedesign it is easy to adjust them into each installation environment. An installationinstruction sheet is provided with each antenna sales package.
RF planning is an important part of installation in order to get the best possibleperformace to the planned coverage area. Every installation is unique. In eachcase, different obstacles � such as walls, construction materials and area size -affect the signal and RF performance.
