As businesses contemplate how to introduce a new generation of services, improve productivity, lower costs and build a competitive advantage, they are faced with tough decisions about the performance and capacity of their existing local area networks (LAN). As connectivity demanded by devices and users increases from megabits to a gigabit, new copper cables and switches are often recommended for better performance. However, this upgrade is labor and cost intensive. In addition, the capacity requirements will continue to grow and eventually move toward 10 gigabits per second.

The logical alternative is to install a fiber-based network that can handle speeds well beyond a gigabit. Nokia Optical LAN is a fiber-based solution that meets the needs of the modern-day business while providing a cost-effective evolution as speeds continue to increase. Nokia Optical LAN delivers significantly better performance than a traditional copper-based LAN, enabling network convergence, simpler operations, greater speeds per user, and up to 50% savings in operating costs.

Bringing the LAN up to light speedToday’s local area networks use a copper architecture and often separate networks are used to carry different services. The copper deployment model creates an environment that is wasteful and inefficient to maintain, leading to crowded equipment rooms, complex wiring closets and increased high-volume air conditioning (HVAC) requirements.

Nokia Optical LAN brings the LAN up to light speed. The advanced performance means all voice, data and video services can be supported on a single fiber distribution architecture with the right user experience. Optical LAN’s Quality of Service (QoS) and high bandwidth allow organizations to converge voice, video and data all onto the same fiber network allowing more efficient maintenance, cabling and overall performance. Optical LAN’s single distribution platform also significantly reduces network complexity, the amount of equipment needed, and power consumption.

GPON: the technology behind Optical LANOptical LAN is based on a technology called Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPON). GPON has already been deployed by many of the world’s largest telecommunications carriers and serves millions of users worldwide. It has quickly established itself as the worldwide standard for delivering a new generation of services. Among other benefits, GPON provides an enormous amount of bandwidth — 2.5 Gb/s downstream and 1.25 Gb/s upstream — over a single strand of glass.

GPON architecture uses purely passive components such as splitters between the optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network terminal (ONT), reducing the chance of equipment failure. In Optical LAN, the core underlying technology is still Ethernet, with GPON Encapsulation Mode (GEM) used as the packaging format. GEM packages the IP packets efficiently with minimum overhead as they transit between the OLT and ONT.

Each fiber optic cable can be shared by up to 64 ONTs, minimizing the amount of fiber cabling required. Although multiple users share the same passive optical network (PON), robust QoS and bandwidth mechanisms ensure that the traffic is correctly prioritized and peak bursts enabled, so that each user or devices gets the bandwidth they need.

Nokia Bell Labs has developed a modeling tool that compares these costs for Optical LAN and traditional LAN. This tool shows that Optical LAN provides total savings of 35%-55%, depending on the specific network configuration.

• Energy. With cutting edge technology and continuous efforts to improve power efficiency, Nokia Optical LAN is a proven “green” solution. Considering the total power consumption of all active components in a LAN, ventilation and air-conditioning for equipment, Optical LAN power savings can be greater than 50%

• Floor space. Our centralized, high-density OLT platform enables deployment in a smaller footprint relative to multiple distributed copper-based Ethernet switches, bringing space cost savings of 60%

• Service contracts. Optical LAN has significantly fewer active electronics resulting in maintenance cost savings of over 50%

• Fault management. Again, because of fewer active components, Optical LAN reduces fault management costs by up to 50%

Benefits of the Nokia Optical LAN solutionThe Nokia Optical LAN solution outperforms traditional copper-based LAN in all the key criteria.Robust securityOur solution provides a very secure environment for transporting sensitive data.

• Fiber is inherently harder to tap into, has no crosstalk and, unlike copper, is not affected by electromagnetic interference

• The Nokia solution has multiple security schemes preventing the interception of another user’s data or introducing a fraudulent ONT into a network (advanced encryption with two-way key exchange, advanced intrusion detection, ONT unique identification, etc.)

• The Nokia solution has protection mechanisms and pro-active monitoring to ensure high availability (link protection, logical layer protection, controller and line card redundancy, etc.)

Lower operating costsOptical LAN has significantly lower operating costs thanks to savings in maintenance, power, space, management, service contracts, testing, certification and upgrades.

ScalabilityThe Nokia Optical LAN solution enables flexibility in the network design and can easily scale.

• Optical LAN signals can run for up to 30km without needing any boosters or repeaters. This means the centralized access node (OLT) can be placed anywhere in the building or campus. There are no blind spots and no need for additional switches to reach every endpoint

• The market-leading capacity of the Nokia solution makes it simple to extend the network with more end points or to new buildings from the existing OLT

• This capacity of Optical LAN and Nokia’s QoS mechanisms ensure the delivery of all services in use today and the support of new services in the future

• Our ONT portfolio allows any type of deployment (ceiling, wall, desk mounted), provides Gigabit Ethernet interfaces in single or multiport configurations, and supports different powering options

• Capacity can be easily upgraded in the future using the same cabling and with minimal changes in the OLT

SD-WAN services are now an essential part of the network infrastructure employed by enterprise networks. This is driving customer service providers (CSPs) and system integrators (SIs) to enhance their portfolios by including them as a service offering. However, there are barriers that may prevent some from entering this market and reaping the benefits of offering this technology as a service. Hosting an SD-WAN service can include large start-up and hosting costs with a delayed time to revenue. In addition, there is the ongoing operations and maintenance of the service that may not be appealing to some CSPs. These factors may discourage some CSPs or SIs from hosting this service themselves.

Nuage Networks from Nokia has introduced a solution to this problem with their hosted SD-WAN service based on industry-leading Nuage Networks technology. With this service, Nuage Networks hosts and operates the SD-WAN infrastructure on behalf of CSPs and SIs allowing them to offer industry-leading SD-WAN services with a pay as you grow model, while providing an accelerated time to revenue and reduced start-up costs.

SD-WAN solutions are becoming accepted as a “must have” capability in enterprise networks today. With SD-WAN, enterprise IT departments will have deeper levels of visibility and control allowing their networks to be transformed to have greater scalability, service performance, and security while utilizing network resources much more efficiently.

The SD-WAN enterprise consumption model has rapidly shifted from being primarily an enterprise-driven, do it yourself (DIY) model to a being a managed service from a CSP. Offering an SD-WAN service is a natural extension to a CSP’s existing network services portfolio and allows the enterprise to focus on their core business. IDC1 predicts that SD-WAN managed services will top $4.3 billion in 2022 up from $218 billion in 2017. Appledore Research predicts2 that over half of all SD-WAN deployments will be managed before the end of 2019 and this will continue to grow each year after. Finally, as a testament to the market success of Nuage Networks, a recent blog by ACG Research3 shows that Nuage Networks SD-WAN technology has the largest SD-WAN market share (25%) in the service provider managed services segment.

However, entry barriers exist for CSPs or SIs who do not want to build, host, and maintain the service infrastructure. An SD-WAN infrastructure may be too costly to start-up and maintain and the business break-even point can be uncertain, creating business risk that some organizations may find unacceptable.

Managed service provider’s NOCEach MSP operates their own NOC and leverages their own customized and dedicated SD-WAN portal view to develop SD-WAN services for their enterprise customers or downstream resellers. All functions including the degree of policy-driven network and application control and visibility are enabled by Nuage Networks as part of each contracted service agreement.

Each MSP purchases network services gateways (NSGs) directly from Nuage Networks to meet their enterprise customer’s networking requirements. The MSP also monitors the status and health of the enterprise SD-WAN network and NSGs through their NOC.

If a network issue arises that can be attributed to Nuage Networks then the MSP can raise a ticket to engage Nuage Network’s technical support service delivered out of the hosted VNS operations.

ConclusionSD-WAN services are a critical part of enterprise WAN transformation bringing a crucial level of visibility, control, security and automation in the era of cloud architectures. By adopting a hosted SD-WAN service from Nuage Networks, CSPs can transform themselves immediately into an SD-WAN MSP with little risk and start to add net new service revenue to complement their existing service offerings. In addition, by partnering with a world leader in service delivery that leverages industry leading SD-WAN 2.0 technology from Nuage Networks, MSPs will inherently evolve their service offering to stay at the forefront of technology to differentiate themselves well into the future.

Enterprise networkThe enterprise WAN network typically consists of a combination of WAN transport links that can include IP/MPLS circuits and broadband internet circuits that connect branches and other locations. At the network level, an SD-WAN service is realized by an overlay VPN that connects other SD-WAN endpoints creating a programmable overlay mesh or intelligent networking fabric. To deploy an SD-WAN service, the enterprise will first deploy MSP-provided NSGs at each desired branch location. These NSGs will auto-configure and auto-authenticate and within minutes the service will be up and running as programmed by the service definition defined by the MSP for the enterprise.

There are several types of NSGs that can be purchased by the MSP to deploy in the enterprise customer’s network:

■ BranchNSGisthemostcommontypeandisdeployedatbranchlocationsandhasawiderangeofformfactorsthatarerightsizedforthroughputandportrequirements

■ NSG-BorderRouter(NSG-BR)isaspecifictypeofNSGthatisdeployedontheboundaryofthedatacenterandWANallowingforaseamlessforwardingplaneacrossbothnetworkboundaries

■ NSG-UnderlayBorderRouter(NSG-UBR)isaspecifictypeofNSGthatisdeployedwithintheWANtoconnectheterogeneousunderlayWANsegments

Each enterprise will have their own view of the SD-WAN portal for management and visualization of the SD-WAN service and may also have limited self-service capabilities. All functions available are enabled by the MSP as part of the contracted service agreement.
