Network services
The wireless phone described in this guide is approved for use on the EGSM 900, GSM
1800 and GSM 1900 network.
Triband is a network dependent feature. Check with your local service provider if youcan subscribe to and use this feature.
A number of features included in this guide are called network services. These are
special services that you arrange through your wireless service provider. Before you can
take advantage of any of these network services, you must subscribe to them through
your service provider and obtain instructions for their use from your service provider.
Note: Some networks may not support all language-dependent characters
and/or services.
Chargers and enhancements
Check the model number of any charger before use with this device. This device is
intended for use when supplied with power from ACP-7, ACP-12, LCH-9 and LCH-12
chargers. Note the specific model number of a charger varies with different type of
plug. For example, for ACP-12, the specific model number can be ACP-12C, ACP-12U orACP-12X, etc.
Warning: Use only batteries, chargers and accessories approved by the phone
manufacturer for use with this particular phone model. The use of any other
types may invalidate any approval or warranty applying to the phone, and may
be dangerous.
For availability of approved enhancements, please check with your dealer.
When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not
the cord.

General information

Access codes Security code (5 to 10 digits):
The security code may protectyour phone against unauthoriseduse. It is supplied with the phone,and the default code is 12345.
Change the code, and keep thenew code secret and in a safe
place separate from your phone.
To change and use the code, seeSecurity settingson page 48.
PIN code and PIN2 code (4 to 8digits):
The PIN (Personal IdentificationNumber) code protects your SIM
card against unauthorised use.The PIN code is usually suppliedwith the SIM card.
To set the phone to request thePIN code each time the phone is
switched on, see Securitysettings on page 48.
The PIN2 code may be suppliedwith the SIM card. You need thecode to access some functions,such as charging unit counters.
If you key in an incorrect PIN
code three times in succession,the phone may display PINblockedand ask you to enter thePUK code. Contact your serviceprovider to obtain the PUK code.
PUK and PUK2 code (8 digits):The PUK (Personal UnblockingKey) code is required to change ablocked PIN code. The PUK2 codeis required to change a blockedPIN2 code.
If the codes are not supplied withthe SIM card, contact your localservice provider for the codes.
Barring password (4 digits): The
barring password is needed whenusing the Call barring service,see Security settingson page48. You can obtain the passwordfrom your service provider.

Signing PIN: The signing PIN isneeded for the digital signature.See Digital signatureon page67. The signing PIN is suppliedwith the SIM card if the SIM card
has a security module in it.If you key in an incorrect PINcode several times, the phonemay display PIN code blockedand ask you to key in the PUKcode. Contact your serviceprovider to get the PUK code.
Shared memoryThe following features in this phonemay use shared memory: phonebook, text messages and multimediamessages, images and ringing tonesin gallery, calendar and Java gamesand applications. Using any of thesefeatures may consume the sharedmemory. This is especially true withheavy use of any of the features,although some of the features mayhave a certain amount of memoryspecially allocated to them inaddition to the shared memory. For
example, saving many images, orJava applications, may take all theshared memory. In this case yourphone may notify you that thememory is full. You need to deletesome of the contents or entriesusing shared memory beforecontinuing.

Functions of the flipcover
Your phone has a flipcover. Opening and
closing the flip coveraffects basic voice callhandling and text inputmethod.
Note that the keys on theflip cover work onlywhen the flip cover is properlyclosed.
Answer or end a voice call
You can customise the functionof the flip cover with respect tovoice call handling in Settings,Call settings, Flip call handling.Refer to Flip call handlingonpage 43.
Change text input method
When you need to input text,open the flip cover to usehandwriting input method, closethe flip cover to use keypad inputmethod. Further instructionsabout the handwriting input
method start on page 14.Note it is recommended that alwayskeep the flip cover closed when youare not writing or using it to forcalls.
Stylus and touch padThe stylus is in the slot of the backcover, and the touch pad is under theflip cover of the phone. You canwrite with the stylus on the touchpad to input text. For information onhow to input text with the stylus, seeHandwriting input methodonpage 14.

Screen saver
If you have set the screen saver on,
the phone automatically activatesan animation or still image as screensaver after a pre-set period of timein standby mode. You can alsocustomise the time after which thephone activates the screen saver.Please refer to Screen saver
settings on page 42.Independent of the screen saversettings, for power saving, a digitalclock view will overwrite the wholedisplay when for a certain time nofunction of the phone has been used.
Note that if you have not set thetime, 00:00 is displayed. You can setthe time in Settings, Time and datesettings.
The screen saver cannot be activatedwhen the flip cover of the phone isopen.
Wallpaper
You can set your phone to display abackground image, wallpaper, whenthe phone is in standby mode. Youcan choose a wallpaper in Settings,Display settings, Wallpaper. Seealso Wallpaperon page 46.

2. Getting started
Remove and mount theback cover
There are two different back coversin your sales package. One is withthe stylus holder to carry the stylus,the other is flat. You can choosewhich one to use. Below areinstructions on how to remove andmount the two kinds of back covers.
For cover with stylus holder
1. Slide the stylus toward the topend of the phone to remove (1).
2. Press down the back coverrelease button with the stylus (2),and slide the back cover slightlytoward the bottom end of the
phone (3). Lift the back cover toremove (4).
3. Position the back cover as shownin the illustration (5). Slide the
back cover toward the top end ofthe phone to lock (6).
4. Slide the stylus toward thebottom end of the phone until itreaches the end of the slot (7).
For flat cover
1. Press the back cover releasebutton (1), slide the back cover
slightly toward the bottom end ofthe phone (2), and lift the backcover to remove.

2. Position the back cover as shownin the illustration (3). Slide theback cover toward the top end ofthe phone to lock. (4).
Install the SIM card and
the battery Keep all miniature SIM cards outof the reach of small children.
The SIM card and its contacts caneasily be damaged by scratchesor bending, so be careful whenhandling, inserting or removingthe card.
Before installing the SIM card,always make sure that the phoneis switched off and disconnectedfrom the charger or any otherdevices, and then remove thebattery.
1. Lift the battery up from the
finger grip on the phone withyour fingers (1) to remove.
2. Carefully lift the SIM card holderfrom the finger grip of the phonewith your finger (2). Flip coverthe holder open (3).
3. Insert the SIM card into the slotof the SIM card holder, bevelledcorner first and golden contact
facing out (4).
4. Close the SIM card holder (5) andpress it to lock.
5. Position the battery so the goldencontacts match up with those onthe phone. Insert the battery (6).

Charging the battery1. Connect the plug from the
charger to the socket on thebottom of the phone.
2. Plug the charger to a standard ACoutlet.
After a few seconds, thebattery indicator on thedisplay starts to scroll frombottom to top.
When the battery is aboutfull, the bar in the displaystops scrolling.
Charging time depends on thecharger and battery.
3. Disconnect the charger from theAC outlet and the phone oncecharging is complete.
Note: You can use thephone while the battery ischarging. However, if thebattery is completely empty,it may need to charge a fewminutes before you canmake or receive calls orbefore the battery indicatorappears.
Switching the phone onand off
Press and hold the powerkey.
Note that if the phonedisplays Insert SIM cardeven though the SIMcard is properly inserted,or SIM card notsupported, contact your networkoperator or service provider. Yourphone does not support 5 Volt SIM
cards and the card may need to bechanged.
Warning: Do not switch thephone on when wirelessphone use is prohibited orwhen it may causeinterference or danger.
TIPS ON EFFICIENTOPERATION: Yourphone has a built-inantenna. As with anyother radiotransmitting device, do not touchthe antenna unnecessarily when thephone is switched on. Contact with
the antenna affects call quality andmay cause the phone to operate at ahigher power level than otherwiseneeded. Not touching the antennaarea during a phone call optimisesthe antenna performance and thetalktime of your phone.

Access menu functions
By scrolling
1. To access the menu, press Menu.
2. Scroll with or through the
menu and select, for example,Settingsby pressing Select.
3. If the menu contains submenus,select the one you want, forexample Call settings.
4. If the selected submenu containsfurther submenus, repeat step 3.
Select the next submenu, forexample Anykey answer.
5. Select the setting of your choice.
6. Press Back to return to theprevious menu level, and Exit or
to exit the menu.
By using a shortcut
You can access most of the menus,but not all, by using the shortcut.
The menus, submenus and settingoptions are numbered. To access amenu using the shortcut, in standbymode, press Menu, and within twoseconds, key in the first number of
the menu you want to access. Keepgoing until youve entered all thenumbers.
For example, to enter Anykeyanswer, press Menu 5-4-2(Settings-Call settings-Anykeyanswer).
Help textMost of the menu functions havebrief help texts. To view the helptext, scroll to the menu, pause forabout 15 seconds. To exit the helptext, press Back. See more in Helptext activation on page 46.
Keypad lock (Keyguard)You can lock the keypad to preventaccidental key presses.

Handle a waiting call
After you activate the Call waitingfunction in your phone, you may beable to receive another call whenyou have an ongoing call (networkservice).
Call waitingis under Settings, Callsettings. See also Call waitingonpage 44.
To answer the waiting call
Press .
Press Answer if its available. Press Options, and select
Answer.
When the waiting call is active, theoriginal call is on hold.
To reject the waiting call
Press Options, and select Reject.
Press Reject if available.
Tip: Press to end the activecall.
Swap calls (networkservice)
When you have an active call and aheld call, you may be able to switchtheir call status by pressing Options,and select Swap. Then the held callis active, and the previously activecall is put on hold.
Transfer calls (networkservice)
When you have an active call and aheld call, you may be able to connect
the other two parties by pressingOptions, and select Transfer. Thenyour call with either party is ended.
Make a conference callConference calling is a networkservice. It allows up to six people totake part in a call.
1. Call the first participant.
2. To call a new participant, pressOptions and select New call.
3. Enter, or find from the phonebook, the phone number of thenew participant, and press Call.The first call is put on hold.
4. When the new call is answered,join the first participant to thecall by pressing Options, andselect Conference.
Alternatively, the secondparticipant can call you after youhave established a call with the
first participant.
5. To add a new participant to theconference call, repeat steps 2 to4.

6. To have a private conversationwith one of the participants:

4. Handwriting input method
When you want to send a textmessage, make a note, add a name
to the phone book, this phoneprovides two different types of inputmethods:
keypad input method: using thekeypad for inputting. For moreinformation please see Keypadinput methods on page 20.
handwriting input method: usingthe stylus for handwritinginputting. This chapter illustrateshow to use handwriting inputmethod.
When the flip cover is open,handwriting input is indicated by
in your phone.
Note that handwriting input isavailable when the flip cover is openand the handwriting input indicatoris displayed on the upper left cornerof the screen. However, under somecircumstances, for example, incertain operations for searching a
name in Contacts, handwriting inputmethod maybe available eventhough the handwriting inputindicator is not displayed. You maynot be able to use handwriting inputmethods anywhere you can inputwith keys. For example,
You must use the keypad to inputany password-type of
information, such as the PINcode, PUK code, Security code,Barring code, and the passwordin certain functions andapplications.
You can not enter a number withhandwriting input while the
phone is in standby mode, or incalculator.

Writing with the stylusWhen you want to enter text, openthe flip cover of the phone toactivate the touch pad, then writegently in the middle of the touch padwith the stylus.

The middle of the touch pad is thewriting area (1). Surrounding thewriting area are eight functionalkeys (2-9). Tap the functional keyswith the stylus for the relevantfunctions when necessary.
The phone provides a list of sevencandidate characters or letters basedon the strokes you write. In addition,when you are writing Chinese text,the phone can also provide a list ofpredicted Chinese characters basedon the Chinese character to the leftof the cursor when you tap .

Recognition timeoutRecognition timeout is themaximum interval time allowedbetween two strokes input whenwriting a character or letter. Everytime you finish a stroke and lift thestylus from the touch pad, the phonebegins to count time. If you do notwrite the next stroke within thetimeout, its considered that youhave finished writing the characteror letter, and the phone begins to
recognise the strokes, and displays alist of candidates.
The default recognition timeoutsetting is Normal. If you want to
write faster or slower, you canchange the timeout in Settings,Phone settings, Recognition time-out. Refer to Recognition time-outon page 45.
Use gesturesYou can write several gestures forcertain functions.
The gestures include: Space, Enter,Clear, and Repeat. See the tablebelow. You can use (Repeat) only
in mode, but other gestures inall handwriting input modes.

Space When the cursor is blinking in the editing window,writing the gesture inserts a space to the left of
the cursor.

Touch pad toneA tone sounds when you press thestylus on the touch pad to startwriting a stroke, or tap thefunctional keys with the stylus. Youcan set the level tone together withthe keypad tone in Settings, Tonesettings, Keypad tones. Refer toTone settings on page 47.
Clear When the cursor is blinking, writing the gesturedeletes the Chinese character, English letter,number, or punctuation mark or symbol to the left
of the cursor. When the list of candidates or predicted Chinese
candidates is shown, writing the gesture clears thelist and deletes the Chinese character, Englishletter, number, or punctuation mark or symbol tothe left of the cursor.
Repeat You can only use the stroke when the input method is
. After you have just input a Chinese character,writing the gesture inputs the same Chinesecharacter again.
When the list of the candidate Chinese charactersis shown, writing the gesture inputs thehighlighted Chinese candidate twice.
When the list of the predicted Chinese candidatesis shown, writing the gesture ignore the list andinputs Chinese character to the left of the cursoragain.
Note this gesture only works with Chinese characters.

5. Keypad input methods
You can key in text, for example,when writing messages, using
traditional or predictive Englishinput.
When you are writing text, thepredictive English input is indicatedby and the traditional Englishinput by at the top left of thedisplay. The character case is
indicated by , , ornext to the text input indicator. Youcan change the character case bypressing . The number mode isindicated by , and you canchange between the letter andnumber mode by pressing andholding .
Setting predictiveEnglish input on or off
When writing text, press Optionsand select Dictionary.
To set the predictive Englishinput on, select English in the
dictionary options list. Predictivetext input is only available for thelanguages on the list.
To revert to traditional Englishinput, select Dictionary off.
Tip: To quickly set thepredictive English input on or
off when writing text, presstwice, or press and hold
Options.
Using predictiveEnglish input
You can key in any letter with asingle keypress. The predictiveEnglish input is based on a built-indictionary to which you can also addnew words.
1. Start writing a word using thekeys to . Press each
key only once for one letter. Theword changes after eachkeystroke.
Example: To write Nokiawhen the Englishdictionary is selected, press
, , ,
and .To insert a number while in lettermode, press and hold the desirednumber key.

2. When you have finished writingthe word and it is correct,confirm it by adding a space with
or by pressing any of thescroll keys. Pressing a scroll keyalso moves the cursor.

If the word is not correct, pressrepeatedly or press Options
and select Matches. When theword you want appears, confirmit.
If the ? character is displayedafter the word, the word youintended to write is not in thedictionary. To add the word to thedictionary, press Spell, key in theword (traditional English input isused) and press Save. When the
dictionary becomes full, the newword replaces the oldest one thatwas added.
3. Start writing the next word.
Writing compound words
Key in the first part of the word and
confirm it by pressing . Write thelast part of the word and confirm theword.
Using traditionalEnglish input
Press a number key, to ,repeatedly until the desiredcharacter appears. Not all charactersavailable under a number key areprinted on the key. The charactersavailable depend on the languageselected in the Phone languagemenu, see Languageon page 45.
To insert a number while in lettermode, press and hold the desirednumber key.
If the next letter you want islocated on the same key as the
present one, wait until the cursorappears, or press any of the scrollkeys and then key in the letter.

Messages(Menu 1)
You can read, compose, send andsave text and multimedia messagesto and from compatible devices(network services). All messages areorganised into folders.
Before you can send any text, orpicture, you need to save your
message centre number, seeMessage settings on page 32.
Text messages
Your phone can send and receivemulti-part messages, which consistof several ordinary text messages
(network service). This may affectthe invoicing for the message. Youcan check the number of charactersavailable and messages to be sent inthe counter on top of the screen.Note that some characters mayrequire more space than others, forexample Chinese characters require
more space than English letters, andthe counter may adjust the numberof maximum number of charactersavailable accordingly. For pricing ofmulti-part messages, contact yourservice provider.
You can also send and receive textmessages that contain pictures.
Each picture message is made up ofseveral text messages. Therefore,sending one picture message maycost more than sending one textmessage.
Note: The picture messagefunction can be used only if
it is supported by yournetwork operator or serviceprovider. Only phones thatoffer picture messagefeatures can receive anddisplay picture messages.
Compose and send messages1. Press Menu, and select
Messages, Text messagesandCreate message.
Tip: To quickly open theCreate messagemenu, press

Options for sending a messageAfter you have written a message,
press Options and select Sendingoptions.
To send a message to severalrecipients, select Send to many.When you have sent the messageto everyone you want to send itto, press Done.
To send a message using amessage profile, select Sendingprofileand then the desiredmessage profile.

Composing and sending SMSe-mailNokia 3108 phone provides e-mailfeature:
SMS e-mail: sending e-mail viaSMS. The following sectiondescribes how to use SMS e-mail.
Before you can send SMS e-mail,
you need to save the settings forsending SMS e-mail, see Messagesettingson page 32. For availabilityand subscription to the SMS e-mailservice, contact your networkoperator or service provider. To savean e-mail address in Contacts, seeSave multiple numbers and textitems per nameon page 37.

Read and reply to a messageWhen you have received a message,the indicator and the number ofnew messages followed by... messages receivedare shown.
The blinking indicates that themessage memory is full. Before youcan receive new messages, deletesome of your old messages.
The text messages function usesshared memory. Refer to Sharedmemoryon pagex.
1. Press Show to view the newmessage, or press Exit to view itlater.
Reading the message later:
Press Menu, and selectMessages, Text messagesandInbox.
2. If more than one message hasbeen received, select the one thatyou want to read. An unreadmessage is indicated by .

Archive folder and my foldersTo organise your messages, you canmove some of them to the Archivefolder, or add new folders for yourmessages.
While reading a message, pressOptions. Select Move, scroll to thefolder that you want to move themessage to and press Select.
To add or delete a folder, pressMenu, and select Messages, Textmessages, and My folders.
To add a folder, press Options
and select, Add folder.
To delete a folder, scroll to thefolder that you want to delete,press Options and select Deletefolder.
Multimedia messages
Note: This function can beused only if it is supportedby your network operator orservice provider. Onlyphones that offercompatible multimediamessage features canreceive and displaymultimedia messages.
A multimedia message can containtext, sound and a picture. The phonesupports multimedia messages thatare up to 50 KB in size. If themaximum size is exceeded, the
phone may not be able to receive themessage. Depending on the network,you may receive a text message thatincludes an Internet address whereyou can view the multimediamessage.
If the message contains a picture,
the phone scales it down to fit thedisplay area.
Note: IfAllow multimediareception is set to Yesor Inhome network, youroperator or service providermay charge you for everymessage you receive.
Multimedia messaging supports thefollowing formats:
Picture: JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP.
Sound: Scalable Polyphonic MIDI(SP-MIDI) and monophonicringing tones.
The phone does not necessarilysupport all variations of the fileformats mentioned above. If areceived message contains anyunsupported elements, they may bereplaced with the file name and thetext Object format not supported.

Note that you may not be able toreceive any multimedia messages ifyou have a call in progress, a gameor another Java application running,or an active browsing session over
GSM data (see Keying in the servicesettings manually on page 60).Because delivery of multimediamessages can fail for a variety ofreasons, do not rely solely uponthem for essential communications.
Writing and sending a
multimedia messageTo set the settings for multimediamessaging, see Settings formultimedia messages on page 33.To check the availability or subscribeto the multimedia messagingservice, contact your networkoperator or service provider.
1. Press Menu, and selectMessages, Multimedia msgs.and Create message.
2. Key in or use the stylus to write amessage. See Keypad inputmethodson page 20 orHandwriting input methodon
page 14.To insert a picture or a sound clip,press Options, and select Insertimageor Insert sound clip,respectively. The list of availablefolders in the Galleryis shown.Open a specific folder, scroll tothe desired picture or sound,press Options and select Insert.The or indicator in the
header of the message indicatesthat a picture or sound has beenattached. Copyright protectionsmay prevent some images,ringing tones and other content
from being copied, modified,transferred or forwarded.
To insert a name from Contacts,press Options, select Moreoptionsand Insert contact.Scroll to the desired name, pressOptions and select Insert
contact.To insert a number, pressOptions, select More optionsandInsert number. Key in thenumber or search for it inContacts, and press OK.
3. To view the message beforesending it, press Options andselect Preview.
4. To send the message, pressOptions and select Send tonumber(or Send to e-mailorSend to many).
5. Enter the recipients phonenumber (or e-mail address) or
search for it in Contacts. PressOK and the message is moved tothe Outboxfolder for sending.
It may take more time to send amultimedia message than to senda text message. While themultimedia message is being
sent, the animated indicatoris displayed and you can useother functions on the phone. If

there is an interruption while themessage is being sent, the phonetries to resend it a few times. Ifthis fails, the message willremain in the Outboxfolder and
you can try to resend it later fromthere.
The messages that you have sentwill be saved in the Sent itemsfolder if the setting Save sentmessagesis set to Yes. SeeSettings for multimedia
messageson page 33.Reading and replying to amultimedia messageThe blinking indicates that thememory for multimedia messages isfull, see Multimedia messagesmemory full on page 30.
When your phone is receiving amultimedia message, the animatedindicator is displayed. When themessage has been received, theindicator and the textMultimedia message receivedareshown.
The multimedia message function
uses shared memory, see Sharedmemoryon pagex.
1. Press Show to view the message,or press Exit to view it later.
Reading the message later: PressMenu, and select Messages,Multimedia msgs. and Inbox.
2. Scroll to view the message. PressOptions and some of thefollowing options may beavailable.
Delete messageto delete a
saved message.

Inbox, Outbox, Saved and Sentitems foldersThe phone saves the multimediamessages that have been received inthe Inboxfolder of the Multimedia
msgs. submenu.
Multimedia messages that have notyet been sent are moved to theOutboxfolder of the Multimediamsgs. submenu.
The multimedia messages that youwish to send later, can be saved in
the Saved itemsfolder of theMultimedia msgs. submenu.
The multimedia messages that havebeen sent are saved in the Sentitemsfolder of the Multimediamsgs. submenu if the setting Savesent messagesis set to Yes. SeeSettings for multimedia messageson page 33.
Multimedia messagesmemory full
When you have a new multimediamessage waiting and the memoryfor the messages is full, the indicator
blinks and Multimedia memoryfull, view waiting msg. is shown. Toview the waiting message, pressShow. To save the message, pressOptions, select Save messageanddelete old messages by firstselecting the folder and then the oldmessage to be deleted. Note thatunless you have chosen to save thewaiting message, the message will
not be saved in your phone evenwhen you view it.
To discard the waiting message,press Exit andYes. If you press No,you can view the message.
Delete messages
1. To delete text messages, press
Menu, and select Messages, Textmessagesand Delete messages.
To delete all text messages fromall folders, select All messages
and when Delete all messagesfrom all folders?is displayed,press OK. If the folders containunread messages, the phone willask whether you want to deletethem also.
To delete multimedia messages,
press Menu, and selectMessages, Multimedia msgs.and Delete messages.
2. To delete all messages from afolder, scroll to the folder andpress Select. If the foldercontains unread messages, thephone will ask whether you wantto delete them also.

Chat
You can have a text message basedconversation with another personusing this faster text messagingapplication (network service). Youcannot save received or sentmessages, but you can view themwhile chatting. Each message is sentas a separate text message.
1. To start a chat session, press
Menu, select MessagesandChat. Enter or get from your
phone book the phone number ofthe person you want to chat with,and press OK.
Another way to start a chat
session: When you have receiveda message, press Show to read it.To start a chat session, press
Options and select Chat.
2. Enter your nickname for the chatsession and press OK.
3. Compose your chat message.
4. To send the message, pressOptions and select Send.
5. The reply message from the other
person is shown above youroriginal message.
To reply to the message, press OKand repeat steps 3 and 4.
6. To end the chat session, press OKand Options, and select Quit.
To view the most recent messages of
the current chat session, pressOptions and select Chat history. Themessages that you sent are indicated
by "", and the sendersnickname. Press Back to return tothe message you are currently
writing. To edit your nickname,select the option Chat name.
Voice messages
Voice mailbox is a network serviceand you may need to subscribe to it.For more information and for the
voice mailbox number, contact yourservice provider.
Press Menu, and select Messagesand Voice messages. Select
Listen to voice messagesto callyour voice mailbox at the phonenumber that you have saved in
the Voice mailbox numbermenu.Each phone line may have its ownvoice mailbox number, see Linefor outgoing calls on page 44.
Voice mailbox numberto enter,get from your phone book, or edityour voice mailbox number. Press
OK to save it.
If supported by the network, theindicator will show new voicemessages. Press Listen to call yourvoice mailbox number.
Tip: Pressing and holdingcalls your voice mailbox.

Info messages
With the info message networkservice you may be able to receivemessages on various topics fromyour service provider, for exampleweather or traffic conditions. Foravailable topics and the relevanttopic numbers, contact your serviceprovider.
If the GPRS connection is set toAlways online, the info messagesmay not be received. In that case, set
the GPRS connection to Whenneeded, see GPRS Connectiononpage 61, to enable reception of infomessages.
Message settings
The message settings affect the
sending, receiving and viewing ofmessages.
Settings for text messages1. Press Menu, and select
Messages, Message settings,Text messagesand Sendingprofile.
2. If more than one message profileset is supported by your SIM card,select the set you want tochange.
Select Message centrenumberto save the phonenumber of the message centrethat is required for sendingtext messages. You will
receive this number from yourservice provider.
Select Messages sent viatoselect the message type Text,E-mail, Pagingor Fax.
Select Message validitytoselect the length of time forwhich the network shouldattempt to deliver yourmessage.
For message type Text, selectDefault recipient numberto
save a default number forsending messages for thisprofile.
Select Delivery reportsto askthe network to send deliveryreports about your messages(network service).
Select Use GPRSto set GPRSas the preferred SMS bearer(network service).
Select Reply via same centreto allow the recipient of yourmessage to send you a replyvia your message centre(network service).
Select Rename sendingprofileto change the name ofthe selected message profile.The message profile sets areonly displayed if your SIMcard supports more than oneset.

Overwrite settingsWhen the text message memory isfull, the phone cannot receive orsend any new messages. However,you can set the phone to
automatically replace old textmessages in the Inboxand Sentitemsfolders with the new ones.
Press Menu, and select Messages,Message settings, Text messagesand Overwriting in inboxorOverwriting in sent items. Select
Allowedto set the phone to replacethe old text messages with new onesin the Inboxor the Sent itemsfolder,respectively.
Settings for multimediamessagesPress Menu, and select Messages,
Message settingsand Multimediamsgs.. Select
Save sent messages. Select Yesto set the phone to save sentmultimedia messages in the Sentitemsfolder. If you select No, thesent messages are not saved.
Delivery reportsto ask thenetwork to send delivery reportsabout your messages (networkservice)
Scale image down. Select Yestoset the phone to scale the imageinserted in the multimediamessage to the default size, if the
original size of the image is largerthan the default size. If you selectNo, the inserted image will be
added into the message as itsoriginal size.
Allow multimedia reception.Choose No, Yesor In homenetworkto use the multimedia
service. If you choose In homenetwork, you cannot receivemultimedia messages whenoutside your home network.
Incoming multi- mediamessages. Select Retrieveto setthe phone to automatically fetch
newly received multimediamessages, or select Rejectif youdo not wish to receivemultimedia messages. Thissetting is not shown if the Allowmultimedia reception is set toNo.
Connection settings. DefineWAP connection settings forretrieving multimedia messages.Activate the set where you wantto save the connection settingsand then edit the settings.
Settings' name. Enter the newname for the connection set
and press OK. Homepage. Enter the
homepage address of the WAPservice that you want to use,press for a dot, and pressOK.
Session mode. Select
Permanentor Temporary.

Data bearer. Select GPRS.
Bearer settings, to edit thefollowing items:
GPRS access point. Enter

address, press for a dot,and press OK. You obtainthe IP address from yournetwork operator orservice provider.

To receive the multimedia
connection settings as a text
message
You may be able to receive theservice settings as a text messagefrom the network operator or serviceprovider that offers the WAP servicethat you want to use. For more
information, contact your networkoperator or service provider.
Font size settingTo select the font size for readingand writing messages, press Menu,and select Messages, Messagesettings, Other settingsand Font
size.
Service commands
Press Menu, and select Messagesand Service commands. Enter andsend service requests (also known asUSSD commands), such as activation
commands for network services, toyour service provider (networkservice).
Call register(Menu 2)
The phone registers the phonenumbers of missed, received anddialled calls, and the approximatelength and cost of your calls.
The phone registers missed andreceived calls only if the networksupports these functions, the phoneis switched on and within thenetworks service area.

When you press Options in theMissed calls, Received callsandDialled numbersmenu, you can, forexample, view the date and the timeof the call, edit or delete the phone
number from the list, save thenumber in the phone book, or send amessage to the number.
Recent calls lists
Press Menu, and select Call registerand then select
Missed callsto view the list of upto the last ten phone numbersfrom which somebody has triedto call you (network service). Thenumber in front of the (name or)phone number indicates theamount of call attempts fromthat caller.
Tip: When a note aboutmissed calls is displayed,press List to access the list ofphone numbers. Scroll to thenumber you would like to callback and press .
Received callsto view the list of
up to the last ten phone numbersfrom which you have mostrecently accepted calls (networkservice).
Dialled numbersto view the listof up to the 20 phone numbersthat you have most recently
called or attempted to call.
Delete recent call liststo deletethe recent calls lists. Selectwhether you want to delete allthe phone numbers in the recentcalls lists, or only those numbers
in the missed calls, received callsor dialled numbers lists. Youcannot undo the operation.
Call counters and call timers
Note: The actual invoice forcalls and services from your
service provider may vary,depending upon networkfeatures, rounding-off forbilling, taxes and so forth.
Press Menu, and select Call registerand then select
Call duration scroll to view the
approximate duration of yourincoming and outgoing calls inhours, minutes and seconds. Thesecurity code is required to clearthe timers.
Each phone line has its own calltimers and the timers of theselected line are displayed. See
Line for outgoing callson page44.
Call costs(network service).Select Last call unitsor All calls'unitsto check the cost of yourmost recent call or all calls interms of units specified within
the Show costs in function.Select Call cost settingsandselect Clear countersto clear the

counters, or select Show costs into set the phone to show theremaining talk time in terms ofcharging units, Units, or units ofcurrency, Currency. Contact your
service provider for charging unitprices.
Select Call cost limitto limit thecost of your calls to a certainamount of charging units or unitsof currency. The PIN2 code isrequired for the call cost settings.
Note: When no morecharging units orcurrency units are left,calls may only bepossible to theemergency numberprogrammed into yourphone (e.g. 112, 911, or
other official emergencynumber).
GPRS data counterScroll tocheck the amounts of data thatwere sent or received in the lastsession, data sent and received intotal, and to clear the counters.
The counter unit is a byte. Thesecurity code is required to clearthe counters.
GPRS connection timerScroll tocheck the approximate durationof the last GPRS connection orthe total GPRS connection. Youcan also clear the timers. To clear
the timers, the security code isrequired.
Contacts(Menu 3)
You can save names and phonenumbers in the phones memory
(internal phone book) and in the SIMcards memory (SIM phone book).
The internal phone book maysave up to 300 names withnumbers and text notes abouteach name. The number of namesthat can be saved depends on thelength of the names, and the
number and length of the phonenumbers and text items.
The phone supports SIM cardsthat can save up to 250 namesand phone numbers. Names andnumbers saved in the SIM cardsmemory, are indicated by .
Phone book settings
Press Menu and select ContactsandSettings. Select
Memory in useto select thephone book you want to use. Tofind names and numbers from
both phone and SIM card, selectPhone and SIM. The names andnumbers will be saved in thephones memory.

Save names and phonenumbers (Add names)

3. Enter the phone number, andpress OK.
4. When the name and number aresaved, press Done.
Tip: Quick save In standbymode, key in the phonenumber. Press Options, andselect Save. Enter the name,press OK and Done.
Save multiple numbers andtext items per name
You can save different types ofphone numbers and short text itemsper name in the phones internalphone book.
The first number saved is
automatically set as the defaultnumber and it is indicated with a
frame around the number typeindicator, for example . Whenyou select a name from the phonebook, for example to make a call, thedefault number is used unless you
select another number.1. Make sure that the memory in
use is either Phoneor Phone andSIM. See Phone book settingson page 36.
2. To access the list of names andphone numbers, press in
standby mode.3. Scroll to the name saved in the
phones internal phone book towhich you want to add a newnumber or text item, and pressDetails.
4. Press Options and select Add
numberor Add detail.5. Select one of the following
number types General,Mobile, Home, Office
and Fax,
or text types E-mail address,Web address, Postal
addressand Note.
To change the number or texttype, select Change typein theoptions list.
6. Enter the number or text itemand press OK to save it.
7. Press Back and then Exit toreturn to standby mode.

Search for a name in thephone book
1. Press Menu and select Contactsand Search.
2. You can key in the firstcharacters of the name you aresearching for in the pop-upwindow. Press and toscroll through the names in thelist, and and to move thecursor in the pop-up window.
Or, you can write in via the touchpad using the stylus, the firstcharacter(s) of the name you aresearching for and press Search.
3. Scroll to the name you want, andpress Details. Scroll to view thedetails of the selected name.
Tip: To quickly find a nameand phone number, pressor in standby mode. Key inthe first letter(s) of the name,and/or scroll to the name youwant.
Tip: To view a specific namewith its default number, press
and hold .
Edit a name, number or textitem
Search for the name (and number)you want to edit and press Details.Scroll to the name, number or textitem you want to edit, and pressOptions. Select Edit name, Editnumberor Edit detailto edit thename, number or text, then pressOK.
Delete names and numbers
Press Menu and select ContactsandDelete.
To delete names and numbersone by one, select One by oneand scroll to the name (andnumber) you want to delete.Press Delete and press OK to
confirm. To delete names and numbers in
the phone book all at once, selectDelete alland then scroll to thephone book, Phoneor SIM cardand press Delete. Press OK andconfirm with the security code.
Delete numbers or text itemsPress in standby mode, scroll tothe desired name (and number) andpress Details. Scroll to the numberor text item you want to delete,press Options and select Deletenumberor Delete detail,respectively.
