9:30 AM: Call to Order – Tammi

• Approval of Minutes from Sept 19th 2018 meeting – Darlene

• Election results and succession planning- Darlene

Election Results

• President- Paige Krabill

• VP Professional Development- James Stinchcomb

• Secretary- Donald Spears

• Advocacy Chair- Eveangel Hines

• VP Regional Development (appointed)- Steve Kashdan

• Ethics Chair (appointed)- Narketta Sparkman-KeyA Representative!

We

• President’s Report- Tammi Dice

o Give reports every time we meet – for the past year we have had a lot around getting Stacey up

to speed, reviewing bylaws, and how that will impact what we currently do – and how to move

forward.

o HS-BCP and CCE – investigating other alternatives.

No movement about our requests for CCE – to consider for continuing with us.

Our current credential has failed – taking it and passage rate – we have an almost flat

rate of utilization at this point.

o CCE wants to give it up– push it as an exit exam.

We were against it – it has not been normed as an exit exam.

Review of the Year- Board Member Updates

• Treasurer’s Financial Report – Jennifer

o Financial status

o Taxes

o Bank accounts

o Travel

Don’t have September financials yet – will email them out.

Biggest goal – work on a working budget – this is what we are doing in November –

considering – about regional budgets – working with the conference – tracking that

as well – membership – there is not enough detail with what we get

• Steve: agrees this is needed, we need to know more about our bottom line;

hard to parse out; need rate of renewals – which are new or old, when are

they do – what can we anticipate moving forward to create targets; this plays

into knowing what our monies are; how one plays into the other – regional

to national to link together.

• Jennifer – wants transparency – to plan

o These accounts changed to new bank – with good relationship

o Wells Fargo was charging us additional unnecessary fees

o Cheryl – director of finance – for the management company – she

took it upon herself to help us

o Process of payment for items – I don’t have a check book or card –

everything goes to Update – and then given to Jennifer for review.

o Stacey – gets invoices – and the NOHS address – more of a

process…send everything to the NOHS address – which allows for

checks and balances.

It is a 4 step process: Tammi (President); Stacey and Cheryl,

and an additional check within the organization.

o Lauri: 80k – last year – between two bank accounts

Franklyn got rid of an account – 40k and 40k, but the latest

statement in August TUA has 7k?

Nothing has been communicated to TUA or the TUA board.

If there was any comingling of TUA funds – to provide

documentation this should have been put in a NOHS account –

so that it is given a transparent picture of what is happening.

We are overpaying for services for the contract and are not

getting what we had agreed to. If I do not ask for a report –

we are not given a report.

 Lauri: no communication with Cheryl

o Kristin: suggest meeting with the Treasurers of the regions – to

understand the operating budgets of the regions – this would bring

clarity to do this.

o Jamie: when she was treasurer for the region all she got was a once a

year statement – like when a party pays their members – the region

should get a listing of how much comes to the regions.

o Franklyn: Heather Blevins as our AM – we had clear items in our

reports

• VP for Regional Development Report- Paige

o Regional Bylaws

Paige: understanding relationships between NOHS and regional organizations,

formalization, structures, and opportunities to get together

Try to begin to structure our policies and practices – to help us make decisions; she

attended regional conferences to learn more

We have drafts of regional bylaws – and captures a good process for regions

Page 4: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

Change language about how to work with the regions and continue to work through

– clarity is needed

• VP of Conferences Report- Pam

o Philadelphia Conference 2018 Update

o Budget Update

o Conference 2019

o Awesome review committee – the conference committee has been wonderful

Need more intentional for pre-conference board meetings – inserting the VP

conferences in – so that we can be tasked with things.

Attendees to date 179 == surpassed goal

Long term goals: I would like to see 20k members and 5k attendees at a

conference.

Need to send Board Member Bios and Picture … send this to Stacey.

• Attendees only – and then a couple of months see what you missed but a

save the date …

• VP of Public Relations Report- Jamie

o Sponsorship for conference

o Jamie: update sponsorship levels, include more social media strategies and have annual

options moving forward

o Formed a marketing committee – save the date – and two people who were interested in

support and joined the committee

o Jayni Harrison – and others – a group of 7

o We ended up with $13,500 – is good – and encouraged.

Our goal was $10k – so we surpassed the goal – it is going in the right direction –

hold on to existing partners and grow from there.

 Future ideas:

• Get publishers here?

• A mini job fair at the conference?

• Draw for the students and local employer…

• Support from the local community – and see about how they can aid us?

• Finding ways to tap into internship network as well as human services

programs nationally

• See about connecting with contacts in the region or conference area…

o Pam: wants to sit with a group to strategize – on how to do this for

the next conference in California.

o See about a discount for the local community

Page 5: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

Page 5:5

o If you attend one conference – regional – and then they get a

discount code for the national conference – this would be good.

• VP for Professional Development Report- Rikkisha

o Continuing Education Online Workshops

o CEUs

o Rikkisha: harder to get CEUs approvals; counseling CEUs you need to submit three months

before the event, therefore it becomes harder to do

o NASW is looser, but we end up paying a late fee; we are pushing back and asking for

resubmissions.

o Recording conference sessions – and make good webinars…

o Stacey: Will scan and send them to her to send out to others for NOHS

Need to submit a report – for how people rated the conference – and each session.

The sign in should be electronic – need to be able to read people’s email

announcement…

 Kristin:

• Concern about being pushed out from social work – and how does it

translate to the field – if the demand for social worker licensure – we are an

applied science – if we are defining ourselves at various levels – those

become valuable then programs become valuable –then we become more

marketable

• Marketing – we are an affiliate with APAHSA – we need to train people and

connect our affiliate – we need to be able to market to direct support

professionals

• Ed: recommends along with Steve – DSP…but James – needs to attack that

market – going to associate level

• Jennifer: APHSA to use them as a possible outlet for this – this is what they

are looking for – training those professionals – she went to their conference

in May – and saw the direct person on the ground floor –and if you tap into

that area – and become a feeder (Kristin)

• Paige: We have all the components for a professional organization, but as a

board we need to define who we are. We need to be able to define the field

• Steve: people in entry level – have no affiliation or identity with our

organization – this is one of the markets; we have human service educator

and they are not joining

Page 6: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

• Membership Chair Report- Ed and Tony

o Membership designation and website

o Publications

o Mass emails

o Print materials

Ed: started newsletter this year – Toni – quarterly newsletter

Something to be added, send him something about the regions and what is going on

with NOHS… grad assistants are helping us.

Stacey: made posters – to the educators – to take back to their schools – and post

them at your places of employment and schools

o NOHS – malpractice insurance for members

• He is seeking this out …

• Reconsideration of organizational membership – we need a clear definition

of what it is … (Ed/Franklyn)

• Social Media Chair Report- Yvonne

o Platforms

• Facebook – the one you don’t have to seek access to

• NOHS Facebook page – which should be front facing information sharing this

is one we should all be on

• We need to close the group page down – to eliminate confusion

• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs

o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our

ongoing efforts

Advocacy Chair Report- Diane

o Initiatives

Tammi for Diane: content directly linked to mission and code of ethics to strategize

the work we are doing

DACA and did a write up… we are supporters

Gun shooting in Florida – mainly because world social work network – that woman

reached out to me if we wanted to collaborate with them …

 Steve:

• When we have an advocacy statement – to be quick and have other people

vet it

• We need to be able to vet it to be careful when we act

• Wording issues that support the human experience as opposed to taking a

political stance – this is difficult.

• Stacey: careful about legislative information because you are a 501c3.

• Don: rather than sharing an opinion – use our efforts in advocacy to educate

people as to the consequence of potential legislation – do it from a visual

chart, ex.

Awards Chair Report- Radha

o 2018 awardees

• Ethics Chair Report- Nancy

• TUA Report- Lauri

o New chapters

o Number of members

o Award Recipients

• Publications Report

o Journal of Human Services- Kristy and Shawn

o HST Magazine- Rikkisha

Have the magazine – in the fall – the name changed this was the first edition

Stacey: is this something to collect all of the articles and get them approved to

committee – and actually have them put together

More sponsors… it supports the cause… we had no sponsors this time

What is expected to be in the document – not a peer reviewed journal – opinion

based – what is going on in the field… APHSA – talk about the macro they are doing

– they could have a section – let me know who the person is; they will always have a

page ...

 No hours – flat fee/to do this…

• Even if we could get a mock up to present to sponsors – if they know what it

looks like – then they may be willing to have a copy to show them.

• We need criteria

o If not a board member – then it can be a committee – for marketing

o Steve: This would be helpful – for consistency … parameters for

contributions.

• Update counter card – to promote NOHS

o Conference Proceedings- Bill

Tammi – he has not been in communication with the board

Pam will meet with him during the conference to determine his plans and next steps

• Regional Presidents’ Reports

o Western/Northwestern Regional Update- James Ruby

o No Report

o MWOHS Regional Update- Kristin Faix Wilkinson

o The board met 4 times this year

o Podcast series – the human services project – 3 different episodes and placed on website; a

fourth one in the process

o Created a video communication – on the state of the region on the website

o Created and disseminated our newsletter – new – and a job board as well.

o NEOHS Regional Update- Nicole Kras

o Going back and forth between MA and CT

o But no one has been wanting to host it – struggling with this.

o Do a combined – meeting half way between – hence the supra meeting for regions – I am

thinking to do an east coast regional – it is difficult

o MACHS Regional Update-Jannie Harris

o She has been working with North College. The board is at her disposal to get the conference

on track

o Cook book – for the region and push it at the conference … we will do a call for recipes

o Joining with another region?

o SOHS Regional Update- Steve Kashdan

o Should we have the regional conference once every other year?

o Albizu – connected to Puerto Rico – to get some action and connection with the island

 SOHS or MACHS…

• April – dates – middle to offer up more long form types of training – rather

than having shorter presentations.

• Market to the local community … dr. brava conference hosts – and have

providers there to appeal to them - -about membership.

• Board involvement in SOHS has been hard to get

o HAVE COMMITTEE TRAINING – ON SITE DURING THE CONFERENCE …

AT THE NATIONAL ONE TOO AS WELL AS OTHER REGIONAL

CONFERENCES. EX. MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID.

 Supra regional conference?

NOHS Infrastructure- Paige

• Paige:

Visual of the organizational design …

Procedures/process – helpful to see where we need to make changes to make work

more effective

• Without program description or guidance – people show up and are committed

and then we aren’t sure how to carry them out

o Current NOHS board:

 President

Page 9: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

 VP regional development

 Past president

 Treasurer

 Secretary

o Standing committees – per bylaws

 Ethics

 Advocacy

 Executive committees

o Proposal of a new structure

• According to what a good board should look like

• Have an executive committee

o Standing committee – where the work gets done

o Then the work takes place there and those recommendations come to

the board – you report and make approvals and the board votes/etc.

Quick observation: We have more buckets than people to do

work.

 Regional leadership:

• Lead: VP of regional development

• All chairs of regions to be on it – and talk about the things that are happening

• Sharing ideas

• Consolidating conferences, bylaw concerns

 Executive committee:

• President, VPs, Secretary, Treasurer, past president…

• If you have a governance committee do we need an executive committee?

• If the president vacates – the regional VP – becomes president

 Ad hoc committees:

• VP Marketing and Sponsorship

• Social media chair

o The management company – can take on that work

o Good time to evaluate what Jamie/Yvonne was doing – are these a

standing committee – or can this be done elsewhere?

o CONVERSATION:

Steve: the buckets are not discrete – need to be clear – who chairs what – things like

finances, publications, relations mix with one another

Human Services Framework: Building a new narrative

https://www.frameworksinstitute.org/human-services1.html

https://www.frameworksinstitute.org/toolkits/humanservices/

https://www.nationalassembly.org/initiatives/national-reframing-initiative/

Setting the stage for the upcoming year. Reflecting on what we want to accomplish next year based on the

mission/vision of the organization that we talked about Monday.

• Create a toolkit for regional boards, if we build regional membership it will grow NOHS

• Rather than regional conferences – doing something as a social change project in the community

• More diversification in the membership and representation from various areas of the field.

• Having an international contingency

• National versus to chapters across the state – nationals were the think tank for infrastructure, but the

chapters paid dues to finance this …

• A strategic plan for regional development

• WHO: what we are is what the world wants

• Target people with human services degrees …

• Letter of introduction … different organizations…

• Invitation letter for those who get their diploma – first year membership – and renew – a gift to them a

decreased membership

• NOTE: WE COME UP WITH AWESOME IDEAS, BUT WE NEED TO HAVE CONCRETE STRATEGIES.

Communication Strategy & Social Media Activity

Communication Strategy: Phase 1

Social Media: Telling our Story

o Goals for the 2018-2019 year until the next board meeting:

Create a vibrant membership and affiliate community

Define our professional identity as an organization

Develop an organization that is a leader in the field of human services

• Using the above to move toward an official strategic plan

Page 14: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

Page 14:14

[email protected] | www.nationalhumanservices.org

• We have a study – Ed – to put human services professional as a term that is

separate, and they have not done that. This may be another objective – they

have social services assistant – despite the research on it.

• The code is used universally – but this one change can improve opportunities for

our students – dictionary of occupational codes.

o Charges:

Keep these goals in mind when doing the work within committees

Keep the work focused on the purpose of the committees you are engaged with

Identify 1-2 goals that you can achieve in the next 12 months

o Plans of action for the board 2018-2019:

 Finalize the board structure

Set a plan for a strategic plan

• By the end of her term – that will be in place for Steve (VP for Regional

Development)…

NEED TO MARRY GOVERNANCE AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE – TOGETHER – AS PER STACEY AND

FRANKLYLN’S SUGGESTION.

STANDING COMMITTEE:

• Governance, finance, membership, publications, professional development, honor society, regional

leadership, ethics and advocacy

FOLLOW UP TASKS IN CONVERSATION WITH STACEY DURING ROUND ROBIN EXERCISE:

• Stacey – will be adding information about the removal and vacancy verbiage in bylaws

• Voting electronically – needs to be included in the bylaws.

• Have the bylaws as a pdf on the website, not a page

• Only 2/3 of the votes casted … not 2/3 of the votes… needs to be changed

• Could put a w-9 on the website – board documents if you would like a copy of policies, etc. please

contact Stacey – so that there is a vehicle for transparency.

• Awards – needs to be removed form conferences – needs to be put in policies.

• FOR ALL COMMITTEES/BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS – TO HAVE THE AGENDA AND MINUTES OF

SAID MEETINGS FORWARDED TO THE MANAGEMENT COMPANY AND THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE;

THEY WILL DETERMINE IF THE MINUTES OF THESE OTHER ITEMS WILL BE FORWARDED TO THE LARGER

BOD

ADVOCACY CHAIR:

• Develop a process by which to respond to current events… and make response statements

• Also make a plan of action of key items for engagement during the year

TUA:

• Possible inclusion of TUA – in the executive committee

Bylaws – watch when you are rolling this out – so that it is included – for the inclusion with taxes.

Page 15: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

Smaller entity to have agility for the board’s decisions – executive committee v governance committee

Stacey – can provide a listing of what these roles and limitations are for their scope of work and influence.

• Paige:

o What she has in mind – to share with the members of the executive committee

o Jenn in charge as chair, sec, tres, president, past president, and vp of regional development,

and am

o Board audit every couple of years

o We review governance and track data

o Propose agendas for the board meeting

o Plan annual board meeting and retreats/subcommittees – nominations, elections, onboarding,

ethics

• Executive committee meeting

o In your minutes – quorum – verify who was there – for what is needed

o Check boxes and lists of who is in the group – to confirm –

o Who is / not here – do we have quorum established –

o 50% +1…

This executive committee – can make limited times as to when they will make decisions.

But the board – has final authority

Everything is documented – note that an electronic vote happened

• Committee meetings - monthly

• Executive committee meeting – bimonthly

• Board meeting – full board quarterly

• Need to create a calendar – for follow up and putting items on the calendar.

• Need to have bylaws review – as initial work tasks

Page 16: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

2018-2019 Communication Strategy

As an organization we will accomplish the following

(A) Develop our brand at both as individual board members and as a national organization. What

do we want to be known for?

(B) Ensure that our organization has a communication strategy and a plan for how to

disseminate/share and keep membership informed

(C) Engage our board, committees and membership to create a vibrant and active organization

and NOHS community

(D) Expand visibility to the work of our leadership, committees, membership and HS

organizations

The goal of this plan is to lay out a set of goals and priorities to meet these higher-level initiatives and work

on innovate ways to engage with all relevant stakeholders. The plan will be broken out over three phases

that will begin in 2018 and end 2019.

GO

ALS

1. Create a strategy and plan to provide current, frequent and consistent information across

the organization.

2. Build community and increase engagement/connectedness within organization

3. Showcase our “brand” and thought leadership externally.

4. Develop our brand as a leading Human Services organization. Identify what we want to be

known for.

DAY 3

o Role of continuing education – diversifying funds

o Need to focus on marketing…

o Update management to help us to market

o We need employers to help us to market…

This can be an advocacy issue for the region – to market our brand and acceptance of

the profession with human services degrees.

o Department of Human Services and Department of Labor –

To get them to buy into the credential

Super local level – to our local community – get certain employers to accept this and

move up the chain of command… then build up.

This is the equivalent of …

APHSA – link with them – they are wanting education …

• Certified human services professional – rather than practitioner

• We can create this how we want

• Applied science – and a tiered level for education – a reason to grow in their

degree program

• WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO NOW?

o VIRTUAL –

Do we have the financial stability to make a decision …

 Stacey: Jennifer and money

• We do not have a full year of the financials – we have holes

• I think we need a contract drawn up

• And have Update vet the contract

• Can we build a mock up budget – for 2019 …

o We are in October

o This would be to start in another year …

o Conference is a revenue – I cannot build to know what we made off of

the conference.

o December 1 – financial plan – to see if we are in the ballpark to consider

the 12k for the credential

 2019 budget

 2020 a larger picture

o Legal counsel – buys us time to have us look at the contract from Update

Management.

We need to develop a strategic plan for rolling out the phases for the exam and

licensure.

• We need to have our own plan for doing this internal and external to the

organization to have benchmarks.

• Paige:

o We are asking the board for permission – that we are seeking a contract from Virtual regarding

the credentialing process – to determine how we move forward into Phase 1.

o Rikkisha – 1st; Laurie – second

o All in favor – motion passed.

o There is no risk at this time.

o We have DOI – Stacey

Tammi – October 31 – Wednesday – please send information/ inquiries to Tammi re:

this prospect

Later in the phases – we need to develop it – before we approach APHSA – as they will

help us market it esp. tiered exam

• TAMMI – REVIEW OF NOHS:

o Where we were – hard time to move hs as a field – and our relationships – include CSHSE.

o Things are turning around for the better.

o Theme: Phoenix from the ashes …

Finalize legal dispute with old M

Hired new AM; they are aware of our resistance and traumatized

Page 21: NOHS Board Retreat and Annual Meeting October 21-24, 2018...• Twitter – good for real time shout-outs o Need to develop a Twitter presence that reminds followers of our ongoing

 Checks and balance; transparency

• Nicole from CSHSE – very aware of experience first-hand

A board without AM – the BOD ran the show – moving finances in order, website

accurate, membership streamlined, conference manager, change the link to human

services today magazine – first edition, conference proceedings, journal – coming out;

webinar will be coming out in November (ed)…

Paige has undertaking to restructure our infrastructure – our splan and bylaws – need

organizational manuals – having the transition and onboarding be more fluid.

 Credential:

• You were all aware of the HS-BCP (CCE) – stop offering the credential only as an

exit exam for institutions.

• 8 months to make it happen – to continue the credential…

• However in the end – it was decided to end the relation.

• CSHSE – were in agreement – but when the meeting happened - -it was going to

be paused for 5 yrs to collect data – as an exit exam for institutions.

• It was not normed as an exit exam – work study analysis – not normed on the

CSHSE standards – how can you use this for that.

o Work study analysis is out of date – and they were not going to do

another one

o Test normed for BA and those taking it are at the AA level

o Those who could pass it – were not interested in getting the credential –

we needed a leveled credential

o They were not profiting….

• Her follow up – to determine end date – and manage those who have it –

communication to them -- and those in the pipeline; close it out with the

contract.

o We can’t use the term in the future – or the exam.

o Got back – him and haw – no follow up from them.

• Other options:

o Vetting other companies and resources – doing it on our own – or out of

an educational institution/continuing education – hiring a consultant – to

doing it with a full new company.

o Pros/cons…

o Virtual – really robust proposal

 Bigger company, world wide

Have infrastructure and good rating; accredited

• Phased process – work study analysis – have

psychometrician – content experts – shawn and tammi

(for HS-BCP)

• Format not preferred route for credentialing exams – to

do it in a different manner

• We would like to collaborate with CS-HSE – not monetary

– the collective commitment to move toward investing a

credential we all back.

• We need this for the field … we don’t have 5 years to

wait…

• Shifted from 20 yrs ago – far fewer programs – and now

plethora of human services…

• Advocacy for the field and the credential… state and

national levels …

NOHS / CSHSE Dinner Meeting

• Elaine -- CSHSE

o Mission and vision revision

o Revised by laws – previously been on executive committee and regional directors

o The regions – did not match up – they created problems –

Expertise on the board – revise bylaws – members at large

When we were seeking members – we would look for identifying people with skill sets –

Most programs are 2 yr programs –

 Have board reflect this

Many programs are online or multiple site

Infuse cultural competency on our standards – one specific standard –on this would be

addressed on multiple levels

Associate level standards – member conversations, surveys, walked through each

standard – to clarify revision

• Took to BA standards revised board manual and member handbook

• New website – revised content

o Struggle – what is the benefit for membership – rather than public access

to information

o Have additional features – less wordy and redundancy

o Looking at graduate standards – it is distinct – philosophical statement –

what do we want in a program …

o Core components – getting the word out to look at them for feedback

Looking for people to be a self-study readers –

• We have 34 – readers – including board members

• But when you have 50 accredited programs …

• At least 3 people assign to every self-study plus a consultant it is a lot.

o Out of 100 members we had 49 who voted…

o Welcoming Karen, Nicole, and Julia to the board

o Working with CHIA – they have changed their standards – so now we

have to align ours to fit with them

Inquiry re: collaboration:

• I see close collaboration with credential and looking at philosophy and mission with each of those

standards … which aligns with the skills for employers’ expectations – KSAOCs.

• We did it backwards … I can see information you are researching to combine with what we are doing

• We are very open – to setting a phone call – to keep in touch – to move forward

• How often do you meet face-to-face …

o We are working standing committees – and ad hoc

o Make time to speak and engage periodically – you know your work

We have a meeting in February – re: reaccreditation … we will also do other business

Then we meet in June – to come together physically.

Then we meet again – prior to the conference.

Tammi will continue to keep Elaine informed … to have content matter experts – have

CSHSE folks be a part of the process…

We can bring different things – esp. for the standards….

• Collaboration on the advocacy piece – are interested in this as well.

• Going forward more than hour together –

o We have been meeting – since Sunday …

o Anaheim, California – and time for Disneyland.

o Having a joint meeting – before the conference of both groups – more

than just a lunch but a working meeting.

• Gratitude for their faith in us – and resilience and commitment to the field.

• We need each other and the world needs us…
