What is the design thinking? ---A study on the model of design thinking process based on the Vigotsky’s “thinking unit” theory Noguchi Hisataka Abstract: Russian psychologist Vigotsky proposed that human thinking uses a medium between subject and object. Based on his theory, the author tried to make a theoretical model of design thinking in expecting it could devote to design research. The author asserts that design thinking is a typical human problem solving style by making tools as means for solving the problem. Design thinking can be seen as “pre-doing” part of this type of problem solving. From this viewpoint, core of design thinking is searching process for new means that has suitable function to meet the goal. The design thinking is composed of trial-and-error representation process in which the search is proceeded by repetitive expression of subject’s inner image to an externalized form of means to be able to recognize and/or verify it. The creative thinking appears in the searching process. It is, however, put in paradox that, in spite of it is in focused goal-oriented thinking, it needs widened search space to make divergent thinking. In that situation an external stimuli can let the searching space wider, because the external world is always larger than the subject’s internal world. Designer’s sketch is a part of the externalized world and sometimes it also can be an external stimulus. Proposed model can explain those features of design thinking. Noguchi Hisataka Abstract: Russian psychologist Vigotsky proposed that human

thinking uses a medium between subject and object. Based on his

theory, the author tried to make a theoretical model of design

thinking in expecting it could devote to design research. The author asserts that design thinking is a typical human

problem solving style by making tools as means for solving the

problem. Design thinking can be seen as “pre-doing” part of this

type of problem solving. From this viewpoint, core of design

thinking is searching process for new means that has suitable

function to meet the goal. The design thinking is composed of

trial-and-error representation process in which the search is

proceeded by repetitive expression of subject’s inner image to an

externalized form of means to be able to recognize and/or verify

it. The creative thinking appears in the searching process. It is,

however, put in paradox that, in spite of it is in focused

goal-oriented thinking, it needs widened search space to make

divergent thinking. In that situation an external stimuli can let the

searching space wider, because the external world is always

larger than the subject’s internal world. Designer’s sketch is a

part of the externalized world and sometimes it also can be an

external stimulus.

Proposed model can explain those features of design thinking.
