Bashamichi is one of the most important areas of eastern Japan. A vital port and customs area for American ships post-Edo period and during the war, it was named after horse-drawn carts ridden by wealthy foreigners and has become synonymous with affluence, sophistication and cosmopolitanism. The port opened in the 1850s and Bashamichi was used for consulates, immigration and customs. It was the location of the first gas lamps, ice cream, and a major gateway for foreign culture into Japan. Because of its rich history, the area is a bustling city center with upscale shops and beautiful architecture – a must-see for history and architecture buffs alike. Once described as “the city’s soul” by author Burritt Sabin, this neighborhood is situated in the literal and figurative heart of Yokohama. Unlike some areas of the city, Noge retains its romantic sense of nostalgia as it has remained virtually untouched in terms of large reconstruction for the last 60-70 years. It started as a black market with a slogan of “You can get anything in Noge”. Jazz also found a home in Noge, partly thanks to Chigusa, the oldest jazz café in Japan being here. The music genre’s influence still holds strong here, with jazz events held several times a year.Noge Hondori Shotengai http://nogehondoorikai.com/index.html

Isezaki Mall stretches out over an impressive 1.2km divided into seven blocks and features a blend of both old and new. Yurindo bookshop’s flagship store is located here, as well as confectionary maker Fujiya’s second shop (the first one no longer exists), and several trendy cafes, amusement arcades, bars, and more. The area prides itself both on its long history – the shotengai dates to 1874, as do some of the shops – as well as its dedication to new stores, events, and campaigns. There are around 250 events a year, including summer festivals and winter illuminations, as well as concerts and street performances.Isezaki Mall 1.2 St. http://www.isezaki.jp/Isezakicho Shotengai http://www.isezakicho.or.jp/

A chic and sophisticated shopping district with a European feel, Motomachi is a five block-long stretch of boutiques, shops, cafés and restaurants that attracts customers from all over. A stone’s throw from Chinatown, the area is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and for creating one of the most popular fashion styles of the 1970s and 80s: the “hamatora” (short for Yokohama traditional). Mihama, Kitamura and Fukuzo were the three stores that led the trend, and all three are still going strong today. Nowadays, the street prides itself on its artistic feel and presence of mostly small, individually-owned shops instead of large chain stores.Motomachi Shopping Street http://www.motomachi.or.jp/en/Motomachi Craftmanship Streets http://www.motomachi-cs.com/

Ishikawacho is conveniently located close to many popular tourist destinations in the city, including Motomachi , Chukagai (Yokohama’s Chinatown) and Yamashita Park, a beautiful green space along the waterfront. However, it would be a mistake to just pass through without checking out a few places along on the way. Ishikawacho has put a lot of time and effort into creating an open community setting and it shows. The streets have been widened for better accessibility, and its many annual events have proven popular. This area’s eclectic mix of artistic stores and trendy eateries makes it a must-see destination at any time of the year.Hiragana Shotengai http://www.hiraganashoutengai.net/, Ishikawa Shotengai http://www.i-canalstreet.jp/, Ishikawacho Hiragana Shotengai West Avenue https://www.facebook.com/hiraganaWESTAVENUE/,

Named for New York's high fashion quarter Fifth Avenue, this shopping street is as "deep Yokohama" as you can get. Formerly a nightlife-only area with cabaret clubs, seedy bars, and dance halls, Nishiguchi Gobangai is now a family-friendly location with a plethora of great restaurants and a wide variety of shops. The area even has stores selling hard-to-find retro games and vintage magazines. Fashionistas may enjoy hunting for rare treasures at a second hand clothing store or finding the perfect fit at a historic custom suit shop. Whatever your taste in food, fashion or culture, Nishiguchi Gobangai has something for everyone.Yokohama Eki Nishiguchi Gobangai Shotengai http://www.yokohama-5bangai.com/wordpress/

Nestled between the districts of Noge and Isezakicho, Yoshidamachi is a bustling drinking street chockablock full of bars. It’s not a particularly long street, measuring just 250 meters, however it counts an impressive 35 bars and drinking emporiums. It’s not a fancy affair – in fact it might be labeled gritty by some – but the realness of the street is one of its major charms. There are many unique little shops and bars, including a magic bar where you can witness top-class magic tricks while sipping on a pint. These are just some of the many fascinating treats you’ll find here.Yoshidamachi Meitengai-kai http://www.yoshidamachi.org/

Rebranded Honmoku Ribbon Fun Street some time ago, its name includes “ribbon” because it’s a symbol of intertwining and harmony between residents and visitors. It’s another important area in terms of Yokohama’s history as Honmoku used to be the location of a huge American military base. In fact, the base area is still named as “America-zaka entrance” to this day. Now it’s a melting pot of good food, with eateries ranging from Chinese cuisine, American hamburgers and Japanese soba and udon. This mishmash of cultures, good food, and great shopping is a great place to see remnants of modern history in the now.Honmoku Ribbon Fun Street Shotenkai http://www.honmoku-street.com/

Located in Totsuka ward south of Yokohama is an area popular among visitors who want insight into what life in Japan is really like. The Totsuka Station East shotenkai (that’s shotenkai for “shopping organization,” not shotengai, which means “shopping street”) is a group of business owners spread out through various parts of the city. You'll find everything from a traditional style bakery that has served the local community for over 20 years, to a wrapping shop that carries stationery as well as bento boxes and festival accessories — all for a bargain price. The wide variety of locales in this shotenkai makes exploring Totsuka an adventure.Totsuka Station East Shotenkai http://e-totsuka.info/

This little nook of “old” Yokohama hides nostalgic treasures you’ll be hard pressed to find elsewhere in Japan. In the covered Nakamise street of this shopping area you’ll find grocery shops, kimono-sellers, stylish cafés – and even shops selling geta (Japanese clogs) and zori (Japanese sandals). Originally, samurai used this plot of land as a gateway to Kozukue Castle back in the 1400s. Now, it’s a vibrant shopping district with unique events, like the “Dokkiri yami-ichi ”, which means “startling black market”. Held every third Saturday of the month from spring to autumn, (except for August), it features swapping and sale events, street performances, and more. Dating back 70 years, this retro shopping arcade boasts about 100 to 130 stores and is set up like a magician’s slow reveal, finishing 300 meters later with the pure majesty of Gumyoji Temple. The main hall is said to date back to 1044 and adds a sense of serenity to this otherwise bustling area. The temple is not Gumyoji’s only distinctive feature as a river runs through it – in fact, it’s the only shotengai in the country with one. This unique shotengai has its fair share of interesting shops, great bars and restaurants, and offers an aesthetically pleasing experience.Yokohama Gumyoji Shotengai http://www.gumyouji-shoutengai.com/
