Governmentannounces Universitywill open in 2015

At a press conference heldtoday at Number SixConvent Place Gibraltar, theChief Minister FabianPicardo and Minister forEducation Gilbert Licudiformally launched plans forthe establishment of theUniversity of Gibraltar.

The University which will belocated at Europa PointGibraltar is set to open forbusiness on 1st September2015.he University will have fourfaculties namely,

Health Studies and SportsScienceBusinessLife and Earth Sciences andGibraltar/MediterraneanStudiesTourism and Hospitality

The Government ofGibraltar have also been intalks with other universitiesand will be looking to signMOUs with other

universities. Already anMOU has been signed withthe University of theSeychelles. It has also heldtalks with the GibraltarFootball Association andUEFA with a view ofdeveloping courses inrelation to Sports Sciencewhich could be housedwithin the proposed newstadium planned for EuropaPoint and work inconjunction withdevelopment projects to beundertaken by theassociation as a member ofUEFA.

The University of Gibraltarplans to haveaccommodation for studentsfrom abroad and will start itsmarketing for places andjobs with a view to start itscourse in 2015.

The plans for the Universityhave been tabled withconsideration of theproposals for a footballstadium in the same areaand will see therefurbishment of various keysites at Europa Point toaccommodate the Universityand its residential facilities.

30 Macaques will live inScotland

Gibraltar – 9th October2014 – Thirty Macaques,better known asGibraltar’s Barbary apes,will be transported to azoo in Stirling Scotlandnext week as part of aprogramme implementedby the GibraltarGovernment to stop thespread of urbanisedapes across Gibraltar’scity centre.At a press conferenceheld at the WessexLounge at theInternational AirportGovernment MinisterJohn Cortes announcedthat the thirty apes hadbeen captured and heldin safe areas as theywere being prepared tobe transported toBlairdrummond WildlifePark in Stirling onTuesday 14th October2014. The apes weretrapped with minimaldisruption during the

past month.The relocation, is part ofthe GibraltarGovernment’s wideBarbary macaquesmanagement plan whichcounts on a number ofkey measures such asincreased humanresources andawareness. TheMacaques wereidentified at one of agroup of at least 160apes roaming Gibraltar.The group wasmonitored and observedto be the largest packentering urban areas,crisscrossing betweenareas as far apart asCatalan bay to LagunaEstate and the main citycentre.During the pressconference the Ministerfor the Environment JohnCortes called on the co-operation of the public toensure that apes werenot fed in urban areas soas not to attract them inthese areas.

A cosmopolitan societyagainst the wishes of atreaty

As Gibraltar’s case isbrought before the UnitedNations by Gibraltar’s ChiefMinister, one moment intime, in a small street withinthe city centre, aptly namedIrish Town -the nationagainst which Gibraltar playsthis weekend in its secondqualifier match, againstSpain’s desires- highlightshow a treaty created in the1700’s has little semblanceof today’s reality. Jews,Muslims, Hindus, Catholics,Protestants and many otherreligions mix in harmony asone cosmopolitan society,even though the same treatyprohibits it in its written text.



Spanish and Gibraltar Police speakabout mutual respect with Eurocop

Gibraltar – 9th October 2014 – AnnaNellberg, President of the EuropeanConfederation of Police, Eurocop todaymet at the Atlas Conference room onthe Sunborn Hotel in Gibraltar withrepresentatives from federationsrepresenting officers from The RoyalGibraltar Police, Gibraltar DefencePolice, Spanish Guardia Civil andSpanish Police.

In the first meeting held todaydiscussions centred on Gibraltar’sproposed application into the EuropeanConfederation. In what is a majormilestone for both Spanish andGibraltar enforcement agencies, themeeting allowed discussions to openbetween both sides in relation to keyoperating issues to create a forum forbetter understanding between bothsides.

During press conferencerepresentatives of each federationhighlighted that the key issuesdiscussed, and agreed upon were

formulas for better understanding,mutual respect and co-operation at anenforcement level which would allowofficers to operate in a safeenvironment in what they described asa situation of “very high tensions.”Further discussions are expected withall sides agreeing that dialogue will beopened between the correspondingfederations to provide a betterenvironment for their officers andcitizens.

The discussions took place at a timewhen political tensions over issuesrelating to Gibraltar’s sovereignty are attheir highest in recent years, withcontinued confrontations, especially inthe maritime sector, seen on a dailybasis as political tensions influenceoperational decisions.

The European Confederation of Police,EuroCOP, serves as the voice ofEuropean police officers in Europe. Itrepresents over half a million officers in27 European countries dealing withissues ranging from cross-border policecooperation to a safer workingenvironment for police officers on the

street.

The meeting was the first time allparties have sat down to discusspolicing issues at a confederation level.Gibraltar’s application to Eurocop isexpected to be raised at the nextconfederation council meeting wheremembers will be asked to vote onGibraltar’s entry.

During the press conference RamonRodriguez Mendez, representing theSpanish Guardia Civil union revealed athird Spanish enforcement agencyconfederation had been invited andhad refused to attend, stating “theydon’t deserve our attention if they donot wish to be present at thediscussions on opening dialogue.”

True Heroes Honoured

Once again the MayorsAward honoured true civilianheroes who risked their livesto rescue a woman. TwoSpanish workers were todaythe first to receive theirawards at the City Hall byMayor Adolfo Canepa. Thetwo Spanish workers hadearlier this year run into ablazing flat at Varyl Beggafter they were alerted to afire within the same flat andthe possibility that someonewas still inside.

The two workers run into theblazing smoke filled, blazingflat and pulled out a localwoman who had beensleeping in her flat and wasnot aware of the fire.

Young dancers perform toraise funds

Once again the Piazza sawa dance group holding theirfundraising events byproviding the public with theirperformances.

This time it was the turn ofthe young Stylos Dancegroup held a cake stall andraffle at the same time asshowing the public theirtalents.

The Re-enactment Societymarched to the Piazza thisSaturday pulling along theirunique, custom made,replica canon. At the doorsto the City Hall, just like youwould expect in the oldendays, the soldiers marchedinto the Mayors Parlour,where they were awardedone of the Mayors Awardsfor their continued promotionof Gibraltar every weekend.

Close to a thousand peoplerun, many walked, throughthe streets of Gibraltarcelebrating Think Pink Dayin aid of Cancer research.The annual event has grownin popularity during theyears, this Saturday was nodifferent with people from allwalks of life includingMinisters joining in.
