Hi Folks! Well, we’re on the cusp of a new year for the Hawaii Yacht Club! The
countdown has already started, as members start to consider their
elective choices for club Officers and Governors in November. There
will be a spate of new members running for office this year, and they
will bring considerable skills and talents with them. In any political
season, there’s always someone claiming to be the frontrunner for
“change.” Well, there definitely have been many changes which have
occurred at our club during the past year without anyone really trying.
No, most of these changes have not been joyous, but it seems that
as soon as someone walks out, two others walk in and ask if they
can help. That is the beauty of this club. I would like to point out
those who have stepped forward when the club needed them, and
the positions that they have undertaken during 2010:
Staff Commodore Al Bento, Vice Commodore Charles Barclay,
Governor Beth Malvestiti, Governor Howie Mednick, By-laws Chair
Janet Mandrell, and Membership Chair Carl Geringer.
Others, such as Robbie Santanello are already motivated, and
keeps bringing new members into the club, and along with George
Longshore, displays a burning desire in repairing the Aloha Dock, as
they continue to do today. These volunteers all stepped into their
positions when they were needed, and immediately took up the
tasks that were necessary to be done. It was soon thereafter, that
I realized that “I Had Struck Gold!” and proclaimed it at the July
Membership meeting. It was impossible to keep these members
down, and a pleasure to hear their fresh new ideas as to how they
could help our club.
Carl Geringer, Membership Chair, came up with unprecedented
ideas as to rewriting the by-laws to update membership categories to
encourage younger members to remain in the club through affordable
payments over time, to fix the scourge of many yacht clubs, “an age
gap.” He also came up with an International membership category,
and an “honorary” membership which supports the sport of sailing,
and setting up our own HYC Sailing/Boating Foundation that would
allow Club members to make tax deductible donations to the
foundation, as well as lifetime giving and planning so that members
could remember the Foundation through wills or charitable trusts or
foundations.
Recently, when our General Manager resigned from the job, offers
of assistance immediately flowed in from many members who
volunteered to help, and resumes soon followed from the public
sector from those who had experience in managing an office, and at
least one of whom had managed a Yacht Club. Office employees,
Mey, and Jerry Opiopio have continued their hard work within the
office and have mitigated the effect of the General Manager’s leaving.
The only avenue which had not been explored, Management by
Committee, was that which had been utilized by our club for about
90 years, up until about 8 years ago when our General Manager
had been hired. I approached Staff Commodore Pete Richards and
asked if he would be willing to organize an ad hoc committee to look
into the feasibility of the club being managed as it had ten years
ago. He agreed to do so, and that study is going on at this time and
awaiting a report from the committee. At any rate, the oncoming
Commodore will probably be making the decision as to how our club
will be managed.
Staff Commodore Al Bento has also volunteered to take a lion’s
share of the club’s current workload by becoming the go-to man
if our alarm system goes off in the middle of the night or day. He
was also assigned to seek out a suitable company to properly set
up our galley’s fire suppression system which was aimed off-kilter
when a new stove was put in earlier in the year, thereby necessitating
adjusting of the fire suppression pipes. Governor Beth Malvestiti,
our Treasurer, has also been “Johnny on the spot” in keeping an
eye on our financials, and is also a member of Pete Richard’s adhoc
Feasibility Committee.
As we move into the month of November, and towards a new year, I
can see that our membership numbers are growing with an increase
in monthly recruitment, and positivity of our membership. I do know
that great things will be happening for our club because of the work
that has already been done.
Aloha,

Aloha members,
Oktoberfest was a great success. Over 60 dinners were
sold and more than 100 members came to HYC to listen to
the Zickyzacke band, sample bratwurst, wienersnitzel, apple
streudel, and Spaten beer. Chicken Dance. Antje Gruenewald
and Mitch Burns worked hard organizing Oktoberfest, and
Chef Lee and staff made the meal. Danke Schoen for all your
hard work.
Halloween weekend is coming up. There will be a boat
decorating contest with black and orange cubies for the best
dressed boat and crew. The band will be Johnny Rock Society.
Saturday will be party night with costume prizes, pumpkin
carving, apple dunking, and music by Inflight.
We flew to visit family in Pennsylvania and New Jersey’s
Barnegat Bay in October. Hamilton picked out a boat at
Philadelphia’s Seaport Museum, while Lauren picked up a
copy of Aesop’s Fables and read stories in the car.
We raced in the Bay Head Yacht Club’s Fall Series. Lauren,
Hamilton and I crewed for my father. Three generations of
Barclay’s racing on the same boat usually spells trouble! Carol
raced on a Sandpiper (refusing to race against Grandpa). Dad
is an experienced member of the BBYRA Sanderling Fleet. In
his mid 70’s, with ailing knees, he is still competitive and in a
tight race for the series lead. His boat, named Catspurr, is sail
#BH12.
With a crystal clear sky and an oscillating 8-12 knot north
westerly breeze it was a perfect fall day. Race committee sent
boats up, down, across the river, back again and then to the
leeward mark (they have 12 fixed buoys and 80 fixed courses
for every wind direction).
Grandpa started well. We worked the shifts, tacking on headers,
hiked and to leeward during lulls, and played peak and throat
halyards to change draft and leech tension on the gaff main.
We rounded the mark first and extended our lead each leg. On
the last downwind leg we looked past the committee boat and
saw glassy water between us and the leeward mark. There
was a convergence zone between the softening northwest and
southeast sea breezes. I told Dad, “this will get ugly”.
Race committee could have shortened course, but the PRO
did nothing.
Two classes compressed at the leeward mark. We exchanged
first for third, then fourth and then back to first within fifty yards
of the mark. Power boat wakes made us wallow. Boats were
headed in every direction with no steerage. We drifted with the
current. Then one by one each caught personal zephyrs and
marched to the finish. It was a disappointing fifth on BH12. At
the bar, no one, not even the winners, liked the race that day.
The moral of the story is sometimes well-meaning individuals,
even volunteers, fail to do the right thing and it diminishes the
experience for others. As volunteers we must strive always to
do the right thing for the Club.
Elections are upon us. Your vote counts. Do the candidates
have a record of doing the right thing? Do they listen? Do
they follow HYC Bylaws or make up their own? Do they have
the fortitude to execute tough actions? How long does it take
them to recognize an error, and how quickly do they correct
it? Can they be pleasant to all or have a ‘damn my opponents’
approach?
We all make mistakes. The question is do we learn and move
on to solve the big problem or just the manini ones?

September was a great month of sailing at HYC. It brought the “manliest” event of the year, which is currently the longest race in the islands at 102 miles. The Holoholo is a non-stop around Oahu race and was won this year by Scott Bradley’s “CaZan”. The long battle between the 3 boats ended at 0530 on Sunday morning after light conditions around the island.
Results:CaZan – 05:26:45, WestHeartbeat – 05:53:44, WestPrima Donna – DNF, East
On October 16 and 17 the Lipton II One Design was held at Kaneohe Yacht Club. For the first time in 14 years Kaneohe Yacht Club was not able to fend off the fierce competition of Waikiki Yacht Club’s Fuzz Foster and Mike Rothwell (also an HYC member). The regatta fielded 9 teams from around the state and had excellent weather and wind (12-15kts).
Hawaii Yacht Club placed 6th in this year’s competition with Jimmy Fowler - skipper and Phillip Katzman – crew.

November 7th will be host to the Pau Regatta. This is the last regatta for HYC in 2010. It will be a Wahine big boat race. Calling ALL Wahine! Get out there and sail and/or skipper a boat!

The Duke Kahanamoku Laser and El Toro Regatta was held on October 2 with a large fleet of boats sailing off of Waikiki. Ted Miller did a great job as race committee and Ailana Warren was a great safety boat driver. Alicia Ward sailed a laser and was happy that she sailed all five races. It is always great to see the el toros sailing offshore and the racing sails make it a real challenge.
The Kaneohe Youth Sailing Invitational was held on Oct 16 with winds of 8-10 knots. Five races were held for the sailors with windward/leeward courses of about 12 minutes each. Sailing for HYC were Malia Selman, Taylor Freitas, Alicia Ward, Kukii Falahee, Morgan Merrill, and Dylan Adolpho. It was Taylor’s first regatta and she placed 2nd in El Toro C4. The Jamba Juice gift cards for the prizes were a big hit.
The high school sailing class on Tuesday/Thursdays is made up of 20 sailors and most are from Sacred Hearts Academy. Coach William Plourde and his staff bring the sailors down to the club to sail Toppers and 420s. It is great to see the Topper sailors learning the skills and the 420 sailors are practicing their racing skills. Thanks to assistants Alyssa Tenn and Justine Tenn for their help with the sailors, they are both Sacred Hearts alumni and Alyssa is on the University of Hawaii Sailing Team.
SEAFEST, a fundraiser for the Hawaii Sailing Foundation will be held November 6 at the Waikiki Yacht Club. There will be an auction and there are lots of great items available. Tickets are $15 and will go towards helping local sailors travel to the Mainland for regattas.
Mid-Pacific Institute sailor Morgan Merrill will be headed to the High School Sailing Single Handed Nationals on October 30 and 31 in St Petersburg Fl. He will be sailing the Laser among some of the best sailors from around the country. Check out his event at www.highschoolsailingusa.org.
The Imu Regatta, a high school regatta for all high school sailors will be held on November 27/28 at Keehi Lagoon. It will be sailed in Flying Juniors and there are teams expected from the Mainland. Check with your high school coach for registration info.
The Hawaii Yacht Racing Association Banquet will be on November 20 and the awards for the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association Seasons Points will be awarded. It will be a fun evening and a must attend for all sailors.

Phillip Katzman
Aloha Racers!
Cruising & Voyaging• Patti Salomon
We at the Cruising & Voyaging Society have a
fondness for getting together, whatever the reason.
In October our excuse was a Pot Luck BBQ hosted
by Dave & Leslie Moore at their home in Kailua, to
mark the end of summer. So we made a “Land
Cruise”, over the Pali and into the wilds of Kailua
Town for some good food and good conversation,
all in the company of our fellow cruisers.
As we started our drive over the hill the rain was
pouring as it often does, and it looked like the
weather was going to turn against us. But as
we drove out of the tunnel we were pleasantly
surprised to see dry roads, just a little overcast
and some soft breezes to keep us cool. Leslie
& Dave are terrific hosts, opening their home to
approximately 30 cruisers. They provided the
BBQ Grill and Baby Back Ribs, and Dave once
again made his “Killer” Mai Tais for any who
wished to imbibe. Richard Shilla contributed fresh
fish, some of the 30# Ono he caught recently.
Richard and Ed Abbot manned the grill for the
hungry group, with plenty of “advice” and input
from other gentlemen in the group. Cooking over
an open fire is a guy thing, you know.
The tables groaned with good food. We started
out with pupus; sushi, chips & hummus, cheese
& crackers, lumpia, and more. And of course
there was the wine & Mai Tais to add to the festive
mood. Then we dined on the grilled fish, ribs,
& shrimp, fruit salad, green salad, potato salad,
baked beans, chicken wings, apples & sausages,
stew, deviled eggs, …so much food, so little time!
And for dessert we had Cheesecake Bites, and an
authentic Flan made for us by Lury & Jim Ripley,
which disappeared very quickly!
It was a lovely evening with a relaxed atmosphere,
and the conversation flowed. It’s a great venue
to catch up with other members. Glen Pang
amazed and confounded us with a rope trick.
Even Leslie’s dog Harley had a good time, getting
lots of attention and snagging fallen treats from
under the feet of the partyers. We drank a toast
to the group and gossiped about members not in
attendance! So if you missed it, your ears might
have been burning. As the light faded we gathered
our “pots”, thanked our hosts for a lovely party
and ‘sailed” our cars off toward home, filled with
the warm glow of camaraderie that comes from
spending time with our fellow cruisers. (Or could
it have been the Mai Tais?) In any case, we look
forward to our next gathering.
If this sounds like fun, consider joining us. We
meet at 6:00 pm on the 3rd Wednesday of each
month, HYC Lower Deck. We also get together
at 9:30 am on the first Sunday of the month for
breakfast at the HYC Galley. All are welcome.
Check our web site at hyccrusingsociety.com .
Respectfully submitted,
Patti Salomon

We are adding new members each month, and the
quality of our new membership is outstanding!
New Members:
During the October board meeting, the following
new member applications were approved after
being posted for 30 days:
Jeff and Jean Lilley - They are no stranges
to taking bit bites of life or jumping in at the
deep end of the pool. Initally learning on a
friend’s Columbia 34, they honed their skils in
the challenging wind conditions of Lake Perry,
Kansas. They are sponsored by Janet Mandrell
and Diane Cummings.
Craig Fletcher - From Newport Beach, California,
Craig has long visited the Hawaii Yacht Club and
has raced Transpac many times. Craig likes
what Hawaii Yacht Club has to offer, and in the
past was often a visiting guest. He is sponsored
by Tim Ryan and Sterling Lau.
John Cruz - John and Ivy met in Hawaii 15 years
ago,,, on John’s last trip to the Islands. Since
that voyage they’ve cruised back to the mainland,
explored Mexico and Latin America, and the US
Eastern Seaboard. They’ve just covered the
5,200 miles from Panama City reach Honolulu
aboard Ruby Slippers their custom Stevens 47’
sailboat. Their sponsors are Ray Heitzman and
Robbie Santanello.
Hopefully all of the new members will be able
to attend the membership meeting on October
19th.
In December I will be presenting to the Board a
list of annual honorary memberships for 2011 to
be voted upon at the meeting. These would be
for those individuals that are not members, but
that contribute continuously in developing sailing
in Hawaii at our schools, and those individuals in
our community that we would like to recognize for
their years of support. We hope that eventually
they will choose to become regular members,
but we want to open our doors more for them
to encourage them to continue to support our
Club.
Mitch Burns and I are working on the not-for profit
arm which would allow tax deductible donations
to be made to support our sailing, fishing, and
boating activities. Hank Mulligan has kindly
offered to work with us in implementing this
idea.
I am awaiting for the by-laws committee to bring
the by-law change language to the Board for
action regarding membership issues which I
previously discussed with you.
I will keep you posted on the progress but we are
making progress in all areas. In closing, I want
everyone to give their aloha to the new members,
but also thank those sponsors above that are
helping to bring a bright future to the Club with
these excellent new members.

Aloha,
Over the past 4 years myself, my wife Johanna, and Joseph and Christin Shacat have been heavily
involved with running the Offshore Sailing program at HYC. We have taken great pride in getting to know so many members and sharing experiences together. With this club experience I am now ready to server as your next Commodore. I understand the vigilant effort it takes to run a business as I have run my IT Consulting company in Honolulu for the past 3 years and have provided consulting
services long before that. I have personal connections with many prominent and long time members and I wish to strengthen these ties and build new relationships as well. As Commodore I want to define and set forth long term goals objectives for the club. This is imperative to the clubs survival and profitability. Too often lately have I seen a divide in the membership. We must re-unite the Hawaii Yacht Club and it’s members to build a bigger and stronger Hawaii Yacht Club.

Charles barclayAloha! As a member of Hawaii Yacht Club since 1998, I have had the pleasure to serve as a
Flag Officer three times, most recently as Vice Commodore. In my career, I have been a banker, a salesman, an educator, a certified quality management practitioner, and turned around a business or two along the way. In my discussions with members I think we share a desire for a certain type of leadership. You want demonstrated leadership both on and off the water. You want assurance that the
Constitution, bylaws and standing rules are followed by everyone. You want transparent, honest and effective status reports on the condition of the Club. You want Club funds spent effectively not frivolously.
These four things are necessary but not sufficient to re-grow the Club. We cannot shrink our way to profitability; rather, we must grow our way out of this malaise. We need new members, and we must stop irritating members who then, in turn, resign. We need members to get involved in events and projects rather than putting on a one man show. It’s an exciting time to be an HYC member; to make this Club the best yacht club on Oahu once again! I would consider it an honor if you voted for me.
Aloha HYC Membership:
My name is Howie Mednick, and I am once again, running for Commodore. It has been a difficult year for all, but the coming year doesn’t need to be. As your commodore, I can get our great club back on track.
I’m sure my opponents believe they can do the same, however, actions
speak louder than words, and in these times, we need experience. I have nothing personal against my opponents, however, when given the opportunity to do something positive for the club, they have not stepped up as I believe they should have. We need action, experience and proven leadership in the coming year.
As Vice Commodore in 2008, there were lots of great events going on that brought people out and enjoying themselves at the club. As your Commodore in 2009, and as a member, my list of accomplishments include but are not limited to the following:
1. Addition of ATM machine 2. New dance floor upper deck, which came as no cost to the club
3. New floors in lower bar and ships store 4. Advised club on how to save thousands on liability insurance 5. I cook “Howie burgers” for sailors every Friday after the races 6. My wife and I, on our boat Kula Kai Momi serve as race committee boat 7. Started wine and beer societies (which will begin again 10/21/10) 8. New hot water system for the club 9. Secured deal for new outdoor chairs at club 10. Currently serving on board of Governors 11. 2009 and 2007 Voice of TransPac
2010 has been a bit sluggish, some of which can at attributed to the economy. but it is time to get back on track and say, “ We are here for fun, camaraderie and growth.” I am a leader and a great fund raiser. Many of the items listed above were paid for by generous donations solicited by me from members.
I have done a lot for the club in the past, and will do even more in the future.
Vote for me, HOWIE MEDNICK, COMMODORE.
ThanksHowie
