Role of Education and Outreach• Increase awareness to promote

understanding and support of ChannelIslands MPA Network

• Develop effective communication strategiesfor different audiences

• Enhance Compliance through interpretiveenforcement

• Develop a personal sense of ownership andresponsibility

Marine Reserves Working Group Recommendations

• Create an interagency team of educators

• Develop a training program for staff andvolunteers

• Integrate marine reserves educational materialsinto existing educational programs

• Develop interagency web site for ChannelIslands Marine Reserves

• Develop a program for organized publiceducational visits

Channel Islands MPA Outreach

1. Work with Sanctuary Education Team to conductNeeds Assessment

2. Printed educational products3. Public Service Announcements4. Sanctuary cruises5. Volunteer Scientist Programs6. Interpretive Kiosks and Signs7. Website8. Public outreach and events9. Recreational Boater Survey

Nine activities are defined in the Channel IslandsNMS management plan.

Outreach Timeline•2001-02 Sanctuary Education Team (SET) conductsneeds assessment in preparation for MPA outreach (beforedesignation)

•2002 SET Matrix Created

•2003 Began creating different products to inform publicabout rules and regulations of newly designated statemarine zones within CINMS.

•2007 Began re-tooling products to include new FederalMPA map graphics

Inset Maps

• Inset maps createdfor each island toprovide full view ofeach marine zone

• GPS coordinates areincluded for eachmarine zone

Targeted Audience Brochures

• Targets Boaters

• Mailed to all registeredboaters in VenturaCounty (~25,000).

• Additional 3300 copiesdistributed to boaters inSanta Barbara Harbor

• Distributed at boat showsand by Park

Citizen Monitoring and Awareness

• Reef Environmental EducationFoundation (REEF) Fish andInvertebrate Surveys Volunteer divers annually conduct fish

surveys inside and outside the MPAs.

Since 2006, over 1,444 surveysconducted. Invertebrate surveys nowincluded.

CINMS provides vessel support andNOAA divers

Methods to Deliver Information

• Most printed materials aredownloadable from theCINMS web site, along withthe digital lab.

http://channelislands.noaa.gov

• distribute brochures atpublic forums, teacherworkshops and publicevents.

• Adopt A Business Program

Summary

• Public Input Important

• Conduct a Needs Assessment andPrioritize Audiences

• Long-term Investment

• Develop Multi-pronged DistributionApproaches
