Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whānau and Friends

Condolences Bishop Basil Meeking, the 7th bishop of Christchurch (1987-1996), died last week. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let Perpetual Light shine upon him. May his souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Cross Country Kia ora Whanau, the forecast is looking ominous for tomorrow’s event and it might be a challenge to complete. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for an update in the morning. If we postpone, we will hold the event next week on Friday afternoon. The cross country itself is a fun race with children setting and trying to achieve personal goals. If they find the distance challenging, they are able to walk, skip, hop or get through however they can. The pupils vying for Zone selection will need to push harder, but all runners need to aim for the best they can run. This will take many forms throughout the school and all levels are celebrated. Update on Alert Level 1 Consultation I wish to clear up any miscommunication on the recent consultation. The survey was to seek parent voice rather than “this is what is going to happen” and to enable time for reflection and comment. Interestingly this was a topic on Tuesday night’s 7 Sharp on TVOne. The outcome of the survey gave an indication of what parents wanted and this has been the direction taken. There are a few new initiatives below but, other than those, the before lockdown status quo remains. The data to the consultation. Of the 139 families in the school:

20% were in favour of yes, with a few options. 32% were in favour of no, with a few wanting the morning option kept. 48% didn’t respond.

Changes ● Parents and caregivers can still drop off in the mornings with a staff member to greet them.

This was a strong request from our survey, and within the limits of staff available we will endeavour to continue. ● Room 9 will remain in the Parish Centre. ● Parents collecting their children after school are asked to stay in the junior playground area till 2.45pm so teachers and

pupils can finish their day undistracted. After 2.45pm you are very welcome to go to the classrooms and/or to talk to the teachers. ● Support contact tracing efforts by using our QR Code poster at the gate for the NZ COVID Tracer App.

This is asked for by the Health Ministry for possible contact tracing. ● To make it easier for parents who are collecting children during the day, you can ring the office and we’ll send or bring

the child out. Sometimes this is for sick children and parents may have younger children in the car or be sick themselves, or it’s raining. It is just a kind gesture to help parents out.

Reminders ● The open door policy is always available, so please seek clarification by asking, phoning, emailing or catching us after

school. We do ask though that you respect learning time 8.45am-2.45pm if you need to speak to the teachers. ● After 8.45am parents are asked to drop off forgotten items, eg. lunchboxes, schoolbags, to the Office. This is so

teaching isn't disturbed during instruction time, which often happens. ● If you are collecting or returning your children during the day, children must go to the Office so their arrival/departure

is noted. This is important for safety reasons. Feedback comments are available here, for privacy it’s in an abridged version. survey feedback L1 2020 God Bless/Atua Whakapai/Fa’amanuia le Atua

Reading to Dogs Reading To Dogs has returned to New Brighton Library - Wednesdays 3.30-4.30pm. The aim is to provide a relaxed, non-threatening atmosphere which encourages children to practise their reading skills without judgement and develop a love of reading by using dogs who are the beloved pets of the Christchurch City Council Animal Management team. These furry friends have all been trained and tested for health, safety and temperament. Library staff and the dog handler will be present to help facilitate the sessions which are 15 minutes long. Children can bring a book from school or librarians can help them choose a book at the library before the session begins. The programme is free but bookings are essential. Caregivers can visit the library or ring 03-941-7923 to book a session but they need to be quick as the sessions fill up fast!
