Welcome to Tour 2020Glyndebourne began in 1934 with a love story between John Christie, a maverick landowner and Audrey Mildmay, a talented young soprano.
They shared a conviction that opera was a life-enhancing experience and just over 50 years ago in 1968 we started the Glyndebourne Tour, helping us to share this vibrant and relevant art form with more people around the country. Join us in 2020 and enjoy two of the world’s most beloved operas reimagined for the modern age and an event that is perfect for those that are new to this rich art form. This really is No Ordinary Opera.

GIACOMO PUCCINI
When an innocent young geisha meets an American naval officer
she falls instantly and deeply in love. Giving up her family and her faith, she risks all in marriage to the dashing Lieutenant Pinkerton. But her fragile happiness cannot last. Soon love turns to abandonment and betrayal, and Butterfly (Cio-Cio-San) is forced to make one final, agonising sacrifice.
Bursting with exotic colour and memorable melodies, Puccini’s seductive score conceals a dramatic blade that cuts to the heart. Madama Butterfly is a classic love story that never fails to move, a tragic romance that sweeps you along in the intensity of its action. Blending authentic Japanese music with luscious European harmonies and orchestration, the opera is an irresistible fusion of East and West.
This thought-provoking production updates the original turn-of-the-century setting to the 1950s, confronting the darker political and emotional currents of a work that acknowledges that there are some barriers too great for even love to conquer.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
True love conquers all in a colourful fairy tale that pits the forces of
darkness against truth, goodness and light.
Prince Tamino is on a quest: to rescue the beautiful Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, who has been kidnapped by her father Sarastro. But is all really as it seems? With the help of bird-catcher Papageno, Tamino must brave not only dragons and the forces of darkness but trials of fire and water if he is to arrive at the truth and gain Pamina as his wife.
Composed just months before his death, Mozart’s final stage work is a musical masterpiece that reimagines opera for the age of Enlightenment. The sweetness and apparent simplicity of this enchanting score conceals a great deal of sophistication, weaving some of the composer’s most beautiful and best-loved melodies together in an elegant allegory whose wicked queens and noble princes are just the beginning of the story.
This playful production sets the action in a turn-of-the-century Viennese hotel, with the magical elements of the story brought to life with puppetry.
