New Dimensions Named “A” School

New Dimensions High School has once again been named an “A” school!

This designation marks the 10th year in a row that NDHS has been honored as a top-rated educational institution. In Osceola County only three other schools, NEOCITY Academy, Osceola School for Arts and PATHS (formerly TECO) received an “A” grade for the 2018-19 School year.

School grades are calculated using a number of criteria including: student achievement and learning gains in Math and ELA, achievement in Science and Social Studies as well as Graduation Rate and Acceleration Success (Dual Enrolment, Industry Certification, AP)

The Tiger Talk staff would like to congratulate the Students and Staff on this great honor.

Sportswhether students have all necessary paperwork and are determined to be committed enough to continue with the remaining tryout days. There may be open an invitation to join the Cross Country teams after those dates if there are still spots available on the team or should someone be released.

Students planning to participate in any sport must pay (ONE) $50 Athletic Fee which will allow students to be eligible to participate in any and all sports during the 2019-2020 school year. Students must also submit a copy of a current physical (no more than a year old) that will be good (before expiring) through the season of the sport they are participating in. In addition to the sport’s physical, athletes must complete the following sports paperwork… FHSAA EL2, EL3, GA4 (if entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade AND new to NDHS), Facilities Use Form, NDHS Medical Authorization Form, and the NDHS Parent-Athlete Contract. Incoming 9th graders with a current entrance physical do not need to complete a new sports physical, but may use their entrance physical in lieu of the FHSAA sports physical (EL2 pg2) if it will lasts through the sport’s 2019-2020 season, but must still complete FHSAA EL2 pg 1). All these forms are available on the school website under Athletics.

Cross Country is a great sport for boys and girls looking to letter in a varsity sport starting in 9th grade and other students who do not wish to worry about having the technical skill required of sports like volleyball, soccer and basketball. Colleges admissions look for a well rounding students with good academics, any athletics, and other extra-curricular activities as well as community service as part of their complete package.

See Mr. Timmerman if you are interested in Cross Country. Practices will primarily be in the morning for the first month of school until the weather turns a little cooler. About half the meets are during the week and half are on Saturdays. The first cross country meet is on August 31st.

Volleyball Season Preview

The 2019 Tiger Volleyball Program is looking to continue the success it found in 2018!

Last year’s Varsity team was an impressive 12-2 including key wins over both Liberty and Poinciana. While the JV team posted a solid 6-6 record.

Top varsity returners are Alexandra Baez, Samantha Lopez, Yanizvette Pabon, and Edwina St. Remy. The team has the difficult task of replacing 6 seniors from last year’s winning squad but Coach Finnucan feels that with the talent from the 2018 JV team coupled with the leadership her returning players will provide the Tiger Volleyball program will have another successful season.

Coach Finnucan followed up by saying “We appreciated all the support from the students and administration last year and hope to pack the stands with students again for all home games this year as they bring so much energy to the match. No team like playing us in the Tigers Den’ with our great fans and band”.

The team’s first home match will take place on Thursday, August 29th against Osceola Christian Prep. JV plays at 5:00 followed by the Varsity at 6:15.

Cross Country Preview

Tryouts for Cross Country will occur over the first few weeks of school with some predetermined dates to meet certain goals to remain in consideration. The first few days of practice and assessment will be on Friday August 16th from 4-5:30pm and then on Monday-Thursday August 19-22 from 8-9am. The first couple days will be informational and to determine

Raul Giron Class of 2012

Soon after my graduation from New Dimensions High School in 2012, I started my undergraduate degree at the University of South Florida. While at USF, I majored in Molecular Biology and minored in Infection Control. For me going to college meant finally starting on my future career goals and that involved submersing myself in the different college offices and expanding on the education I was getting in the classroom. Throughout the four years of my undergraduate career, I was heavily involved as a Resident Assistant, Clinical Research Assistant, and as a Orientation Leader.

In the fall of 2016 I graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree and joined the Peace Corps. While in Peace Corps, I traveled to Southeast Asia where I lived in Cambodia for two years. My time in Cambodia involved me working at a local health center as a Nutrition Specialist and Health Educator.

After my two years in Cambodia I moved back home to Florida where I am now working for Universal’s Marketing and Sales department and at the same time completing my Master’s Degree in Clinical Microbiology. Upon graduating from graduate school, I aspire to work for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as a Microbiologist.

Robin Donis Class of 2015

Hello fellow NDHS Students, my name is Robin Donis, and just like you I was sitting in the same seats you are in today constantly looking at the clock waiting

for 4:00pm. It’s been four years since I graduated from New Dimensions High School (Go class of 2015!)l , and my life has been a roller coaster ever since.

During my senior year, I was offered two scholarships to play soccer out of state. One school was Bethel College in Indiana, and the other school was Lake Michigan College in the state of Michigan. I felt like my life was heading in the direction I wanted it to go. I decided to accept the offer from Lake Michigan, and so I left my family and friends and moved to a place which felt like whole different planet.

A week into preseason I wasn’t feeling like myself, soccer became a job and obligation and I wasn’t having fun with the sport anymore, and so I decided to drop my scholarship and return home. I then went to Valencia College where I graduated with my AA, I was hoping to get a degree in physical therapy, but like many college students I changed my degree a million times. Going from physical therapy, to personal training, to guidance counseling, Occupational Therapy,

I am now in UCF pursing my bachelor’s degree in Special Education. After accepting a job offer to work with kids who have Autism, I fell in love with the job and the impact I make not only in the students’ lives, but their families lives as well. I am 2 years away from graduating and with that being said, I want to let you guys know that college is not race, and college is not high school. Like me, you will change your major many times, but do not feel pressured into pursuing a career that is not in your heart. College is where you discover who you really are and what really makes you happy. It may take you 4 years to finish and that’s awesome, but like me it may take you 6 years to finish, and that’s alright, because the hard work is being put in by and no one else, it’s your time and no one else’s.

Student Spotlight

Robin Donis ...(from page 7)

Do not be afraid to make mistakes, be-cause its from mistakes that we learn and grow into being better people. Ask tons of questions. Don’t grow up too fast, live day by day. The older you get the more expensive life gets. Enjoy high school, enjoy times with your friends, and all the laughing in lunch because before you know it, it will all be over. I wish you guys a happy and successful school year, seniors congrats class of 2020, senior year was my favorite year of them all, be smart and don’t slack.

Good luck,

Joanna Serat Class of 2016

My name is Joanna Serat and I graduated from New Dimensions high school in 2016. Since graduating, I’ve been attending the University of North

Florida. I am currently a public health major and since this is my last year, I will be taking courses to prepare myself for my internship in Spring. I was recently hired by The Arc Jacksonville in April as an Independent Living Mentor (ILM), I will be working with students with intellectual disabilities and showing them independence away from home. I also worked at Cleclia’s Party Dresses that specializes in prom, Quinceanera, wedding and bridesmaids dresses.

In my spare time, I try my best to be active on campus. I am a member of Black Student Union (BSU), where I was on the Black Excellence Chair Committee last semester. I recently got initiated in to Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG), which is a public health chapter. In this chapter, I learn about various opportunities within public health and various traits employers look for in graduates. I also try my best to be an active member of Rotaract.
