No Lead Products

Quick Guide to No Lead Regulations, Products &

Selling Tips

What are lead free or no lead products?

• Products can be described as lead free if the weighted average material composition of the wetted surface areas contains less than 0.25% lead.

Why lead free products?

• The State of California has introduced a new state law generally known as AB 1953 mandating the use of “lead free” materials for all pipes & pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures being installed or repaired in any public water system or plumbing in any facility providing water for human consumption January 1, 2010.

• Since California passed its law, the State of Vermont has also adopted a very similar law (S 152) that also goes into effect on the same date.

What products are covered by AB 1953?

• In California the law states that any product "providing water for human consumption" must be lead free. While NSF-61 has issued guidelines on what products are covered by their regulations, the California law does not.

• For example, in NSF-61 electronic sensor faucets are exempt from having to meet this requirement because it was believed that these devices are not intended to be used as drinking faucets. The California law provides no such exemptions.

What is Speakman’s position on lead free?

• We believe that all faucets including sensor faucets fall under the purview of the California law. We have begun converting all of our faucet product lines to meet lead free regulations.

• The majority of our faucets will be converted prior to this date

& will be in stock and ready for shipment come January 1, 2010. Those products not yet ready will come on board as quickly as possible thereafter.

• We fully endorse the use of lead free brass & will be converting our entire product line to no lead, even for those states that don't legally require it.

Does approval to CA AB 1953 mean you do not need to be approved to NSF-61?

• No. Products must still be certified to NSF-61 even if they are listed as approved to AB 1953.

• The CA AB 1953 law only addresses the amount of lead in materials coming in contact with water. NSF-61 considers the amount of lead, other regulated metals and organic materials that leach from the product over an extended test period. To meet product performance standards such as ANSI, UPC, CSA, etc. products must still comply with NSF-61.

Do products need to be listed by third party agencies?

• Yes. Third party certification by accredited listing agencies is required. – Speakman is certified with IAPMO

• If in doubt about a manufacturer’s claim to be lead free, ask them for their third party AB 1953 product listing. Approved manufacturers will make this available to their customers.

How do I order no lead products?

• Speakman is using the suffix "CA" as an option during the transition period until the full conversion of our product line has been completed.
