The InvisiHead meets and exceeds all environmental regulations and standards applied around the world. US EPA designation of the InvisiHeadas the Best Technology Available (BTA) has been supported by the Australian EPA and Ministry of Environment, and Canada’s DFO .

American Eco Systems Elmosa Seawater Intake and Outfall Systems

The InvisiHead (IH) – the backbone of the system, the pipeline and the NatSep all form the complete Elmosa offshore/onshore seawater intakesystem. The omnidirectional IH intake head system is paraboloidally streamlined so as to guide in water particles and leave sand, debris, andmarine life behind. The flow funnels in as a round surround up, sideways, and down in a 4‐D (space & time) naturally reducing flow activities tothe very immediate area around the IH – the flow zone. The IH is fitted to the upstream end of the intake pipeline located some distance into thesea from the shoreline. As it receives pump energy pulses, the InvisiHead, recognizing the site and flow conditions, manages the flowaccordingly. Entrance velocity is lower than 0.09 m/s (0.3 fps). The approach velocity is extremely slow at <<0.002 m/s (0.0065fps). The IH intakehead becomes hydraulically invisible to suspended matter including aquatic life. In other words, the IH does not act as a sink point and thereforedoes not suck in debris, sediment, or marine life. The system meets and exceeds all known environmental regulations. The IH meets and exceedsthe 0.15 m/s max limit set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The nature‐operated IH utilizes marine currents to flush out debristhrough the opposite end and stealthily diverts by 90○ the flow from the main course toward the intake pipe inlet. The IH Super slow entrance velocity drastically reduces flow of sediment, marine life, oxygen, and debris. It also leads to lower head losses andlower level drawdown at the pump intake basin. The IH entrance section is hydraulically balanced and fine‐tuned in lab tests to be in phase withflow streamlines. In 2012, the 4 sequential flow phases were further tuned. Vane perforation was eliminated for smoother transition from phaseto phase within the IH. The entrance dimensions are not arbitrarily selected but hydraulically calculated in a multi dimensional approach andthrough physical model setup and testing. Each dimension is a function of the entrance velocity. Eddies, by this approach, are totally eliminatedthus head losses at the IH are reduced to a fraction of a millimeter. Pressure drop is negligibly low at 0.000017 bar. ©AES, LLC & Amecosys Ltd. 2020

1. The InvisiHead

The key to preserving the intake integrity is to maintain the original ambient conditions at the spot where water is to be drawn into theintake pipeline and transported onshore. Inferior designs of the upstream inlet of intake pipelines can lead to creating high negativepressures at and around the inlet (intake mouth), which results in the suction of sediment, fish, seaweed and other debris. The inlet has tobe properly designed. The InvisiHead is created to address that very notion: be hydraulically invisible and smart, act like if you were notthere, be selective and admit water only. Nature manages the InvisiHead system including its operation and maintenance for life. Antibiofouling disinfectant‐dispensing system is built‐in the InvisiHead if required. The InvisiHead is designed and built to have over 50 years ofuseful operational life. It is a robust structure built to stand all stormy conditions and deliver full capacity of flow if operates as an intakehead or as an outfall at all times. Accredited Test Facility (ATF) program adopted by fabricator establishes minimum requirements for testfacilities, their personnel and equipment to qualify for accreditation to test and qualify welders. Many intake systems have either proven to be very costly to build, operate, and maintain like mechanical screened systems or wedge wire screens; or have  involved  a  great deal of  guesswork during  the design phase  that produces  less  than optimal  results. Offshore  intake systems can be upgraded and highly improved by a balanced and well‐designed intake head system that fully utilizes natural forces, i.e. the potential flow principle in guiding water particles in smooth, uniform streamlines into the intake head. The InvisiHead intake head system was  conceived  to  act  like  no  other  intake  head.  It  is  divided  into  four  distinctive  sequential  flow  phases:  Approach,  Stabilization, Acceleration, and Steady Flow. In 2012 the sequential order of the flow phases was further smoothed up to eliminate flow of sediments and debris.It was a meticulous  task  to  tune  the  InvisiHead and  to divide  the  through  flow  regime  into  four  sequentially mating  flow phases. This process  led to what the InvisiHead  is. Super smooth flow transition from one phase to the next  leads the flow through  into the pipeline upstream end  in a stealth  fashion. The way the  flow nets  formed at and around the  IH makes  it virtually  invisible  in hydraulic terms to suspended matter. There, where the InvisiHead borrowed its name.

The InvisiHead system works as a superb sea outfall. It disperses the effluent in a 4‐D funneling out, round surround sideway up and downmanner. It does not rise up to the surface, or sinks to the floor or circulates into the intake. The dispersed effluent, be it RO brine, powerplant warm water or municipal discharge disperses, and mixes to reach maximum dilution within the early part of the near field mixingzone. The effluent assumes physical and chemical properties of the surrounding seawater almost immediately after discharging. TheInvisiHead works as an efficient heat transfer system when used as a cooling water outfall. The heat plume disappears into the ambient afew meters away from the outlet. If heat or brine sensors are installed 10 meters away from the outfall would register no change. Qualityof performance is controlled by the streamlining of the IH. Quality Management System is implemented by the fabricator to ensure anddemonstrate that they meet the standards demanded to satisfy our customers' demands and expectations. 13

The InvisiHead self management and control of the flow

Natural diversion of sediments, debris, and marine life:Adult and juvenal fish, jellyfish, fish larvae, seaweed, and the rest of marine life, sediments and debris if come into the InvisiHead they flow straight through and out of it from the opposite end into the ambient seawater again. Through current velocities are much higher than the velocity at the IH outlet, and that is one of the factors that keeps the IH flow clean. Our design and development process examine all the potential risks and hurdles we need to overcome to get the InvisiHead to the customer. That involves defining the specification and the design through drawings and models.

Elmosa Offshore Seawater Intake systems consist of 3 major components:1. The InvisiHead that is positioned at the offshore upstream end of the intake pipeline located between 50 to 10,000 meters offshore

from the shoreline. The offshore distance depends on water depth, wave action, and on other site conditions. The IH is usuallylocated under a minimum of 2 meters of water. There is no maximum flow capacity or depth limit however.

2. The intake pipeline that is made of either concrete, steel, steel lined with polyethylene, high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe or GRPFRP. The pipeline is the link that connects the IH at the upstream offshore end with the NatSep separation basin located at theonshore downstream end.

3. The NatSep separation basin is where whatever sand and debris that flow into the IH is naturally separated, settled, and periodicallyremoved or may never need desilting depending on how it is configured. The flow reaching the pumps is clean and free of sedimentand debris.

As per the ISO 9001:2015 requires, the fabricator controls the documents required by the quality management system and todemonstrate the effective operation of the quality management system during InvisiHead fabrication so that the system performance isclosely monitored through reporting and other documented observations. It also outlines the requirements on production and serviceprovision.

2. The conveyer that links the sending offshore intake structure (IH) to the receiving onshore one (NatSep) ‐ the intake pipeline

The NatSep is designed to separate any sediment that may flow through into the basin as part of the water flowing into and through theIH. By the time the flow reaches the seawater pump bay it is free of the target sand size and weeds. The NatSep default cutline sandparticle size targeted is 125µ very fine sand and larger. As soon as the seawater pumps at the pump house are turned on the water level at the NatSep drops creating a level difference betweenthe mean sea level and water level at the NatSep. That level drop is what drives the water into the InvisiHead offshore and through theintake pipe to the NatSep onshore. No pumps are needed at the offshore upstream location. The NatSep separation basin is the place where the target sediment and larger that may flow into the IH during stormy weather areremoved. If the whole water column goes into full mixing under the extraordinary turbulent conditions sediment becomes associated withthe flow as a result of the abnormal conditions. The suspension gets naturally separated and settle at the NatSep intake basin long beforeit reaches the seawater pump intake bay.Cleaning of the NatSep basin is done once every 5 years if ever. The NatSep is subdivided into two‐100% capacity bays so as to performcleaning without the need for a plant shutdown. Uninterrupted operation is secured. If sufficient sediment storage is provided in the basin, desilting may never be needed.Elmosa has discontinued the use of all mechanical screening systems including stationary and traveling long ago. They are no longerneeded when the InvisiHead ‐NatSep intake basin technologies are combined.

We have added a new version of the InvisiHead to be installed and used at platforms and in LPG offshore stations

The offshore platforms/LPG terminals can get clean water or discharge effluents by installing the InvisiHead. It can be fixed on the seafloor or on the side of the platform structure at any level and be connected to the pump. The InvisiHead here acts as a high qualitystrainer that lets in good quality water with no sediments, marine life or debris. The InvisiHead can also be fixed to an over hangsupported to the mother structure. It also works as a superb outfall meeting and exceeding all environmental standards worldwide. AESpersonnel apply their skill, knowledge, and experience to perform their duties correctly and widen the IH spectrum of functions.Competency assessments are used to ensure that personnel are performing the assigned tasks correctly as required.

The InvisiHead fixed on a supported platform overhang or a cantilever beam works as a seawater intake system or a high quality pump strainer

A meter or so away from the platform structure is a good position to provide the platform with a clean supply of seawater or works as a anoutfall diffuser. The InvisiHead provides the flow capacity round the clock under all operation and weather conditions for many decades tocome. The InvisiHead is a robust structure made of thick duplex or 316 stainless steel.During fabrication, streamlining of the InvisiHead matches what goes at site and follows the curving made as per the flow streamlines.Control, and maintenance of measuring and inspection equipment during fabrication are periodically performed. All devices carry a uniquereference, and have a unique record. The record specifies the method of calibration, the frequency, and the master equipment to be usedduring fabrication as per the written set of rules known as a standard operating procedure. Standard operating procedures are written, step‐by‐step instructions that describe how to perform a routine activity. Employees complete them in the exact same way every time so thatthe fabrication can remain consistent.

The extremely low velocity discharge through the IH diffuser allows it to reach the ambient conditions only a few meters away from the tip ofthe outlet and with the early stages of the near field mixing zone. At that location TDS, optical or thermal sensors will show no gain intemperature or light blockage or rise in salinity. At only 5 meters away from the diffuser outer tip, the velocity approaches 0.002 m/s. The 4‐Ddispersion action of the discharged effluent insures rapid mixing with ambient waters. Background ambient conditions are reached nearlysoon after the effluent leaves the diffuser.

For coastal areas and through the environmental perspective, a once through cooling system (with large heat and brine dissipationrequirements), the IH proves to be the best option acceptable for Base Case design. For once through cooling water systems brine ormunicipal wastewater discharge, the IH design as an intake and outfall contains and achieves the following:• Adequate mixing and dispersion takes place within the close vicinity of the outfall, required dilution is reached early in the mixing zone;• The extension of the discharge plumes is neutralized within 5 meters from the IH structure, and ambient conditions are reached within that

space.• The discharge loads do not materially adversely affect other users of the receiving water;• The InvisiHead sea outfall diffuser is also developed for protecting any critical areas such as spawning grounds or migration areas, e.g.

location of outfall (depth of intake relative to organism habitat). 21

In 2006, marine life rendered in the Caribbean a mesh intake useless and nocked it out of service. The power plant management decided  to use  the  InvisiHead. A  system was  streamlined  to  fit local site conditions and respond to the plant requirements. The system was delivered, installed and commissioned  in  the  same year.  It has been  in operation ever  since and  for  last 13 years delivering the design flow capacity and coexisting in harmony with the local marine community.

ConclusionThe InvisiHead system is a technical and a commercial breakthrough in the intake and outfall seawater industry. Its super low approach and inlet velocities makes the InvisiHead hydraulically invisible to sediments, debris, and marine life. Natural intelligence is integrated into the system during design and fabrication so it can recognize site conditions and  application and accordingly commence flow management as soon as seawater pumps are turned on. It is run and entirely managed by Mother nature.

Attaining a certain dilution rate in a given radius around the InvisiHead working as an effluent outfall  might be obligatory in order to meet mixing zone regulations. Technically, the InvisiHead diffuser meets and exceeds environmental requirements, and achieves high dilution ratio in just a short distance from the diffuser outlet. The effluent requires a short distance in the near field mixing zone to meet regulation requirements. It protects the environment since it inflicts no adverse impact on the ambient.

For dredging fluids and mine slurries, turbidity decays rapidly after release. They reach ambient conditions within a few meters away from the discharge point. We can model each instance and display a close up look at expected diffusion.

RO concentrate as well as power plant cooling water, domestic and industrial wastewater, offshore oil platform produced water, aquaculture effluents, mine slurry and dredged water turbidity all reach background conditions within the early stages of the near field mixing zone and within the vicinity of the diffuser structure. We use US EPA Visual Plumes computer model to demonstrate the InvisiHead outfall capabilities upon request.

Commercially, the InvisiHead intake and diffuser systems are lower in costs to buy. No costs are involved neither with operation nor with maintenance. The systems involve no human or machine interference in their operation and maintenance process. The technology involves no moving parts or parts to be replaced. The InvisiHead is O&M‐free for life. The money spent in running other intake and outfall O&M‐intensive systems can be saved in the case of the InvisiHead technology. The savings pay back the money spent to buy the system. The payback period is relatively short – it is a few months into operation.
