God in Nature Lightning, God’s Fireworks

Lightning is something that we have all seen at

some point in our lives. However, it is sufficing

to say that many of us know very little about

lightning and how amazing it truly is. Light-

ning is the occurrence of electrical discharge

that occurs naturally for a brief duration. Light-

ning generally contains high voltage, carrying

up to 100 million volts of electricity. Lightning

is accompanied by a bright flash of light and

typically thunder follows. In most cases, light-

ning strikes take place in the vicinity of the

storm cloud. However, some lightning strikes

can strike up to 25 miles from the center of the

storm cloud! Remember this the next time that

you find comfort and security in being miles away from a storm. Interestingly enough, lightning

flows from the ground up to the cloud. The average length of a lightning strike is generally 2 to 3

miles. The diameter of an average lightning strike is rather small, usually the diameter of a quar-

ter. The reason they look larger is due to the brightness of the lightning itself. Most lightning

strikes occur in under 2 microseconds or 0.000002 seconds. Lightning strikes can reach tempera-

tures of 50,000 degrees. That is more than 5 times the temperature of the surface of the sun!

There are 50 to 100 lightning strikes every single second world wide! This amounts to 3 million

lightning strikes per day. In Venezuela, there is an atmospheric phenomenon referred to as

“Catatumbo” lightning. At the mouth of the Catatumbo River, storm clouds gather at a frequency

of 140 to 160 nights a year, 10 hours a day and up to 280 lightning strikes per hour! Lightning is

known as God’s fireworks. This natural phenomenon is one of great beauty but also one of great

power. It is quite amazing what God creates and allows us to marvel at. One must simply look to

the skies to witness the glory of God!
