Leave town and look up but
don’t forget to take your
camera and tripod.
This is the “take home” message from
the very interesting and informative
presentation by Neil Creek on
Astrophotography last Wednesday.
Neil was generous with his time closing
the night with a practical demonstration
of night photography. He certainly has a
passion for it and some of his images of
the Milky Way and Andromeda are
truly amazing.
Set Subjects 2018
Thank you to the 33 members who
voted on the number of set subject vs.
open competitions and the set subject
topics for next year.
64% indicated their preference was for
4 Set subjects (plus Berris Stokes Nature
makes 5) and 5 open competitions.
The set subjects chosen by members
are, in order of number of votes
received: Symmetry; People in the
Street; and Door(s)/Lock(s)/Gate(s).
With Culture being carried over from
this year making up the 4th.
Member survey
The Member survey conducted by
Des Lowe provided very useful
feedback on competitions and general
Club activities. As might be expected,
the comments were diverse with some
members liking certain things and
others not liking the same things.
The Committee has discussed the
comments at some length. Hopefully,
members will appreciate the changes
that will be made.
Competition Steward – 2018
Des Lowe, our current Competition
Steward, announced some time ago
that he will be retiring from that role at
the end of this year.
This is a most important role within the
Club, so I urge all members to give
serious consideration to volunteer for
this role. Des has said that he is
prepared to handle the Visual Pursuits
side of things, which will help reduce
the workload of running the
monthly competitions.
I am already recruiting the Judges,
which also assists in reducing the
workload.
Also, we compete in 3 interclub
competitions each year and an
Interclub Competition Steward is
required. The role involves liaising with
the hosting club, selecting images
(with a couple of other club members)
and delivering/retrieving images
to/from the hosting club. ESPS is not
hosting in 2018.
So, members it is over to you!!!!
Format Editor – 2018
Elinor Jack has volunteered to be
Format Editor for next year, replacing
Peter Williams who has done an
excellent job for the past 3 years.
Thank you, Peter and Elinor.
End of Year
Function
I hope as many members as possible
can attend our final event for our
50th Anniversary Year on Friday
8th December at Mitcham
(same location as last year).
The judging for the Images of the year
and other awards is being done by a
panel from Yarra Ranges
Photographic Society.
See you there.
Regards,
Joseph

Club Weekend Away
It was wonderful to see some new
faces this year, as a relaxed social
time away gives you the opportunity
to really get to know members and
their partners better. Astrid had
mapped out several locations for us
to visit, allowing for a great variety of
photographic opportunities, in
addition to some fun activities and
conversing over meals. Some of the
photographic opportunities and
highlights were magnificent coastal
scenery, photographed at different
times of the day, the wind farm,
desalination plant, wildlife,
spring flora, and of course each other,
usually eating!! We were blessed with
magnificent weather which added to
the atmosphere.

Dear Esteemed Photographer
It’s with much excitement that The Worldwide Publishing Empire invites you to contribute to our next photographic book, on Australia’s cricket obsession. Yep – that’s right – cricket!
Now, we don’t mean photos of a Steve Smith cover drive or Mitchell Starc’s follow-through. We mean the kind of cricket all of us play - in back yards, front yards, schoolyards, laneways, factories, offices, parks and beaches, and anywhere else a ball can be bowled and a bat can be swung. Organised cricket is also fine, but at a more grassroots level, played on beautiful suburban venues or desolate outback grounds, and involving people dedicated to a club’s existence. Also appreciated are photos of stumps painted or drawn on walls, fences, trees, bins, etc, and cricket fans, from spectators to autograph hunters to kids’ bedroom walls covered with posters of their heroes – anything that shows a love of the game (please see attached sample spread).
The preference is for contemporary content, including great photographs
from your files, but they must be in colour. And there’s a whole summer of cricket happening right now. So if this sounds like a project that interests you then please submit your fabulous cricket images.
The aim of the project is to feature wonderful photographs that capture the heart of cricket in Australia, supported by three essays in a book that will be beautifully designed and printed. We can’t guarantee financial riches but what we hope to achieve from this, and from all future titles, is to showcase excellence in Australian photography. We greatly appreciate your support in this endeavour.
Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing your brilliant work.

Applying a Bit of Pressure to
my Photography
Have you ever put your photography
under a bit of extra pressure to produce
an image to a specific brief within a
restricted time frame and then have it
critiqued? It can be a somewhat daunting
but rewarding experience,
as I discovered in October when
I participated in the Canon Light Awards
Live event in Melbourne.
The event was run over a weekend,
commencing in the Hoyts cinema,
Victoria Gardens, Richmond at 9:00 am.
There was a choice of a three hour
masterclass in Fashion Photography,
Travel Photography, Environmental
Portraiture or the Art of Vision. At the
end of the Masterclass each group was
given a brief of the kind of image they
were to capture. Participants then had 24
hours from midday Saturday to
midday Sunday to plan, capture and
upload their best image.
Sunday afternoon from 2:00 till 5:00 pm
was then given to critique of each image
back in the original groups. Finally
everyone gathered together for a viewing
of all the images from all groups and the
presentation of awards. The first prize in
each group was a Canon A2 printer.
There were some 200 photographers
participating in the event. In the group
that I joined there were about 60 people
including a small number
of professionals. I suspect in
other groups, especially the Fashion
Photography Masterclass, there may
have been a few more professional or
aspiring professional photographers.
Overall there was also a reasonably
good balance of men and women. What
particularly struck me was the age
profile, markedly younger than ESPS.
There were a couple of teenagers, even
more in their 20s and 30s, with the
retired age group represented but not
the majority by a long way.
I chose to join the “Art of Vision”
Masterclass with AIPP Grand Master
Photographer Tony Hewitt. The first half
of his presentation focused on what I
would describe as his philosophy of
photography. There was far too much to
give even a reasonably comprehensive
summary of the presentation, but here
are a few things I jotted down:
He began with drawing a connection
between poetry and photography. Then
Canon Light Experience Awards
use your whole being; trust your
instinct; aim to create pictures that say
what you want to say; the photograph
is not the end product, the viewer may
make it something else.
Ask yourself the questions:, “Who are
you as a photographer? What is
photography to you? What do you
respond to?” Create an exhibition of
your work, what connects your images?
Explore your vision. The power of an
image is often hidden in the invisible
layers. “Everyone is a genius” – Einstein.
YOUR image, YOUR vision!
The second half of Tony’s presentation
was more about the application of his
principles. Again, here is a very brief
summary:
Keep it simple. Creativity starts in your
head. Recognise what you are
responding to when you press the
shutter – simplicity; symbology;
geometry etc.
Balance – negative spaces with
positive space. Balance should ‘feel’
comfortable. Good design can lead
the viewer. Balance includes more
than design. What are your
images about?
“Where the spirit does not work with the
hand there is no art” – Leonard da Vinci.
All of these points and more were
illustrated with examples of Tony’s own
work. You can see some
of the images at
http://www.tonyhewitt.com/galleries/.
Then came the 24 hour challenge brief.
“The search for balance
and design”
Capture an image that illustrates an
inherent balance of design, whether by
man or nature, through the use of light
and shadow, and its effect on texture
and form. It may be an image that only
exists temporarily due to changing light
and/or shadows and invites the viewer
to look deeper and find a deeper
narrative and meaning! It must be taken
in the next 24 hours. Metadata will be
checked.
I had originally thought I would head out
of the city to either the bay or the hills,
but as the venue for the masterclasses
was in Richmond I decided instead to try
the Botanic Gardens. So after a quick bite
of lunch in the food court I drove in to St
Kilda Road and parked just up from the
Des Lowe
ESPS FORMAT - Volume 50 - Issue 10 - November 2017 Page 11
shrine. I then spent the next four – five
hours along St Kilda Road and in the
Gardens searching for balance
and design! Saturday evening was spent
processing and selecting potential
images. I thought about going out again
early Sunday morning but decided against
doing so. Instead I spent the morning
refining the best images from Saturday
and making a final decision. In the end
the image I chose was one of the earlier
ones in my Saturday shoot. It was taken
at the Greek War Memorial just off St
Kilda Road a short distance before the
Shrine of Remembrance.
Back at Victoria Gardens on Sunday
afternoon Tony Hewitt gave a critique of
all the images from our masterclass
group. As might be expected the standard
was very high and just seeing other
photographers’ work and hearing Tony’s
comments was a valuable learning
experience in itself. I was glad that, like
ESPS competition nights, the makers’
names were not attached to the images
except for those who received a
commendation or award. Mine was not
one of them!
There is no question that I was nervous
about putting my photography out there
and having it assessed and commented
on by a Master Photographer in front of
60 other photographers I did not know.
However, having done so, I can highly
recommend the experience. Pitting your
photographic skills against a specific
brief and with a limited time frame gets
you focused in a very positive way.
Coupled with some insightful input and
helpful evaluation of your work it can
inject new life and perspectives into
your images. Whatever the context,
if you have an opportunity to undertake
a challenge like this, don’t hesitate. It is
not about proving yourself, but about
discovering YOUR images, YOUR vision.

3 Ripe Seeds was taken at the Blue Lotus Farm earlier this year on a

might do better as DPI than a print.
