The 2016 West Kimberley Interschool Primary Cross Country Carnival at Cable Beach Amphitheatre
on Wednesday 25th May. The scene was set for a glorious day as the waves rolled in and the sun
shone down. A contingent of 32 of the best Cross Country runners that St. Mary’s College could
muster were ready and eager to run. Once again the competitors had been training under the
tutelage of the great marathon runner Joseph Davies, this time with Luilyn Wilson helping out with
the running of the early morning training sessions. A big thank you also to Miss Joselyn and Miss Gina
who fed the students breakfast after each training session.
The students represented St. Mary’s with distinction and displayed remarkable sportsmanship and
courage both during the races and whilst cheering and spectating. There were some inspirational
runs from every member of the team, none more so than Kyle Lawrence, a Year 6 student, who
badly hurt his foot on the first lap but still managed to complete the 3 laps of the course. It was truly
inspiring and reminded me of a quote from Pierre De Coubertin, the founder of the modern day
Olympics: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the
essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well.” A quote that I thought resonated not only
with the Interschool Cross Country team but with all of the students who took part in our Inter house
Cross Country Carnival a couple of weeks ago.
St. Mary’s had some medal winners on the day, and plenty of top 10 finishers as well which is an
amazing effort. Well done to Ciahn Button for claiming a gold medal in the Year 6 girls event, Hele-
na Faa for winning the Bronze medal in the same event, Elly Sara won the gold medal in the Year 5
girls event, and Safie Matthews took home the gold in the Year 4 girls event. Congratulations!
It is a great
achievement to
be selected for
the Interschool
Team and one
which the stu-
dents can be
very proud of.
Once again St.
Mary’s finished

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Michael Pepper
This Year of Jubilee has special
significance for us as the people
of the Diocese of Broome. We
are celebrating the 50th Anniver-
sary as a Diocese that was pro-
claimed in 1966. Many important
visitors are here this week to par-
ticipate in the Jubilee Mass. St
Mary’s College staff and students
were privileged to participate in
these celebrations as performers,
altar servers, ushers and College
representatives. I thank the staff
for working with the students in
their preparations and congratu-
late the students who have been
outstanding this week with the
various roles they have had to
play. As parents, you can be very
proud of them. The Jubilee Mass brought together thirteen Kimberley Catholic schools and people with
connections to the church in the Kimberley over the past fifty years. Visiting dignitaries included many
Bishops, and clergy from throughout Australia and overseas, including the Holy Father’s representative,
Apostolic Nunzio to Australia, His Excellency Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana and our Western Australian
Arch Bishop, Most Reverend Timothy Costelloe. We congratulate our own Bishop, Bishop Christopher
Saunders who in February celebrated twenty years as the Bishop of the Broome Diocese since his epis-
copal ordination, and in August this year, he will celebrate forty years as a priest. Bishop Saunders re-
ceived a number of special gifts from throughout the Diocese of Broome to mark this very special occa-
sion.
This week we also welcomed members of the Catholic Education Commission WA (CECWA), and exec-
utives from Catholic Education WA (CEWA), including CEWA Executive Director, Dr Tim McDonald. Com-
mission members and executives toured the College on Thursday and held their CECWA meeting on the
secondary campus today. Our students were great ambassadors as tour guides and our guests were
most appreciative of the efforts of all students and staff to make their visit so worthwhile and enjoyable.
Other visitors to our school this week included Mrs Marea Lanki and Mrs Leigh Hexter with Year 10 stu-
dents, Lourdes Leschen, Madalene Craig, Isobel Taylor, Isabelle Passaris from Genazzano FCJ College in
Melbourne who are here participating in the cultural exchange program. Thank you to Michelle Hama-
guchi for her coordination of the exchange. Students, staff and Principal Teneille Smith from Kururrungku
Catholic School were our guests for four days while staying over for the Jubilee Mass and students and
Principal Dean Savoia from Wanalirri Catholic School also toured our College.
The past weeks have been very busy both in
and out of the classrooms. Year 7 to 12 stu-
dents have been busy preparing for and
completing their Mid-Year Examinations. Our
students have also performed brilliantly in
the recent Inter School and Inter House
Cross Country Carnivals and in the WKA Ris-
ing Star Basketball Competition. Thank you
to Mark Dellar, Ed Connor and Nathan Pi-
gram along with all staff who organised and
assisted with these carnivals and thank you
to the many parents who also assisted and
supported our St Mary’s students in the com-
petitions.
The Genazzano girls, Lourdes Leschen, Madalene Craig, Isobel Taylor and Isabelle Passaris would like to
thank the staff and students of St Mary’s College for a wonderful first week of their Kimberley Exchange
Program. We arrived in Broome on Sunday 29 May and were eagerly greeted by our Host Sisters:
Shadeen Matthews, Rose Hamaguchi, Charliesha Mung and Erin Victor. We enjoyed scoring the cross
country and shadowing our Host Sisters to the various classes. The classes were a great time for us to get
to know our Host Sisters and become immersed in the life at St. Mary’s College. We have thoroughly en-
joyed the change of climate and found everyone to be friendly and welcoming. During the week we
visited the Stolen Generation, Goolarri Media, The St. John of God Heritage Centre and enjoyed a great
dinner at the Residential College. We are about to embark on a journey to the opening of the school in
Warmun and in the following week travel to Bidyadanga. Thank you very much to the Host Sisters,
students and teachers who were all been very supportive during our stay.
Reading Olympics comes to SMC! In this year of Olympics, our Middle School students are honing their reading
skills during a new initiative by the English Department to re-introduce reading with purpose into the weekly curriculum. For one period a week, students head down to our new look library for a session of relaxed reading. This is continued through to reading at home
for 3 thirty minute sessions a week. Students also complete a small focus task before, during and after reading. They are free to choose any genre as long as they change genres sufficiently
often. They are awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for the breadth of their reading and the quality and speed of their task. At the end of each term, we will tally the medals and the
winner of each category will receive a prize. We are delighted to report that the initiative has been successful with students looking forward to the reading period!
SECONDARY HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to OBRIEN House who produced a dominant performance across all age groups to win the 2nd whole school House Cross country. On what proved to be a magnificent day for running, age group champions and runners up sprinted around the 3km course. The newly designed high speed corners and chicanes proved a real hit with the lead groups, whilst the change in scenery had many gasping for breath as they moved through the stunning scenery of St Mary’s perimeter fence. Those who excelled on the day are as follows:
INTERSCHOOL SCHOOL CROSS COUTRY Three days later the young champions and their
teams took to the track once again. In almost
picture perfect conditions the students from
SMC pitted their might against the best from
Broome Senior High School. Four boys and four
girls in each age group ran for the greater glory
of their school. SMC had a big job defending
their title as District Champions after a dominant
performance in last year’s inaugural event. True
to form they stepped up to the plate and again
showed why they are unbeaten in this carnival.
A huge congratulations to the interschool team
who won very convincingly 437 to 321 points
and gave SMC a chance to do it three years in a
row next year. Those who excelled on the day
are as follows:

ASPIRE YEAR 11 TRIP
At the beginning of this term, eight Year 11 students went on the Year 11 Aspire trip. This is a trip
run by Aspire UWA to help Year 11’s aspire to attend University after they graduate from Year 12.
These students along with students from across the Kimberley spent four days in Perth.
During this time they took part in activities in the Science and Arts faculties at UWA, visited busi-
nesses in the CBD and spoke
with graduates at these com-
panies about their path to
where they are now. Students
also had time to relax and form
new friendships while having fun
at Bounce and the Movies.
It is an invaluable opportunity
for our students to experience
life in Perth, gain an insight into
being a University student and
find out where that pathway
could take them.
Reminder: Student Drop off and pick up is from Student services on Guy street, not at the administration building on Port Drive, Thank you
Year 10 HASS Pathways
On Friday the 27th of May the year 10 HASS Pathways class went to the Broome Courthouse. We went there as we are learning about the law and the two main types, criminal and civil laws.
A man named Steve Sharratt, the husband of Miss Lisa, is the magistrate in Broome. He showed us around the courthouse with two security officers. They showed us who sits where when they are in court. The magistrate or judge sits on the highest seat in the courtroom. Steve talked about the qualities you need to become someone like him. You need to be able to talk in front of the people, otherwise they’ll think you’re a silly person. He was a lawyer before he became a magistrate.
We went around the back of the courthouse and met some more security officers. They were nice people and some are locals from our community. They showed us the truck they put prisoners in to drive them between Broome and Derby, the back of the truck is called a pod. Then they showed us through the cells. Steve said that if they’ve got someone waiting in the cell they could be waiting a while because they can see up to 100 people a day.
We really enjoyed our fantastic trip to the Broome Courthouse.

Clontarf boys read to Primary Students
Last week the year 10 pathway students from the West Kimberley Clontarf Academy at SMC started a
reading program with the year two students on the primary campus. The boys broke off into small groups
and read different books to the primary students. This was followed by some questions about the main
characters and settings in each book. The aim was to not only practise their reading skills but to work on
their confidence, public speaking and leadership skills. The primary students were excited by the visit from
the Secondary school students, and they will continue to come fortnightly to read to different students
each time.
3E’s Mathematics The Year 3’s have been very busy in mathematics this Term! We are currently learning
about estimating and different types of measurement. In 3E we did a lesson on litres
and millimetres, with water and measuring jugs. Students were grouped and asked to
estimate how much water, in litres or millilitres, they could fill into different
sized containers. At first the students estimations were quite off, however as they
tested their measurements they became more aware of the amount of litres and millili-
tres they could fit into larger or smaller containers. By the end of the class most
groups estimated almost exactly the amount of water that their container could hold.
For homework the year 3’s were to go home and help with cooking so they could prac-
tice their new knowledge in using litres and millilitres. Some great stories came
back to class, as students were making cakes and all sorts of yummy treats to prac-
tice their measuring. Great Job Year 3’s!

Year 5 History Expo For the last two weeks my group has been studying about the military in the first fleet. On the 13th of May 1787 the ships left Britain to travel to Australia on the first fleet. My group did a play on how the military came to Australia .The play was good because at the end of the day we showed our class and they gave us tips for the next time. In the play I was a British soldier and my name was Captain James Rooney.
By Rio Cahill Hi my name is Daithi and with me is Wesley and Leon. We are going to tell you about our history project. Wesley Leon and I were studying skilled tradespeople who came to Australia in the past. Two weeks ago our class 5N were learning about these three people John Macarthur,Donald Chisholm and Nelson Da-vis.We made a play on Friday the 27th of May. Our parents came in and watched us. After recess the year 4 classes came in. It was good. I learnt that working in a group is hard, very hard but it was fun working with my friends also.
By Daithi Wade 5N. Hi my name is Leon. For the last two weeks I have been studying the skilled tradespeople in history. When I was working on the project, I learnt so much! I’ve learnt how to do some printing and I’ve learnt how to write information in my own words. Working in a group was a bit tricky because other people had good ideas and we couldn’t choose which one to do. But I had fun working with my friends.
By Leon Francis This Friday the 27th of May we had a history expo. It was very hard to get ready. Now let me tell you what happened so… We got to pick our group we wanted to be in. I was in a group with Riley,Jye,Mikayla & Miriam we were doing research on Convicts . Firstly we had to plan what we could do. The next day I brought my ipad to record some History News! We called it WHN (World history news) and we did alot of recording. I used my best editing skills. The day before was the hardest day. So I thought we were going to record the play then I found out we were going to act. So we did! It was pretty fun! Thanks for listening. By Jack Melville.
Are you prepared to have fees paid in full by the end of this year? Would you like some assistance?
Term 2 school fees have now been billed and posted to you in the mail.
This year the various camps and excursions have been billed on the fees statement,
now including the Melbourne Exchange, Taiji Exchange, TEE Revision Courses and the
Performing Arts Trips.
We hope this makes it easier to track your progress of payment of all costs. If you would like to pop in and see Amy
Hyett at any time, you are welcome to set up a payment arrangement to start paying these fees in instalments across the remainder of this year.
SMC Drama Crew The SMC Drama Crew enjoys Drama workshops once a week on Thursday’s at lunch time with Miss Emily
in the Drama room. These workshops are for students who love Drama and performance and who want to
learn new skills or build on the skills they already have. The Crew have discovered their inner-performer by
exploring Theatre sports, the conventions of improvisation and the use of status in performance so far this
term. In the last four workshops of the term the SMC Drama Crew will create their own soundscapes and
radio Dramas. All new members welcome!
SCITECH Last Wednesday 25th of May we had a visit from Scitech. They brought in some laptops and ro-bots for us to work with.
We did some coding on the laptops to control the robots. We learnt that something can only be a robot if it can see, hear, move and touch.
We had to make the robots move right, left, forwards and backwards and turn around by coding it on the laptop.
At the end of the lesson we put our robots in the middle of the octagon. If the robot saw the blue
outline of the octagon, it would turn around and move back into the octagon. The last robot in the
octagon would win and my partner and I won.

PFFWA Conference Katrina Comito, Kate McMahon and myself recently travelled to Perth for a Parent & Friends Federation of Western Australia conference. St Mary’s College is an affiliated member of PFFWA. The confer-ence was held at The Crown and we attended a dinner and awards presentation and then a full day conference. By far our highlight of the weekend was meeting and hearing from Peter Bell as he shared his moving and spiritual story with us. We also got to meet other parents from all over the state, hear from the Minister of Education and Shadow Minister, ask questions of Dr Tim McDonald, Director of Catholic Education in WA and pick up some parenting tips about studying and internet safety. We will be sharing what we have learned with other parents as much as we can. The conference is held every two years so be involved in your P&F if you would likt to attend in 2018.
