ON BOARD OUR TRAINS

Our trains offer the opportunity to relive a bygone age of steam travel, evoking the

glamour of the 1930s. The heritage carriages provide a nostalgic journey back in time, where passengers can enjoy the beautiful scenery as plumes of steam drift past the windows, and the locomotive’s whistle can be heard. Those booking First Class seating can look forward to luxurious surroundings, travelling in a comfortable and roomy seat with curtains by the windows. For a little more indulgence, why not consider the First Class Dining experience, with silver service for all meals, each cooked on the train by the elite team of chefs. Enjoy a full English breakfast on the outward journey and a relaxed four course dinner on the way home as the sun sets, the station lights twinkle and Tornado’s reassuring rhythmical exhaust sets the seal on a memorable day out. Alternatively, Standard Class seating is also available for those simply wishing to enjoy the scenery and have an enjoyable day out. A buffet car is available in Standard Class.

THE TALISMANSaturday 6th May - London King’s Cross to York and Darlington

Geoff G

riffiths

The Talisman recalls one of the most famous named trains of the East Coast Main Line,

and one which often featured a Peppercorn A1 Pacific, similar to Tornado, in British Rail days. Passengers destined for the historic city of York can take over four hours to relax and enjoy some of the many attractions it has to offer, including the Shambles, the Minster and the National Railway Museum. Those travelling on to Darlington have the opportunity to visit Darlington Locomotive Works, where Tornado was built and completed in 2008. A new steam

locomotive, Class P2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales is currently under construction at the Works and members of the Trust will be on hand to answer any questions. A Class 90 electric locomotive hastens the train north to Doncaster where Tornado will take over steaming on to York and Darlington. Steam hauled for the entirety of the journey south, passengers can look forward to a spectacular return leg with a high speed run down Stoke Bank, where Class A4 No. 4468 Mallard broke the steam speed record in 1938.

Together we can build this remarkable locomotive!

If we are to remain on schedule to complete No. 2007 Prince of Wales in 2021 we need to wheel the engine in 2017. We have therefore set ourselves the challenge of raising £200,000 through The Mikado Club from 160 supporters each donating £1,000 (plus Gift Aid) to the project in up to eight payments of £125 by standing order. By March 2017 we had already reached 75% of our target.

Building Britain’s most powerful steam locomotive - it’s time to get on-boardIn only three years the P2 Project has over £2.25m pledged, more than 800 regular donors (covenantors), engine frames erected, all 20 wheels and over 40 other castings delivered, the smokebox and cab completed – but there is still a long way to go. With your support, this year will see a rolling chassis completed, tender frames erected, valve gear design completed and the boiler and cylinder block ordered. We still need to raise £5m to complete new Gresley class P2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales. YOU can help to make this a reality sooner rather than later. The last of the renowned Peppercorn class A1 steam locomotives was, tragically, scrapped in 1966. But, a brand new class A1, No.60163 Tornado, was brought to life by a dedicated team of volunteers. Now we need your help to keep Tornado on the main line and pay for future overhauls - the last one cost almost £500,000.The project to build a new Peppercorn class A1 was launched in 1990 and after 18 years of planning, construction and fundraising, the £3 million locomotive was completed in August 2008 at the Trust’s workshop in Darlington.Funds to build Tornado were raised through deeds of covenant, sponsorship (principal sponsor William Cook Cast Products Limited), loans and a bond issue. According to The Times, Tornado is, “a hit across the length and breadth of Britain”. However, for this to continue we still need

your help – and you can come on board for the price of a pint of beer a week! By becoming a regular donor you can play your part in keeping Tornado on the main line and in recognition of your support, you will receive:
