Dear Students, Staff, Family and Friends

It is lovely to be back in Term 3 after my travels in the USA. At our wonderful Presentation Evening, I spoke of some of the insights I gained, hospitality of the people, the contrast between schools and resourcing, the emphasis on university pathways, the great alumni involvement, the philanthropic support of the youth and the “American Dream”. However, my numerous visits to schools and universities reinforced the fact that we are fortunate at St Columban’s. We offer real access and equity to a diverse range of programs. We strategically look at and implement the academic and vocational partnerships. We do not stream from early years and we look to develop all students, hence our motto “Every Student, Every Success”. My trip over 5 weeks took me to New York and across New York State to Cortland, Potsdam, Brockport, Ithaca, Montreal, Boston, Washington, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The last school I visited in Los Angeles had 3000 Latino students and whilst some and in depth learning happening, cuts in funds and resources was limiting outcomes. I was particularly surprised by the low leel of technology resourcing as the school is in California, the home of Silicon Valley. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Ms Cathy Galvin as Acting Principal, Mr Connolly as Acting Deputy and Mr Dean Stevens for stepping up in my absence. Awards Presentation Evening Congratulations to our Dux for 2014, Ruwan Joseph! Ruwan has achieved very high achievement (VHA)levels in all his subjects with the highest possible scores in Maths B and Maths C. Ruwan also entertained us on the evening with his superb ‘John Butler’ guitar performance. We congratulate all the awards winners and performers on the evening – it was a fabulous, very polished, entertaining and celebratory occasion. Congratulations to Mr Darren Crilly, in his event management of our 2014 Awards Presentation Evening - it showcased our celebrations at a very high level. We received many comments of commendation. The performances were of a high standard and very enjoyable - well done and thank you to Ms Nicole Johnson, Mrs Darlene Ferguson, Ms Olivia Blackie, Mr Michael Dougherty, Mrs Raechel Fletcher with the creative liturgy, Ms Lauren Dunn, Ms Hayley Stephen, Ms Andrea Hickey, Mr Eugene Tasker and student team, Mr Steve Ruddy with a superb film, Ms Libby Blain and to all who assisted. The Musicians, Dancers, Singers, Orators were all terrific. The whole production management under Mrs Annette Aarts with all the detail assisted by Mrs Jenny Grehan with the booklets were well done - we are very grateful.

Thank you to Mrs Kate Ruddy and Mrs Denise Newman with all the award winners support, to Mr Pat Greene and team for setup and MMPC looking so good, to Mrs Amanda Schimke and team for catering, to our P&F for the BBQ, to all the coordinators and teachers for their involvement in the ceremony, and to our Captains Dan Cabrera and Katie Iliffe and all of our students who looked superb and contributed in so many ways. Fr Wrex really enjoyed it and we thank him for his wisdom in his fine words and message of all having gifts and appreciating them, and of course his powerful presence. Our past Captains Emma Burgess and Taylor Austin spoke superbly giving a strong message of the importance of hard work and the spirit of opportunity and involvement at St C and how it had helped them in their academic and life challenges, and cultivated their life and passions in different areas. A comment made to me was that the students really looked genuinely happy which made for a great feel as a community! Thank you to every one of you for your contribution - we can feel very proud and have much to celebrate in such wonderful achievements and outcomes with our students and community which we honoured on Wednesday evening! This week has also seen two other special events celebrate 2014 involvement. Firstly, The Year 12 School Based Apprentice/Trainee and Uni/TAFE Graduation Ceremony was held in Bobbio Restaurant on Tuesday morning. Congratulations to the many who graduated with a range of qualifications – 35 with traineeships and 17 with other University/TAFE qualifications. It was a lovely breakfast and many thanks to Amanda Schimke and the catering classes and team. Secondly, the Volunteer dinner was held last night – very glamorous, “Hollywood style” – what fun! Thank you to Ms DeAnn Archie, Mrs Margie Hallinan, Mrs Morel O’Leary, Mr Shaun Morris, Ms Helen Armstrong and student team for the delicious meal. We love this evening to acknowledge the incredible generosity of all our volunteers. They really do build our community and make us strong and exceptional. STUDENT OF THE MONTH—OCTOBER SENIOR Academic: Katie McTaggart Katie’s knowledge and understanding of literature and complex concepts and ideologies studied during Year 12 is exemplary; demonstrating excellent creative and critical thinking skills and her ability to synthesise and apply her learning to every task successfully and creatively. Her determination, positive attitude, resilience and passion to achieve throughout the year have resulted in Katie achieving her goal of a VHA in English. Sporting: Louie Beatty has competed in the Taekwondo National Championships representing QLD and has also represented. Louie was selected to represent Australia at the 2014 Word Taekwondo Federation Commonwealth Championships, which is being held in Edinburgh, Scotland from 14 to 16 November. Cultural: Corey Fysh volunteered his assistance, across both days at this years’ Concert Band Spectacular. He helped out at the sign-in desk, greeting each school with a positive, welcoming attitude, managed the ushering of schools and was responsible for keeping both days running on time. He represented the College in such a professional manner and his assistance is greatly appreciated. ‘The Collection’ – Ruwan Joseph, Lewis Zedde, Ryan Rosenberger, Josh Nicholson and Dan Cabrera These boys have always taken excellent advantage of the St Columban’s music program provided to them. They formed their band in Year 8 after their first College music camp. For the past five years they have performed at many College functions, Villanova and other outside venues. They have always organised and self managed their own rehearsals, performances and song choices. Through their commitment to music, willingness to perform when requested and their good natures they have proven themselves to be excellent cultural ambassadors of the College. School Spirit: Slade Blunt and Chelsea Robers Slade Blunt is an excellent and consistent contributor to his PC and is an integral and valued member of Duhig House. At the recent Duhig breakfast Slade actively demonstrated house and school spirit where he willingly stayed back to help clean up without being asked. He is to be commended for being a positive role model for younger students and peers alike. Chelsea Robers receives this award for her continued dedication to the College through her participation in the PC daily prayer, through her encouragement of others in all aspects of College life and her kind and compassionate nature.

Voc Ed: Georgia Scells and Courtney Payne Georgia Scells is to be congratulated for her commitment to her VET studies. Having performed outstandingly at the QP150 dinner as wells at the Regional Council Volunteers Dinner and in class, she takes a lead role in team activities, also volunteered to help with a function over the break. Her recent work placement was very successful where she gained employment at the Tattersalls Club. Courtney Payne is a Year 10 student completing Cert II in Hairdressing as an external student, showing outstanding commitment to learning the knowledge and skills required in the hairdressing industry. She has willingly volunteered her time on several occasions to showcase the St Columban’s College hairdressing program, and is to be congratulated on her recent shortlisting for a school based apprenticeship with Stefan’s. MIDDLE Academic: Courtney Staples receives this award for her positive and enthusiastic approach to every class. Courtney has achieved excellent results this year, well above what she was achieving in Primary School. This is due to her hard work, her willingness to work with others and her intuition to know when to ask for assistance. Sporting: Kathleen Nichols and Ella Connolly Congratulations to Ella and Kathleen who have just returned from representing QLD at the National Touch Football Championships contested by all states and territories. They both played well all week and were integral members of the team. During the round games the QLD team lost to NSW 6:7, but restored the Maroons pride with a 7:2 win in the final on Friday. Well done to Ella and Kathleen on their selection in the team and congratulations on their gold medal in the under 15s age group. Cultural: Bella Robers has been working really well and maintains enthusiasm in Artforce. She worked well with visiting artist Julia Bell and showed great skill when creating ‘cane sculptures’. Bella always assists others with their artworks and shows a keen attitude when creating works of art. School Spirit: S iobhan Bennett has attended every environment committee meeting, supported every clean up of the Duncan Street drain throughout 2014, she is also a willing helper in every initiative the committee has undertaken and has been a person of integrity in all these commitments. She epitomizes ALBI – Act with respect, Learn for life, Be caring for the environment and In spirit, tradition and community may we soar like the eagle. In closing, today we celebrated World Teachers’ Day! We are so proud of our teaching staff at St Columban’s as reflected in their enormous and so important contribution to our society. College Notices to Parents/Guardians

Medial Alert! At present in the College we have a student who is immunosuppressed, meaning that this student has a lower immunity system and cannot fight infections in the ‘normal’ way. We have been advised by the Royal Children’s Hospital that, as such, it is extremely important that we are aware of any other student who may have measles, chicken pox and shingles, as the virus that causes these diseases could make this student extremely unwell. We ask that if your child has one of these illnesses, to please contact the College. Medicine is available that will lessen the side effect of exposure to such infections, but it does need to be taken as soon as possible after contact with that illness. Please be very aware that no student is at risk because of the presence of this student at the College.

MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING PROGRAM Australian Mobile Recycling was founded in September 2011. Their aim is to collect as many used and unwanted mobile phones as possible. All mobile phones will be recycled for reuse, which means they will be refurbished for resale. Handsets are restored to factory conditions and all Sim card and memory cards are destroyed. Any phones that are beyond repair will be broken down into their constituent parts and recycled by Australian licensed recyclers. For our recycling efforts our school will receive $3 for every mobile phone returned. Your contribution will not only raise money for our school community but also help the environment in a positive way by reducing waste.
