They are excellent actors, dancers and singers. Both girls are performing to a very high standard in such demanding roles and finding it exciting, challenging and great fun. Working with a number of high profile performers such as Anthony Warlow and Todd McKenney is a wonderful experience for them. A number of families and teachers from the school will be attending the performances and enjoying the success of the girls. It is such an achievement and privilege for Milgate PS to have two students with roles in the musical „Annie‟. There are a also number of newspaper articles and photos about the production on display at the school office. WORKING BEE We had a fantastic response to the Prep 2 working bee on Sunday. Many parents and children worked together to put new sand into the sandpit in the Prep area, painted seats and tables, cleaned the cubby house (inside and out), mulched gardens, weeded, pruned, spread mulch under the play equipment and much more. Thank you to all the families who attended and gave up their time. The area looks wonderful and it certainly contributed to improving the environment for the students.

SUNSMART FOR WINTER As schools and early childhood services across Victoria prepare for the onset of the autumn and winter

months SunSmart is encouraging everyone to get some sun exposure during their week to help with

vitamin D levels

Although ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer it is also the best

natural source of vitamin D essential for strong bones muscles and overall health

Sun protection is required when UV Index levels reach three and above In Victoria average UV levels

fall below three between May and August making it a great time to get outside for some sun to help

with vitamin D levels Here are some ideas to help you

Check UV levels for your area by visiting the SunSmart UV Alert in the weather section of your daily

newspaper or at wwwsunsmartcomauultraviolet_radiationsunsmart_uv_alert

Download the free SunSmart UV Alert widget to your school or service website and encourage the

use of the SunSmart smartphone app

Why study Chess Many schools have introduced Chess into their school curriculum Is it just another fad or are there

real proven benefits from studying the game

Active learning Chess is an active learning situation The formal teaching component of a lesson is usually about one quarter of the lesson time and even this time is fully interactive with children being required to analyse situations and decide on a series of outcomes lsquoWhat ifrsquo scenarios are very much a part of teaching chess Because of the active nature of the game chess lessons are fun

Learning at onersquos own rate In a mixed age group chess club teachers often find that the most advanced chess students are not the oldest in the class The ability to understand and progress at onersquos own rate is one of the major advantages of learning chess and it is not uncommon to find a grade 2 or 3 student who can hold their own and in fact beat most of the adults that they are likely to play

In the words of one of our Year 3 students [John B] who had just soundly beaten his teacher ldquoDonrsquot worry Irsquove been learning chess formally now for 4 yearsrdquo

Analysing without the aid of reading and writing In the game of chess a child mentally analyses a situation and then makes a move All of this is done without the aid of reading writing or comprehension

Because of this we feel chess is a window into the brain of a young child

Even before a child has acquired the skills of reading writing and comprehension they can soar ahead in areas of reasoning logical deduction and analysis Because of this chess teachers occasionally find a difference in which children they consider to be exceptional and those that are performing well in the more traditional areas of learning We have found over the years that chess can provide an outlet for those able students who are not finding fulfilment in the classroom

Crossover into other areas of ability There is a lot of literature and much anecdotal evidence that suggests students who learn chess gain an advantage in areas such as reading comprehension and maths If you would like to know more about this we can point you in the right direction in the literature

Social development In a game of chess it doesnrsquot matter if the person on the other side of the board in 8 or 80 and one of the side benefits of the game is that children are able to interact with adults teachers parents and grandparents in a mature manner In many chess clubs the mature interaction of the students with the teachers is one of the most pleasant aspects of the club

An introduction into the wider chess community Many schools take their chess students to the interschool tournaments that are available in Melbourne These tournaments are an amazing spectacle of intellectual energy fun and excitement The children love these days playing chess meeting other students and just having fun

Children enjoy learning One of the easy things for us as chess teachers is that the students enjoy the classes and when students enjoy something they learn with all the benefits that brings
