Dear reader, Welcome to this new edition of Infosylva. There is less than a week to go to the opening of the XIV World Forestry Congress in Durban, South Africa, one of this year’s most important global forestry gatherings. Pre-Congress events covering a broad and stimulating range of issues will set the scene for the Congress’s week-long programme (from 7–11 September) of high-profile, professionally, technically and culturally rewarding debates and activities. You can find information on the key discussions and main highlights at the links published in this issue. Learn how the global forestry community will give substance to the theme Forests and people: investing in a sustainable future, to produce a new vision of global forestry. (In English - but every webpage of the programme is also available in Spanish and French) FAO and the European Union will partner on a 48-month project in Haiti to combat desertification, by supporting the development of sustainable management models of natural resources. Incorporating family farming and good agricultural practices such as agroforestry and agricultural production diversification, the project aims to improve farmers’ livelihoods and generate environmental benefits. (In English and French) In the Gambia, the validation of the country component of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative and the Action against Desertification project marks a new phase in efforts to improve the livelihoods of rural and forest-dependent peoples. The country’s engagement in the project is expected to result in the more sustainable management and use of the country’s natural resources. (In English) The results of a new study carried out in Spain suggest that the Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) has a high resistance to fire. The study describes the tree’s suitability as a preferred species in fire barrier management in Mediterranean countries, a region which has experienced devastating outbreaks of wildfires. (In Spanish) At the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in Paris later this year, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with other highly-forested countries, will
request economic support to finance the preservation of its forest, the largest in Africa, in the global fight against climate change. World Forestry Congress 14th World Forestry Congress Durban, South Africa 07-11 September 2015 Introduction to the thematic focus The central theme of the XIV World Forestry Congress (WFC) is Forests and People: Investing in a Sustainable Future. The aim is to show that investment in forestry is an investment in people and, in turn, an investment in sustainable development. The XIV WFC will emphasize the role of forests in income generation, employment creation and equity and the vital links between forests and climate change, biodiversity conservation and sustainable water resources. Bosnia and Herzegovina learns ways of managing disaster risk FAO News Europe and Central Asia 27/08/15 With natural disasters on the increase worldwide, and as disasters grow in both scope and severity, many countries are desperate to find better ways of managing disaster risk. Bosnia and Herzegovina has found some answers with the recent conclusion of an FAO project on that very subject, made possible thanks to a grant of US$ 45,700 from the Czech Republic. Increasing awareness of forests and natural disasters in the Pacific FAO News for Asia and the Pacific 14/08/15 Countries in the Pacific Islands are susceptible to natural disasters. While disasters have always occurred, indications suggest that their frequency and intensity are increasing. In particular, climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and intensity of disaster events in the future.

Le projet sera lancé à Jérémie le 19 août 2015 dans le cadre de la commémoration de la Journée Mondiale de l´Aide Humanitaire des Nations Unies.
New FAO publications Pulp and paper capacities The annual FAO survey of world pulp and paper capacities is based on figures received from correspondents in many countries. A computer questionnaire was used in the enquiry, and the data were stored and processed by computer. The following are some features of the presentation: country tables for pulp and paper are presented on one page; grade tables show volume of production capacity by country, for each product and product aggregate code; and production tables by country.
New forestry publications with FAO collaboration ETFRN News 57 – Effective forest and farm producer organizations This latest edition of ETFRN News contains more than 200 pages of stories from local producer organizations, associations and federations, and from those that speak for them at national and international levels. Reporting on issues of inclusiveness, this is also reflected in the authorship, with most of the 80 contributing (co)authors from the Global South, representing NGOs, UN organizations, government bodies and private companies as well as producer organizations, a third of them women. The result is a compilation of experiences that adds significantly to a growing body of knowledge.
New Infographics Soils are the foundation for vegetation Soils and vegetation have a reciprocal relationship. Fertile soil encourages plant growth by providing plants with nutrients, acting as a water holding tank, and serving as the substrate to which plants anchor their roots. In return, vegetation, tree cover and forests prevent soil degradation and desertification by stabilizing the soil, maintaining water and nutrient cycling, and reducing water and wind erosion.

Gambia: community forestry managers, others trained on market analysis All Africa 19/08/15 Organized by All Gambia Forestry Platform, the training is part of a project funded by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Forest and Farm Facility (FFF), a small grant project. The training was designed to create and develop market for the beneficiary communities; notably Kartong in the Kombo South and Tumanitenda in the Kombo East districts respectively. Major conservation effort results in protection for northern forestland Ashland Daily Press 23/08/15 The Brule-St. Croix Legacy Forest has been set aside for sustainable forest management for years to come, thanks to a land purchase made with private, state and federal funding. The effort means that forestland spanning several counties, comprising more than 67,000 acres, and featuring 47 miles of trails and over 80 lakes will be protected from future development.
Researchers: Drought creating California 'ghost forests' KCRA 18/08/15 Federal researchers said they have found some of the greatest numbers yet of trees killed by the ongoing California drought. In a report released Monday evening, researchers for the U.S. Forest Service estimated 6.3 million trees have died in an area of the Sierra Nevada foothills stretching from Placerville
to Porterville. Models for predicting carbon levels in Central African forests Phys.org 17/08/15 Up to now, some 400 trees per hectare needed to be measured and identified on the ground in order to measure the carbon level of a forest in Central Africa. On the basis of the model developed in the project, the researchers have been able to show that, by measuring just 5% of these individual trees, it is possible to assess the carbon level of the forest population with a margin of error below 15%. The forests of the world are in serious trouble, scientists report The Washington Post 20/08/15 The world’s forests are in serious trouble, according to a suite of papers out in this week’s issue of the journal Science. The research systematically examines how forests are being damaged by the combined impacts of a changing climate and more human incursions. Tropical forests almost the size of India set to be axed by 2050 Reuters 24/08/15 The Washington-based Center for Global Development, using satellite imagery and data from 100 countries, predicted 289 million hectares (714 million acres) of tropical forests would be felled by 2050. The results will have dangerous implications for accelerating climate change, the center's study said. Tropical forests totalling size of India at risk of being cleared, study warns The Guardian 25/08/15 Tropical forests covering an area nearly the size of India are set to be destroyed in the next 35 years, a faster rate of deforestation than previously thought, a study warned on Monday. Tropical forests will still exist in 2100 – but they will be a sorry sight Times Live 24/08/15 By the end of the century, the world’s remaining tropical forests will be left in a fragmented, simplified, and degraded state.
