Methodological debates in economic

sciences

The second seminar in the Meth-odological debate in economic sciences series–The controversy over para-

digms in management sciences–was held on 12 June 2015. The fi rst part consisted of speeches given by prof. dr. hab. Łukasz Sułkowski (Jagiel-lonian University), prof. dr. hab. Piotr Płoszajski (Warsaw School of Econom-ics) and prof. dr. hab. Piotr Banaszyk (Poznan University of Economics).

Professor Łukasz Sułkowski fo-cused on the issue of multimethodol-ogy, multiparadigmity and fragmen-tation of paradigms in management sciences, with particular emphasis on the cognitive values of currently practiced approaches such as non-positivist functionalist paradigm, interpretive symbolic paradigm, criti-

cal paradigm (CMS) and postmodern approach. Professor Piotr Płoszajski emphasized, among others, that management sciences need to move from the Newtonian paradigm to the quantum theory of management and recognition of the role of metaphor in acquiring knowledge, due to the fact that the current social and eco-nomic systems are characterized by instability, non-linearity and deter-ministic chaos. A PUE scientist, prof. Piotr Banaszyk, referring to the state of paradigmatic-method-ological liberalism, pointed out that the social nature of management sciences causes the entanglement of the studied events and processes in individual and group interests, including political factors, while the

practical aspect of these sciences leads to a lack of constancy of the study area, which changes due to the intervention of researchers.

The second part of the seminar was a discussion about the state of meth-odology in management sciences. This debate was jointly led and commented by dr hab. Dominika Latusek-Jurczak (Kozminski University in Warsaw) and dr hab. Sylwester Białowąs (Poznan University of Economics).

The seminar was organized by dr hab. Halina Zboroń and dr hab. Barbara Pogonowska (a lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Philosophy) under the patronage of the Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, prof. dr hab. Maciej Żukowski.

Workshops for participants of Doctoral

Seminars in EnglishSpecial trainings, lectures, and meetings with promoters – this is how the workshops for participants of the another DSE edition looked like. The classes were attended by over thirty students from Israel.

The workshops were held in early July in the building of the Poznan University of Economics. The high-light of the event was a visit of Ruth

Cohen-Dar - Vice-Ambassador of Israel to Poland. During her stay in Poznan, Ruth Cohen-Dar met with students of the project and PUE authorities- Rec-

Students from China at PUE

Center for Studies in English organized a summer school for stu-dents from three Chinese universities: Guangdong University of Finance, Guangdong AIB Polytechnic Col-lege and the East China Institute of Technology. During their two-week stay (from 19 July to 1 August 2015), 41 Chinese students and six tutors had an opportunity to get some information on the education system

in Poland, and learn about the basic mechanisms of Polish and European economy, Polish culture, history, and Polish-Chinese relations. Students also visited Poznan and its surroundings and learned the basics of the Polish language. Additional attractions were visits in three Poznań companies: Volkswagen Poznań Sp. Ltd., Kompa-nia Piwowarska SA and Poznan Inter-national Fair. For most of the Chinese

guests it was their fi rst trip to Europe and to Poland. Everything was totally diff erent than in China, but I felt at home here thanks to very friendly and warm people around us – summed up Kyle, one of the students from Guang-dong AIB Polytechnic College. Some summer school students are willing to return to Poland and continue their studies at the Poznan University of Economics.

At the beginning of the new academic year, the Poznan University of Economics will start collaboration with the University of Lorraine in Nan-cy. Its benefi ciaries will be students of doctoral programmes.

Thanks to the signed agreement, it will be possible to complete a part of the studies at a partner university and prepare doctoral theses in the formula of double doctorates in co-supervision.

PUE receives funding within the

Erasmus + programme

Poznan University of Economics is the only public institution of higher education in Poznan that received funding in the competition of ap-plications submitted within Action 1: “Learning mobility with partner coun-

tries” in the Erasmus + programme. The project involves collaboration with an existing partner of PUE–Ar-menian State University of Economics (Armenia)–and a new partner which is the Azerbaijan University of Econom-

ics (Azerbaijan). The cooperation will be based on bilateral agreements. The project assumes the exchange of students as well as teachers who will give lectures.

Fields of study recognized by Ministry of

Science and Higher Education

Ministry of Science and Higher Education chose 21 fi elds of study available in Polish institutions of higher education that are going to re-ceive additional funding for improving the quality of education. Two criteria were taken into account: conducting high-quality research plus scientifi c category A or A+, and a distinction from The Polish Accreditation Com-mittee. Three fi elds of study available at the Poznan University of Economics have received additional funding:

• Informatics and econometrics (Faculty of Informatics and Electronic Economy) 927,5 thousand

• Social policy (Faculty of Eco-nomics): 265,3 thousand

• Commodity science (Faculty of Commodity Science): 805,3 thousand

The Faculty of Informatic and Electronic Economy educates students on informatics and econometrics. Additional funds will help to interna-tionalize the studies. There are plans to launch a new fi eld of study in fi nancial engineering in cooperation with Universite de Lorraine Nancy et Metz and ISEG – Universidade de Lisboa. Ad-ditionally, PUE was invited to join the group of institutions of higher educa-tion from Eastern and Central Europe

that conduct master’s programmes in the fi eld of public statistics (project European Master in Offi cial Statistics — EMOS).

The Faculty of Economics will use the additional resources to increase the number of classes conducted by practitioners of social policy. These classes will be prepared by, among others, managers dealing with retire-ment funds. The donation will also allow to conduct certifi ed courses of statistics programs.

The Faculty of Commodity Science is planning to purchase research equipment and chemical reagents for laboratories.

educational programmes in European business schools. Once again, Executive MBA programme of the Poznan Univer-sity of Economics has been awarded. It is one of two programmes in Poland (next to the Executive MBA Warsaw Uni-versity of Technology) which received this prestigious accreditation.

European Programme Accredita-tion System (EPAS) is one of the most respected accreditation awarded to specifi c programmes, not institutions.

The aim of the EPAS accreditation is to identify the leading MBA programmes in Europe and thus to provide busi-nesses and students with objective information about the programmes that meet the highest quality criteria. Currently, EPAS accreditation is the only international accreditation

system that includes the possibil-ity of evaluation of individual study programmes from the fi rst to the third cycle (including MBA programs) in the fi eld of management and business.

INTERVIEW

Commodity science has been

taught at our University for

65 years now, but for many, this

area of research is still a mystery.

What is commodity science?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Commodity science is an interdisciplinary fi eld that combines economic, technical and natural elements. Its main subject of interest is a product and its nature, resulting from a series of operational and management processes. Mod-ern commodity science pays special attention to the process of product design and translating the require-ments of consumers into strictly defi ned technological and qualitative parameters.

Commodity science is one of the

most specifi c fi elds of study. Not

only do the graduates earn an engi-

neering degree, but they also spend

a lot of time in laboratories. Why

is this science closer to economics

than to natural sciences?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: The answer to this question lies in the simple statement: “any trade begins with the product.” We can’t sell something until we have produced it. Therefore, commodity science is a fi eld that is primary to other economic sciences. At the same time, they are closely related. It determines the quality of the products in the process of storage or transport. Commodity science also closely cooperates with marketing and allows to predict new trends.

As a fi eld of study, commodity sci-

ence has existed at PUE since 1950.

What led to its establishment?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: At the beginning of its existence, the University taught only one subject of general economics character. But it also involved technical subjects. Each student had to take mandatory classes in physics or electronics. It didn’t matter if they were studying to work in accounting, fi nance or international trade. It was not until the late 1940s when one day, Józef Pieńkowski, Maciej Wiewiórowski i Marian Durski came to the class-room and divided all students into two groups. One group were sup-posed to study trade and the second one commodity science.

The Faculty of Commodity Science

was founded just three years later.

What caused such a rapid develop-

ment of this science at that time?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: In my opin-ion, it was associated with the political will. From the point of view of then local authorities, education in the fi eld of macro- and microeconomics was completely unnecessary, because the state controlled the economy. How-ever, there was a demand for people who could carry out quality control, fi nd errors in the production process and indicate which workers perform poorly. Trade Inspection and the Cen-tral Institute for Standardization were established at that time. That’s why it was so important to educate future commodity science specialists.

Over the course of the last 65 years,

there has been huge progress in

civilization. How did this fi eld of

study and its programme change

over time?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: The change has been signifi cant. We need to bear in mind that when Commodity Science was established as a fi eld of study, it did not contain elements of econom-ics. It was a natural science then. It was only in the 1960s, when the Fac-ulty of Commodity Science merged with the Faculty of Commerce, when subjects such as statistics, demogra-phy and history of economic thought appeared in the study programme. In the 1970s, the programme was com-

INTERVIEW

plemented with technical subjects such as materials science, process engineering and technical drawing.

And how does this fi eld of study

look like today? What are its pros-

pects for development?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Currently, it is a kind of fusion between economic, technical and natural subjects. If I were to estimate, I would say that their share is 30%, 30% and 40%, respectively. And how it is going to look like in a few years? I think this division will be preserved. It will not get closer to other economic sciences, that’s for sure. Currently, the market needs people who know the natural and technical issues, but also have knowledge of economics. That is why Commodity Science will survive and it will be doing just fi ne.

The Faculty of Commodity Science

off ers three fi elds of study to its stu-

dents. Do the other two also have

a bright future?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Defi nitely! In my opinion, Management and Production Engineering will do even better, thanks to the expansion of management issues. And it doesn’t focus just on the process or the prod-uct, but also marketing management. Product and Process Management is a completely new fi eld of study con-

ducted in English; it’s on the border of economics, technology, but primarily natural science. The study programme will include subjects such as envi-ronmental protection, sustainable development and analysis of a life cycle of a product.

What knowledge do the graduates

have and where can they fi nd a job?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Our students are taught primarily quality control of raw materials, quality control of proc-esses and preparation of recipes. They are prepared to write expert’s opinions, they can carry out research, but above all, they are able to interpret the re-sults. Today, many commodity science specialists work in the departments of quality management, product design or quality control.

Graduates of the Faculty of Com-

modity Science are very successful

in their work. Who would be the

best ambassador of Commodity

Science?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: Defi nitely, it is worth to mention Krzysztof Panek who started his career in the brewing industry and is currently Chairman of the Board for Browar Fortuna. Also, we shouldn’t be forgetting Andrzej Wituski- former Mayor of the City of Poznan and originator of the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. Few people know

that he also graduated from the Faculty of Commodity Science.

The Poznan University of Economics

is not the only institution educating

in the fi eld of commodity science.

Why choose our University?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: I don’t want to brag, but we are an absolute leader when it comes to teaching commod-ity science. Basically, other institutions copy what we come up with. Also, we have gained enormous interna-tional recognition. Every two years, we hold an international conference Current Trends in Commodity Science, attended by the whole world of com-modity science.

Part of the celebration of the 65th

anniversary of Commodity Science is

already behind us. Do you plan any

other events in the new academic

year?

prof. Ryszard Zieliński: The main part of the celebration was held in May, this year. It included Commodity Science Youth Day and a national conference of scientifi c circles. In early September, one more international conference was organized-”Process and Product Management,” and it summarized the whole anniversary event.

Thank you.
