NSW netball association limited 2006> annual report

A year in review …… In sitting down to write this Annual Report it becomes increasingly difficult to decidewhat order in which to acknowledge events and individuals and their achievements throughout our year. They are all of equal importance to our organisation and its membership.

This past year has seen us move further along the path to achieving a more professionally runorganisation and one whose governance offers equity for all its members. We still have further work tobe completed on our processes and policies but 2006 saw us make major strides in this area. We sawchanges in our professional staff and a more strident move for the Board to be strategic in its thinking andendeavours. Our improved fiscal management and accountability is reflected in our Annual FinancialReport and I commend all of those involved for their commitment and diligence in improving this area ofour operation.

We again enjoyed a very full and fruitful year; all that planning certainly pays off when you look at theresults! Our calendar of regional and metropolitan meetings continues to develop and provide the Boardwith tremendous feedback on matters of significance to Districts.

The year started with a flurry of successful coaching and umpiring activities prior to the commencementof what was surely our most successful State League competition to date, culminating in the presentationof that magnificent Waratah Cup in Division 1. To all those Districts, both metropolitan and regionally, whosupported the State League competitions I say thank you for your tremendous support in showcasing thenetballing talent around the State.

At the National level we have consistently achieved players into the Australian Open and 21’s squads, players that have gone on to represent at the Commonwealth Games and the Test Series against NewZealand. They are wonderful women and we salute them – Liz Ellis, Catherine Cox, Selina Gilsenan,Alison Broadbent, Mo’onia Gerard, Susan Pratley. Kimberley Green, Alex Harding, Joanne Sutton,Samantha May and Leah Shoard talents are coming to the fore and we have emerging talent via Erin Bell,Maryanne Hamilton, Lauren Russell, Courteney Tairi and Elly Willan reinforcing the strength and depth oftalent in NSW.

The strength of the Waratah was on display at Penrith for the Underage National Championships in Aprilunder Tracey Robinson and Lenore Blades, and in Adelaide in September for the 21 and Unders NationalChampionships under the watchful eye of Anita Keelan. We were consecutive Champions in the 17 andUnders and Runners-Up in the 19s and Under and third in the 21 and Unders. Again all of our playersand personnel displayed discipline, courage and sportsmanship on and off the court, giving nothing buttheir best, and it is indeed a pleasure to travel with them and be recognised as part of the NSWcontingent. A special thanks to all of the parents, grandparents and supporters who travel any distanceto support our teams. I know that the players enjoy and appreciate your efforts.

To our wonderful Districts – Penrith, Newcastle, Charlestown and Lakeside that hosted our flagshipevents – the State and State-Age Championships – our sincere thanks. To all the District personnel, ourNSW Committees – Events, Umpires and Selections, and Staff our sincere thanks for applying your skilland expertise to ensure both of these events exceed our expectations.

Our Annual Dinner has become a “must attend” on the calendar. Our special guests in attendance on thenight commented on how special an evening it was and their thanks at being asked to be a part of it. Theacknowledgement of joint winners, for the first time, for the Nance Kenny Medal, Katie Walker and AppleeKannengiesser together with Liz Ellis being named the Marilyn Melhuish CBT Player of the Year Awardand Margaret Corbett and Terese Kennedy being inducted into the Hall of Fame all made for greatacknowledgement through physical presence, written word or a video with the waves lapping in thebackground. To Anne Sargeant and Gail Eckert our sincere thanks in making this night unforgettable.

Our time honoured Anne Clark Service Award recipients did not disappoint; it was wonderful to watch thereaction as the names were announced, these wonderful ladies who had no idea that they were to receiverecognition for their years of dedicated service to our sport at the District level – we salute you – CathyAird, Val Brunker, Beverley Dew, Kay Smith and Rhonda Swindale.

To our many corporate and individual sponsors to our organisation, we acknowledge and salute you foryour ongoing support – the Commonwealth Bank, the TAB, McDonald’s Hunter Franchisees, SydneyOlympic Park Authority, Court Craft, Denton Homes, Mitre Sports, Victor Sports, NBN, West Leagues ClubNewcastle, NIB Health Funds, and Cartridge World.

We have had a very healthy representation from our umpiring ranks within the CBT Pool of Umpires andumpires selected to attend the National Championships. We especially acknowledge Sharon Kelly whoattended the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March. In a year that has seen a new AA umpire, more Level 2 Coaches and many more individuals gaining accreditation and badges below this elite levelour technical areas are to be congratulated on their results.

A tremendous amount of work has been done on what we hope will be the future home of Netball NSW.To those individuals, and especially Rodney Watson, for your ongoing endeavours on our behalf we thankyou. It is extremely important for our sport that we push forward with the concept of “Netball in the Park”if we are to continue to develop and grow our sport to keep pace with the ever increasing number of sportsthat we are competing with for funds and space.

I now find myself at our CBT Teams – the Sydney TAB Swifts and the McDonald’s Hunter Jaegers. Weon the Board of Netball NSW do not differentiate between these two teams, they are both very much astrong part of Netball NSW. They both provide through the development teams, Jays and Storm, opportunities for our up and coming players to put their toe into the CBT pool. They experienced verydifferent but positive years and we are proud of them all.

The McDonald’s Hunter Jaegers came through a very difficult period under the watchful and progressiveeye of Jon Fletcher; a year where they experienced all the emotions of being up and then down, of beatingthe Adelaide Thunderbirds in an absolute thriller; of again experiencing the best crowds in the country. Ayear to build upon and a springboard to bigger and better outcomes in 2007.

To the magnificent Sydney TAB Swifts – an undefeated season. That just about says it all – all that hardwork and planning paid dividends for a team that was determined to make amends for the previousseason end. The benchmark has certainly been raised.

I look forward to 2007 and what lies ahead for our sport and I would like to thank the Districts, ourhardworking staff and the Board for the support and friendship that has been extended to me over thepast year. To all that have contributed in some small way over the past year thank you for making oursport that much better for your contribution.

I trust that you will all be a part of the next instalment in the ongoing development and forward movementof Netball NSW. See you around the courts.

NOTES TO AND FORMING PART OF THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2006

NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONTINUED)d. Property, Plant and Equipment

Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less, whereapplicable, any accumulated depreciation.Plant & EquipmentThe carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually by directors to ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from these assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows that willbe received from the assets’ employment and subsequent disposal. The expected netcash flows have been discounted to their present values in determining recoverableamounts.Subsequent costs are included in the asset’s carrying amount or recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate, only when it is probable that future economic benefitsassociated with the item will flow to the group and the cost of the item can bemeasured reliably. All other repairs and maintenance are charged to the income statement during the financial period in which they are incurred. The carrying amountof plant and equipment is reviewed annually by Officers of the Company to ensure itis not in excess of the recoverable amount from those assets.DepreciationThe depreciable amount of all fixed assets including building and capitalised leaseassets, but excluding freehold land, is depreciated on a straight line basis over their useful lives to the Company commencing from the time the asset is held ready foruse. Leasehold improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either theunexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements. Itemsof property, plant and equipment, are depreciated over their estimated useful lives. The diminishing value method is used. The depreciation rates for each class of asset are: Class of Non Current Asset Depreciation Rate

Buildings 5% straight lineBuilding extensions 5% straight lineFurniture and fittings 9% - 20% straight line Equipment 9% - 20% straight line Motor vehicles 22.5% straight line Leased motor vehicles 22.5% straight lineThe assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at each balance sheet date.An asset’s carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount ifthe asset’s carrying amount is greater than its estimated recoverable amount.Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with thecarrying amount. These gains or losses are included in the income statement. Whenrevalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation reserve relating to thatasset are transferred to retained earnings.

e. LeasesLeases of fixed assets, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to theownership of the asset, but not the legal ownership, are transferred to the Company, are classified as financial leases. Finance leases are capitalised, by recording anasset and a liability equal to the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Leased assets are depreciated on astraight line basis over the estimated useful lives where it is likely that the entity willobtain ownership of the asset, or over the term of the lease. Lease payments areallocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for the period.

NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONTINUED)j. Financial Instruments (Continued)

Fair value

Fair value is determined based on current bid prices for all quoted investments.Valuation techniques are applied to determine the fair value for all unlisted securities, including recent arm’s length transactions, reference to similar instruments and optionpricing models.

Impairment At each reporting date, the Company assesses whether there is objective evidencethat a financial instrument has been impaired. In the case of available-for-salefinancial instruments, a prolonged decline in the value of the instrument is consideredto determine whether impairment has arisen. Impairment losses are recognised in theincome statement.

k. Impairment of Assets

At each reporting date, the Company reviews the carrying values of its tangible andintangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets havebeen impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use, is compared to the asset’s carrying value. Any excess of the asset’s carrying value overits recoverable amount is expensed to the income statement.

Impairment testing is performed annually for assets with indefinite lives.

Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the Company estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which theasset belongs.

l. Comparative figures

Where appropriate comparatives have been restated to ensure that they arecompatible with disclosures in the financial statements for the year ended 31December 2006.
