MEDLINEPLUS CONNECT TASK FORCE

What is MedlinePlus Connect?

• Behind the scenes system that connects information in the electronic health record to information in MedlinePlus

• Works for diagnoses, lab tests and medications

Potential Audiences

• Medical librarians• Regional Extension Centers (RECs)• Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)• HIT personnel– Hospitals and other healthcare organizations– Community college HIT program faculty

• Vendors (NLM)

Potential Barriers

• Lack of awareness (even at basic MedlinePlus level)

• Fear that “free” equates to low quality or extra work

• Vendors – no financial incentive

What have we done so far?

• Defined audiences• Key informant interviews• Convened day-long meeting – Consensus that toolkit would be most helpful– Brainstormed contents of toolkit– Future meetings will continue the work

What have we done so far?

• Phone interviews with community college librarians & faculty

• LibGuide for community college library training, April 2012 – 4 One-Hour Classes: PubMed, MedlinePlus,

• Roundtable discussion at AzLA• Site visits and training in Hawaii in April 2013

Future Plans for Community College Outreach
