When asked to direct The Scarlet Pimpernel, I was given a perusal copy which lacked a cover. On the cover of a script, there is often a brief description of the play, such as "a comedy in 2 acts" or "a drama:' In the case of The Scarlet Pimpernel, I was not certain what it was, as it was described only as a play by Baroness Orczy and adapted by Beverley Cross. After several readings, I determined this play to be a melodrama, as it contained the stock characters of a villain, a hero, and a distressed damsel. It has been my experience that melodrama is only laughable when played to the extreme. This has been our goal as a company: to make it extremely laughable. We have sought to extract humor from every situation, be it comic or tragic. This troupe of actors assembled has risen admirably to the task. I am privileged to have played with such a skilled group. We hope that you enjoy our production. In the spirit of melodrama, we encourage you, the audience member, to participate as did the spectators in days past. Feel free to cheer for the hero, weep for the damsel and boo the villain. If you are so moved, you may gently toss coins onstage. Lastly, I would like to thank you for your patronage. Your support of community theatre keeps alive the art of bringing an author's words to life on the stage. It also gives people, such as

· myself and the cast, something to do and keeps us off the streets and out of trouble.

~be (!Cast & tlrobuctton ~taft Jimmy Dee Arnold (Director, Comte de Fayence) has been involved with community theatre as an actor/ director for over 25 years. He's been active with A2CT since 1989. His directorial credits include: All The Worlds A Stage, Up The Down Staircase, The Runaways, The Wizard of Oz (Port Huron Civic Theatre), Princes in the Hallway (Washtenaw Council for Children}, Arsenic and Old Lace (Dexter Players), and Extremities (A2CT}. Among his favorites roles portrayed over the years: Charles in Blythe Spirit, the Stage Manager in Our Town, Raul in Extremities, Linus and Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Fagin in Oliver!. Thanks to his lovely wife for her love and support, as well as her poster design. Jimmy would like to dedicate his performance to Jeff Arnold, in honor of Jeff's birthday. Happy birthday, big brother!

Linda Lee Austin (Props Coordinator) made her Civic Theatre debut in a cameo role in The Girls of the Garden Club. She has been in high school and college productions and looks forward to an association with Civic for years, on stage or behind the scenes.

Leo Babcock (Set Designer) studied art and architecture in Paris, Copenhagen and at the U of M. As an architect with the theater bug it seems only natural that he has designed, built and painted sets. He received Best Set awards for A2CT's South Pacific and The Sound of Music. On stage, some favorite roles have been Nathan in Guys and Dolls, Tom Sawyer in Big River and Bill Kelly (Flyboy) in Steel Pier.

Robin Barlow (Lord Grenville, Comte de Tournai) knew the late Beverley Cross, today's playwright, when they were students at Oxford University in the 1950s. In later years, Robin watched from afar with fascination as Beverley became a screenwriting celebrity and won the

heart of Maggie Smith, accomplishing the latter feat more than once.

Christy Beears (Props Manager) is 26 years old and does technical sales and engineering for a small manufacturing firm in Ann Arbor. She moved here from Toledo three years ago and she joined A2CT because she loves the theater and she's always up for meeting new people. In her not -so-spare time she enjoys sculpting, running and anything that involves a good laugh.

Alexandra E. Berneis (Marguerite Blakeney, Assistant Costume Designer) is thrilled to be on stage once again with A2CT. A graduate of Denison University's theater, she was last seen (or not) as a costume designer for A2CT's Chicago. She has also appeared in Pillow Talk, Smile, and Jekyll & Hyde with Civic, as well as numerous productions at Denison. She would like to say break-a-leg to the cast and crew (especially her mother), and to Kevin W., who will most likely never read this, I still know the difference between hospital and no hospital!

Susie Berneis (Jellyband, Costume Designer) can either be found onstage or at a sewing machine--or both! She last costumed The Girls of the Garden Club and Jekyll & Hyde for A2CT and last appeared in Jekyll & Hyde and Pillow Talk. She obviously specializes in biting off (almost) more than she can chew! Many thanks to Paul for being the most understanding husband in the world; to Alix for her costuming skill and willingness; to Torey for being her number one cheerleader; and to anyone who carried, cut, stitched and stood still for costumes for The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Tom Beverly (Lord Anthony Dewhurst) returns for his third A2CT production (and his first without a big black pole on stage), having last appeared in Enter Laughing. His numerous credits include Camelot, Bleacher Bums, The Dining Room, The Rivals, Balm in Gilead, Dracula, Oliver!, The Front Page, and several Shakespearean productions, which are his favorites.

Paul Bianchi (Citizen Captain, ensemble) This is Paul's second show with Ann Arbor Civic Theatre. He was last seen as Merriman in The Importance of Being Earnest. Prior to that you may have seen him as a part of Orpheus Productions in such shows as Harvey, Of Mice and Men, and Lettice and Lovage. For the last nine years, Paul has lived and worked in Ann Arbor.

Glenn Bugala (Executioner #1, Old Man, ensemble) has been active with Ann Arbor Civic Theatre for several years, half as a director, half as an actor, and now as a Board member. Also this year, he played Billy Flynn in A2CT's Chicago, and he directed WCC's Victor/ Victoria. For A2CT, he has directed Tommy, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Front Page and A Little Night Music. His roles at A2CT include Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew, Charles in Blithe Spirit, Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice, Zach in A Chorus Line, and Juan Peron in Evita. This past April, he and his wife Emily welcomed the love of their lives into the world - Sophie Jane Bugala.

THE CHOP HOUSE

Richard Casto (Sir Percy Blakeney) is thrilled to be making his debut with Ann Arbor Civic Theater. Thanks to each of you in the audience for supporting our efforts by attending. Many heartfelt thanks and much gratitude to the technicians, designers, backstage crew, volunteers and others folks behind the scenes that have made this production look and sound ab fab! Lots of hugs and kisses to a talented, generous and bawdy cast, it's been really brill! A big-sloppy-purely-platonic-kiss to Jimmy and Michele for enabling us to be brave explorers. I've worked hard, learned a lot, and had fun: thanks!

Yalonda Dye (Sally) is new to Ann Arbor Civic Theatre. She is a 1999 Kennedy Center Irene Ryan Nominee, for acting excellence, and recipient of North Harris College's (Houston), Rising Star award. Although she has played feature-extra roles in movies such as Tin Cup and Arlington Rd., Yalonda prefers the stage. "I like flying without a net;' she says of her love for theatre.

Jon Elliott (Brogard, ensemble) Recipe for Pimpernel Stew: 1 gallon Vichy water

1 part Rat meat, coarsely chopped (Note:

no live rats were harmed in this production)

1 part Terrific cast and crew (special thanks to Jimmy Dee and Michele)

1 part Love and support from my family (thank you again)

1 part Ham (that would be me ... ) 2 parts Rotten vegetables (hopefully not

supplied by audience) Bring to a boil. Serve with relish.

Tom Foley (Lambert) is very happy to be

returning to A2CT. His only other adventure with them was in a production of Hamlet, along

with director Jimmy Arnold, about seven years ago. He is originally from Plymouth, and has lived in Ann Arbor area for about 15 years. He

attended EMU as a literature major, and plans on pursuing a future in acting. Tom would like to thank his family for all their love and support.

Andrew Hoag (Sir Andrew ffoulkes) is making his more-or-less yearly appearance on Civic's

stage, having played stage manager Don Pike in last November's Enter Laughing. Most recently,

he was seen as Rooster Hannigan in Saline's

Annie, doing something (remotely) akin to dancing. In addition to performing, Andrew

has directed, produced, designed sets, stage managed, and done all manner of grunt work, chiefly with A2CT, Saline Area Players, and

Chelsea Area Players. He has a PhD in history

from U-M and is actually employed (evidence furnished upon request).

Thorn Johnson (Stage Manager, Lighting Designer) TJ has been around A2CT for

many years as an actor and director as well

as stage manager and lighting designer. It has been a while since he last was seen (or

not seen, really) as the stage manager; it was

for City of Angels at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. His most recent lighting designs were for The Importance of Being Ernest, Enter Laughing, and The Girls of the Garden Club. He is a diehard (how much harder

can it get) Detroit Tiger fan and enjoys a quiet evening in front of the tube.

Karl Kasischke (Chevalier Paul de Grignon, Robespierre) Karl's last appearance on stage

was as a foppish Brit in the musical version of The Scarlet Pimpernel in Adrian. Tonight, in his first show with A2CT, he has defected to the

French side. He is thankful to work again with several cast members he's known from other

community productions of Oliver!, Harvey, and

1776. He hopes some day to be a cheese ball.

Brittany Kelley (Princess Blanche de Vaugard,

ensemble) is 18 years old and a member of the Thespian Troupe 5147. This is the first play she's been in since she came to Michigan.

Kent Klausner (HRH Prince of Wales, ensemble) attends Eastern Michigan University where he is working towards a degree in secondary education, and he is performing in his fifth show with A2CT. Previous credits

with A2CT include Dillson in The Girls of the Garden Club and Tony Walters in Pillow Talk. He would like to thank the cast and crew for

this wonderful experience, his family and friends for all their support, and his girlfriend Melissa for all her love and patience through the busy times.

Michele Leshan (Assistant Director) Michele's theater avocation began in North Carolina at Raleigh Little Theater, where her activities included light board operator, follow spot operator, props and costume running crews, and creating and running scenery. Cold weather in Wisconsin didn't stop her. She assistant directed and stage managed The Children's Hour for Madison Area Technical College Players. This is Michele's lO'h A2CT show, and her 14th

production since she's been in Ann Arbor, also working with Comic Opera Guild, MorrisCo Art Theatre, Redbud Productions,

and UMGASS. Brief onstage stints included A2CT's The Merchant of Venice, The Heidi Chronicles, and UMGASS's The Sorcerer, after which she "disappeared" behind the scenes once again to assistant direct and stage manage A2CT's The Front Page and A Midsummer Night's Dream. She also produced last season's The Girls of the Garden Club.

Heidi Ligget (Props Coordinator) This is Heidi's first theater production since her high school senior class production,

Androcles and the Lion (Clinton Sr. High School, Clinton TN, 1981), when she was an extra and helped with props. She was born

in A2, but moved around and finally moved back in 1995. She's an electronic technician,

and her hobbies include live action role

playing and medieval recreation with the Society for Creative Anachronism.

Tiffany Denise Mitchenor (Guillotine Sergeant, ensemble) is thrilled to be performing for the first time with A2CT! She was last seen at Michigan State University as Ruth in A Raisin in the Sun. Other recent performances include: The Vagina Monologues, MacBeth, and various one act festivals. She would like to thank her parents and friends for their continuous support.

Teresa K. Myers (Producer) As the proud mother of two young actors/ dancers, Teresa has spent many hours in the audience. This is her first time working extensively behind the scenes as a producer. Teresa would like to thank Jimmy, Michele, Cassie, Suzi and Joyce for all their tremendous advice and guidance.

Linda Parolini (Henriette de Bavay, Phyllis, ensemble) In real life, Linda's the Health Service Manager for Concentra Medical Center, but she likes to play. Previous roles include Jennifer/ Meg in Shoeman, Louka in Arms and the Man, Sarah in Table Manners, Joanne in Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Marks in Talking With, and Annie in Taken in Marriage.

David Putman (Armand St. Just) is a native to "Ace deuce;' and has been seen in several quality stage performances in the area, including Bernardo in West Side Story. His plans for the future include finishing his education at U-M, moving to Hollywood, and eventually, world domination.

Larry Rusinsky (Sound Designer, ensemble)

designed the sound for A2CT's The Girls of the Garden Club and for the MorrisCo Art Theatre productions of The Odd Couple, The Real Inspector Hound, and A Month in the Country. He has also appeared frequently on stage.

Petrina Stamatopoulos (Messenger, ensemble) is a sophomore at Saline High. This is her first show with A2CT. She has previously been in 12 Angry Jurors. She played the 11th Juror, and she has been acting most of her life. She has enjoyed this experience very much and wants to thank her family and friends, especially her mother, for always believing in her!

Bill Teppo (Executioner #2, ensemble) After he appeared on stage in A2CT's The Pajama Game, we are pleased to know we have not lost track of Bill. He is the uncle of two nephews and one niece. When he is not appearing on stage, he is swimming laps for A2qua or fighting for gay and lesbian rights. He is convinced he is a Harry Potter addict. Maybe someday he will join Harry Potter Anonymous.

Karen Underwood (Signorina Bosca, ensemble) is happy to be back at Civic after a three-year absence. Recent roles include Grace Farrell in Annie, Carmen the gypsy in Cookin' With Gus, and the cabdriver in Harvey for Saline Area Players; and Snoopy in You're A Good Man,

Charlie Brown for The Stage Presence. This one goes out to Mom, Dad and wonderful husband Tom. Love ya honey--Vive La Republique!

Tom Underwood (Chauvelin) A rogues' gallery of one, Tom has spent the last several years in Belleville, Michigan as part of the witless protection program. Happily, he has returned to the Ann Arbor area where he hopes to revisit the scenes of numerous artistic crimes. He has appeared recently as FDR in the Saline Area Players production of Annie and is grateful to be sharing the stage with his lovely wife Karen and with many of his old friends. Vive le Theatre!

Catherine Zudak (Suzanne de Tournai, ensemble) is delighted to appear on stage again after many years' absence. She has worked behind the scenes at A2CT, most recently as assistant director for The Girls of the Garden Club. Thanks to husband Rob, "You're my hero:' and family and friends kind enough to see this production.
