The New Mexico Tech SAE® Mini Baja Team is comprised of students who wish to apply their education and gain hands on experience by participating in this challenging engineering project. The team is made up of 4 subgroups: Frame, Drivetrain, Suspension, and Driver Controls. The groups work interdependently to design, fabricate, and test our single seat off-road vehicle. Since the Mini Baja project is part of NMT’s Design Clinic class, team members also write reports, give status updates, and present their work throughout the year. The NMT SAE® Mini Baja project provides an extremely valuable, real world experience to its participants before they graduate.

FrameGroup Members: Jared Davis, Collin Manchester, Berny Miyamoto

This group is responsible for designing and fabricating the frame of the vehicle so it can withstand front, side, rear and rollover impact conditions (these are experimentally measured). The frame group models the frame of the vehicle using SolidWorks, and performs Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in Ansys using batch code.

SuspensionGroup Members: Andre Littot, Josh Hodges

Members of the suspension group are responsible for designing and fabricating the front and rear suspension systems so the vehicle can perform at its best on various types of terrain. The suspension group models and analyzes the suspension components using SolidWorks.

Driver ControlsGroup Members: Kelsey Zimmerman, Jean Paul Chauvel, Ben Pederson

The driver controls group is responsible for designing and fabricating the vehicle control components: the shifter, brake and accelerator pedals, and steering assembly. These components are modeled and analyzed using SolidWorks.

DrivetrainGroup Members: Michael Baca, Kevin Vedera

Members of the drivetrain group are responsible designing the gearing components of the vehicle. The drivetrain group models and analyzes the drivetrain and cases with SolidWorks before fabrication.

2015-2016 VehicleThe goals when designing the vehicle were to reduce weight and increase performance. To this end, the team looked for ways to remove excess material from the earlier design and determined ways to use composite materials. The main components of the vehicle are a 4130 Chromoly frame, aluminum gearbox case, rear portal hubs, brake and accelerator pedal assembly, locking shifter, twin I-beam front suspension, dual arm rear suspension, and a new breaking system. Many of the components were designed to address fl aws on previous vehicles.

Fabrication ProcessThe frame and suspension components are constructed at NMT using a tube bender and a TIG welder. The majority of the required machining work is performed by the EMRTC or R&ED machine shops on campus at NMT. Various components may also be distributed to outside machine shops or machined by team members. The team members use a lathe and a vertical mill when they need to machine parts.

SAE® Mini Baja competitions are divided into two categories: dynamic events and static events.

The dynamic events test the durability of each vehicle’s components. This includes a brake test, hill climb, acceleration, maneuverability, suspension, and endurance race events. The best score out of two attempts is taken for all of these events except for the endurance race. The endurance race is a four hour event that takes place on the fi nal day of competition. Teams race on a single track and try to complete as many laps as possible in the allotted time.

In the static events, teams try to convince a panel of judges (who represent mock companies) that their vehicle is worthy of production on the basis of cost and design. The purpose of the static events are to push vehicle design and cost effectiveness forward.

Competition Description

The NMT SAE® Mini Baja Team will attend the competition in Gorman, California on May 19-22.

*The NMT Baja team decides on what constitutes as a small, medium, and large logo each year depending on available space.

Platinum($5000+)

Large Company/individual logo or name will be placed on the fi rewall of the vehicle located behind the seat. The company/individual sponsoring the team will receive a signed and framed photo of the team with the completed vehicle near the end of the academic year. In addition, the company name/logo will be printed on the team’s competition shirts.

Gold($1000-$4999)

Company/individual has the choice of a medium logo or name placed on the fi rewall of the vehicle behind the seat, or a large logo or name placed on one of the side panels of the vehicle. The company/individual sponsoring the team will receive a signed and framed photo of the team with the completed vehicle near the end of the academic year.

Silver($500-$999)

Medium Company/individual logo or name will be placed on one of the side panels of the vehicle. The company/individual sponsoring the team will receive a signed and framed photo of the team with the completed vehicle near the end of the academic year.

Bronze($0-$499)

Small Company/individual logo or name will be placed on one of the side panels of the vehicle. The company/individual sponsoring the team will receive a photo of the team with the completed vehicle near the end of the academic year.
