LIFE IN THE YEAR 2025 :
4
Know your material. Pick a topic you are interested in. Know more about it than you
include in your speech.
Use personal stories and conversational language – that way you won’t easily forget
what to say.
Practice. Practice. Practice! Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using.
Revise as necessary.
Know the audience. Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. It’s easier to
speak to a group of
friends than to strangers.
Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the mi-
crophone and any visual aids.
Relax. Ease tension by doing exercises. Transform nervous energy into enthusiasm.
Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud,
clear and confident. Visualize
the audience clapping – it will boost your confidence.
Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimu-
lating, informative and
entertaining. They don’t want you to fail.
Don’t apologize for any nervousness or problem – the audience probably never no-
ticed it.
Concentrate on the message – not the medium. Focus your attention away from your
own anxieties and
concentrate on your message and your audience.
Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking.
A Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need in a safe and friendly envi-
ronment.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SPEAKING
5
While you cannot predict the future, you can certainly be better prepared for it!!
If we consider our life as a complete journey, we find three stages that are to come in our way, for which we
required money, and we should plan for the same, and on that particular station we can’t compromise on even
on one, for example, one can’t compromise with his children’s higher education. As every one of us aware
that, when the child attains the age of 17, we require money for his/her higher education, whether we have
planned or not. So, by planning well ahead for that need, god forbids nothing happens, if in between anything
happens to us, the child’s future and career will not go as an unfulfilled dream...Prevention is better than cure!
Similarly, every parent wants their children marriage to happen with great pump and show, but maybe in fu-
ture, we don’t need any money for their marriages, as the younger generation doesn’t pain their parents for
searching their better half, they select themselves, though it is a bitter half, and introduce their spouse along
with your grand child!!
Thirdly, the retirement stage, Guys don’t worry I am not talking about our old age; I am talking about our happy
and second honeymoon period! Now days, trend has changed, the people want to retire at young age, if I talk
about the time of our fore fathers, the lifestyle was like, they started working at the age of 20 and retired at the
age of 60, that is 40 years of hard work! And the life expectancy was about 75years, so, the retirement period is
just 15 years! But, now the trend has changed and people want to retire at young age when they can enjoy
greener part of life.. In this generation, people start working at the age of 25 and want to retire as early as at
the age of 45 or by maximum 50; so, they wanted to hardly work (!) for just 20 to 25years! And today, thanks to
medical advancement, our life expectancy has increased from 75year to 81years and it means we are bound to
enjoy (!) nearly 30 years of retirement life after our 25 years service life.
30 years! Guys can you imagine during that period we will not do anything except enjoying.. (of course, we will
be given due recognition by our family as Senior citizen, and may have more value added responsibilities like,
EB bills payment, House tax payment, Ration purchase, taking care of the house when our grown up children
are out for a happy vacation, baby sitting your children’s children, etc.,!!
But, it should be understood that, as how living short is sad and bad, living long is also very sad and very bad if
we have not planned our retirement.
As it is known truth that, at the time when our eyes and ears don’t listen to us (at old age), we are with no fixed
salary, and no one is liable or bound to pay us any fixed some, unless we have planned prudently for your re-
tirement!
In my day to day life, I meet lot of people and they blindly trust that the investment in equity or mutual fund or
properties that are made by them are sufficient for their retirement life, but, my dear friends, these are all not
guaranteed or secured, may be at the time of retirement, you may have lot of liquid cash or rental income
from your properties and that may keep you from any economic bombardments, reason being you are a very
good finance manger, but can you presume the same could be the scene when the same is managed by your
spouse, in your absence?? So, on any such above discussed 3 types of contingencies, the planning must have to
be done on considering, god forbids nothing happens, if anything happens to us, there should be some guaran-
teed backup.
Guys nobody can cover emotional loss but, monetary loss we can cover, and that is in our hand. While you can-
not predict the future, you can certainly be better prepared for it.

Pencil: I'm sorry....
Eraser: For what? You didn't do anything wrong.
Pencil: I'm sorry cos you get hurt bcos of me. Whenever I made a mistake, you're always
there to erase it. But as you make my mistakes vanish, you lose a part of yourself. You get
smaller and smaller each time.
Eraser: That's true. But I don't really mind. You see, I was made to do this. I was made to
help you whenever you do something wrong. Even though one day, I know I'll be gone and
you'll replace me with a new one, I'm actually happy with my job. So please, stop worry-
ing. I hate seeing you sad. :)
I found this conversation between the pencil and the eraser very inspirational. Parents are
like the eraser whereas their children are the pencil. They're always there for their chil-
dren, cleaning up their mistakes. Sometimes along the way... they get hurt, and become
smaller (older, and eventually pass on). Though their children will eventually find someone
new (spouse), but parents are still happy with what they do for their children, and will al-
ways hate seeing their precious ones worrying, or sad.
This is for all parents (and would-be parents) out there.....

:
Ever since my house was built, I always longed for some fancy outdoor lights on my compound wall and on the pathways. But my father used to advise me, “See my son, there are a lot of people in our
state who have not got any electricity connection yet. Also the government implements load shed-ding and power cuts due to the insufficient power production. So I don’t think it is a nice idea to spend electricity more than what we need in our daily life”.
I felt that my father was right. So I gave up my idea of beautifying my yard with lights.
In February 2009 we lost my father unexpectedly. My mother and younger brother’s family had to stay at home. So the requirement of outdoor lighting became a necessity rather than a luxury due to
security reasons.
After my father passed away, I used to travel home frequently to visit my mother. I leave my wife and two children in Abu Dhabi for these short trips due to their schooling. So I get ample time at home to do anything.
During my trip in February 2010, I decided to do something interesting and useful. Before my trip I did some homework to install a solar power panel and a compound wall light using this power. As it was an experiment, I did not want to install a high power system. So ordered a 12V 5W solar power
panel and a few LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) from www.ebay.in. Those items were promptly deliv-ered before I reached home.
12V 5W Solar Panel A pack of 100 LEDs 16 LEDs soldered and mounted on a lamp holder
The LEDs are the light of the future. It does not require much power compared to the traditional CFL / Incandescent / Halogen lamps. You can see most modern flash lights and emergency are equipped with LEDs. Other advantages are that they do not produce much heat, and their lifespan is
longer compared to the above lamps.

I have always loved electronics. When I was a student, I liked to assemble simple hobby circuits for my friends. So working on this project was very easy for me.
DO IT YOURSELF, DO IT NOW!

The overall schematic

2. Input Charge Regulator
3. Battery
4. Light Sensing Circuit
5. LED Lamp
The scheme works like this: When there is sunlight, the solar panel produces power. This power is used to charge a lead acid battery. At night, the battery will give power to some LEDs which produces the light.
12V 7.2 AH lead acid battery
I had to insert a charge regulator (item #2 in the schematic) to control the input voltage to a con-stant value as well as to protect the battery from overcharging. I also introduced an LDR (Light De-pended Resistor) circuit in between the battery and light (item #4). When the light falls on an LDR it
will either activate or deactivate a circuit, depending on the design of the circuit. So this circuit can switch on or switch off the lights connected to it. The LDR was positioned in such a way that when there is daylight, it will switch off my outdoor light and vice versa. The lamp will be automatically turned on when it is dark and will be turned off in the morning. Cool, right?

My project was successfully completed. It was a pilot project. I am glad that for below 90 US$ I could setup a prototype renewable energy system. In the future, I will expand this scheme, installing a more powerful solar panel and a high capacity battery bank. Then I can connect more lamps to this
system and reduce the energy I consume from the grid.
Dear Toastmasters, please look around. Is there anything that we could contribute to
keep the planet earth green? It can be an idea of recycling anything, planting a tree, saving water or using alternative energy sources. Think about our future generation. Think about something that you could do, and do it today and do it yourself!
