TRANSCRIPT
Since then, the NMIC Steering Committee has been working with Cathy Kinney, a Systems Analysis expert and contractor, to begin the process of teasing apart the immunization process and gathering data on what we know is happening now and what we know works to improve immunization rates. The December 7th meeting offered an opportunity to engage the larger NMIC membership and tap their collective knowledge and expertise.
For the first part of the meeting, Anna Pentler gave a short presentation reviewing the NMIC’s activities and accomplishments. During the rest of the meeting, Cathy Kinney led the members through some small group
work to look at the current core processes of the immunization system, and examine the data to see where improvements could be made.
The good work that was accomplished at
the December meeting will continue through the monthly Steering Committee meetings.
Thanks to all who participated, and stay tuned for more developments in our Immunization Systems analysis.

Draft: Core Immunization Process
On December 7 the NMIC celebrated its 5th anniversary. Over 50 members participated in the meeting, which celebrated NMIC’s first five years
and started in-depth planning for the next five years.
Since the NMIC was founded five years ago, there have been many meetings, educational sessions, shot events, press conferences, newsletters and new immunizations. We have been working in many venues to improve New Mexico’s immunization coverage rate. It’s time to reassess our activities and progress.
In September, Margy Wienbar, co-chair for the NMIC, suggested a comprehensive systems analysis for NMIC.

HIB Vaccine Recall
On December 13, Merck & Co. announced a voluntary recall of 10 lots of PedvaxHIB vaccine and 2 lots of COMVAX combination vaccine (see
below for lot numbers). The vaccine lots were recalled as a precautionary measure due to possible contamination. The affected doses were distributed starting in April 2007.
During standard evaluation of its manufacturing processes, Merck identified the presence of Bacillus cereus bacteria. No contamination has been found in sterility testing of the vaccine lots, but as it is possible that some contamination could have occurred, Merck is issuing this recall.
Children who received Hib vaccine from these lots do not need to be revaccinated. The potency of the vaccine is unaffected. If there were any contamination, it would not result in loss of potency, but may be a risk for skin irritation at the site of injection. To date, no skin infections have been reported to VAERS.
Providers with doses of PedvaxHIB or COMVAX from these lots should discontinue use and follow Merck’s instructions for returning the recalled vaccine. If you have VFC or non-VFC PedvaxHib or Comvax that has been recalled, please call Stericycle at 1-800-668-4391 and ask them to send you shipping labels and authorization forms to return your PedvaxHib and/or Comvax to them. Do not return vaccine to the Santa Fe DOH pharmacy.

SHOT BRIEFS
Got Shots?Protect Tots!
Focus on influenza
Our first Got Shots week took place November 12-17. Forty-eight
providers took part statewide in 28 cities. Over five hundred children received almost 900 shots during the week. While some providers did not see many children, others
reported great success in immunizing kids especially against influenza. KRQE and KASA had advertisements for the Got Shots week, and had information on their websites linking to the NMIC website. Providers were given posters to help advertise the event and were given incentives to hand out to children getting immunizations.
The next “Got Shots? Protect Tots!” week will take place from February 11-16. Providers are encouraged to participate. Children younger than nine getting immunized against
influenza need two doses in the same season. This Got Shots week will provide a reminder to parents to bring children in for the second dose.
Providers, please send in your registration form to participate in the second statewide quarterly Got Shots event. The February event will include influenza and all other childhood vaccinations. Your clinic is encouraged to pick the dates and times you would like to participate.
