7. I love me most.
Narcissism is part of being an adolescent. Adoles-cence is a time of development when kids should be wrapped up in their own worlds, trying on different ideas and values. It is a time for them to see what fits. They are not ready to accept their parent’s values without some exploration of their own. What they need from parents is a safety net, not total body armor. Think of yourself as a lane in the bowling alley. It is time to remove the bumper guards, but try to keep the ball in your lane. They need boundaries and mature encouragement. This is not a time for children to fulfill their parent’s fantasies or unachieved goals.
11. This too shall pass.
Enjoy your middle school child. They are passionate about causes, other people, world issues and themselves. This is a phase of life everyone must endure. God is not finished with them yet. This is just a step toward maturity. Each child will eventually reach their desired state of maturity, some quicker than others. Be patient.
8. Free at last, I’m free at last.
Freedom to explore does not include unlimited freedom. Children need responsibilities that impact the whole family. Without this type of responsibility, children think their parents do not believe in them as people. They translate their lack of responsibilities as a parent’s lack of trust in their abilities. They also need to fail and see how failure causes others to suffer. And oh how they will fail. Expect it. Embrace it. Use it. Failure is a great teaching tool. Unfortunately, it may be the best teacher ever.
10. REALLY????????
If you won’t believe all the stories the student tells about the teacher, then the teacher won’t believe all the stories told about the parents. Comments, expressions, and actions are not always relayed in contect to the actual events. Middle school brains are very protective of the body they inhabit. They protect themselves at all cost. It is a primitive instinct. Stay in touch with the teacher. Do not assume you understand all the pieces of each story your child tells.
6. I could run a small corporation, but I am not sure where my jacket is.
“Someone stole it.” This is the most famous quote from a middle school child. This is said about any lost item and sometimes used when referring to imaginary items. Sometimes this is also used when they don’t do their homework/get the permis-sion slip signed/bring the money for the field trip, and when asked to produce this document they are shocked that they can’t find it.
9. Awesome! Bummer! I hate you! Do you like me?
A student will classify each day as either the “wost day of my life” or as “the best day ever.” This classification can be made based on highly important issues such as the lunch menu, who spoke to them in the hall, or whether their locker will open between classes. Don’t overreact with each emotion. By the time a parent has wrapped their mind around the lastest “teen crisis” it will have become old news.
If you noticed the 10 things turned into 11. I teach middle school math so 10 can also mean 11, it may also mean 8 or 9. Don’t judge me. Middle school people have a hard time understanding boundaries.
