On 11.04.2011, NLC crossed a major milestone as it was conferred with the
Navratna Status, the second highest status of grade 'A' Central Public Sector Units. At a
grand function held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, Smt.Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Her
Excellency, the President of India presented the coveted certificate to NLC and Shri A.R.
Ansari, CMD, NLC received the same.
With an enhanced autonomy, NLC has geared up to become a National Player and
will emerge as a Maharatna Company, in near future.

Enterprise Award-2010 on 11.02.2011. This prestigious
award is instituted by the Forum of Women in Public
Sector (WIPS), a professional body functioning under the

(SCOPE). This is the fourth time that NLC is winning this
Award as it has won the same award for the years 2001,
2003 and 2007.

07.07.2011 and 08.07.2011. He visited
Mine-II, Mine-I Afforestation, Thermal Power
Station-I Expansion, CARD, NLC GH and
Sneha Opportunity School. The Hon'ble
Minister held a meeting with the representatives of Trade Unions and Associations. He
expressed his satisfaction on the performance of NLC and praised the environment
prevailing around Neyveli.

02.06.2011 to review the performance of NLC

Committee on Government Assurances:
The Members of the Parliamentary
Committee on Government Assurances, Rajya
Sabha under the chairmanship of Shri
Pyarimohan Mohapatra visited Chennai on
10.02.2011. They discussed with NLC CMD
Shri A.R. Ansari and NLC Directors and were
satisfied with NLC's performance.
Patriotic fervour reverberated at Bharathi Stadium when Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD,
ndNLC unfurled the Tricolour on the Nation's 62 Republic Day. Earlier, he garlanded the
statue of Mahatma Gandhi.He also took the guard of honour on the ceremonial parade.
Directors, Chief Vigilance Officer, Senior officials, executives, supervisors, employees,
workers representatives of Unions and Associations and the residents of Neyveli were
present at Bharathi Stadium to witness the celebrations whereby 4100 school children
presented colourful cultural programme.

The Neyveli Chapter of Forum of
Women in Public Sector (WIPS)
celebrated International Women's Day at
NLC on 08.03.2011 in a grand manner. Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD/NLC, was the Chief Guest of the function. Dr. P. Chandra,
Director (Retired), Department of Pediatrics, Stanley Medical College, Chennai. Smt. Kannegi Packianathan, I.A.S,
Special Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Dairy & Fishery, Government of Tamil Nadu and Smt. Jayanthi ALS Kannappan,
Executive Committee Member of the famous NGO-REEDA (Rural Education & Economical Development Agency) were
the guests of honour. NLC Directors extended their felicitations. Smt.K.S. Ansari released the souvenir 'Reflections 2011',
to mark the celebrations and distributed the prizes to the winners.
International Women's Day Celebrations
NLC seed was sown on 20.05.1957, whereby the then Prime Minister
of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, inaugurated the mining operations of NLC.
NLC celebrates this day as Raising day, not only for the purpose of its birth but
also to rejoice the growth it has underwent to reap a 'Navratna' today. The
celebration was conducted at the lawns of the Corporate Office on 20.05.2011
and Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD, NLC, the chief guest of the function, hoisted the
Public Sector Flag. Functional Directors of NLC and employees participated
in the function.
NLC Raising Day Celebrations
This year's World Environment Day was celebrated at
various units of NLC on 04.06.2011and 05-06-2011 with the
theme, “Forests Nature at your service”. Shri K.S. Reddy, Chief
Conservator of Forests/ Ministry of Environment and Forests
(MOEF), Bengaluru Zone was the Chief Guest. Dr. U. Sridharan,
Director (MOEF), Bengaluru zone, NLC Executive Director, and
Senior Officials of NLC spoke on the occasion. Tree saplings
were planted to mark the occasion. Environment Pledge was
also administered during the function.
World Environment Day Celebrations
In addition to the publication of the Operation Manuals, the
Thermal Power Station-II has now made the maintenance manual,
which contains 3 volumes viz. Boiler & Auxiliaries, Turbine & Auxiliaries
and Electrical Systems. The manuals were released by NLC CMD
Shri A.R. Ansari, in hard and soft copy formats on 03.11.2011 at a
function held at TPS-II.
The first copies of the electronic format of the manuals were
received by Shri J. Mahilselvan, Director(Power). The first copies of the
printed format of the three volumes were received by Shri
M. Kamalanayanan, CGM/TPS-II, Shri P. Pannerselvam,
GM/Mtce./TPS-II and Shri T.J. Muralidharan, GM/Oprn./TPS-II
respectively.
Maintenance Manual Released
Rendering a yeoman social responsibility service in
favour of the differently abled children for the past 25 years,
Sneha Opportunity Services under the eminent leadership of
Smt. K.S. Ansari celebrated its Silver Jubilee function on
28.07.2011. In commemoration of the Silver Jubilee celebrations
a three day workshop to handle the special children was
organized at Employee Development Centre. Smt. K.S. Ansari,
President of Sneha School inaugurated the workshop, Shri
A.R. Ansari, CMD, NLC, Directors, Shri B. Surender Mohan, Shri
J. Mahilselvan and Shri S.K. Acharya, participated in the function.
Earlier, CMD inaugurated the renovated Sneha Opportunity
School and Smt. K.S. Ansari inaugurated 'Sneha Poushtika' at
Main Bazaar.

National Integration Week
A week long National Integration celebrations
commenced on 19.11.2011 in commemoration with the birth
anniversary of former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi was
conducted at NLC. Each day was observed with a different
theme. Dr. A. Muthamma, IAS, Sub-Collector/Puducherry
participated as the Chief Guest on the Women's Day
celebrations.Director Shri.B. Surender Mohan, Director (Mines)
administered the oath on National Integration to the NLC
employees at Corporate Office.

garlanded the busts of Indira Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi., On
25.11.2011, Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD, NLC spoke on the valedictory

th The 65 Independence Day was celebrated with the garlanding of Mahatma Gandhi Bust, hoisting of
National flag at Bharati Stadium and inspection of the ceremonial parade by Shri .A.R. Ansari, CMD, NLC. NLC
Directors and CVO participated in the function and distributed awards and certificates.

Mahatma Gandhiji's 142 birth anniversary was
celebrated at NLC on 02-10-2011. Shri.A.R.Ansari, CMD, NLC
paid tribute by garlanding Mahatma Gandhi's statue. At the
function held in the Lignite Hall, excerpts from Holy Books were
read by representatives of different associations. NLC Directors
participated in the function. Uniforms and note books, were
sponsored by Neyveli Ladies Club and were distributed to the
needy school children by our CMD and Smt.K.S.Ansari, president
of the Ladies Club. Community worship at various temples of
Neyveli and cultural programmes by Neyveli school children at
Lignite Hall in the evening were also held.
Ghandhi Jayanthi Celebrations
Hindi Fortnight Celebrations: NLC celebrated Hindi
Fortnight Celebrations from 14.09.2011 as a two weeks event
called Hindi Pakwada (fortnight). Shri. B. Surender Mohan,
Director (Mines) was the chief guest of the inaugural function
conducted at NLC Employee Development centre. The
valedictory function was held on 28.09.2011. Shri.B.Surendar
Mohan the chief guest and NLC Directors Shri.K.Sekar,
Shri.J.Mahilselvan, and Shri.S.K.Acharya spoke on the
importance of Hindi.
OLIC Meetings: NLC is organizing Official Language
Implementation meeting every quarter to review the action taken
by different units on Official Language Implementation.
Hindi Workshops: NLC's Hindi Cell is organising Hindi
Workshop every quarter for its officers and employees to update
their knowledge in the official language.
NLC's efforts on Official Language Implementation
The Tamilnadu & Kerala Mines Safety Association (TN & KMSA) celebrated the Zonal level safety celebrations
of the Neyveli Zone, between 16.08.2011 and 21.08.2011, at Neyveli. Each day celebration was hosted by
different units of NLC. Eminent personalities of Safety Enforcement Departments from Central and State
Government were the Chief Guests during the week long celebrations. The Final day Celebrations of Neyveli Zone
was organized at Lignite Hall on 21.08.2011. Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD NLC was the President of the function and Shri
D. Sengupta, Dy. Director General of Mines Safety/Southern Zone, Bengaluru was the chief guest. Shri B.
Surender Mohan, Director(Mines), NLC and also the President of TN & KMSA Shri R. Kandasamy, Director(P&P).
Executive Directors, Senior Officials of NLC & Directorate General of Mines Safety and employees with their family
members participated in the function. Zero accident. Units were appreciated with Special Awards. A grand Safety
Exhibition was organized in the Book Fair Grounds.
Safety Week Celebrations at NLC
st th st NLC Book Festival was organized from 1 July to 10 July 2011. On1 July Hon'ble Mr. Justice
T. Mathivanan, Judge Madras High Court, inaugurated the fair in the presence of Shri A.R. Ansari, NLC
CMD. Eminent writers and leading publishers were honoured everyday. New books were released in all the
ten days. Eminent personalities from different walks of life participated as guests of the fair. The curtain of
the book fair were drawn gloriously on 10.07.2011 which was graced by Shri B. Surender Mohan, Director
(Mines) and the chief guest Prof. Dr. M. Ramanathan, Vice Chancellor, Annamalai University. More than 3
lakhs visitors along with their children attended the fair with enthusiasm to inculcate the goodness of books
to the future generation.

NLC abides by the
Integrity Pact Programme in all
its procurement activities for a
transparent, fair and equity
business dealing with its
suppliers and contractors.
Meetings were held in two thsessions during 9 June, 2011
th thand 7 & 8 October, 2011 at
Neyveli to review and evaluate the effectiveness of Integrity Pact Programme. The Independent External Monitors
for NLC, Shri Pradeep Kumar Banerji, IAS, former Secretary to Govt. of India and Shri D. Mukherjee, I.P.S, former
Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu and Shri R. Poornalingam, I.A.S., Former Secretary to Government of India
interacted with the senior executives of NLC and reviewed the Integrity Pact Programme. They conducted a
separate meeting exclusively for the bidders and vendors. NLC CMD Shri A.R. Ansari, and NLC Directors took part
in the discussion. The Independent External monitors expressed complete satisfaction in the implementation of
Integrity Pact Program by NLC.
The Tamilnadu Chapter of Vigilance Study Circle (VSC) was
inaugurated on 23.03.2011, at a function held at the Image Conference
Hall, Indian Bank, Chennai. Shri R. Sri Kumar, IPS, Vigilance
Commissioner, Central Vigilance Commission, New Delhi was the
Chief Guest of the function. NLC CMD Shri. A.R.Ansari delivered the
key note address. Shri. K.S. Balasubramanian CVO/NLC, also the
President of VSC, Tamil Nadu Chapter, CEOs of various Banks &
Public Sectors participated in the function.
VSC is a professional body functioning with its head quarters
at Hyderabad, aiming to bring all vigilance functionaries in the country
together. VSC was established by the Association for Advancement of
Police and Security Sciences (AAPSS), Hyderabad. Padmasri Dr. S.
Subramanian, IPS (Rtd.), Chairman, AAPSS and a nationally well
known expert on Vigilance is the founder Chairman of VSC.

The Regional Coal Consumer Council constituted by the Ministry of Coal, Govt. of India which
looks into the grievances of the consumers on supply of lignite to the genuine buyers and to ensure
transparent transactions held a meeting at Neyveli on 27.07.2011
The Regional Coal Consumer Council with NLC CMD, Shri.AR.Ansari as its head, Shri B.
Surender Mohan NLC Director (Mines) as coordinator, the Functional Directors as members in
association with Public Interest Nominees of Ministry of Coal, Govt. of India interacted and discussed the
possibilities of improvement in lignite supply. The Coal Consumer Representatives of various industries

The Architect of the Indian Constitution, Bharatratna stDr. B.R. Ambedkar's 121 Birth Anniversary was celebrated with
due respect on 14.04.2011 in Neyveli. The birth anniversary
celebrations of India's first law minister began with garlanding of
Dr. Ambedkar's statue at Pudukuppam junction by Shri B. Surender
Mohan, Director (Mines). All NLC Directors participated in the
function and spoke. The function was well attended by the
Association's members, NLC officials, employees and the public.

Neyveli Ladies Club Widens its Social Service path
Headed by the able leadership of Smt. K.S. Ansari, the Neyveli
Ladies Club organized the following social services:
Ø During the Republic Day Celebrations and
Independence Day celebrations fruits were distributed to the in-
patients of NLC General Hospital.
Ø On 02.02.2011 the club members visited Panchayat
Union Elementary Schools of Terkkumelur,
Seplanatham, Kuravankuppam, Kottogam villages and
presented uniforms and sweets to the students.
Ø On 25.02.2011 the club members along with Smt.
Yogamaya Acharya visited the Panchayat Union
Elementary Schools of Uyyakondaravi and Vadaku
melur villages and distributed uniforms and sweets.
Ø On 18.08.2011 the Smt. K.S. Ansari inaugurated a free
eye camp at Tholkappiyanar Govt. aided middle school,
Block-16, Neyveli and nearly 45 students were provided
spectacles and treatment.
Ø During Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations Ladies Club
sponsored kits containing uniforms, notebooks,
geometry box, Tiffin boxes etc. to nearly 26 needy school
children.
Ø On 24.10.2011 Smt. K.S. Ansari distributed Diwali
sweets to the Kuravankuppam village Panchayat Union
School students. Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD NLC joined the
celebrations at Sneha Amruth cafeteria.
thThe 55 Annual General Meeting of NLC was held at
Naradha Gana Sabha, Chennai on 12.09.2011. Shri A.R. Ansari,
NLC CMD chaired the meeting and this meeting had great news
for shareholders as NLC Board of Directors declared a dividend
of 23% (r2.30 per share) on the paid up equity share capital for
the year 2010-11. This is the highest rate of dividend since the
company started to pay dividend. NLC Functional Directors, Shri
B. Surender Mohan, Shri R. Kandasamy, Shri K. Sekar, Shri J.
Mahilselvan and Shri S.K. Acharya, Part-Time Non-Official
Directors, Dr. Sanjay Govind Dhande, Shri L.N. Vijayaraghavan,
Shri M.B.N. Rao, Shri M.M. Sharma, Shri V. Murali, Shri
R.K. Mishra and the Company Secretar Shri K. Viswanath
participated in the meeting. Shri I.P.Nagpal, Under Secretary,
Ministry of Coal, Government of India was present in the
meeting as Govt. of India representative. A large number of
share holders participated in the meeting.
th55 Annual General Meeting
At Neyveli: A Press Meet was organized at Neyveli House,
Neyveli on 17.05.2011, especially to disclose the Navratna Status attained by
NLC. Speaking to the reporters, Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD, NLC informed the
production performance of NLC and various records created by it during
2010-2011. NLC Directors participated in the press meet and replied the
reporters.
At Chennai: Shri A.R. Ansari, NLC CMD addressed the media
persons on 27.05.2011, at a press meet held at Hotel Taj Connemara,
Chennai. This event was arranged just after the Board Meeting in which our
annual net profit was declared. NLC CMD declared the all time high
performance of NLC both in physical & financial front and updated the on
going future projects and plans. NLC Directors participated in the meet and
answered the queries of media persons.
With the Hon'ble Minister: Shri Pratik Prakash Bapu Patil, Hon'ble Union Minister of
State met the Media representatives on 08.07.2011 in a press conference held at Neyveli House,
Neyveli. The Union Minister addressed nearly 100 journalists from leading print and electronic
media and expressed his satisfaction on the performance of NLC.

Storm Water Control (SWC) Yard:
Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD/NLC, inaugurated the shifted
Storm Water Control (SWC) Yard at Mine-I which plays a
vital role in evacuating the rainwater precipitation collected
inside the Mine areas on 08.09.2011.in the presence of
NLC Directors, Executive Director/Mines, Senior officials
and Employees.
Overhauled Bucket Wheel Excavator-1027:
The overhauled 700 litres Bucket Wheel Excavator-
1027 (BWE) was inaugurated on 15.09.2011 by Shri
B. Surender Mohan, Director (Mines). The overhauling
work was carried out by Specialized Mining Equipment
(SME) maintenance crew of Mine-IA.
On the same day, he inaugurated a ramp and
drinking water scheme. The ramp serves as the approach
road to the Eastern Corridor Bench of Mine-IA and as an
alternative route to the mine. The drinking water supply
scheme inaugurated for Mine-IA would provide water supply
to various Yards, Canteen and Benches comprising about
3500 persons.
NLC Mines equipped with more infrastructure
Barsingsar spot:
NLC Ltd., and the Mines Safety Association, Ajmer Region
jointly celebrated the Silver Jubilee Mines Safety Week 2011
during December 2011. During that period, 281 mines in the
region were inspected by a team of experts, who ranked the mines
according to the Safety practices. NLC's Barsingsar lignite mine
has achieved success by improving the safety standard in the
mine and stood first in the tally of prizes, by winning in all the nine
categories, including the overall performance trophy. At the final
day hosted by Barsingsar Project, Shri B. Surender Mohan,
Director(Mines) presided over the function. Shri P.K. Sarkar, Dy.
Director General Mines Safety(North Zone) was the chief guest.
During the final day function, Souvenir, Calendar, a book titled
'Know Your Safety and a handbook on Safe Operating Procedures
& Code of Practice' were released by the dignitaries.
Thoothukudi spot:
The construction of another outstation project, NTPL
Power Station (2x 500 MW), Thoothukudi, is now going in full
swing. This project is a joint venture with Tamil Nadu Generation &
Distribution Corporation Ltd. (TANGEDCO) and executed through th thNLC Tamil Nadu Power Ltd.(NTPL). On 24 & 25 August, 2011.
Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD, NLC and Shri J. Mahilselvan,
Director(Power) visited the Project siteand after reviewing the
progress they geared up the activities. On 24.08.2011, CMD
inaugurated the Administrative Office building for NTPL
constructed at Harbour Estate, Thoothukudi. This building with a
carpet area by 32,300 sq.ft is constructed at a cost of r 5.08 Crore.
On the same day CMD inaugurated the Guest House constructed
in NTPL Township with a carpet area of 9,900 sq.ft at a cost of
Rs.1.03 Crore.

* MEDICAL CAMPS: NLC General Hospital in association with Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation & Resettlement (LA,
R&R) Departments of NLC and voluntary organizations like Neyveli Blood Donors Association conducted medical
camps in the peripheral villages.
During the year 2011, NLC GH organized 14 medical camps in general medicine and other specializations like ENT,
Dental, Skin, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Diabetes, Pediatrics and hypertension at the villages near Neyveli and
Rehabilitation Centres. 4290 people including school students and children benefited in the camps. Apart from the
treatment the public were educated in the respective fields by multimedia presentations and demonstrations.
* Contribution to Education: Till date NLC has constructed school buildings in 18 villages around Neyveli. It has
also provided around 4400 desks and benches to 67 schools and college at Virudhachalam.
* Books Distribution: On 27.08.2011, Shri B. Surender Mohan, Director(Mines) , NLC distributed books for a value
of r2.25 lakh to various schools around Neyveli.
* Flood Relief: On 26.11.2011 Shri A.R. Ansari, CMD, NLC visited the flood affected villages around Neyveli and
made arrangements for food, drinking water and medical aid to the flood affected persons.
* CSR Activities by various Associations in Neyveli:
In addition to this, the Associations like Neyveli Ladies Club, Bharathiya Kala Samithi, Forum of Women in Public
Sector (WIPS), NLC Chapter rendered social services by providing aides to the poor and down-trodden people.

NLC Employee Development centre is regularly conducting various training programmes
under different heads namely Computer, Functional, General, Hindi, Management, Quality Standards,
Safety, Technical, Training at Site, Worker Education Programme, etc. with the aim of enhancing the
knowledge of the employees. EDC follows various methods of training like deputation Training
Programmes, Training at the Door Steps, Orientation Programmes, Seminars and Organising Workshops.
Under the dedicated training programmes of EDC 5258 executives and 6252 non-executives were trained
during 2011.
Entrepreneurship Development Training to PAPs :
NLC is providing Entrepreneurship Development Training to Project Affected Persons (PAPs) apart
from high cash compensation. Soap making, tailoring, cattle rearing, manufacturing dairy products, making
juice from cashew fruits, repairing of electronic goods, welding, repairing and operating earth moving
equipments and heavy vehicles, etc are some of the self-employment trainings imparted to the PAPs. Upto
December 2011, 950 PAPs and their wards have been benefited through 43 groups. Thus, PAPs improved
their self esteem by learning a permanent way for earning.

·· Inter Unit Sports Meet:
NLC Sports Control Board (SCB) organized Inter Unit Sports &
Games Meet among NLC employees to promote sports activity. The
meet Commenced during the month of November 2010 and
concluded during January 2011. About 600 employees including
women actively participated in the event. Apart from various athletic
events, team events viz. ball badminton, basketball, bridge, carrom,
chess, cricket, golf, kabadi, hockey, table tennis, tennis, throw ball,
tug of war, shuttle badminton and volleyball were conducted. The
valedictory and prize distribution function was held at Bharathi
Stadium on 22.02.2011 and Shri A.R. Ansari, our CMD participated as
the Chief Guest. NLC Directors joined with NLC CMD in distributing
the shields and prizes to the winner.
· Foot Ball Tournament:
Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, Sports Authority of India
and NLC jointly organized the Inter Sports School/Hostel State Level
Football Tournament from 14.07.2011 to 16.07.2011 at Bharathi
Stadium, Neyveli and NLC team won the match.
· State level Shuttle Badminton tournament:
The Tamil Nadu Senior State Badminton Ranking Tournament was
conducted from 04.11.2011 to 06.11.2011 at Neyveli Lignite City Club
which was organized by the NLC Sports Control Board, Tamil Nadu
Badminton Association and Cuddalore District Badminton
Association in association with Lignite City Club. NLC Director (HR)
Shri S.K. Acharya inaugurated the meet and NLC CMD Shri A.R.
Ansari distributed the prizes on 06.11.2011. NLC Director (P&P) Shri
R. Kandasamy participated in the function.
